Job 42

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 This was the answer Job gave to Yahweh:	1 Respondens autem Iob Domino dixit:
2 I know that you are al -powerful: what you conceive, you can perform.	2 “ Scio quia omnia potes, et nulla te latet cogitatio.
3 I was the man who misrepresented your intentions with my ignorant words. You have told me aboutgreat works that I cannot understand, about marvels which are beyond me, of which I know nothing.	3 Quis est iste, qui celat consilium absque scientia? Ideo insipienter locutus sum et mirabilia, quae excederent scientiam meam.
4 (Listen, please, and let me speak: I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me.)	4 Audi, et ego loquar; interrogabo te, et responde mihi.
5 Before, I knew you only by hearsay but now, having seen you with my own eyes,	5 Auditu auris audivi te; nunc autem oculus meus videt te.
6 I retract what I have said, and repent in dust and ashes.	6 Idcirco ipse me reprehendo et ago paenitentiam in favilla et cinere ”.
7 When Yahweh had finished saying this to Job, he said to Eliphaz of Teman, 'I burn with anger against you and your two friends, for not having spoken correctly about me as my servant Job has done.	7 Postquam autem locutus est Dominus verba haec ad Iob, dixit ad EliphazThemanitem: “ Iratus est furor meus in te et in duos amicos tuos, quoniam nonestis locuti coram me rectum sicut servus meus Iob.
8 So now find seven bul ocks and seven rams, and take them back with you to my servant Job andmake a burnt offering for yourselves, while Job, my servant, offers prayers for you. I shal show him favour andshall not inflict my displeasure on you for not having spoken about me correctly, as my servant Job has done.'	8 Sumite ergo vobis septemtauros et septem arietes et ite ad servum meum Iob et offerte holocaustum provobis; Iob autem servus meus orabit pro vobis. Faciem eius suscipiam, ut nonvobis imputetur stultitia; neque enim locuti estis ad me recta sicut servus meusIob ”.
9 Eliphaz of Teman, Bildad of Shuah and Zophar of Naamath went away to do as Yahweh had ordered,and Yahweh listened to Job with favour.	9 Abierunt ergo Eliphaz Themanites et Baldad Suhites et SopharNaamathites et fecerunt, sicut locutus fuerat Dominus ad eos, et suscepitDominus faciem Iob.
10 And Yahweh restored Job's condition, while Job was interceding for his friends. More than that,Yahweh gave him double what he had before.	10 Dominus vertit sortem Iob, cum oraret ille pro amicis suis; et addiditDominus omnia, quaecumque fuerant Iob, duplicia.
11 And al his brothers and all his sisters and al his friends of former times came to see him. Over dinnerin his house, they showed their sympathy and comforted him for al the evils Yahweh had inflicted on him. Eachof them gave him a silver coin, and each a gold ring.	11 Venerunt autem ad eum omnesfratres sui et universae sorores suae et cuncti, qui noverant eum prius; etcomederunt cum eo panem in domo eius et moverunt super eum caput et consolatisunt eum super omni malo, quod intulerat Dominus super eum; et dederunt eiunusquisque argenteum unum et inaurem auream unam.
12 Yahweh blessed Job's latter condition even more than his former one. He came to own fourteenthousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand she-donkeys.	12 Dominus autem benedixit novissimis Iob magis quam principio eius; et factasunt ei quattuordecim milia ovium et sex milia camelorum et mille iuga boum etmille asinae.
13 He had seven sons and three daughters;	13 Et fuerunt ei septem filii et tres filiae;
14 his first daughter he cal ed 'Turtledove', the second 'Cassia' and the third 'Mascara'.	14 et vocavit nomenunius Columbam et nomen secundae Cassiam et nomen tertiae Cornustibii.
15 Throughout the land there were no women as beautiful as the daughters of Job. And their father gavethem inheritance rights like their brothers.	15 Nonsunt autem inventae mulieres speciosae sicut filiae Iob in universa terra;deditque eis pater suus hereditatem inter fratres earum.
16 After this, Job lived for another one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and his children'schildren to the fourth generation.	16 Vixit autem Iob posthaec centum quadraginta annis et vidit filios suos et filios filiorum suorumusque ad quartam generationem; et mortuus est senex et plenus dierum.
17 Then, old and ful of days, Job died.
