2 Maccabees 7

1 It also happened that seven brothers were arrested with their mother. The king tried to force them totaste some pork, which the Law forbids, by torturing them with whips and scourges.	1 Accadde ancora che furono presi sette fratelli colla loro madre, che il re voleva costringere con frustate e nerbate a mangiare, contro la legge, le carni di porco.
2 One of them, acting as spokesman for the others, said, 'What are you trying to find out from us? Weare prepared to die rather than break the laws of our ancestors.'	2 Ma uno di essi, che era il primogenito, disse: « Che cerchi e che vuoi sapere da noi? Noi siam pronti a morire, piuttosto che trasgredire le patrie leggi dateci da Dio ».
3 The king, in a fury, ordered pans and cauldrons to be heated over a fire.	3 Allora il re, sdegnato, fece mettere sul fuoco delle padelle e delle caldaie di bronzo, e quando furono arroventate,
4 As soon as these were red-hot, he commanded that their spokesman should have his tongue cut out,his head scalped and his extremities cut off, while the other brothers and his mother looked on.	4 comandò che al primo che aveva parlato, fosse tagliata la lingua, strappata la pelle del capo, fossero troncate l'estremità delle mani e dei piedi a vista degli altri fratelli e della madre.
5 When he had been rendered completely helpless, the king gave orders for him to be brought, stilbreathing, to the fire and fried alive in a pan. As the smoke from the pan drifted about, his mother and the restencouraged one another to die nobly, with such words as these,	5 E quando l'ebbe ridotto all'assoluta impotenza, ordinò che fosse messo sul fuoco, e, già agonizzante, fosse arrostito nella padella. Mentre vi era lungamente tormentato, gli altri colla madre s'esortavano vicendevolmente a morire da forti,
6 'The Lord God is watching and certainly feels sorry for us, as Moses declared in his song, which clearlystates that "he wil take pity on his servants." '	6 e dicevano: « Il Signore Dio volgerà gli occhi alla verità e si consolerà in noi, come disse Mosè nel cantico della protesta: Egli si consolerà nei suoi servi ».
7 When the first had left the world in this way, they brought the second forward to be tortured. Afterstripping the skin from his head, hair and al , they asked him, 'Wil you eat some pork, before your body istortured limb by limb?'	7 Morto in tal maniera il primo, conducevano agli strazi il secon­do. Strappatagli la pelle del capo coi capelli, gli chiedevano se volesse mangiare prima d'esser tormentato in tutti i membri del corpo.
8 Replying in his ancestral tongue, he said, 'No!' So he too was put to the torture in his turn.	8 Ma egli in lingua patria rispose e disse: « No ». Per questo anche lui subì i medesimi tormenti del primo.
9 With his last breath he exclaimed, 'Cruel brute, you may discharge us from this present life, but theKing of the world wil raise us up, since we die for his laws, to live again for ever.'	9 Vicino a render l'ultimo respiro, disse: « Tu, o scelleratissimo, ci togli la vita presente, ma il re dell'universo risusciterà nella vita eterna noi che moriamo per le sue leggi ».
10 After him, they tortured the third, who on being asked for his tongue promptly thrust it out and boldlyheld out his hands,	10 Dopo di questo venne straziato il terzo, il quale alla prima richiesta mise fuori la lingua e stese intrepido le mani;
11 courageously saying, 'Heaven gave me these limbs; for the sake of his laws I have no concern forthem; from him I hope to receive them again.'	11 e disse coraggiosamente: « Dal cielo ho avute in dono queste cose, e per amore delle leggi di Dio le disprezzo, perchè spero di riaverle da lui ».
12 The king and his attendants were astounded at the young man's courage and his utter indifference tosuffering.	12 Il re e quelli che l'assistevano ammirarono l'anima di quel giovinetto che nessun caso faceva dei tormenti.
13 When this one was dead they subjected the fourth to the same torments and tortures.	13 Morto lui si misero a tormentar nel medesimo modo il quarto,
14 When he neared his end he cried, 'Ours is the better choice, to meet death at men's hands, yet relyingon God's promise that we shal be raised up by him; whereas for you there can be no resurrection to new life.'	14 il quale, già vicino a morire, disse: « E' molto bene aver la morte dagli uomini, e da Dio avere la speranza d'esser di nuovo da lui risuscitati; ma la tua risurrezione non sarà per la vita ».
15 Next they brought forward the fifth and began torturing him.	15 Preso poi il quinto lo martoriavano, ed egli, fissando il re, disse:
16 But he looked at the king and said, 'You have power over human beings, mortal as you are, and canact as you please. But do not think that our race has been deserted by God.	16 « Tu, pur essendo mortale, col potere che hai tra gli uomini fai quel che ti pare: ma non credere che la nostra stirpe sia abbandonata da Dio.
17 Only wait, and you wil see in your turn how his mighty power wil torment you and your descendants.'	17 Aspetta quanto è necessario e vedrai la gran potenza di lui e come egli tormenterà te e la tua stirpe ».
18 After him, they led out the sixth, and his dying words were these, 'Do not delude yourself: we aresuffering like this through our own fault, having sinned against our own God; hence, appal ing things havebefal en us-	18 Dopo questo fu condotto il sesto, che, vicino a morire, disse: « Non ti fare delle vane illusioni: noi per nostra colpa patiamo queste cose; perchè abbiamo peccato contro il nostro Dio ci sono avvenute queste terribili cose;
19 but do not think you yourself wil go unpunished for attempting to make war on God.'	19 ma tu non credere di restare impunito, dopo avere avuto l'ardire di combattere contro Dio ».
20 But the mother was especial y admirable and worthy of honourable remembrance, for she watchedthe death of seven sons in the course of a single day, and bravely endured it because of her hopes in the Lord.	20 La madre, ammirabile oltre ogni dire, e degna della ricordanza dei buoni, vedendo morire in un sol giorno i suoi sette figlioli, lo sopportava generosamente per la speranza che aveva in Dio.
21 Indeed she encouraged each of them in their ancestral tongue; fil ed with noble conviction, shereinforced her womanly argument with manly courage, saying to them,	21 Piena di sapienza, li esortava a uno a uno nella patria lingua, e, unendo alla tenerezza di donna un coraggio virile,
22 'I do not know how you appeared in my womb; it was not I who endowed you with breath and life, Ihad not the shaping of your every part.	22 diceva loro: « Io non so come appariste nel mio seno: non sono stata io che vi ho dato lo spirito, l'anima, la vita, non io ho formate le membra di ciascuno di voi;
23 And hence, the Creator of the world, who made everyone and ordained the origin of al things, wil inhis mercy give you back breath and life, since for the sake of his laws you have no concern for yourselves.'	23 ma il Creatore del mondo, che stabilì la generazione dell'uomo e diede principio a tutte le cose: egli per sua misericordia renderà a ciascuno di voi e spirito e vita, perchè voi ora, per amor delle sue leggi, non vi curate di voi stessi ».
24 Antiochus thought he was being ridiculed, suspecting insult in the tone of her voice; and as theyoungest was still alive he appealed to him not with mere words but with promises on oath to make him both richand happy if he would abandon the traditions of his ancestors; he would make him his Friend and entrust himwith public office.	24 Antioco credendosi vilipeso, non curando la voce di chi lo rimproverava, rimanendo ancora il più giovane, non solo lo esortava colle parole, ma anche con giuramento gli prometteva di farlo ricco e felice, se abbandonava le patrie leggi, di tenerlo fra i suoi amici e di dargli tutto il necessario.
25 The young man took no notice at al , and so the king then appealed to the mother, urging her toadvise the youth to save his life.	25 Ma siccome il giovinetto non si piegava, il re, chiamata la madre, la consigliava a salvare il figliolo.
26 After a great deal of urging on his part she agreed to try persuasion on her son.	26 Dopo essere stata da lui esortata con lungo ragionamento, essa promise di persuadere il suo figliolo.
27 Bending over him, she fooled the cruel tyrant with these words, uttered in their ancestral tongue, 'Myson, have pity on me; I carried you nine months in my womb and suckled you three years, fed you and rearedyou to the age you are now, and provided for you.	27 E inchinatasi, per questo, verso di lui, irridendo il crudele tiranno, disse nella lingua della patria: « Figlio mio, abbi pietà di me che per nove mesi ti portai nel seno, per tre anni ti allattai, e poi t'ho nutrito fino a condurti a quest'età.
28 I implore you, my child, look at the earth and sky and everything in them, and consider how God madethem out of what did not exist, and that human beings come into being in the same way.	28 Or ti scongiuro, o figlio mio, a guardare il cielo, la terra, e tutte le cose da essi contenute, e a ricordare che Dio creò dal niente quelle cose e l'umana progenie.
29 Do not fear this executioner, but prove yourself worthy of your brothers and accept death, so that Imay receive you back with them in the day of mercy.'	29 Così avverrà che tu non temerai questo carnefice, e sarai fatto degno d'aver comune la sorte coi tuoi fratelli. Accetta la morte, affinchè nel tempo della misericordia io ti riabbia insieme ai tuoi fratelli ».
30 She had hardly finished, when the young man said, 'What are you all waiting for? I wil not complywith the king's ordinance; I obey the ordinance of the Law given to our ancestors through Moses.	30 Mentre essa ancora parlava, il giovanetto disse: « Che aspettate? Io non obbedisco al comando del re, ma al precetto della legge data da Mosè.
31 As for you, who have contrived every kind of evil against the Hebrews, you wil certainly not escapethe hands of God.	31 Ma tu, autore di tutti i mali piombati sugli Ebrei, non fuggirai la mano di Dio.
32 We are suffering for our own sins;	32 E' a causa dei nostri peccati che noi soffriamo queste cose,
33 and if, to punish and discipline us, our living Lord is briefly angry with us, he wil be reconciled with usin due course.	33 e se il Signore, adirato per breve tempo con noi, ci ha castigati per correggerci, si riconcilierà di nuovo coi suoi servi.
34 But you, unholy wretch and wickedest of vil ains, what cause have you for pride, nourishing vainhopes and raising your hand against his servants? -	34 Ma tu, o scellerato, e di tutti gli uomini il più reo, non t'insuperbire follemente, abbandonandoti a vane speranze per infuriare contro i servi di Dio;
35 for you have not yet escaped the judgement of God the almighty, the al -seeing.	35 perchè non sei ancora sfuggito al giudizio di Dio Onnipotente che vede tutto.
36 Our brothers, having endured brief pain, for the sake of ever-flowing life have died for the covenant ofGod, while you, by God's judgement, wil have to pay the just penalty for your arrogance.	36 I miei fratelli, dopo avere sofferto un breve dolore, son già nell'alleanza della vita eterna; ma tu, per giusto giudizio di Dio, soffrirai i castighi dovuti alla tua superbia.
37 I too, like my brothers, surrender my body and life for the laws of my ancestors, begging God quicklyto take pity on our nation, and by trials and afflictions to bring you to confess that he alone is God,	37 Or io sacrifico come i miei fratelli la mia vita e il mio corpo per le patrie leggi, pregando Dio che quanto prima si plachi col nostro popolo, e che tu fra i tormenti e le piaghe abbia a confessare che egli è il solo Dio.
38 so that with my brothers and myself there may be an end to the wrath of the Almighty, rightly let looseon our whole nation.'	38 L'ira dell'onnipotente che giustamente percuote la nostra stirpe finirà in me e nei miei fratelli ».
39 The king fel into a rage and treated this one more cruel y than the others, for he was himself smartingfrom the young man's scorn.	39 Allora il re, montato su tutte le furie, incrudelì più barbaramente sopra questo che sopra gli altri, non potendo soffrire d'essere schernito.
40 And so the last brother met his end undefiled and with perfect trust in the Lord.	40 Ed anche questo morì senza contaminarsi, interamente abbandonato in Dio.
41 The mother was the last to die, after her sons.	41 Alla fine dopo i figlioli fu messa a morte anche la madre.
42 But let this be sufficient account of the ritual meals and monstrous tortures.	42 Ma dei sacrifizi e delle eccessive crudeltà se n'è parlato abbastanza.
