2 Maccabees 7

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 It also happened that seven brothers were arrested with their mother. The king tried to force them totaste some pork, which the Law forbids, by torturing them with whips and scourges.	1 Sucedió también que siete hermanos apresados junto con su madre, eran forzados por el rey, flagelados con azotes y nervios de buey, a probar carne de puerco (prohibida por la Ley).
2 One of them, acting as spokesman for the others, said, 'What are you trying to find out from us? Weare prepared to die rather than break the laws of our ancestors.'	2 Uno de ellos, hablando en nombre de los demás, decía así: «¿Qué quieres preguntar y saber de nosotros? Estamos dispuestos a morir antes que violar las leyes de nuestros padres».
3 The king, in a fury, ordered pans and cauldrons to be heated over a fire.	3 El rey, fuera de sí, ordenó poner al fuego sartenes y calderas.
4 As soon as these were red-hot, he commanded that their spokesman should have his tongue cut out,his head scalped and his extremities cut off, while the other brothers and his mother looked on.	4 En cuanto estuvieron al rojo, mandó cortar la lengua al que había hablado en nombre de los demás, arrancarle el cuero cabelludo y cortarle las extremidades de los miembros, en presencia de sus demás hermanos y de su madre.
5 When he had been rendered completely helpless, the king gave orders for him to be brought, stilbreathing, to the fire and fried alive in a pan. As the smoke from the pan drifted about, his mother and the restencouraged one another to die nobly, with such words as these,	5 Cuando quedó totalmente inutilizado, pero respirando todavía, mandó que le acercaran al fuego y le tostaran en la sartén. Mientras el humo de la sartén se difundía lejos, los demás hermanos junto con su madre se animaban mutuamente a morir con generosidad, y decían:
6 'The Lord God is watching and certainly feels sorry for us, as Moses declared in his song, which clearlystates that "he wil take pity on his servants." '	6 «El Señor Dios vela y con toda seguridad se apiadará de nosotros, como declaró Moisés en el cántico que atestigua claramente: “Se apiadará de sus siervos”».
7 When the first had left the world in this way, they brought the second forward to be tortured. Afterstripping the skin from his head, hair and al , they asked him, 'Wil you eat some pork, before your body istortured limb by limb?'	7 Cuando el primero hizo así su tránsito, llevaron al segundo al suplicio y después de arrancarle la piel de la cabeza con los cabellos, le preguntaban: «¿Vas a comer antes de que tu cuerpo sea torturado miembro a miembro?»
8 Replying in his ancestral tongue, he said, 'No!' So he too was put to the torture in his turn.	8 El respondiendo en su lenguaje patrio, dijo: «¡No!» Por ello, también éste sufrió a su vez la tortura, como el primero.
9 With his last breath he exclaimed, 'Cruel brute, you may discharge us from this present life, but theKing of the world wil raise us up, since we die for his laws, to live again for ever.'	9 Al llegar a su último suspiro dijo: «Tú, criminal, nos privas de la vida presente, pero el Rey del mundo a nosotros que morimos por sus leyes, nos resucitará a una vida eterna».
10 After him, they tortured the third, who on being asked for his tongue promptly thrust it out and boldlyheld out his hands,	10 Después de éste, fue castigado el tercero; en cuanto se lo pidieron, presentó la lengua, tendió decidido las manos
11 courageously saying, 'Heaven gave me these limbs; for the sake of his laws I have no concern forthem; from him I hope to receive them again.'	11 (y dijo con valentía: «Por don del Cielo poseo estos miembros, por sus leyes los desdeño y de El espero recibirlos de nuevo)».
12 The king and his attendants were astounded at the young man's courage and his utter indifference tosuffering.	12 Hasta el punto de que el rey y sus acompañantes estaban sorprendidos del ánimo de aquel muchacho que en nada tenía los dolores.
13 When this one was dead they subjected the fourth to the same torments and tortures.	13 Llegado éste a su tránsito, maltrataron de igual modo con suplicios al cuarto.
14 When he neared his end he cried, 'Ours is the better choice, to meet death at men's hands, yet relyingon God's promise that we shal be raised up by him; whereas for you there can be no resurrection to new life.'	14 Cerca ya del fin decía así: «Es preferible morir a manos de hombres con la esperanza que Dios otorga de ser resucitados de nuevo por él; para ti, en cambio, no habrá resurrección a la vida».
15 Next they brought forward the fifth and began torturing him.	15 Enseguida llevaron al quinto y se pusieron a atormentarle.
16 But he looked at the king and said, 'You have power over human beings, mortal as you are, and canact as you please. But do not think that our race has been deserted by God.	16 El, mirando al rey, dijo: «Tú, porque tienes poder entre los hombres aunque eres mortal, haces lo que quieres. Pero no creas que Dios ha abandonado a nuestra raza.
17 Only wait, and you wil see in your turn how his mighty power wil torment you and your descendants.'	17 Aguarda tú y contemplarás su magnifico poder, cómo te atormentará a ti y a tu linaje».
18 After him, they led out the sixth, and his dying words were these, 'Do not delude yourself: we aresuffering like this through our own fault, having sinned against our own God; hence, appal ing things havebefal en us-	18 Después de éste, trajeron al sexto, que estando a punto de morir decía: «No te hagas ilusiones, pues nosotros por nuestra propia culpa padecemos; por haber pecado contra nuestro Dios (nos suceden cosas sorprendentes).
19 but do not think you yourself wil go unpunished for attempting to make war on God.'	19 Pero no pienses quedar impune tú que te has atrevido a luchar contra Dios».
20 But the mother was especial y admirable and worthy of honourable remembrance, for she watchedthe death of seven sons in the course of a single day, and bravely endured it because of her hopes in the Lord.	20 Admirable de todo punto y digna de glorioso recuerdo fue aquella madre que, al ver morir a sus siete hijos en el espacio de un solo día, sufría con valor porque tenía la esperanza puesta en el Señor.
21 Indeed she encouraged each of them in their ancestral tongue; fil ed with noble conviction, shereinforced her womanly argument with manly courage, saying to them,	21 Animaba a cada uno de ellos en su lenguaje patrio y, llena de generosos sentimientos y estimulando con ardor varonil sus reflexiones de mujer, les decía:
22 'I do not know how you appeared in my womb; it was not I who endowed you with breath and life, Ihad not the shaping of your every part.	22 «Yo no sé cómo aparecisteis en mis entrañas, ni fui yo quien os regaló el espíritu y la vida, ni tampoco organicé yo los elementos de cada uno.
23 And hence, the Creator of the world, who made everyone and ordained the origin of al things, wil inhis mercy give you back breath and life, since for the sake of his laws you have no concern for yourselves.'	23 Pues así el Creador del mundo, el que modeló al hombre en su nacimiento y proyectó el origen de todas las cosas, os devolverá el espíritu y la vida con misericordia, porque ahora no miráis por vosotros mismos a causa de sus leyes».
24 Antiochus thought he was being ridiculed, suspecting insult in the tone of her voice; and as theyoungest was still alive he appealed to him not with mere words but with promises on oath to make him both richand happy if he would abandon the traditions of his ancestors; he would make him his Friend and entrust himwith public office.	24 Antíoco creía que se le despreciaba a él y sospechaba que eran palabras injuriosas. Mientras el menor seguía con vida, no sólo trataba de ganarle con palabras, sino hasta con juramentos le prometía hacerle rico y muy feliz, con tal de que abandonara las tradiciones de sus padres; le haría su amigo y le confiaría altos cargos.
25 The young man took no notice at al , and so the king then appealed to the mother, urging her toadvise the youth to save his life.	25 Pero como el muchacho no le hacía ningún caso, el rey llamó a la madre y la invitó a que aconsejara al adolescente para salvar su vida.
26 After a great deal of urging on his part she agreed to try persuasion on her son.	26 Tras de instarle él varias veces, ella aceptó el persuadir a su hijo.
27 Bending over him, she fooled the cruel tyrant with these words, uttered in their ancestral tongue, 'Myson, have pity on me; I carried you nine months in my womb and suckled you three years, fed you and rearedyou to the age you are now, and provided for you.	27 Se inclinó sobre él y burlándose del cruel tirano, le dijo en su lengua patria: «Hijo, ten compasión de mí que te llevé en el seno por nueve meses, te amamanté por tres años, te crié y te eduqué hasta la edad que tienes (y te alimenté).
28 I implore you, my child, look at the earth and sky and everything in them, and consider how God madethem out of what did not exist, and that human beings come into being in the same way.	28 Te ruego, hijo, que mires al cielo y a la tierra y, al ver todo lo que hay en ellos, sepas que a partir de la nada lo hizo Dios y que también el género humano ha llegado así a la existencia.
29 Do not fear this executioner, but prove yourself worthy of your brothers and accept death, so that Imay receive you back with them in the day of mercy.'	29 No temas a este verdugo, antes bien, mostrándote digno de tus hermanos, acepta la muerte, para que vuelva yo a encontrarte con tus hermanos en la misericordia».
30 She had hardly finished, when the young man said, 'What are you all waiting for? I wil not complywith the king's ordinance; I obey the ordinance of the Law given to our ancestors through Moses.	30 En cuanto ella terminó de hablar, el muchacho dijo: «¿Qué esperáis? No obedezco el mandato del rey; obedezco el mandato de la Ley dada a nuestros padres por medio de Moisés.
31 As for you, who have contrived every kind of evil against the Hebrews, you wil certainly not escapethe hands of God.	31 Y tú, que eres el causante de todas las desgracias de los hebreos, no escaparás de las manos de Dios.
32 We are suffering for our own sins;	32 (Cierto que nosotros padecemos por nuestros pecados.)
33 and if, to punish and discipline us, our living Lord is briefly angry with us, he wil be reconciled with usin due course.	33 Si es verdad que nuestro Señor que vive, está momentáneamente irritado para castigarnos y corregirnos, también se reconciliará de nuevo con sus siervos.
34 But you, unholy wretch and wickedest of vil ains, what cause have you for pride, nourishing vainhopes and raising your hand against his servants? -	34 Pero tú, ¡oh impío y el más criminal de todos los hombres!, no te engrías neciamente, entregándote a vanas esperanzas y alzando la mano contra sus siervos;
35 for you have not yet escaped the judgement of God the almighty, the al -seeing.	35 porque todavía no has escapado del juicio del Dios que todo lo puede y todo lo ve.
36 Our brothers, having endured brief pain, for the sake of ever-flowing life have died for the covenant ofGod, while you, by God's judgement, wil have to pay the just penalty for your arrogance.	36 Pues ahora nuestros hermanos, después de haber soportado una corta pena por una vida perenne, cayeron por la alianza de Dios; tú, en cambio, por el justo juicio de Dios cargarás con la pena merecida por tu soberbia.
37 I too, like my brothers, surrender my body and life for the laws of my ancestors, begging God quicklyto take pity on our nation, and by trials and afflictions to bring you to confess that he alone is God,	37 Yo, como mis hermanos, entrego mi cuerpo y mi vida por las leyes de mis padres, invocando a Dios para que pronto se muestre propicio con nuestra nación, y que tú con pruebas y azotes llegues a confesar que él es el único Dios.
38 so that with my brothers and myself there may be an end to the wrath of the Almighty, rightly let looseon our whole nation.'	38 Que en mí y en mis hermanos se detenga la cólera del Todopoderoso justamente descargada sobre toda nuestra raza».
39 The king fel into a rage and treated this one more cruel y than the others, for he was himself smartingfrom the young man's scorn.	39 El rey, fuera de sí, se ensañó con éste con mayor crueldad que con los demás, por resultarle amargo el sarcasmo.
40 And so the last brother met his end undefiled and with perfect trust in the Lord.	40 También éste tuvo un limpio tránsito, con entera confianza en el Señor.
41 The mother was the last to die, after her sons.	41 Por último, después de los hijos murió la madre.
42 But let this be sufficient account of the ritual meals and monstrous tortures.	42 Sea esto bastante para tener noticia de los banquetes sacrificiales y de las crueldades sin medida.
