2 Maccabees 7

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 It also happened that seven brothers were arrested with their mother. The king tried to force them totaste some pork, which the Law forbids, by torturing them with whips and scourges.	1 También fueron detenidos siete hermanos, junto con su madre. El rey, flagelándolos con azotes y tendones de buey, trató de obligarlos a comer carne de cerdo, prohibida por la Ley.
2 One of them, acting as spokesman for the others, said, 'What are you trying to find out from us? Weare prepared to die rather than break the laws of our ancestors.'	2 Pero uno de ellos, hablando en nombre de todos, le dijo: «¿Qué quieres preguntar y saber de nosotros? Estamos dispuestos a morir, antes que violar las leyes de nuestros padres».
3 The king, in a fury, ordered pans and cauldrons to be heated over a fire.	3 El rey, fuera de sí, mandó poner al fuego sartenes y ollas,
4 As soon as these were red-hot, he commanded that their spokesman should have his tongue cut out,his head scalped and his extremities cut off, while the other brothers and his mother looked on.	4 y cuando estuvieron al rojo vivo, ordenó que cortaran la lengua al que había hablado en nombre de los demás, y que le arrancaran el cuello cabelludo y le amputaran las extremidades en presencia de sus hermanos y de su madre.
5 When he had been rendered completely helpless, the king gave orders for him to be brought, stilbreathing, to the fire and fried alive in a pan. As the smoke from the pan drifted about, his mother and the restencouraged one another to die nobly, with such words as these,	5 Cuando quedó totalmente mutilado, aunque aún estaba convida, mandó que lo acercaran al fuego y lo arrojaran a la sartén. Mientras el humo de la sartén se extendía por todas partes, los otros hermanos y la madre se animaban mutuamente a morir con generosidad, diciendo :
6 'The Lord God is watching and certainly feels sorry for us, as Moses declared in his song, which clearlystates that "he wil take pity on his servants." '	6 «El Señor Dios nos está viendo y tiene compasión de nosotros, como lo declaró Moisés en el canto que atestigua claramente: «El Señor se apiadará de sus servidores».
7 When the first had left the world in this way, they brought the second forward to be tortured. Afterstripping the skin from his head, hair and al , they asked him, 'Wil you eat some pork, before your body istortured limb by limb?'	7 Una vez que el primero murió de esta manera, llevaron al suplicio al segundo. Después de arrancarle el cuero cabelludo, le preguntaron: «¿Vas a comer carne de cerdo, antes que sean torturados todos los miembros de tu cuerpo?».
8 Replying in his ancestral tongue, he said, 'No!' So he too was put to the torture in his turn.	8 Pero él, respondiendo en su lengua materna, exclamó: «¡No!». Por eso, también él sufrió la misma tortura que el primero.
9 With his last breath he exclaimed, 'Cruel brute, you may discharge us from this present life, but theKing of the world wil raise us up, since we die for his laws, to live again for ever.'	9 Y cuando estaba por dar el último suspiro, dijo: «Tú, malvado, nos privas de la vida presente, pero el Rey del universo nos resucitará a una vida eterna, ya que nosotros morimos por sus leyes».
10 After him, they tortured the third, who on being asked for his tongue promptly thrust it out and boldlyheld out his hands,	10 Después de este, fue castigado el tercero. Apenas se lo pidieron, presentó su lengua, extendió decididamente sus manos
11 courageously saying, 'Heaven gave me these limbs; for the sake of his laws I have no concern forthem; from him I hope to receive them again.'	11 y dijo con valentía: «Yo he recibido estos miembros como un don del Cielo, pero ahora los desprecio por amor a sus leyes y espero recibirlos nuevamente de él».
12 The king and his attendants were astounded at the young man's courage and his utter indifference tosuffering.	12 El rey y sus acompañantes estaban sorprendidos del valor de aquel joven, que no hacía ningún caso de sus sufrimientos.
13 When this one was dead they subjected the fourth to the same torments and tortures.	13 Una vez que murió este, sometieron al cuarto a la misma tortura y a los mismos suplicios.
14 When he neared his end he cried, 'Ours is the better choice, to meet death at men's hands, yet relyingon God's promise that we shal be raised up by him; whereas for you there can be no resurrection to new life.'	14 Y cuando ya estaba próximo a su fin, habló así: «Es preferible morir a manos de los hombres, con la esperanza puesta en Dios de ser resucitados por él. Tú, en cambio, no resucitarás para la vida».
15 Next they brought forward the fifth and began torturing him.	15 En seguida trajeron al quinto y comenzaron a torturarlo.
16 But he looked at the king and said, 'You have power over human beings, mortal as you are, and canact as you please. But do not think that our race has been deserted by God.	16 Pero él, con los ojos fijos en el rey, dijo: «Tú, aunque eres un simple mortal, tienes poder sobre los hombres y por eso haces lo que quieres. Pero no creas que Dios ha abandonado a nuestro pueblo.
17 Only wait, and you wil see in your turn how his mighty power wil torment you and your descendants.'	17 Espera y verás cómo su poder soberano te atormentará a ti y a tu descendencia».
18 After him, they led out the sixth, and his dying words were these, 'Do not delude yourself: we aresuffering like this through our own fault, having sinned against our own God; hence, appal ing things havebefal en us-	18 Después de este trajeron al sexto, el cual, estando a punto de morir, dijo: «No te hagas vanas ilusiones, porque nosotros padecemos esto por nuestra propia culpa; por haber pecado contra nuestro Dios, nos han sucedido cosas tan sorprendentes.
19 but do not think you yourself wil go unpunished for attempting to make war on God.'	19 Pero tú, que te has atrevido a luchar contra Dios, no pienses que vas a quedar impune».
20 But the mother was especial y admirable and worthy of honourable remembrance, for she watchedthe death of seven sons in the course of a single day, and bravely endured it because of her hopes in the Lord.	20 Incomparablemente admirable y digna del más glorioso recuerdo fue aquella madre que, viendo morir a sus siete hijos en un solo día, soportó todo valerosamente, gracias a la esperanza que tenía puesta en el Señor.
21 Indeed she encouraged each of them in their ancestral tongue; fil ed with noble conviction, shereinforced her womanly argument with manly courage, saying to them,	21 Llena de nobles sentimientos, exhortaba a cada uno de ellos, hablándoles en su lengua materna. Y animando con un ardor varonil sus reflexiones de mujer, les decía:
22 'I do not know how you appeared in my womb; it was not I who endowed you with breath and life, Ihad not the shaping of your every part.	22 «Yo no sé cómo ustedes aparecieron en mis entrañas; no fui yo la que les dio el espíritu y la vida ni la que ordenó armoniosamente los miembros de su cuerpo.
23 And hence, the Creator of the world, who made everyone and ordained the origin of al things, wil inhis mercy give you back breath and life, since for the sake of his laws you have no concern for yourselves.'	23 Pero sé que el Creador del universo, el que plasmó al hombre en su nacimiento y determinó el origen de todas las cosas, les devolverá misericordiosamente el espíritu y la vida, ya que ustedes se olvidan ahora de sí mismos por amor de sus leyes».
24 Antiochus thought he was being ridiculed, suspecting insult in the tone of her voice; and as theyoungest was still alive he appealed to him not with mere words but with promises on oath to make him both richand happy if he would abandon the traditions of his ancestors; he would make him his Friend and entrust himwith public office.	24 Antíoco pensó que se estaba burlando de él y sospechó que esas palabras eran un insulto. Como aún vivía el más joven, no sólo trataba de convencerlo con palabras, sino que le prometía con juramentos que lo haría rico y feliz, si abandonaba las tradiciones de sus antepasados. Le aseguraba asimismo que lo haría su Amigo y le confiaría altos cargos.
25 The young man took no notice at al , and so the king then appealed to the mother, urging her toadvise the youth to save his life.	25 Pero como el joven no le hacía ningún caso, el rey hizo llamar a la madre y le pidió que aconsejara a su hijo, a fin de salvarle la vida.
26 After a great deal of urging on his part she agreed to try persuasion on her son.	26 Después de mucho insistir, ella accedió a persuadir a su hijo.
27 Bending over him, she fooled the cruel tyrant with these words, uttered in their ancestral tongue, 'Myson, have pity on me; I carried you nine months in my womb and suckled you three years, fed you and rearedyou to the age you are now, and provided for you.	27 Entonces, acercándose a él y burlándose del cruel tirano, le dijo en su lengua materna: «Hijo mío, ten compasión de mí, que te llevé nueve meses en mis entrañas, te amamanté durante tres años y te crié y eduqué, dándote el alimento, hasta la edad que ahora tienes.
28 I implore you, my child, look at the earth and sky and everything in them, and consider how God madethem out of what did not exist, and that human beings come into being in the same way.	28 Yo te suplico, hijo mío, que mires al cielo y a la tierra, y al ver todo lo que hay en ellos, reconozcas que Dios lo hizo todo de la nada, y que también el género humano fue hecho de la misma manera.
29 Do not fear this executioner, but prove yourself worthy of your brothers and accept death, so that Imay receive you back with them in the day of mercy.'	29 No temas a este verdugo: muéstrate más bien digno de tus hermanos y acepta la muerte, para que yo vuelva a encontrarte con ellos en el tiempo de la misericordia».
30 She had hardly finished, when the young man said, 'What are you all waiting for? I wil not complywith the king's ordinance; I obey the ordinance of the Law given to our ancestors through Moses.	30 Apenas ella terminó de hablar, el joven dijo: «¿Qué esperan? Yo no obedezco el decreto del rey, sino las prescripciones de la Ley que fue dada a nuestros padres por medio de Moisés.
31 As for you, who have contrived every kind of evil against the Hebrews, you wil certainly not escapethe hands of God.	31 Y tú, que eres el causante de todas las desgracias de los hebreos, no escaparás de las manos de Dios.
32 We are suffering for our own sins;	32 Es verdad que nosotros padecemos a causa de nuestros propios pecados;
33 and if, to punish and discipline us, our living Lord is briefly angry with us, he wil be reconciled with usin due course.	33 pero si el Señor viviente se ha irritado por un tiempo para castigarnos y corregirnos, él volverá a reconciliarse con sus servidores.
34 But you, unholy wretch and wickedest of vil ains, what cause have you for pride, nourishing vainhopes and raising your hand against his servants? -	34 Tú, en cambio, el más impío e infame de todos los hombres, no te engrías vanamente ni alientes falsas esperanzas, levantando tu mano contra los hijos del Cielo,
35 for you have not yet escaped the judgement of God the almighty, the al -seeing.	35 porque todavía no has escapado al juicio del Dios todopoderoso que ve todas las cosas.
36 Our brothers, having endured brief pain, for the sake of ever-flowing life have died for the covenant ofGod, while you, by God's judgement, wil have to pay the just penalty for your arrogance.	36 Nuestros hermanos, después de haber soportado un breve tormento, gozan ahora de la vida inagotable, en virtud de la Alianza de Dios. Pero tú, por el justo juicio de Dios, soportarás la pena merecida por tu soberbia.
37 I too, like my brothers, surrender my body and life for the laws of my ancestors, begging God quicklyto take pity on our nation, and by trials and afflictions to bring you to confess that he alone is God,	37 Yo, como mis hermanos, entrego mi cuerpo y mi alma por las leyes de nuestros padres, invocando a Dios para que pronto se muestro propicio con nuestra nación y para que te haga confesar, a fuerza de aflicciones y golpes, que él es el único Dios.
38 so that with my brothers and myself there may be an end to the wrath of the Almighty, rightly let looseon our whole nation.'	38 ¡Ojalá que se detenga en mí y en mis hermanos la ira del Todopoderoso, justamente desencadenada sobre todo nuestro pueblo!
39 The king fel into a rage and treated this one more cruel y than the others, for he was himself smartingfrom the young man's scorn.	39 El rey, fuera de sí y exasperado por la burla, se ensañó con es más cruelmente que con los demás.
40 And so the last brother met his end undefiled and with perfect trust in the Lord.	40 Así murió el último de los jóvenes, de una manera irreprochable y con entera confianza en el Señor.
41 The mother was the last to die, after her sons.	41 Finalmente murió la madre, después de todos sus hijos.
42 But let this be sufficient account of the ritual meals and monstrous tortures.	42 Pero basta con esto para informar acerca de los banquetes rituales y de la magnitud de los suplicios.
