1 Three years after this, Judas and his men learned that Demetrius son of Seleucus had landed at theport of Tripolis with a strong army and a fleet,	1 Or, dopo tre anni, Giuda e quelli che erano con lui seppero che Demetrio, figlio di Seleuco, con grosso esercito e navi sbarcato al porto di Tripoli, era salito nelle posizioni importanti,
2 and that he had occupied the country and had killed Antiochus and his tutor Lysias.	2 e che aveva occupato le provincie contro Antioco e Lisia suo capitano.
3 A certain Alcimus, a former high priest, had wilful y incurred defilement at the time of the insurrection;realising that whichever way he turned there was no security for him, nor any further access to the holy altar,	3 Allora un certo Alcimo, che era stato sommo sacerdote, ma volontariamente s 'era contaminato nei tempi della confusione, considerando che non c'era più salvezza per lui nè accesso all'altare,
4 he went to King Demetrius in about the year one hundred and fifty-one and presented him with agolden crown and a palm, together with the traditional olive branches from the Temple; there, for that day, he letthe matter rest.	4 andò a trovare il re Demetrio, l'anno centocinquanta, e gli offrì una corona d'oro, una palma, e di più rami di ulivo che sembravano del tempio. 5 Presently he found an opportunity to further his mad plan. When Demetrius cal ed him into his counciland questioned him about the dispositions and intentions of the Jews, he replied,	5 Ma colto il tempo opportuno, per la sua follia, quando fu da Demetrio chiamato in consiglio e interrogato su quali cose e quali consigli si appoggiassero i Giudei,
6 'Those Jews called Hasidaeans, who are led by Judas Maccabaeus, are war-mongers and rebels whoare preventing the kingdom from finding stability.	6 rispose: « Dei Giudei, quelli che si chiamano Assidei, dei quali è capo Giuda Maccabeo, fomentano le guerre e le sedizioni e non permettono al regno di esser tranquillo.
7 That is why, after being deprived of my hereditary dignity -- I mean the high priesthood -- I have comehere now,	7 Così anch'io sono stato spogliato della dignità dei miei padri, voglio dire del sommo sacerdozio, e son venuto qua,
8 first out of genuine concern for the king's interests, and secondly, out of a regard for our own fellow-citizens, because the irresponsible behaviour of those I have mentioned has brought no slight misery on ourentire race.	8 prima di tutto per restare fedele a ciò che è utile del re, in secondo luogo anche per provvedere al bene dei cittadini, chè per la malvagità di costoro non piccole vessazioni soffre tutta la nostra nazione.
9 When your majesty has taken note of al these points, may it please you to make provision for thewelfare of our country and our oppressed nation, as befits the gracious benevolence you extend to al ;	9 Or ti prego, o re, che, dopo aver saputi questi particolari, secondo la tua bontà, da tutti conosciuta, provveda al paese e alla nazione,
10 for, as long as Judas remains alive, the State wil never enjoy peace.'	10 perchè fino a tanto che resta al mondo Giuda, è impossibile la pace nello stato ».
11 No sooner had he spoken thus than the rest of the King's Friends, who were hostile to Judas'activities, stoked Demetrius' anger.	11 Dopo che egli ebbe dette tali cose, anche gli altri amici comportandosi come nemici di Giuda, infiammarono Demetrio,
12 The latter at once selected Nicanor, then commander of the elephants, promoted him to thecommand of Judaea and despatched him	12 il quale mandò subito come generale in Giudea Nicànore, comandante degli elefanti,
13 with instructions to dispose of Judas, disperse his followers and instal Alcimus as high priest of thegreatest of temples.	13 e diede a lui l'ordine di prendere lo stesso Giuda, di disperdere la sua gente, e di mettere Alcimo in possesso del sommo sacerdozio del massimo tempio.
14 The foreigners in Judaea, who had fled before Judas, flocked to join Nicanor, thinking that themisfortunes and troubles of the Jews would be to their own advantage.	14 Allora i Gentili, che erano fuggiti dalla Giudea per timore di Giuda, si unirono a truppe intorno a Nicànore, tenendo per propria fortuna le miserie e le stragi dei Giudei.
15 When the Jews heard that Nicanor was coming and that the foreigners were about to attack, theysprinkled dust over themselves and made supplication to him who had established his people for ever and whonever failed to support his own heritage by direct manifestations.	15 Quando i Giudei seppero che era giunto Nicànore e che a lui s'erano uniti i Gentili, si coprirono di polvere, e si misero a pregare Colui che aveva stabilito il suo popolo ed aveva protetta con evidenti miracoli la sua eredità, a custodire (il suo popolo) in eterno.
16 On their leader's orders, they at once left the place where they were and confronted the enemy atthe vil age of Dessau.	16 Avuti gli ordini del capo, subito si mossero e si riunirono al castello di Dessau.
17 Simon, brother of Judas, engaged Nicanor but, owing to the sudden arrival of the enemy, suffered aslight reverse.	17 Simone, fratello di Giuda, attaccò battaglia con Nicànore, ma si spaventò per l'improvviso sopraggiungere dei nemici.
18 Nicanor, however, had heard how brave Judas and his men were and how resolutely they alwaysfought for their country, and he did not dare al ow bloodshed to decide the issue.	18 Ma Nicànore, avendo sentito parlare del valore dei soldati di Giuda e della grandezza d'animo colla quale combattevano per la patria, aveva del timore a decidere la causa col sangue.
19 And so he sent Posidonius, Theodotus and Mattathias to offer the Jews pledges of friendship and toaccept theirs.	19 E quindi mandò Posidonio, Teodozio e Mattia a dare e a ricevere le destre.
20 After careful consideration of his terms, the leader communicated them to his troops, and since theywere all clearly of one mind they agreed to the treaty.	20 Dopo aver per lungo tempo tenuto consiglio sul da farsi, facendone la relazione alla moltitudine lo stesso condottiero, tutti furono del parere di accettare l'amicìzia.
21 A day was fixed on which the respective leaders were to meet as individuals. A litter came out fromeither side and seats were set up.	21 Così fu stabilito il giorno in cui (i due capi) avrebbero conferito in segreto fra loro, e dei sedili d'onore furono portati e posti (per loro).
22 Judas had posted armed men in strategic positions, in case of a sudden treacherous move by theenemy. The leaders held their conference and reached agreement.	22 Però Giuda aveva ordinato che degli armati stessero in luoghi opportuni, affinchè all'improvviso non venisse qualche cosa di male da parte del nemico; ma il colloquio andò bene.
23 Nicanor took up residence in Jerusalem and did nothing out of place there; indeed, he sent away thecrowds that had flocked to join him.	23 Poi Nicanore si fermò a Gerusalemme, e nulla fece d'ingiusto, e licenziò quei branchi di gente che s'erano radunati (intorno a lui).
24 He kept Judas constantly with him, becoming deeply attached to him	24 Egli amava Giuda di cuore, ed aveva dell'inclinazione verso tal uomo;
25 and encouraged him to marry and have children. Judas married, settled down and led a normal life.	25 e lo pregò ad ammogliarsi per aver figlioli. E (Giuda) celebrò le nozze, ebbe del riposo, ed essi stavano insieme famigliarmente.
26 When Alcimus saw how friendly the two men had become, he went to Demetrius with a copy of thetreaty they had signed and told him that Nicanor was harbouring thoughts against the interests of the State, andwas planning that Judas, an enemy of the realm, should fil the next vacancy among the Friends of the King.	26 Ma Alcimo, vedendo il loro scambievole affetto e i patti loro, andò da Demetrio a dire che Nicànore favoriva gl'interessi degli altri, e che gli aveva destinato per successore Giuda, l'insidiatore del regno.
27 The king flew into a rage; roused by the slanders of this villain, he wrote to Nicanor, tel ing him of hisstrong displeasure at these agreements and ordering him immediately to send Maccabaeus to Antioch in chains.	27 Il re, esasperato e irritato per le scellerate accuse di costui, scrisse a Nicànore di non poter sopportare il patto d'amicizia, e che gli ordinava di mandare quanto prima Maccabeo incatenato ad Antiochia.
28 When the letter reached Nicanor, he was very much upset, for he disliked the prospect of breakingan agreement with a man who had done nothing wrong.	28 Intese tali cose, Nicànore ne restò costernato, e oltremodo gli pesava di dovere annullare i patti convenuti, senza aver ricevuto un torto da quell'uomo.
29 Since, however, there was no way of opposing the king, he waited for an opportunity to carry out theorder by a stratagem.	29 Ma, non potendo resistere al re, spiava l'occasione favorevole per eseguire i comandi.
30 Maccabaeus began to notice that Nicanor was treating him more sharply and that his manner ofspeaking to him was more abrupt than it had been, and he concluded that such sharpness could have no verygood motive. He therefore collected a considerable number of his fol owers and got away from Nicanor.	30 Or Maccabeo, osservando che Nicànore trattava con lui con più sostenutezza, e che nei consueti incontri si mostrava sempre più crudo, comprese che tal sostenutezza non indicava nulla di buono, e messo insieme un piccol numero dei suoi, non si fece più vedere da Nicànore.
31 The latter, realising that the man had wel and truly outmanoeuvred him, went to the greatest andholiest of Temples when the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and ordered them to surrenderJudas.	31 E (Nicànore) quando seppe che (Giuda) l'aveva con energia prevenuto, salì al massimo e santissimo tempio, e, mentre i sacerdoti offrivano le consuete vittime, ordinò loro che gli consegnassero quell'uomo.
32 When they protested on oath that they did not know where the wanted man could be,	32 E siccome essi assicuravano con giuramento di non sapere dove fosse l'uomo ricercato, egli stese la mano verso il tempio,
33 he stretched out his right hand towards the Temple and swore this oath, 'If you do not hand Judasover to me as prisoner, I shal rase this dwelling of God to the ground, I shal demolish the altar, and on this veryspot I shal erect a splendid temple to Dionysus.'	33 e giurò e disse: « Se voi non mi darete nelle mani Giuda incatenato, io raderò al suolo questo tempio di Dio, distruggerò l'altare, e consacrerò questo tempio al padre Bacco ».
34 With these words he left them. The priests stretched out their hands to heaven, cal ing on him whohas at al times done battle for our nation; this was their prayer:	34 E, detto questo, se ne andò. Allora i sacerdoti, stendendo le mani al cielo, ino vocavano Colui che era stato sempre il difensore della loro nazione, e dicevano:
35 'O Lord in need of nothing, it has pleased you that the Temple where you dwel should be here withus.	35 « Tu, o Signore dell'universo, che di nulla hai bisogno, hai voluto avere tra noi un tempio per tua dimora.
36 Now, therefore, holy Lord of al holiness, preserve for ever from all profanation this House, so newlypurified.'	36 Or tu, Santo dei santi, Signore di tutte le cose, conserva incontaminata in eterno questa casa che da poco tempo è stata purificata ».
37 Now, a man cal ed Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, was denounced to Nicanor. He was a manwho loved his countrymen and stood high in their esteem, and he was known as the father of the Jews becauseof his kindness.	37 Fu denunziato a Nicànore un certo Razias, che era degli anziani di Gerusalemme, amante della patria, molto stimato, e pel suo affetto era chiamato il padre dei Giudei.
38 In the earlier days of the insurrection he had been convicted of Judaism, and he had risked both lifeand limb for Judaism with the utmost zeal.	38 Quest'uomo nelle molte occasioni s'era mantenuto incontaminato e costante nel giudaismo, contento di dare il corpo e la vita pur di non cedere.
39 Nicanor, by way of demonstrating the enmity he had for the Jews, sent over five hundred soldiers toarrest him,	39 E Nicànore, per mostrare l'odio che aveva contro i Giudei, mandò cinquecento soldati a prenderlo,
40 reckoning that if he eliminated this man he would be dealing them a severe blow.	40 sperando che sedotto lui, avrebbe portato un grandissimo colpo ai Giudei.
41 When the troops were on the point of capturing the tower and were forcing the outer door and cal ingfor fire to set the doors alight, Razis, finding himself completely surrounded, fel on his own sword,	41 Or mentre la truppa stava per irrompere nella sua casa e sforzava la porta, e ordinava di appiccarvi il fuoco, ed egli era li per esser preso, si colpì colla spada,
42 nobly resolving to die rather than fal into the clutches of these villains and suffer outrages unworthyof his noble birth.	42 scegliendo piuttosto di morire nobilmente che cadere nelle mani dei peccatori, ed essere straziato con oltraggi indegni dei suoi natali.
43 But in the heat of conflict he missed his thrust, and while the troops swarmed in through thedoorways, he ran nimbly upstairs to the parapet and manfully threw himself down among the troops.	43 Ma siccome nella fretta non s'era dato un colpo sicuramente mortale, e le truppe irrompevano dalle porte, audacemente corse sópra le mura, e virilmente si precipitò sulla folla,
44 But, as they immediately drew back, he fell into the middle of the empty space.	44 e facendo essa largo nel luogo dove andava a cadere, battè nel mezzo della testa.
45 Stil breathing, and blazing with anger, he struggled to his feet, blood spurting in al directions, anddespite his terrible wounds ran right through the crowd; then, taking his stand on a steep rock,	45 Siccome respirava ancora, con animo di fuoco, si alzò, e, sebbene il suo sangue sgorgasse in grande abbondanza dalle gravissime ferite e fosse dissanguato, passò correndo in mezzo alla turba,
46 although he had now lost every drop of blood, he tore out his entrails and taking them in both handsflung them down on the crowd, cal ing on the Master of his life and spirit to give them back to him one day. Thushe died.	46 e messosi ritto sopra una roccia scoscesa, già esangue, prese colle proprie mani le sue viscere e le gettò sopra le turbe, pregando il Signore della vita e dello spirito a rendere a lui di nuovo queste cose. E così terminò la sua vita.
