1 Three years after this, Judas and his men learned that Demetrius son of Seleucus had landed at theport of Tripolis with a strong army and a fleet,	1 Dopo uno spazio di tre anni giunse notizia agli uomini di Giuda che Demetrio, figlio di Selèuco, sbarcato nel porto di Tripoli con un forte esercito e una flotta,
2 and that he had occupied the country and had killed Antiochus and his tutor Lysias.	2 si era impadronito della regione, dopo aver fatto sparire Antioco e il di lui tutore Lisia.
3 A certain Alcimus, a former high priest, had wilful y incurred defilement at the time of the insurrection;realising that whichever way he turned there was no security for him, nor any further access to the holy altar,	3 Or un certo A'lcimo, che in precedenza era divenuto sommo sacerdote ma volontariamente si era contaminato al tempo della rivolta, avendo compreso che per lui non vi era in alcun modo salvezza né più possibilità d'accedere al santo altare,
4 he went to King Demetrius in about the year one hundred and fifty-one and presented him with agolden crown and a palm, together with the traditional olive branches from the Temple; there, for that day, he letthe matter rest.	4 andò dal re Demetrio verso l'anno 151 e gli offrì una corona d'oro e una palma, oltre ai soliti ramoscelli d'olivo del tempio. 5 Presently he found an opportunity to further his mad plan. When Demetrius cal ed him into his counciland questioned him about the dispositions and intentions of the Jews, he replied,	5 Ma, colta l'occasione propizia alla sua follia quando da Demetrio fu convocato a consiglio e interrogato in quale disposizione e volontà stessero i Giudei, a tale riguardo rispose:
6 'Those Jews called Hasidaeans, who are led by Judas Maccabaeus, are war-mongers and rebels whoare preventing the kingdom from finding stability.	6 "Coloro dei Giudei che sono chiamati Asidei, alla cui testa è Giuda Maccabeo, fomentano la guerra e la sedizione, non permettendo al regno di ritrovare la calma.
7 That is why, after being deprived of my hereditary dignity -- I mean the high priesthood -- I have comehere now,	7 Proprio per questo, privato della dignità degli avi, e cioè del sommo sacerdozio, io ora sono venuto qui:
8 first out of genuine concern for the king's interests, and secondly, out of a regard for our own fellow-citizens, because the irresponsible behaviour of those I have mentioned has brought no slight misery on ourentire race.	8 in primo luogo pensando sinceramente agl'interessi del re e poi anche preoccupandomi dei miei concittadini, poiché per sconsideratezza delle dette persone tutta la nostra gente soffre non poco.
9 When your majesty has taken note of al these points, may it please you to make provision for thewelfare of our country and our oppressed nation, as befits the gracious benevolence you extend to al ;	9 Tu, o re, che conosci bene ognuna di queste cose, provvedi al paese e alla nostra gente minacciata, in conformità a quell'affabile umanità che hai verso tutti.
10 for, as long as Judas remains alive, the State wil never enjoy peace.'	10 Infatti, finché Giuda rimane in vita, è impossibile che la situazione ritorni pacifica".
11 No sooner had he spoken thus than the rest of the King's Friends, who were hostile to Judas'activities, stoked Demetrius' anger.	11 Appena egli ebbe detto tali cose, gli altri amici che nutrivano rancori verso Giuda si affrettarono ad infiammare Demetrio.
12 The latter at once selected Nicanor, then commander of the elephants, promoted him to thecommand of Judaea and despatched him	12 Questi, perciò, scelto subito Nicànore, che era divenuto elefantarca, lo nominò stratega della Giudea e ve lo inviò,
13 with instructions to dispose of Judas, disperse his followers and instal Alcimus as high priest of thegreatest of temples.	13 dandogli ordine di far sparire Giuda, di disperdere gli uomini che erano con lui e di costituire A'lcimo sommo sacerdote del grande tempio.
14 The foreigners in Judaea, who had fled before Judas, flocked to join Nicanor, thinking that themisfortunes and troubles of the Jews would be to their own advantage.	14 I gentili della Giudea, che erano sfuggiti a Giuda, in massa si unirono allora a Nicànore, stimando che le sventure e le disgrazie dei Giudei sarebbero tornate a loro proprio vantaggio.
15 When the Jews heard that Nicanor was coming and that the foreigners were about to attack, theysprinkled dust over themselves and made supplication to him who had established his people for ever and whonever failed to support his own heritage by direct manifestations.	15 Avuta notizia della spedizione di Nicànore e dell'aggressione dei gentili, i Giudei, cosparsisi di cenere, fecero una supplica a colui che per l'eternità aveva costituito il suo popolo e che con apparizioni aveva sempre sostenuto coloro che sono sua porzione.
16 On their leader's orders, they at once left the place where they were and confronted the enemy atthe vil age of Dessau.	16 Quindi, al comando del loro capo, subito si mossero di lì e si scontrarono col nemico presso il villaggio di Dessau.
17 Simon, brother of Judas, engaged Nicanor but, owing to the sudden arrival of the enemy, suffered aslight reverse.	17 Simone, fratello di Giuda, si era già spinto contro Nicànore; ma, a causa dell'arrivo improvviso degli avversari, lentamente aveva dovuto cedere.
18 Nicanor, however, had heard how brave Judas and his men were and how resolutely they alwaysfought for their country, and he did not dare al ow bloodshed to decide the issue.	18 Nondimeno Nicànore, venuto a conoscere il valore che possedevano gli uomini di Giuda e il coraggio con cui essi combattevano per gli interessi della patria, temeva di decidere la questione con spargimento di sangue.
19 And so he sent Posidonius, Theodotus and Mattathias to offer the Jews pledges of friendship and toaccept theirs.	19 Perciò inviò Posidonio, Teòdoto e Mattatia a dare e ricevere la destra.
20 After careful consideration of his terms, the leader communicated them to his troops, and since theywere all clearly of one mind they agreed to the treaty.	20 Fatta un'ampia discussione in proposito, il capo ne diede comunicazione alle truppe e con voto manifestato per suffragio queste assentirono agli accordi.
21 A day was fixed on which the respective leaders were to meet as individuals. A litter came out fromeither side and seats were set up.	21 Pertanto fissarono un giorno nel quale incontrarsi privatamente in uno stesso luogo. Dall'una e dall'altra parte avanzò una lettiga e si disposero i seggi.
22 Judas had posted armed men in strategic positions, in case of a sudden treacherous move by theenemy. The leaders held their conference and reached agreement.	22 Intanto Giuda aveva disposto degli uomini armati nei luoghi più adatti per paura che improvvisamente dai nemici fosse compiuta qualche cattiva azione. Conclusero così l'incontro in pieno accordo.
23 Nicanor took up residence in Jerusalem and did nothing out of place there; indeed, he sent away thecrowds that had flocked to join him.	23 Nicànore poi si trattenne a Gerusalemme e non fece nulla fuori posto. Licenziò pure le folle, che erano state raccolte come greggi.
24 He kept Judas constantly with him, becoming deeply attached to him	24 Aveva continuamente Giuda con sé ed era cordialmente affezionato a quest'uomo.
25 and encouraged him to marry and have children. Judas married, settled down and led a normal life.	25 Lo esortò a sposarsi e a procreare figli. Giuda si sposò, restò tranquillo e condusse vita comune.
26 When Alcimus saw how friendly the two men had become, he went to Demetrius with a copy of thetreaty they had signed and told him that Nicanor was harbouring thoughts against the interests of the State, andwas planning that Judas, an enemy of the realm, should fil the next vacancy among the Friends of the King.	26 A'lcimo, venuto a sapere della benevolenza dell'uno per l'altro, dopo essersi procurato una copia dei patti conclusi, si recò da Demetrio e accusò Nicànore di avere sentimenti contrari al governo. 27 The king flew into a rage; roused by the slanders of this villain, he wrote to Nicanor, tel ing him of hisstrong displeasure at these agreements and ordering him immediately to send Maccabaeus to Antioch in chains.	27 Il re, adirato ed eccitato dalle calunnie di quello scellerato, scrisse a Nicànore dichiarandogli che egli non sopportava i detti patti e ordinandogli d'inviare subito ad Antiochia il Maccabeo in catene.
28 When the letter reached Nicanor, he was very much upset, for he disliked the prospect of breakingan agreement with a man who had done nothing wrong.	28 Come gli giunsero questi ordini, Nicànore ne rimase costernato e sopportava di malavoglia di dover violare le convenzioni, non avendo quell'uomo fatto nulla di male.
29 Since, however, there was no way of opposing the king, he waited for an opportunity to carry out theorder by a stratagem.	29 Poiché, tuttavia, non era possibile agire contro il re, cercava l'opportunità di eseguire l'ordine con uno stratagemma.
30 Maccabaeus began to notice that Nicanor was treating him more sharply and that his manner ofspeaking to him was more abrupt than it had been, and he concluded that such sharpness could have no verygood motive. He therefore collected a considerable number of his fol owers and got away from Nicanor.	30 Ora il Maccabeo, avendo osservato che Nicànore si comportava con lui in modo più austero e che nei consueti incontri si mostrava piuttosto aspro, pensò che tale austerità non proveniva da qualcosa di buono. 31 The latter, realising that the man had wel and truly outmanoeuvred him, went to the greatest andholiest of Temples when the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and ordered them to surrenderJudas.	31 Quando l'altro si accorse di essere stato abilmente giocato da Giuda, raggiunse il sublime e santo tempio, mentre i sacerdoti compivano i consueti sacrifici, e comandò di consegnargli quest'uomo.
32 When they protested on oath that they did not know where the wanted man could be,	32 Gli dichiararono con giuramento che non sapevano dove poteva essere il ricercato.
33 he stretched out his right hand towards the Temple and swore this oath, 'If you do not hand Judasover to me as prisoner, I shal rase this dwelling of God to the ground, I shal demolish the altar, and on this veryspot I shal erect a splendid temple to Dionysus.'	33 Egli, allora, stesa la destra verso il tempio, fece questo giuramento: "Se non mi consegnate Giuda in catene, raderò al suolo questa dimora di Dio, abbatterò l'altare e innalzerò qui uno splendido tempio a Dioniso".
34 With these words he left them. The priests stretched out their hands to heaven, cal ing on him whohas at al times done battle for our nation; this was their prayer:	34 Ciò detto, se ne andò. Allora i sacerdoti, stese le mani al cielo, incominciarono ad invocare colui che è stato sempre difensore della nostra gente, dicendo: "
35 'O Lord in need of nothing, it has pleased you that the Temple where you dwel should be here withus.	35 Tu, o Signore, che non hai bisogno di nessuna di tutte le cose, hai voluto che vi fosse in mezzo a noi un tempio per la tua dimora.
36 Now, therefore, holy Lord of al holiness, preserve for ever from all profanation this House, so newlypurified.'	36 Ora, perciò, o Signore, santo di ogni santità, custodisci per sempre incontaminata questa casa, che da poco è stata purificata".
37 Now, a man cal ed Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, was denounced to Nicanor. He was a manwho loved his countrymen and stood high in their esteem, and he was known as the father of the Jews becauseof his kindness.	37 Or un certo Razis, degli anziani di Gerusalemme, fu indicato a Nicànore come uomo amante della città e di ottima fama, che per la sua bontà era chiamato padre dei Giudei.
38 In the earlier days of the insurrection he had been convicted of Judaism, and he had risked both lifeand limb for Judaism with the utmost zeal.	38 Egli, infatti, nei precedenti giorni della rivolta aveva subìto una condanna per giudaismo e si era dato, corpo ed anima, con tutta la costanza possibile alla causa dello stesso giudaismo.
39 Nicanor, by way of demonstrating the enmity he had for the Jews, sent over five hundred soldiers toarrest him,	39 Nicànore, volendo rendere manifesta l'ostilità che nutriva verso i Giudei, mandò più di cinquecento soldati ad arrestarlo,
40 reckoning that if he eliminated this man he would be dealing them a severe blow.	40 poiché credeva che arrestando lui avrebbe inflitto un grave danno agli altri.
41 When the troops were on the point of capturing the tower and were forcing the outer door and cal ingfor fire to set the doors alight, Razis, finding himself completely surrounded, fel on his own sword,	41 Le truppe stavano già per occupare la torre e forzavano la porta del cortile, dando ordine di portare del fuoco per appiccarlo alle porte, quando Razis, stretto da ogni parte, si gettò sulla sua spada,
42 nobly resolving to die rather than fal into the clutches of these villains and suffer outrages unworthyof his noble birth.	42 preferendo morire nobilmente piuttosto che cadere nelle mani di quegli scellerati ed essere oltraggiato in modo indegno della sua nobiltà.
43 But in the heat of conflict he missed his thrust, and while the troops swarmed in through thedoorways, he ran nimbly upstairs to the parapet and manfully threw himself down among the troops.	43 Ma poiché, nella fretta della lotta, il colpo non era andato al punto giusto e le truppe erano già penetrate dentro le porte, corse coraggiosamente sulle mura e virilmente si precipitò sulla folla.
44 But, as they immediately drew back, he fell into the middle of the empty space.	44 Questa, subito indietreggiando, fece largo e così egli venne a cadere nel mezzo dello spazio vuoto.
45 Stil breathing, and blazing with anger, he struggled to his feet, blood spurting in al directions, anddespite his terrible wounds ran right through the crowd; then, taking his stand on a steep rock,	45 Respirando ancora e infiammato d'ardore, si rialzò, mentre il sangue gli scorreva abbondantemente e le ferite lo tormentavano; di corsa passò in mezzo alla folla e salito su una roccia scoscesa,
46 although he had now lost every drop of blood, he tore out his entrails and taking them in both handsflung them down on the crowd, cal ing on the Master of his life and spirit to give them back to him one day. Thushe died.	46 già completamente esangue, si strappò gli intestini, li prese con ambedue le mani e li lanciò sulla folla, invocando il padrone della vita e dello spirito di restituirglieli di nuovo.
