1 Three years after this, Judas and his men learned that Demetrius son of Seleucus had landed at theport of Tripolis with a strong army and a fleet,	1 Ma di lì a tre anni Giuda, e i suoi intesero come Demetrio figliuolo di Seleuco con grosso esercito, e con molte navi sbarcato al porto di Tripoli era andato ad occupare dei posti importanti.
2 and that he had occupied the country and had killed Antiochus and his tutor Lysias.	2 E aveva occupate varie regioni a dispetto di Antioco, e di Lisia.
3 A certain Alcimus, a former high priest, had wilful y incurred defilement at the time of the insurrection;realising that whichever way he turned there was no security for him, nor any further access to the holy altar,	3 Ma un certo Alcimo, che era state sommo Sacerdote, ma volontariamente si era contaminato nei tempi della confusione, considerando non esservi più salute per lui, né accesso all'altare,
4 he went to King Demetrius in about the year one hundred and fifty-one and presented him with agolden crown and a palm, together with the traditional olive branches from the Temple; there, for that day, he letthe matter rest.	4 Andò a trovare il re Demetrio l'anno cento cinquanta, offerendogli una corona d'oro, e una palma, e oltre a ciò dei ramoscelli d'ulivo, i quali parerà che fossero del tempio: e per allora non disse nulla.
5 Presently he found an opportunity to further his mad plan. When Demetrius cal ed him into his counciland questioned him about the dispositions and intentions of the Jews, he replied,	5 Ma trovato un tempo opportuno alla sua stoltezza, essendo stato chiamato in consiglio da Demetrio, ed essendo interrogato qual fosse il sistema de' Giudei, e con quali consigli si reggessero,
6 'Those Jews called Hasidaeans, who are led by Judas Maccabaeus, are war-mongers and rebels whoare preventing the kingdom from finding stability.	6 Rispose: Que' Giudei, che hanno il nome di Assidei, che hanno per caporione Giuda Maccabeo, nutriscon la guerra, e muovono le sedizioni, e non permettono, che il regno abbia pace:
7 That is why, after being deprived of my hereditary dignity -- I mean the high priesthood -- I have comehere now,	7 E io pure spogliato della dignità dei miei maggiori, voglio dire del sommo Sacerdozio, son venuto qua:
8 first out of genuine concern for the king's interests, and secondly, out of a regard for our own fellow-citizens, because the irresponsible behaviour of those I have mentioned has brought no slight misery on ourentire race.	8 Primieramente per essere fedele alle convenienze del re, in secondo luogo ancora per fare il bene de' miei concittadini, imperocché non piccole vessazioni patisce tutta la nostra nazione per la malvagità di coloro.
9 When your majesty has taken note of al these points, may it please you to make provision for thewelfare of our country and our oppressed nation, as befits the gracious benevolence you extend to al ;	9 Ma tu, o re, per la tua bontà a tutti notissima, informato di ciascheduna di queste cose provvedi al paese, e alla nazione:
10 for, as long as Judas remains alive, the State wil never enjoy peace.'	10 Imperocché sino a tanto che Giuda sarà al mondo non è possibile, che vi sia pace.
11 No sooner had he spoken thus than the rest of the King's Friends, who were hostile to Judas'activities, stoked Demetrius' anger.	11 Dopo ch'egli ebbe dette tali cose, anche tutti gli amici, che nutrivano odio contro di Giuda, riscaldaron Demetrio.
12 The latter at once selected Nicanor, then commander of the elephants, promoted him to thecommand of Judaea and despatched him	12 Ed egli mandò subito per capitano nella Giudea Nicanore, il quale aveva il comando sopra gli elefanti:
13 with instructions to dispose of Judas, disperse his followers and instal Alcimus as high priest of thegreatest of temples.	13 Dando a lui commissione di prender vivo Giuda, di dispergere la gente, che era con lui, e di mettere Alcimo in possesso del sommo Sacerdozio del massimo tempio.
14 The foreigners in Judaea, who had fled before Judas, flocked to join Nicanor, thinking that themisfortunes and troubles of the Jews would be to their own advantage.	14 Allora i Gentili fuggiti dalla Giudea per timore di Giuda, si unirono a branchi con Nicanore, tenendo per propria felicità le miserie, e le rovine de' Giudei.
15 When the Jews heard that Nicanor was coming and that the foreigners were about to attack, theysprinkled dust over themselves and made supplication to him who had established his people for ever and whonever failed to support his own heritage by direct manifestations.	15 I Giudei pertanto, saputo l'arrivo di Nicanore, e l'unione de' Gentili con esso, sparso il capo di terra pregavan colui, il quale avea fondato quel suo popolo per conservarlo eternamente, e il quale avea protetta con evidenti miracoli la sua eredità.
16 On their leader's orders, they at once left the place where they were and confronted the enemy atthe vil age of Dessau.	16 E secondo l'ordine del condottiere si mossero immediatamente, e si adunarono al castello di Dessau.
17 Simon, brother of Judas, engaged Nicanor but, owing to the sudden arrival of the enemy, suffered aslight reverse.	17 Ma Simone fratello di Giuda essendo venuto alle mani con Nicanore, si atterri per essere sopì aggiunti improvvisamente altri nemici.
18 Nicanor, however, had heard how brave Judas and his men were and how resolutely they alwaysfought for their country, and he did not dare al ow bloodshed to decide the issue.	18 Contuttociò Nicanore informato del valore de' soldati di Giuda, e della grandezza d'animo, colla quale combattevano per la patria, non ardiva di decidere la contesa colla spada.
19 And so he sent Posidonius, Theodotus and Mattathias to offer the Jews pledges of friendship and toaccept theirs.	19 Per la qual cosa mandò innanzi Posidonio, e Teodozio, e Mattia a portar le parole, e riferir le risposte.
20 After careful consideration of his terms, the leader communicated them to his troops, and since theywere all clearly of one mind they agreed to the treaty.	20 E tenutosi lungo consiglio sopra tal materia, e lo stesso condottiere avendone dato conto al popolo, fu concorde parere di tutti, che si accettasse la pace.
21 A day was fixed on which the respective leaders were to meet as individuals. A litter came out fromeither side and seats were set up.	21 Per la qual cosa stabilirono il giorno, nel quale i capitani conferissero tra di loro segretamente, e furono portate, e messe le sedie per l'uno, e per l'altro.
22 Judas had posted armed men in strategic positions, in case of a sudden treacherous move by theenemy. The leaders held their conference and reached agreement.	22 Ma Giuda avea comandato, che stesse un numero di soldati in luoghi opportuni, affinchè non potessero i nemici improvvisamente far qualche male: ma il colloquio passò bene.
23 Nicanor took up residence in Jerusalem and did nothing out of place there; indeed, he sent away thecrowds that had flocked to join him.	23 Indi Nicanore si fermò a Gerusalemme, e non fece cosa contro ragione, e licenziò quei branchi di gente, che si erano raunati.
24 He kept Judas constantly with him, becoming deeply attached to him	24 Egli amava sempre Giuda di cuore, essendo inclinato verso la sua persona.
25 and encouraged him to marry and have children. Judas married, settled down and led a normal life.	25 E lo pregò che si ammogliasse per avere figliuoli; celebrò le sue nozze, si mantenne tranquillo, e viveano familiarmente.
26 When Alcimus saw how friendly the two men had become, he went to Demetrius with a copy of thetreaty they had signed and told him that Nicanor was harbouring thoughts against the interests of the State, andwas planning that Judas, an enemy of the realm, should fil the next vacancy among the Friends of the King.	26 Ma Alcimo veggendolo scambievole affetto, che era tra loro, e i patti onde erano convenuti, andò a trovar Demetrio, e gli disse, che Nicanore favoriva gli interessi degli altri, e avea dato a lui per successore Giuda, il quale aspirava a regnare.
27 The king flew into a rage; roused by the slanders of this villain, he wrote to Nicanor, tel ing him of hisstrong displeasure at these agreements and ordering him immediately to send Maccabaeus to Antioch in chains.	27 Onde esasperato il re, e per le calunnie orribili di colui altamente sdegnato scrisse a Nicanore facendogli sapere, che non volea sentir parlare del trattato di amicizia, ma ordinava subito mandasse Giuda incatenato ad Antiochia.
28 When the letter reached Nicanor, he was very much upset, for he disliked the prospect of breakingan agreement with a man who had done nothing wrong.	28 Intese tali cose Nicanore ne restò grandemente commosso, e non poteva soffrire di avere ad annullare quello, che era stato convenuto, senza aver ricevuto verun torto da quell'uomo:
29 Since, however, there was no way of opposing the king, he waited for an opportunity to carry out theorder by a stratagem.	29 Ma non potendo disubbidire al re, attendeva l'opportunità per eseguire i comandi.
30 Maccabaeus began to notice that Nicanor was treating him more sharply and that his manner ofspeaking to him was more abrupt than it had been, and he concluded that such sharpness could have no verygood motive. He therefore collected a considerable number of his fol owers and got away from Nicanor.	30 Maccabeo però osservando che Nicanore se gli mostrava più sostenuto, e nelle usate visite lo trattava con qual che durezza, comprese, che quella durezza non indicava nulla di buono, e messo insieme un piccol numero de' suoi, si tenne nascosto a Nicanore.
31 The latter, realising that the man had wel and truly outmanoeuvred him, went to the greatest andholiest of Temples when the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and ordered them to surrenderJudas.	31 Or questi quand'ebbe riconosciuto, che l'altro lo avea giudiziosamente prevenuto, si portò al massimo, e santissimo tempio in tempo che i sacerdoti offerivano le vittime consuete, e ordinò loro, che gli consegnassero quell'uomo:
32 When they protested on oath that they did not know where the wanted man could be,	32 E affermando quelli con giuramento di non sapere dove si fosse quegli ch'ei ricercava, stesa la mano verso il tempio,
33 he stretched out his right hand towards the Temple and swore this oath, 'If you do not hand Judasover to me as prisoner, I shal rase this dwelling of God to the ground, I shal demolish the altar, and on this veryspot I shal erect a splendid temple to Dionysus.'	33 Giurò, e disse: Se voi non mi darete nelle mani Giuda legato, io agguaglierò al suolo questo tempio di Dio, e distruggerò l'altare, e consagrerò qui un tempio a Bacco.
34 With these words he left them. The priests stretched out their hands to heaven, cal ing on him whohas at al times done battle for our nation; this was their prayer:	34 E detto questo se n'andò: Ma i sacerdoti stendendo al cielo le mani invocavan colui, che era stato mai sempre il difensore della loro nazione, e dicevano:
35 'O Lord in need of nothing, it has pleased you that the Temple where you dwel should be here withus.	35 Tu Signore dell'universo, che di nulla abbisogni, tu volesti avere tra noi un tempio per tua abitazione.
36 Now, therefore, holy Lord of al holiness, preserve for ever from all profanation this House, so newlypurified.'	36 Or tu, Santo de' Santi, padrone di tutte le cose, conserva in eterno in contaminata questa casa, la quale poco tempo fa è stata purificata.
37 Now, a man cal ed Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, was denounced to Nicanor. He was a manwho loved his countrymen and stood high in their esteem, and he was known as the father of the Jews becauseof his kindness.	37 Fu accusato davanti a Nicanore un certo Razia de' seniori di Gerusalemme, uomo amante della patria, e molto riputato, il quale pel suo affetto era chiamato il padre de' Giudei.
38 In the earlier days of the insurrection he had been convicted of Judaism, and he had risked both lifeand limb for Judaism with the utmost zeal.	38 Questi in molte occasioni si era mantenuto incontaminato, e costante nel Giudaismo, ed era pronto a dare il corpo, e la vita per mantener la perseveranza.
39 Nicanor, by way of demonstrating the enmity he had for the Jews, sent over five hundred soldiers toarrest him,	39 E Nicanore per dimostrare l'odio, che avea contro i Giudei, mandò cinquecento soldati a prenderlo:
40 reckoning that if he eliminated this man he would be dealing them a severe blow.	40 Perocché si credeva, che ove lo avesse sedotto, avrebbe fatto un grandissimo male a' Giudei.
41 When the troops were on the point of capturing the tower and were forcing the outer door and cal ingfor fire to set the doors alight, Razis, finding himself completely surrounded, fel on his own sword,	41 Or mentre quella turba di soldati tentavano di sforzare la casa, e di spezzare la porta, e di appiccarvi il fuoco, stando egli li per esser pigliato, si diede un colpo di spada,
42 nobly resolving to die rather than fal into the clutches of these villains and suffer outrages unworthyof his noble birth.	42 Eleggendosi di piuttosto morire gloriosamente, che essere soggetto ai peccatori, ed essere strapazzato con oltraggi indegni della sua nascita.
43 But in the heat of conflict he missed his thrust, and while the troops swarmed in through thedoorways, he ran nimbly upstairs to the parapet and manfully threw himself down among the troops.	43 Ma non essendo stato mortale il colpo, ch'ei si era dato in quella fretta, ed entrando a furia la turba nella casa, corse animosamente alla muraglia, e si precipitò addosso alla turba:
44 But, as they immediately drew back, he fell into the middle of the empty space.	44 E quegli immantinente gli fecer luogo, perché non venisse sopra di loro; ed egli diede colla testa sul pavimento:
45 Stil breathing, and blazing with anger, he struggled to his feet, blood spurting in al directions, anddespite his terrible wounds ran right through the crowd; then, taking his stand on a steep rock,	45 E respirando tuttora, pieno di spiriti ardenti si rialzò, e benché versasse in gran copia il sangue dalle sue mortali ferite, passò correndo per mezzo alla turba:
46 although he had now lost every drop of blood, he tore out his entrails and taking them in both handsflung them down on the crowd, cal ing on the Master of his life and spirit to give them back to him one day. Thushe died.	46 E standosi sopra un sasso isolato, essendo già senza sangue, prese colle sue mani le proprie viscere, le gettò sopra quella gente, invocando il Signore della vita, e dello spirito, affinchè quelle rendesse a lui un'altra volta; e in tal guisa fini di vivere.
