2 Maccabees 14

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Three years after this, Judas and his men learned that Demetrius son of Seleucus had landed at theport of Tripolis with a strong army and a fleet,	1 Al cabo de tres años, Judas y sus hombres recibieron la noticia de que Demetrio, el hijo de Seleuco, había atracado en el puerto de Trípoli con un poderoso ejército y una flota,
2 and that he had occupied the country and had killed Antiochus and his tutor Lysias.	2 adueñándose del país y haciendo ejecutar a Antíoco y a su tutor Lisias.
3 A certain Alcimus, a former high priest, had wilful y incurred defilement at the time of the insurrection;realising that whichever way he turned there was no security for him, nor any further access to the holy altar,	3 Un cierto Alcimo, que antes había sido Sumo Sacerdote, pero que se había contaminado voluntariamente en el tiempo de la ruptura con el paganismo, comprendiendo que él ya no podía rehabilitarse ni acceder al altar sagrado,
4 he went to King Demetrius in about the year one hundred and fifty-one and presented him with agolden crown and a palm, together with the traditional olive branches from the Temple; there, for that day, he letthe matter rest.	4 fue a ver al rey Demetrio hacia el año ciento cincuenta y uno, y le obsequió una corona de oro y una palma, además de los acostumbrados ramos de olivo del templo. Y aquel día, se contentó con eso.
5 Presently he found an opportunity to further his mad plan. When Demetrius cal ed him into his counciland questioned him about the dispositions and intentions of the Jews, he replied,	5 Pero él encontró una ocasión propicia para sus perversos designios, cuando Demetrio lo convocó ante el Consejo, y lo consultó acerca de las actitudes y planes de los judíos. Alcimo respondió:
6 'Those Jews called Hasidaeans, who are led by Judas Maccabaeus, are war-mongers and rebels whoare preventing the kingdom from finding stability.	6 «Los judíos llamados asideos, capitaneados por Judas Macabeo, fomentan la guerra y las sediciones, y no dejan que el reino viva en paz.
7 That is why, after being deprived of my hereditary dignity -- I mean the high priesthood -- I have comehere now,	7 Debido a eso, aunque he sido despojado de la dignidad heredada de mis antepasados –me refiero al sumo sacerdocio– he venido aquí,
8 first out of genuine concern for the king's interests, and secondly, out of a regard for our own fellow-citizens, because the irresponsible behaviour of those I have mentioned has brought no slight misery on ourentire race.	8 en primer lugar, sinceramente preocupado por los intereses del rey y, en segundo lugar, por consideración hacia mis compatriotas. A causa de la conducta irreflexiva de los hombres ya mencionados, toda nuestra nación padece no pocos infortunios.
9 When your majesty has taken note of al these points, may it please you to make provision for thewelfare of our country and our oppressed nation, as befits the gracious benevolence you extend to al ;	9 Por eso, ya que tú eres el rey, una vez que te informes detalladamente de todo esto, vela por nuestro país y nuestra nación amenazados por todas partes, de acuerdo con los sentimientos humanitarios que demuestras hacia todos.
10 for, as long as Judas remains alive, the State wil never enjoy peace.'	10 Ciertamente, mientras Judas viva, es imposible que el Estado goce de paz».
11 No sooner had he spoken thus than the rest of the King's Friends, who were hostile to Judas'activities, stoked Demetrius' anger.	11 Apenas Alcimo pronunció estas palabras, los demás Amigos del rey que eran hostiles a Judas, se apresuraron a incitar aún más a Demetrio.
12 The latter at once selected Nicanor, then commander of the elephants, promoted him to thecommand of Judaea and despatched him	12 Este designó inmediatamente a Nicanor, que dirigía la tropa de los elefantes, lo nombró gobernador de Judea, y lo envió
13 with instructions to dispose of Judas, disperse his followers and instal Alcimus as high priest of thegreatest of temples.	13 con la orden de matar a Judas y dispersar a sus partidarios, restableciendo a Alcimo como Sumo Sacerdote del Templo más excelso.
14 The foreigners in Judaea, who had fled before Judas, flocked to join Nicanor, thinking that themisfortunes and troubles of the Jews would be to their own advantage.	14 Los paganos que habían huido de Judea por temor a Judas, se unieron en masa a Nicanor, pensando que los infortunios y las derrotas de los judíos serían sus propias victorias.
15 When the Jews heard that Nicanor was coming and that the foreigners were about to attack, theysprinkled dust over themselves and made supplication to him who had established his people for ever and whonever failed to support his own heritage by direct manifestations.	15 Cuando los judíos se enteraron de la expedición de Nicanor y de la invasión de los paganos, se cubrieron de polvo y suplicaron a Aquel que había establecido a su pueblo para siempre y nunca dejaba de proteger a su propia herencia en forma bien visible.
16 On their leader's orders, they at once left the place where they were and confronted the enemy atthe vil age of Dessau.	16 Bajo la orden de su jefe, partieron inmediatamente de allí y se trabaron en lucha con ellos junto al poblado de Desau.
17 Simon, brother of Judas, engaged Nicanor but, owing to the sudden arrival of the enemy, suffered aslight reverse.	17 Simón, el hermano de Judas, había entrado en combate con Nicanor, pero sufrió un ligero revés a causa del ataque sorpresivo de los enemigos.
18 Nicanor, however, had heard how brave Judas and his men were and how resolutely they alwaysfought for their country, and he did not dare al ow bloodshed to decide the issue.	18 Nicanor, enterado de la audacia de los hombres de Judas y del valor con que defendían a su patria, temió definir la situación de una manera sangrienta.
19 And so he sent Posidonius, Theodotus and Mattathias to offer the Jews pledges of friendship and toaccept theirs.	19 Por eso envió a Posidonio, Teodoto y Matatías para concertar la paz.
20 After careful consideration of his terms, the leader communicated them to his troops, and since theywere all clearly of one mind they agreed to the treaty.	20 Después de un detenido examen de la propuesta, el jefe la comunicó a las tropas, y por decisión unánime aceptaron el tratado.
21 A day was fixed on which the respective leaders were to meet as individuals. A litter came out fromeither side and seats were set up.	21 Se fijó un día en que los jefes se reunirían a solas en un lugar determinado; se puso una tarima de cada lado y se prepararon asientos.
22 Judas had posted armed men in strategic positions, in case of a sudden treacherous move by theenemy. The leaders held their conference and reached agreement.	22 Judas distribuyó algunos hombres armados en puntos estratégicos, por si se producía inesperadamente algún ataque a traición por parte de los enemigos. Sin embargo, la entrevista se realizó normalmente.
23 Nicanor took up residence in Jerusalem and did nothing out of place there; indeed, he sent away thecrowds that had flocked to join him.	23 Nicanor vivía en Jerusalén sin molestar a nadie: incluso, licenció a las tropas que se le habían incorporado en masa.
24 He kept Judas constantly with him, becoming deeply attached to him	24 Se veía constantemente, con Judas y sentía por él un sincero aprecio;
25 and encouraged him to marry and have children. Judas married, settled down and led a normal life.	25 le aconsejó que se casara y que tuviera hijos. Judas se casó y vivió tranquilamente, disfrutando de la vida.
26 When Alcimus saw how friendly the two men had become, he went to Demetrius with a copy of thetreaty they had signed and told him that Nicanor was harbouring thoughts against the interests of the State, andwas planning that Judas, an enemy of the realm, should fil the next vacancy among the Friends of the King.	26 Cuando Alcimo vio la comprensión que reinaba entre ellos, consiguió una copia del pacto celebrado y se presentó ante Demetrio, diciéndole que Nicanor abrigaba sentimientos contrarios a los intereses del Estado, ya que había nombrado lugarteniente suyo a Judas, el rival de su reino.
27 The king flew into a rage; roused by the slanders of this villain, he wrote to Nicanor, tel ing him of hisstrong displeasure at these agreements and ordering him immediately to send Maccabaeus to Antioch in chains.	27 El rey se puso fuera de sí y, excitado por las calumnias de ese miserable, escribió a Nicanor, manifestándole su disgusto por el acuerdo y ordenándole que le mandara inmediatamente preso a Antioquía al Macabeo.
28 When the letter reached Nicanor, he was very much upset, for he disliked the prospect of breakingan agreement with a man who had done nothing wrong.	28 Cuando Nicanor recibió la noticia, quedó desconcertado, porque le indignaba romper el acuerdo sin que aquel hombre hubiera cometido ninguna injusticia.
29 Since, however, there was no way of opposing the king, he waited for an opportunity to carry out theorder by a stratagem.	29 Pero como no era posible oponerse al rey, buscaba la ocasión favorable para cumplir la orden valiéndose de alguna estratagema.
30 Maccabaeus began to notice that Nicanor was treating him more sharply and that his manner ofspeaking to him was more abrupt than it had been, and he concluded that such sharpness could have no verygood motive. He therefore collected a considerable number of his fol owers and got away from Nicanor.	30 El Macabeo, por su parte, viendo que Nicanor lo trataba más secamente y que le demostraba una gran frialdad en sus relaciones habituales, pensó que esa actitud no presagiaba nada bueno. Entonces reunió a un buen número de sus compañeros y se ocultó de Nicanor.
31 The latter, realising that the man had wel and truly outmanoeuvred him, went to the greatest andholiest of Temples when the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and ordered them to surrenderJudas.	31 Cuando este advirtió que Judas se había burlado de él tan hábilmente, se presentó en el augusto y santo Templo, mientras los sacerdotes ofrecían los sacrificios rituales y les exigió que le entregaran a aquel hombre.
32 When they protested on oath that they did not know where the wanted man could be,	32 Como ellos juraron que no sabían dónde se encontraba el hombre que buscaba,
33 he stretched out his right hand towards the Temple and swore this oath, 'If you do not hand Judasover to me as prisoner, I shal rase this dwelling of God to the ground, I shal demolish the altar, and on this veryspot I shal erect a splendid temple to Dionysus.'	33 él, extendiendo la mano derecha hacia el Santuario, pronunció este juramento: «Si no me entregan prisionero a Judas, arrasaré este recinto consagrado a Dios, derribaré el altar y levantaré aquí mismo un espléndido templo a Dionisos».
34 With these words he left them. The priests stretched out their hands to heaven, cal ing on him whohas at al times done battle for our nation; this was their prayer:	34 Dicho esto, se fue. Los sacerdotes, con las manos extendidas hacia el cielo, invocaron a Aquel que había combatido incesantemente en favor de nuestra nación, diciendo:
35 'O Lord in need of nothing, it has pleased you that the Temple where you dwel should be here withus.	35 «Tú, Señor de todas las cosas, que no necesitas de nada, has querido que el Santuario donde tú habitas estuviera en medio de nosotros.
36 Now, therefore, holy Lord of al holiness, preserve for ever from all profanation this House, so newlypurified.'	36 Por eso ahora, Señor santo, lleno de toda santidad, preserva para siempre de toda profanación esta Casa recién purificada».
37 Now, a man cal ed Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, was denounced to Nicanor. He was a manwho loved his countrymen and stood high in their esteem, and he was known as the father of the Jews becauseof his kindness.	37 Un tal Razís, uno de los ancianos de Jerusalén, buen patriota, sumamente estimado y llamado por su bondad «Padre de los judíos», fue denunciado a Nicanor.
38 In the earlier days of the insurrection he had been convicted of Judaism, and he had risked both lifeand limb for Judaism with the utmost zeal.	38 El, en los primeros tiempos de la ruptura con el paganismo, había abrazado la causa del Judaísmo, entregándose a ella en cuerpo y alma, con una gran entereza.
39 Nicanor, by way of demonstrating the enmity he had for the Jews, sent over five hundred soldiers toarrest him,	39 Nicanor, queriendo poner en evidencia la hostilidad que profesaba contra los judíos, envió más de quinientos soldados para detenerlo,
40 reckoning that if he eliminated this man he would be dealing them a severe blow.	40 porque le parecía que, tomándolo prisionero, ocasionaba un gran perjuicio a los judíos.
41 When the troops were on the point of capturing the tower and were forcing the outer door and cal ingfor fire to set the doors alight, Razis, finding himself completely surrounded, fel on his own sword,	41 Cuando las tropas estaban a punto de ocupar la torre, forzando la puerta de entrada y dando órdenes de traer fuego e incendiar las puertas. Razís, acorralado por todas partes, se arrojó sobre su espada.
42 nobly resolving to die rather than fal into the clutches of these villains and suffer outrages unworthyof his noble birth.	42 El prefirió morir noblemente, antes que caer en manos de aquellos desalmados y soportar ultrajes indignos de su nobleza.
43 But in the heat of conflict he missed his thrust, and while the troops swarmed in through thedoorways, he ran nimbly upstairs to the parapet and manfully threw himself down among the troops.	43 Pero, por lo precipitado del ataque, no acertó el golpe, y como las tropas ya se abrían paso a través de las puertas, subió valerosamente a lo alto del muro y se arrojó con intrepidez sobre la multitud.
44 But, as they immediately drew back, he fell into the middle of the empty space.	44 Esta retrocedió a una cierta distancia y él cayó en medio del espacio vacío.
45 Stil breathing, and blazing with anger, he struggled to his feet, blood spurting in al directions, anddespite his terrible wounds ran right through the crowd; then, taking his stand on a steep rock,	45 Estando aún con vida, lleno de ardor, se incorporó sangrando copiosamente, y a pesar de sus graves heridas, pasó corriendo por entre las tropas y se paró sobre una roca escarpada.
46 although he had now lost every drop of blood, he tore out his entrails and taking them in both handsflung them down on the crowd, cal ing on the Master of his life and spirit to give them back to him one day. Thushe died.	46 Cuando ya estaba completamente exangüe, se arrancó las entrañas y, tomándolas con ambas manos, las arrojó contra aquella gente. Así, invocando al Señor de la vida y del espíritu para que un día se las devolviera, murió aquel hombre.
