1 King Antiochus, meanwhile, was making his way through the Upper Provinces; he had heard that inPersia there was a city called Elymais, renowned for its riches, its silver and gold,	1 Allora lo re Antioco cercava le regioni (e le contrade) di sopra, e intese che in Persia era una nobilissima cittade, e copiosa d'oro e d'ariento, la quale avea nome Elimaide.
2 and its very wealthy temple containing golden armour, breastplates and weapons, left there byAlexander son of Philip, the king of Macedon, the first to reign over the Greeks.	2 E avea uno tempio molto ricco; e avea veli d'oro e loriche (cioè panziere) e scudi, i quali avea lasciati Alessandro del re Filippo di Macedonia, il quale prima regnò in Grecia.
3 He therefore went and attempted to take the city and pil age it, but without success, the citizens havingbeen forewarned.	3 Di che ello venne ivi, e cercava di prendere la cittade, e di rubarla; ed egli non potèo, imperciò che quegli della cittade se n'accorsono.
4 They resisted him by force of arms. He was routed, and began retreating, very gloomily, towardsBabylon.	4 E si levarono contro a lui a battaglia; ed egli se ne fuggì, e andossene con grande tristizia, e tornòe in Babilonia.
5 But, while he was stil in Persia, news reached him that the armies which had invaded Judaea hadbeen routed,	5 E fugli annunziato in Perside, come l' oste sua, ch' era nella terra Giudaica, era stata sconfitta e cacciata;
6 and that Lysias in particular had advanced in massive strength, only to be forced to turn and flee beforethe Jews; that the latter were now stronger than ever, thanks to the arms, supplies and abundant spoils acquiredfrom the armies they had cut to pieces,	6 e come Lisia v'era andato in prima con grande potenza, e come era istato cacciato da' Giudei; e come loro erano fatti potenti d'arme e di forze e di molte prede, le quali loro aveano guadagnate nell' oste che loro aveano sconfitto;
7 and that they had pul ed down the abomination which he had erected on the altar in Jerusalem, hadencircled the sanctuary with high wal s as in the past, and had fortified Beth-Zur, one of his cities.	7 e che loro aveano fatte radunare l'abominazioni, le quali loro aveano edificato sopra l'altare di Ierusalem, e aveano circondato il santuario d' alte mura, sì come era in prima, e come loro aveano preso Betsura sua propria cittade.
8 When the king heard this news he was amazed and profoundly shaken; he threw himself on his bedand fel sick with grief, since things had not turned out for him as he had planned.	8 E quando lo re ebbe intese queste novelle, molto si spaventò, e fu commosso (fortemente a grande ira e dolore); e puosesi a giacere nel letto, e cadde in grande infermità per la grande tristizia, però che non era avvenuto com' egli si pensava.
9 And there he remained for many days, subject to deep and recurrent fits of melancholy, until herealised that he was dying.	9 E quivi stette molti dì; però che grande tristizia si rinnovò in lui, (e aggravando forte di sua malattia) e pensò di morire.
10 Then, summoning al his Friends, he said to them, 'Sleep evades my eyes, and my heart is cowed byanxiety.	10 E chiamò a sè tutti i suoi amici, e disse loro: il sonno s'è partito dagli occhi miei, e sono caduto e venuto meno nel mio cuore per la sollecitudine.
11 I have been wondering how I could have come to such a pitch of distress, so great a flood as thatwhich now engulfs me -- I who was so generous and wel -loved in my heyday.	11 E dissi nel mio animo: in quanta tribulazione sono io scorso, e in quante tempestadi (di tribulazioni e) di tristizia mi ritrovo io ora, il quale era lieto (e avea diletto nello animo) ed era amato nella mia podestade!
12 But now I recall how wrongly I acted in Jerusalem when I seized al the vessels of silver and goldthere and ordered the extermination of the inhabitants of Judah for no reason at al .	12 Veramente ora mi ricordo io de' mali i quali io feci in Ierusalem, onde io trassi tutte le spoglie dell' oro e dell' ariento che v' erano, e sanza cagione io comandai che ne fussono cacciati li suoi abitanti.
13 This, I am convinced, is why these misfortunes have overtaken me, and why I am dying of melancholyin a foreign land.'	13 Certo io conosco (apertamente) che per ciò tanti mali m' hanno ritrovato; onde ecco ch' io ne muoio in terra strana con grande tristizia.
14 He summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and made him regent of the whole kingdom.	14 Allora chiamò Filippo, uno de' suoi amici, e ordinollo sopra tutto il suo regno.
15 He entrusted him with his diadem, his robe and his signet, on the understanding that he was toeducate his son Antiochus and train him for the throne.	15 E diedegli la corona dell' oro, e la sua stola e lo anello, acciò ch' egli traesse inanzi il suo figliuolo Antioco, e allevasselo, e facesselo regnare.
16 King Antiochus then died, in the year 149.	16 E così quivi morì lo re Antioco ne' CXLVIIII anni (del regno de' Greci).
17 Lysias, learning that the king was dead, established on the throne in succession to him his sonAntiochus, whom he had brought up from childhood -- and styled him Eupator.	17 E Lisia seppe che il re (Antioco) era morto, e ch' egli avea lasciato che regnasse il suo figliuolo Antioco, il quale Lisia aveva allevato di giovane; e chiamò il nome suo Eupatore.
18 The people in the Citadel at the time were blockading Israel round the sanctuary and were takingevery opportunity to harm them and to support the gentiles.	18 E (avvenne adunque che) quegli ch' erano nella ròcca aveano rinchiuso il popolo d' Israel nel cerchio de' santi, e desideravano di fare sempre male a quegli del popolo d' Israel per fortificamento delle genti.
19 Judas decided that they must be destroyed, and he mobilised the whole people to besiege them.	19 Ma Giuda pensò di consumargli; e radunò tutto il popolo per assediargli.
20 They assembled and laid siege to the Citadel in the year 150, building batteries and siege-engines.	20 E così tutti insieme gli attorniarono nelli CL anni (del regno de' Greci), e sì gli assediarono, facendo fare balestri e ingegni.
21 But some of the besieged broke through the blockade, and to these a number of renegades fromIsrael attached themselves.	21 Ma alquanti degli assediati (sì partirono e) andòronsene fuori, e alquanti perfidi della gente giudea si se ne andorono insieme con loro.
22 They made their way to the king and said, 'How much longer are you going to wait before you seejustice done and avenge our fellows?	22 a quello ch' era novello re, e sì gli dissono: perche non fai tu giudicio, e vendichi i nostri fratelli?
23 We were content to serve your father, to comply with his orders, and to obey his edicts.	23 Noi sì deliberammo di servire al tuo padre, e di seguire li suoi comandamenti, e d' ubbidire alle. sue leggi.
24 As a result our own people will have nothing to do with us; what is more, they have kil ed al those ofus they could catch, and looted our family property.	24 Onde i figliuoli del nostro popolo si straniavano da noi; e chiunque era trovato di noi, era morto, e le nostre ereditadi erano tolte.
25 Nor is it on us alone that their blows have fal en, but on al your territories.	25 E non solamente hanno distesa la loro potenza insino a noi, ma eziandio in tutti li nostri confini.
26 At this moment, they are laying siege to the Citadel of Jerusalem, to capture it, and they have fortifiedthe sanctuary and Beth-Zur.	26 Ed ecco che oggi sono posti a campo alla ròcca di Ierusalem, e credonla occupare, e sì hanno armata la (ròcca e la) fortezza di Betsura.
27 Unless you forestall them at once, they wil go on to even bigger things, and then you wil never beable to control them.'	27 E se tu subitamente non ci soccorri, loro faranno maggiori cose che queste, e non gli potrai raffrenare.
28 The king was furious when he heard this and summoned al his Friends, the generals of his forcesand the marshals of horse.	28 Molto si conturbò lo re, udito ch' ebbe queste cose; e convocòe tutti li suoi amici, e prìncipi di suo oste, e quelli ch' erano principi de' cavalieri.
29 He recruited mercenaries from other kingdoms and the Mediterranean islands.	29 Ancora degli altri reami, e delle isole (e de' confini e di quelli delle) marine sì vennono a lui grande oste di gente soldata.
30 His forces numbered a hundred thousand foot soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry and thirty-twoelephants with experience of battle conditions.	30 E fue il numero de' pedoni dell' oste C milia, e de' cavalieri XX milia; e furonvi XXXII elefanti, i quali erano ammaestrati a battaglia.
31 They advanced through Idumaea and besieged Beth-Zur, pressing the attack for days on end; theyalso constructed siege-engines, but the defenders made a sortie and set these on fire, putting up a braveresistance.	31 E vennero per lo paese di Idumea, e posaronsi a Betsura, e combatteronla per molti dì, e feciono molti ingegni; ma (quegli di dentro del popolo d'Israel) uscirono fuori, e combatterono valentemente, e misono fuoco negl' ingegni.
32 At this, Judas left the Citadel and pitched camp at Beth-Zechariah opposite the royal encampment.	32 Ma Giuda (sentendo queste cose e la grande oste del re incontanente) si partì dallo assedio della ròcca, e colla sua gente passò [a Betzacara] al campo del re.
33 The king rose at daybreak and marched his army at top speed down the road to Beth-Zechariah,where his forces took up their battle formations and sounded the trumpets.	33 E levando il re inanzi dì, (venne colla saa gente a Betzacara, e) concitòe l'oste allo assalimento contro a Betzacara; e quegli dello esercito (del re, vedendosi de' loro avversarii) s' apparecchiarono a combattere, e sonarono le trombe.
34 The elephants were given a syrup of grapes and mulberries to prepare them for the battle.	34 E mostrarono agli elefanti il sangue dell' uve e delle more, per fargli più arditi nella battaglia.
35 These animals were distributed among the phalanxes, to each elephant being al ocated a thousandmen dressed in coats of mail with bronze helmets on their heads; five hundred picked horsemen were alsoassigned to each beast.	35 E divisono le dette bestie per legioni; e a ciascuno elefante fue assegnato mille fanti armati di lorica, e aveano cappelli di rame nel loro capo; e a ciascuna bestia furono deputati cinquecento cavalieri eletti.
36 The horsemen anticipated every move their elephant made; wherever it went they went with it, neverquitting it.	36 I quali continuamente erano colli elefanti, andandogli inanzi dovunque loro andavano; e non si partivano da loro.
37 On each elephant, to protect it, was a stout wooden tower, kept in position by girths, each with itsthree combatants, as well as its mahout.	37 E sopra ciascuno elefante era una torre di legname, fermata in defensione dell' oste, e sopra ciascuna erano ingegni; ed eranvi XXXII uomini armati in ciascuna torre, i quali combattevano di sopra (contra li nimici); e dentro v'era il maestro. (degli ingegni e) dell' elefante.
38 The remainder of the cavalry was stationed on one or other of the two flanks of the army, to harassthe enemy and cover the phalanxes.	38 E tutta l'altra oste de' cavalieri ordinò il re in due parti; e ordinò che si movessono a suono di trombe, e che ordinatamente si strignessono insieme a legioni.
39 When the sun glinted on the bronze and golden shields, the mountains caught the glint and gleamedlike fiery torches.	39 E quando il sole risplendette nelli loro scudi (d'essi) coperti d' oro e di rame, negli monti risplendevano; e (nelli campi) rilucevano a modo di lampane.
40 One part of the royal army was deployed on the upper slopes of the mountain and the other in theval ey below; they advanced in solid, wel -disciplined formation.	40 E l' una parte dell' oste del re fu divisa ad andare su per gli monti alti, e gli altri andavano per i luoghi bassi; e andavano saviamente e con ordine.
41 Everyone trembled at the noise made by this vast multitude, the thunder of the troops on the marchand the clanking of their armour, for it was an immense and mighty army.	41 E loro commossono tutti gli abitatori di quelle contrade per la voce della loro moltitudine, e per lo viaggio della turba, e per lo rumore dell' arme; per ciò ch' ella era grande oste e molto forte.
42 Judas and his army advanced to give battle, and six hundred of the king's army were killed.	42 Allora Giuda e la sua gente s' aggiunsono alla battaglia; e caddono (cioè furono morti) di quegli del re secento uomini.
43 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, noticing that one of the elephants was royal y caparisoned and was also tal erthan al the others, and supposing that the king was mounted on it,	43 E (in quell' ora) Eleazaro, figliuolo di Saura, vidde uno delli elefanti, il quale avea l'insegna della panciera del re, il quale elefante era maggiore d'altezza di tutti gli altri; e parve a lui che quivi fosse lo re.
44 sacrificed himself to save his people and win an imperishable name.	44 E disposesi alla morte, per liberare il suo popolo, e per acquistarsi (onore e glorioso) nome in eterno.
45 Boldly charging towards the creature through the thick of the phalanx, dealing death to right and left,so that the enemy scattered on either side at his onslaught,	45 E corse allo elefante arditamente per mezzo la legione, uccidendo li nimici a destra e a sinistra, e gittavali per terra di qua e di là.
46 he darted in under the elephant, thrust at it from underneath, and kil ed it. The beast collapsed on topof him, and he died on the spot.	46 E andò sotto allo elefante, e sè medesimo sottopuose a lui, e sì lo uccise; e cadde la bestia in terra sopra lui, e così morì quivi (Eleazaro).
47 The Jews however realising how strong the king was and how ferocious his army, retreated ahead ofthem.	47 E allora veggendo (Giuda e la sua gente) la potenza del re e della sua grande oste, per lo meglio si spartirono da loro.
48 The royal army moved up to encounter them outside Jerusalem, and the king began to blockadeJudaea and Mount Zion.	48 Ma l'oste dello re sì andò dietro a loro in Ierusalem, ponendo lo re il campo in Giudea nel monte Sion.
49 He granted peace terms to the people of Beth-Zur, who evacuated the town; it lacked store ofprovisions to withstand a siege, since the land was enjoying a sabbatical year.	49 E fece pace con quelli di Betsura; e per la carestia della vittuaglia di quelli ch' erano nella cittade rinchiusi, se n' uscirono fuori, però che le terre in quello anno non si seminarono.
50 Having occupied Beth-Zur, the king stationed a garrison there to hold it.	50 E allora lo re prese (la città) Betsura, e puosevi sua gente a guardia.
51 He besieged the sanctuary for a long time, erecting batteries and siege-engines, flame-throwers andballistas, scorpions to discharge arrows, and catapults.	51 E puose il campo al luogo della santificazione per molti dì; e puosevi balestri e ingegni e gittamenti di fuoco e artificii da gittare pietre e lance e dardi, e per gittare saette e manganelle.
52 The defenders countered these by constructing their own engines and were thus able to prolong theirresistance.	52 E quelli dentro feciono ingegni similmente contro alli loro ingegni, e combatterono molti dì.
53 But they had no food in their stores since it was the seventh year, and because those who had takenrefuge in Judaea from the gentiles had eaten up the last of their reserves.	53 Ma lo fornimento della vittuaglia non era nella città, imperò che già era il settimo anno (della guerra); e gli uomini della gente pagana, ch' erano rimasi in Giudea aveano consumato l'avanzo di · quelle cose ch' erano riposte.
54 Only a few men were left in the Holy Place, owing to the severity of the famine; the rest had dispersed and gone home.	54 E rimasono nelli santi luoghi pochi uomini, però che la fame gli avea molto occupati; e dispersonsi tutti, chi in uno luogo e chi in uno altro.
55 Meanwhile Philip, whom King Antiochus before his death had appointed to train his son Antiochus forthe throne,	55 E udì Lisia, che Filippo, il quale il re Antioco, mentre ch' era vivo, ordinò che nutrisse Antioco suo figliuolo, acciò che regnasse,
56 had returned from Persia and Media with the forces that had accompanied the king, and was planningto seize control of affairs.	56 era ritornato di Persia e di Media, e anco lo esercito il quale era con lui andato, e ch' egli cercava di prendere il governo del reame.
57 On hearing this, Lysias at once decided to leave, and said to the king, the generals of the army andthe men, 'We are growing weaker every day, we are short of food, and the place we are besieging is welfortified; moreover the affairs of the kingdom demand our attention.	57 Ora Lisia si studiò di andare (verso il re), e dire al re e agli (suoi) principi dello esercito: noi sì vegnamo meno continuamente, e abbiamo mancamento di vittuaglia, e lo luogo che noi assediamo armato e fornito, e a noi bisogna di ordinare i fatti del reame.
58 Let us offer the hand of friendship to these men and make peace with them and with their wholenation.	58 E accordiamci con questi uomini, e facciamo pace con loro e con tutta la loro gente.
59 Let us grant them permission to fol ow their own customs as before, since it is our abolition of thesecustoms that has provoked them into acting like this.'	59 E concediamo loro, ch' egli vivano secondo la legge loro, secondo che loro sì facevano in prima; imperciò che loro sono adirati incontro a noi per le loro leggi, che noi aviamo dispregiate, e perciò hanno fatto tutte queste cose.
60 The king and his commanders approved this argument, and he offered the Jews peace terms, whichthey accepted.	60 E piacque allo re il detto sermone, e mandòe a fare pace con loro, e ricevetterla.
61 The king and the generals ratified the treaty by oath, and the besieged accordingly left the fortress.	61 E giurolla lo re e li suoi principi; e uscirono della fortezza.
62 The king then entered Mount Zion, but on seeing how impregnable the place was, he broke the oathhe had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be demolished.	62 E lo re entrò nel monte di Sion, e vidde la fortezza del luogo; e ruppe a loro tostamente il sacramento che avea fatto, e comandò che le mura si disfacessono d' intorno.
63 He then hurriedly withdrew, making off for Antioch, where he found Philip already master of the city.Antiochus gave battle and captured the city by force of arms.	63 E poi incontanente si partì, e ritornossi ad Antiochia, e trovò che Filippo signoreggiava nella terra; di che combattè contro a lui, e (per forza) acquistòe la cittade.
