1 King Antiochus, meanwhile, was making his way through the Upper Provinces; he had heard that inPersia there was a city called Elymais, renowned for its riches, its silver and gold,	1 Enquanto percorria as províncias superiores, soube o rei Antíoco que na Pérsia, em Elimaida, havia uma cidade famosa por suas riquezas, sua prata e ouro.
2 and its very wealthy temple containing golden armour, breastplates and weapons, left there byAlexander son of Philip, the king of Macedon, the first to reign over the Greeks.	2 Seu templo, extremamente rico, possuía véus de ouro, escudos, couraças e armas, abandonados ali por Alexandre, filho de Filipe, rei da Macedônia, que foi o primeiro a reinar sobre a Grécia.
3 He therefore went and attempted to take the city and pil age it, but without success, the citizens havingbeen forewarned.	3 Dirigiu-se ele para essa cidade, com a finalidade de tomá-la e pilhá-la, mas foi em vão, porque os habitantes haviam sido prevenidos.
4 They resisted him by force of arms. He was routed, and began retreating, very gloomily, towardsBabylon.	4 Eles se aprontaram para lhe resistir e ele teve que voltar de lá, para alcançar Babilônia com grande humilhação.
5 But, while he was stil in Persia, news reached him that the armies which had invaded Judaea hadbeen routed,	5 E eis que, na Pérsia, um mensageiro veio dizer-lhe que as tropas enviadas à Judéia tinham sido derrotadas, 6. e que Lísias, tendo partido a princípio com um poderoso exército, havia fugido na presença dos judeus, os quais haviam aumentado ainda suas forças com armas e tropas e se tinham enriquecido com todo o material raptado de seus campos devastados.
6 and that Lysias in particular had advanced in massive strength, only to be forced to turn and flee beforethe Jews; that the latter were now stronger than ever, thanks to the arms, supplies and abundant spoils acquiredfrom the armies they had cut to pieces,
7 and that they had pul ed down the abomination which he had erected on the altar in Jerusalem, hadencircled the sanctuary with high wal s as in the past, and had fortified Beth-Zur, one of his cities.	7 Eles tinham também destruído a abominação edificada por ele sobre o altar, em Jerusalém, e haviam cercado o templo com altas muralhas, como outrora, assim como a cidade de Betsur.
8 When the king heard this news he was amazed and profoundly shaken; he threw himself on his bedand fel sick with grief, since things had not turned out for him as he had planned.	8 Ouvindo essas novas, o rei ficou irado e profundamente perturbado. Atirou-se à cama e caiu doente de tristeza, porque os acontecimentos não tinham correspondido à sua expectativa.
9 And there he remained for many days, subject to deep and recurrent fits of melancholy, until herealised that he was dying.	9 Passou assim muitos dias, porque sua mágoa se renovava sem cessar, e pensava na morte.
10 Then, summoning al his Friends, he said to them, 'Sleep evades my eyes, and my heart is cowed byanxiety.	10 Mandou chamar todos os seus amigos e lhes disse: O sono fugiu dos meus olhos e meu coração desfalece de tristeza.
11 I have been wondering how I could have come to such a pitch of distress, so great a flood as thatwhich now engulfs me -- I who was so generous and wel -loved in my heyday.	11 Eu repito para mim mesmo: Em que aflição fui eu cair e a que desolação fui eu reduzido até o presente, eu que era bom e querido no tempo de meu poder?
12 But now I recall how wrongly I acted in Jerusalem when I seized al the vessels of silver and goldthere and ordered the extermination of the inhabitants of Judah for no reason at al .	12 Mas agora eu me lembro dos males que causei em Jerusalém, de todos os objetos de ouro e de prata que saqueei, e de todos os habitantes da Judéia que exterminei sem motivo.
13 This, I am convinced, is why these misfortunes have overtaken me, and why I am dying of melancholyin a foreign land.'	13 Reconheço que foi por causa disso que todos esses males me fulminaram, e agora morro de tristeza numa terra estrangeira.
14 He summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and made him regent of the whole kingdom.	14 Ele chamou Filipe, um de seus amigos, e constituiu-o regente de todo o seu reino.
15 He entrusted him with his diadem, his robe and his signet, on the understanding that he was toeducate his son Antiochus and train him for the throne.	15 Entregou-lhe seu diadema, seu manto, e seu anel, com a responsabilidade de guiar seu filho Antíoco e de educá-lo para sua realeza.
16 King Antiochus then died, in the year 149.	16 O rei Antíoco morreu ali no ano cento e quarenta e nove.
17 Lysias, learning that the king was dead, established on the throne in succession to him his sonAntiochus, whom he had brought up from childhood -- and styled him Eupator.	17 Por sua vez soube Lísias que o rei havia morrido e elevou ao trono seu filho Antíoco que ele havia educado desde a infância, e a quem ele dera o nome de Eupator.
18 The people in the Citadel at the time were blockading Israel round the sanctuary and were takingevery opportunity to harm them and to support the gentiles.	18 Nesse ínterim, os ocupantes da cidadela importunavam os judeus que se dirigiam ao templo, procuravam constantemente causar-lhes dano, para apoiar os gentios.
19 Judas decided that they must be destroyed, and he mobilised the whole people to besiege them.	19 Judas resolveu arrancar-lhes das mãos a cidadela e convocou todo o povo para sitiá-los.
20 They assembled and laid siege to the Citadel in the year 150, building batteries and siege-engines.	20 Reuniram-se, portanto, para começar o cerco no ano cento e cinqüenta, e construíram balistas e máquinas.
21 But some of the besieged broke through the blockade, and to these a number of renegades fromIsrael attached themselves.	21 Mas alguns dos sitiados, aos quais se juntaram alguns israelitas perversos, fugiram
22 They made their way to the king and said, 'How much longer are you going to wait before you seejustice done and avenge our fellows?	22 e correram ao rei para lhe dizer: Até quando deixarás de fazer justiça e vingar nossos irmãos?
23 We were content to serve your father, to comply with his orders, and to obey his edicts.	23 Julgamos bom servir a teu pai, obedecer suas ordens e seguir suas leis;
24 As a result our own people will have nothing to do with us; what is more, they have kil ed al those ofus they could catch, and looted our family property.	24 e os filhos de nosso povo se afastaram de nós como dos estrangeiros. Eles cercam a cidadela; mal capturam um dos nossos, matam-no e pilham os nossos bens.
25 Nor is it on us alone that their blows have fal en, but on al your territories.	25 E não é somente sobre nós que eles estendem a mão, mas ainda contra os povos vizinhos.
26 At this moment, they are laying siege to the Citadel of Jerusalem, to capture it, and they have fortifiedthe sanctuary and Beth-Zur.	26 Eis que hoje eles se empossaram da cidadela, para serem senhores do templo e da cidade, e fortificaram Betsur.
27 Unless you forestall them at once, they wil go on to even bigger things, and then you wil never beable to control them.'	27 Se tu não os prevenires, farão ainda piores males e tu não poderás mais detê-los.
28 The king was furious when he heard this and summoned al his Friends, the generals of his forcesand the marshals of horse.	28 A estas palavras o rei se encolerizou e convocou todos os seus amigos, os generais de seus exércitos e os chefes de sua cavalaria.
29 He recruited mercenaries from other kingdoms and the Mediterranean islands.	29 E ajuntaram-se a ele outros reinos e ilhas marítimas, tropas de mercenários;
30 His forces numbered a hundred thousand foot soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry and thirty-twoelephants with experience of battle conditions.	30 e seu exército atingiu a cem mil infantes, vinte mil cavaleiros e trinta e dois elefantes, prontos para a guerra.
31 They advanced through Idumaea and besieged Beth-Zur, pressing the attack for days on end; theyalso constructed siege-engines, but the defenders made a sortie and set these on fire, putting up a braveresistance.	31 Atravessaram eles a Iduméia e acamparam defronte a Betsur, onde combateram por muito tempo; construíram máquinas, mas os sitiados saíram e lançaram fogo, lutando com coragem.
32 At this, Judas left the Citadel and pitched camp at Beth-Zechariah opposite the royal encampment.	32 Abandonando a cidadela, veio Judas estabelecer-se em Betzacara, defronte do campo de luta do rei.
33 The king rose at daybreak and marched his army at top speed down the road to Beth-Zechariah,where his forces took up their battle formations and sounded the trumpets.	33 Ao amanhecer, levantou-se o rei e dirigiu impetuosamente suas tropas em direção a Betzacara: as forças se prepararam para o combate, e soaram as trombetas.
34 The elephants were given a syrup of grapes and mulberries to prepare them for the battle.	34 Mostraram aos elefantes suco de uvas e de amoras para incitá-los ao combate.
35 These animals were distributed among the phalanxes, to each elephant being al ocated a thousandmen dressed in coats of mail with bronze helmets on their heads; five hundred picked horsemen were alsoassigned to each beast.	35 Foram repartidos nas falanges, pondo-se em volta de cada elefante mil homens armados de cotas de malhas e de capacetes de bronze para a cabeça, e quinhentos cavaleiros escolhidos estavam igualmente ao redor de cada animal.
36 The horsemen anticipated every move their elephant made; wherever it went they went with it, neverquitting it.	36 Esses cavaleiros tinham o costume de estar com o animal onde quer que ele estivesse e de ir aonde ele ia sem jamais se afastarem dele.
37 On each elephant, to protect it, was a stout wooden tower, kept in position by girths, each with itsthree combatants, as well as its mahout.	37 Sobre cada um havia também fortes torres de madeira, muito firmes e defendidas pelas máquinas. Sobre cada um achavam-se também valentes guerreiros, que combatiam lá em cima, e, finalmente, seu condutor indiano.
38 The remainder of the cavalry was stationed on one or other of the two flanks of the army, to harassthe enemy and cover the phalanxes.	38 O restante da cavalaria, colocada de um lado e de outro, nas duas alas, manobrava cobrindo as falanges.
39 When the sun glinted on the bronze and golden shields, the mountains caught the glint and gleamedlike fiery torches.	39 Quando o sol brilhou sobre os escudos de ouro e bronze, a montanha resplandeceu, como que iluminada por outras tantas lâmpadas.
40 One part of the royal army was deployed on the upper slopes of the mountain and the other in theval ey below; they advanced in solid, wel -disciplined formation.	40 Uma parte das tropas do rei se espalhou sobre as colinas e outra na planície, caminhando com precaução e em boa ordem.
41 Everyone trembled at the noise made by this vast multitude, the thunder of the troops on the marchand the clanking of their armour, for it was an immense and mighty army.	41 O ruído de seu número, de sua marcha, da colisão de suas armas era pavoroso, porque era um exército extremamente numeroso e possante.
42 Judas and his army advanced to give battle, and six hundred of the king's army were killed.	42 Judas, no entanto, avançou com os seus para travar a batalha, e seiscentos homens do exército do rei foram aniquilados.

45 Boldly charging towards the creature through the thick of the phalanx, dealing death to right and left,so that the enemy scattered on either side at his onslaught,	45 Precipitou-se audaciosamente nessa direção, para o meio da falange, matando à direita e à esquerda e separando o inimigo de lado a lado.
46 he darted in under the elephant, thrust at it from underneath, and kil ed it. The beast collapsed on topof him, and he died on the spot.	46 Meteu-se debaixo do elefante e, tomando posição abaixo dele, matou-o. O animal rolou sobre ele, e ele morreu ali.
47 The Jews however realising how strong the king was and how ferocious his army, retreated ahead ofthem.	47 No entanto, averiguando o poder do exército real e a impetuosidade de suas tropas, retiraram-se os judeus.
48 The royal army moved up to encounter them outside Jerusalem, and the king began to blockadeJudaea and Mount Zion.	48 Mas os soldados do rei subiram-lhe ao encontro até Jerusalém, dirigindo-se então o rei à Judéia e ao monte Sião.
49 He granted peace terms to the people of Beth-Zur, who evacuated the town; it lacked store ofprovisions to withstand a siege, since the land was enjoying a sabbatical year.	49 Fez igualmente a paz com os habitantes de Betsur, porquanto estes saíram da cidade, porque já não tinham víveres para continuarem ali, pois era o ano sabático.
50 Having occupied Beth-Zur, the king stationed a garrison there to hold it.	50 Assim o rei apoderou-se da cidade e pôs nela uma guarnição.
51 He besieged the sanctuary for a long time, erecting batteries and siege-engines, flame-throwers andballistas, scorpions to discharge arrows, and catapults.	51 Por muitos dias cercou a cidade santa, construiu máquinas, guindastes para lançar fogo ou pedras, escorpiões para lançar flechas e fundas.
52 The defenders countered these by constructing their own engines and were thus able to prolong theirresistance.	52 De seu lado, os sitiados construíram também máquinas, para se oporem aos seus inimigos, e combateram por muito tempo.
53 But they had no food in their stores since it was the seventh year, and because those who had takenrefuge in Judaea from the gentiles had eaten up the last of their reserves.	53 Todavia faltavam víveres nos celeiros, por ser o sétimo ano e todos os que se achavam refugiados na Judéia, para fugir dos gentios, haviam esgotado o resto da reserva.
54 Only a few men were left in the Holy Place, owing to the severity of the famine; the rest had dispersed and gone home.	54 Restavam afinal poucos homens para a defesa do templo, atingidos como estavam pela fome e por dispersarem-se cada um para sua casa.
55 Meanwhile Philip, whom King Antiochus before his death had appointed to train his son Antiochus forthe throne,	55 Filipe, que antes de morrer o rei Antíoco fora designado para educar seu filho Antíoco para a realeza, 56. tinha chegado da Pérsia e da Média com o exército do rei e procurava apoderar-se do governo.
56 had returned from Persia and Media with the forces that had accompanied the king, and was planningto seize control of affairs.
57 On hearing this, Lysias at once decided to leave, and said to the king, the generals of the army andthe men, 'We are growing weaker every day, we are short of food, and the place we are besieging is welfortified; moreover the affairs of the kingdom demand our attention.	57 Soube-o Lísias e apressou a partida dizendo ao rei, aos oficiais e aos homens: Nós nos vamos enfraquecendo aqui dia por dia, temos poucos víveres, e o lugar que sitiamos é forte, enquanto nos devemos ocupar com os negócios do reino.
58 Let us offer the hand of friendship to these men and make peace with them and with their wholenation.	58 Estendamos a mão a esses homens e façamos paz com eles e com toda a sua raça.
59 Let us grant them permission to fol ow their own customs as before, since it is our abolition of thesecustoms that has provoked them into acting like this.'	59 Deixemo-los viver como outrora segundo as suas próprias leis, porque foi por causa dessas leis que nós abolimos, que eles se revoltaram e fizeram tudo isso.
60 The king and his commanders approved this argument, and he offered the Jews peace terms, whichthey accepted.	60 Essa proposta agradou ao rei e aos generais. Enviou, pois, alguém para tratar da paz com os sitiados, que a aceitaram.
61 The king and the generals ratified the treaty by oath, and the besieged accordingly left the fortress.	61 Sob a palavra do juramento feito pelo rei e os generais, abandonaram a fortaleza.
62 The king then entered Mount Zion, but on seeing how impregnable the place was, he broke the oathhe had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be demolished.	62 O rei subiu o monte Sião e visitou as fortificações, mas quebrou a palavra dada e ordenou a destruição da muralha.
63 He then hurriedly withdrew, making off for Antioch, where he found Philip already master of the city.Antiochus gave battle and captured the city by force of arms.	63 Em seguida, partiu a toda a pressa, recuperou Antioquia, onde achou Filipe como senhor da cidade. Atacou-a e tomou a cidade à força.
