1 King Antiochus, meanwhile, was making his way through the Upper Provinces; he had heard that inPersia there was a city called Elymais, renowned for its riches, its silver and gold,	1 Il re Antioco, mentre percorreva le regioni settentrionali, sentì dire che in Persia vi era Elimaide, città famosa per ricchezza, argento e oro,
2 and its very wealthy temple containing golden armour, breastplates and weapons, left there byAlexander son of Philip, the king of Macedon, the first to reign over the Greeks.	2 e che il suo tempio era molto ricco e che vi si trovavano drappi d'oro, corazze e armi, lasciatevi da Alessandro, figlio di Filippo, il re macedone che per primo regnò sui Greci.
3 He therefore went and attempted to take the city and pil age it, but without success, the citizens havingbeen forewarned.	3 Vi andò, allora, e cercò di occupare la città e di depredarla; ma non vi riuscì perché gli abitanti della città, conosciuto il suo disegno,

9 And there he remained for many days, subject to deep and recurrent fits of melancholy, until herealised that he was dying.	9 Rimase così per molti giorni, mentre una profonda tristezza si rinnovava continuamente in lui. Pensò che stava per morire.
10 Then, summoning al his Friends, he said to them, 'Sleep evades my eyes, and my heart is cowed byanxiety.	10 Perciò chiamò tutti i suoi amici e disse loro: "Il sonno s'è ritirato dai miei occhi e il mio cuore è abbattuto per l'inquietudine.
11 I have been wondering how I could have come to such a pitch of distress, so great a flood as thatwhich now engulfs me -- I who was so generous and wel -loved in my heyday.	11 Mi sono detto: A quale afflizione sono giunto e in quale grande tempesta mi dibatto! Ero, infatti, felice e amato nella mia potenza.
12 But now I recall how wrongly I acted in Jerusalem when I seized al the vessels of silver and goldthere and ordered the extermination of the inhabitants of Judah for no reason at al .	12 Ora, invece, mi assale il ricordo dei mali che ho fatto a Gerusalemme, quando presi tutti i suoi oggetti d'argento e d'oro e quando inviai a sterminare gli abitanti di Giuda senza motivo.
13 This, I am convinced, is why these misfortunes have overtaken me, and why I am dying of melancholyin a foreign land.'	13 Riconosco che è a causa di tali cose che questi mali mi hanno raggiunto; ed ecco con profonda tristezza perisco in terra straniera!".
14 He summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and made him regent of the whole kingdom.	14 Chiamò Filippo, uno dei suoi amici, e lo costituì capo di tutto il suo regno.
15 He entrusted him with his diadem, his robe and his signet, on the understanding that he was toeducate his son Antiochus and train him for the throne.	15 Gli consegnò il diadema, il suo manto e l'anello, l'incaricò di dirigere suo figlio Antioco e di prepararlo al trono.

19 Judas decided that they must be destroyed, and he mobilised the whole people to besiege them.	19 Giuda perciò, avendo deciso di sterminarli, fece convocare tutto il popolo per assediarli.
20 They assembled and laid siege to the Citadel in the year 150, building batteries and siege-engines.	20 Si radunarono, infatti, e l'anno 15 0 posero l'assedio all'Acra, costruendo piattaforme e macchine.
21 But some of the besieged broke through the blockade, and to these a number of renegades fromIsrael attached themselves.	21 Alcuni degli assediati, tuttavia, riuscirono a rompere l'accerchiamento e, unitisi a loro alcuni Israeliti rinnegati,

24 As a result our own people will have nothing to do with us; what is more, they have kil ed al those ofus they could catch, and looted our family property.	24 Per questa ragione i figli del nostro popolo si sono alienati da noi. Anzi, quanti di noi vengono scovati sono messi a morte e i nostri campi sono devastati.
25 Nor is it on us alone that their blows have fal en, but on al your territories.	25 E non è contro di noi soltanto che hanno steso la mano, ma anche contro i loro confinanti.
26 At this moment, they are laying siege to the Citadel of Jerusalem, to capture it, and they have fortifiedthe sanctuary and Beth-Zur.	26 Ecco, ora stanno accampati intorno all'Acra, in Gerusalemme, per espugnarla, e hanno fortificato il santuario e Bet-Zur.
27 Unless you forestall them at once, they wil go on to even bigger things, and then you wil never beable to control them.'	27 Se non ti affretti a prevenirli, faranno cose più gravi di queste e tu non potrai più arrestarli".
28 The king was furious when he heard this and summoned al his Friends, the generals of his forcesand the marshals of horse.	28 All'udire ciò, il re si adirò e fece radunare tutti i suoi amici, comandanti dell'esercito e preposti alla cavalleria.
29 He recruited mercenaries from other kingdoms and the Mediterranean islands.	29 Accorsero da lui truppe mercenarie anche da altri regni e dalle isole del mare.
30 His forces numbered a hundred thousand foot soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry and thirty-twoelephants with experience of battle conditions.	30 Il numero delle sue truppe era di centomila fanti, ventimila cavalieri e trentadue elefanti addestrati alla guerra.
31 They advanced through Idumaea and besieged Beth-Zur, pressing the attack for days on end; theyalso constructed siege-engines, but the defenders made a sortie and set these on fire, putting up a braveresistance.	31 Passarono per l'Idumea e posero l'accampamento contro Bet-Zur. Combatterono per molti giorni e si fecero delle macchine. Gli assediati, però, fecero una sortita e le incendiarono, combattendo valorosamente.
32 At this, Judas left the Citadel and pitched camp at Beth-Zechariah opposite the royal encampment.	32 Giuda, allora, partì anch'egli dall'Acra e si accampò presso Bet-Zaccaria, di fronte al campo del re.
33 The king rose at daybreak and marched his army at top speed down the road to Beth-Zechariah,where his forces took up their battle formations and sounded the trumpets.	33 Il re, però, si levò di buon mattino e trasferì l'armata, piena d'ardore, sulla strada di Bet-Zaccaria, dove le truppe si disposero al combattimento e suonarono le trombe.
34 The elephants were given a syrup of grapes and mulberries to prepare them for the battle.	34 Per aizzarli al combattimento, misero davanti agli elefanti succo di uva e di more.
35 These animals were distributed among the phalanxes, to each elephant being al ocated a thousandmen dressed in coats of mail with bronze helmets on their heads; five hundred picked horsemen were alsoassigned to each beast.	35 Ripartirono poi queste bestie tra le varie falangi e intorno a ciascun elefante disposero mille uomini con corazze a maglia e, sulla testa, elmi di bronzo, mentre cinquecento cavalieri scelti erano disposti intorno a ciascuna bestia.
36 The horsemen anticipated every move their elephant made; wherever it went they went with it, neverquitting it.	36 Costoro in ogni caso stavano là, ovunque era la bestia; l'accompagnavano ovunque andava e mai si allontanavano da essa.
37 On each elephant, to protect it, was a stout wooden tower, kept in position by girths, each with itsthree combatants, as well as its mahout.	37 Delle torri di legno, fortemente protette, erano assicurate su ciascuna bestia mediante congegni e in ciascuna torre vi erano quattro uomini armati che combattevano da sopra ad essa, e in più l'indiano.
38 The remainder of the cavalry was stationed on one or other of the two flanks of the army, to harassthe enemy and cover the phalanxes.	38 Quanto al resto della cavalleria, il re la ripartì di qua e di là, ai due lati dell'armata per sconvolgere il nemico e per proteggere le falangi.
39 When the sun glinted on the bronze and golden shields, the mountains caught the glint and gleamedlike fiery torches.	39 Quando poi il sole rifulse sugli scudi d'oro e di bronzo, le montagne ne furono illuminate e brillarono come lampade di fuoco.
40 One part of the royal army was deployed on the upper slopes of the mountain and the other in theval ey below; they advanced in solid, wel -disciplined formation.	40 Una parte dell'armata del re si schierò sulle alture della montagna, gli altri invece nella pianura e incominciarono ad avanzare cautamente e ordinatamente.
41 Everyone trembled at the noise made by this vast multitude, the thunder of the troops on the marchand the clanking of their armour, for it was an immense and mighty army.	41 Restavano tutti scossi quelli che udivano il clamore della loro moltitudine, il calpestio di tanta gente e l'urto delle armi. Era, infatti, un esercito straordinariamente grande e potente.
42 Judas and his army advanced to give battle, and six hundred of the king's army were killed.	42 Giuda avanzò col suo esercito all'attacco e nell'esercito del re caddero seicento uomini.
43 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, noticing that one of the elephants was royal y caparisoned and was also tal erthan al the others, and supposing that the king was mounted on it,	43 Eleàzaro, detto Auaran, vedendo uno degli elefanti bardato con armature regali, e più alto di tutti gli altri, credendo che sopra di esso vi fosse il re,

45 Boldly charging towards the creature through the thick of the phalanx, dealing death to right and left,so that the enemy scattered on either side at his onslaught,	45 Corse arditamente verso di esso in mezzo alla falange, uccidendo a destra e a sinistra, sicché i nemici si scindevano davanti a lui da una parte e dall'altra.
46 he darted in under the elephant, thrust at it from underneath, and kil ed it. The beast collapsed on topof him, and he died on the spot.	46 Cacciatosi sotto l'elefante, lo colpì di sotto e l'uccise. La bestia però cadde a terra sopra di lui ed ivi egli morì.
47 The Jews however realising how strong the king was and how ferocious his army, retreated ahead ofthem.	47 I Giudei tuttavia, vedendo la forza del re e lo slancio delle sue truppe, ripiegarono davanti ad esse.
48 The royal army moved up to encounter them outside Jerusalem, and the king began to blockadeJudaea and Mount Zion.	48 Gli uomini dell'armata del re, allora, salirono contro di essi alla volta di Gerusalemme e il re fece porre il campo contro la Giudea e contro il monte Sion,
49 He granted peace terms to the people of Beth-Zur, who evacuated the town; it lacked store ofprovisions to withstand a siege, since the land was enjoying a sabbatical year.	49 mentre egli trattò la pace con quelli che erano a Bet-Zur, i quali uscirono dalla città perché non avevano più viveri per sostenervi un assedio, essendo la terra in riposo.
50 Having occupied Beth-Zur, the king stationed a garrison there to hold it.	50 Così il re, presa Bet-Zur e postovi un presidio per custodirla,
51 He besieged the sanctuary for a long time, erecting batteries and siege-engines, flame-throwers andballistas, scorpions to discharge arrows, and catapults.	51 tenne assediato per molti giorni il santuario, erigendovi piattaforme, macchine, lanciafiamme, baliste e scorpioni per scagliare frecce e proiettili.
52 The defenders countered these by constructing their own engines and were thus able to prolong theirresistance.	52 Anche i Giudei però costruirono macchine contro le loro macchine e combatterono per molti giorni.
53 But they had no food in their stores since it was the seventh year, and because those who had takenrefuge in Judaea from the gentiles had eaten up the last of their reserves.	53 Non essendovi, tuttavia, più viveri nei depositi, perché quello era l'anno sabbatico e perché coloro che da mezzo ai gentili avevano trovato scampo in Giudea avevano consumato il resto delle provviste,
54 Only a few men were left in the Holy Place, owing to the severity of the famine; the rest had dispersed and gone home.	54 furono lasciati nel santuario soltanto pochi uomini, e gli altri, presi dalla fame, si dispersero ciascuno al suo paese.
55 Meanwhile Philip, whom King Antiochus before his death had appointed to train his son Antiochus forthe throne,	55 Frattanto Lisia venne a sapere che Filippo, incaricato dal re Antioco, ancora vivente, di educare suo figlio Antioco per prepararlo al trono,
56 had returned from Persia and Media with the forces that had accompanied the king, and was planningto seize control of affairs.	56 era ritornato dalla Persia e dalla Media con le truppe che avevano accompagnato il re e cercava di impadronirsi del potere.
57 On hearing this, Lysias at once decided to leave, and said to the king, the generals of the army andthe men, 'We are growing weaker every day, we are short of food, and the place we are besieging is welfortified; moreover the affairs of the kingdom demand our attention.	57 Allora si affrettò a far cenno di voler partire, dicendo al re, ai comandanti dell'esercito e agli uomini: "Noi diminuiamo di giorno in giorno, il cibo è poco e il luogo che teniamo assediato è fortificato, mentre le cure del regno incombono sopra di noi.
58 Let us offer the hand of friendship to these men and make peace with them and with their wholenation.	58 Ora, perciò, offriamo la destra a questi uomini e facciamo la pace con loro e con tutta la loro gente.
59 Let us grant them permission to fol ow their own customs as before, since it is our abolition of thesecustoms that has provoked them into acting like this.'	59 Concediamo loro di poter vivere secondo le loro leggi come per l'innanzi, perché è a causa delle loro leggi che noi abbiamo abolito che essi si sono irritati e hanno fatto tutte queste cose".
60 The king and his commanders approved this argument, and he offered the Jews peace terms, whichthey accepted.	60 Il suo discorso piacque al re e ai prìncipi. Si mandò perciò a trattare la pace con i Giudei e questi accettarono.
61 The king and the generals ratified the treaty by oath, and the besieged accordingly left the fortress.	61 Il re e i prìncipi giurarono davanti a loro ed essi, a tali patti, uscirono dalla fortezza.
62 The king then entered Mount Zion, but on seeing how impregnable the place was, he broke the oathhe had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be demolished.	62 Però il re, entrato nel monte Sion e visto il luogo fortificato, ruppe il giuramento che aveva fatto e comandò di abbattere il muro all'intorno.
63 He then hurriedly withdrew, making off for Antioch, where he found Philip already master of the city.Antiochus gave battle and captured the city by force of arms.	63 Quindi partì in fretta e fece ritorno ad Antiochia, dove trovò Filippo che si era impadronito della città. Combatté contro di lui e con la forza occupò la città.
