1 King Antiochus, meanwhile, was making his way through the Upper Provinces; he had heard that inPersia there was a city called Elymais, renowned for its riches, its silver and gold,	1 - Ora il re Antioco, percorrendo le regioni superiori, seppe esservi in Persia una città nobilissima, Elimalde, ricca d'argento e d'oro;
2 and its very wealthy temple containing golden armour, breastplates and weapons, left there byAlexander son of Philip, the king of Macedon, the first to reign over the Greeks.	2 ed in quella un tempio ricchissimo con arnesi d'oro, corazze e scudi lasciativi da Alessandro, figlio di Filippo, re macedone, che regnò pel primo in Grecia.
3 He therefore went and attempted to take the city and pil age it, but without success, the citizens havingbeen forewarned.	3 Venne dunque e cercava di prendere la città e depredarla ; ma non potè, perchè la cosa fu risaputa da quelli che erano nella città
4 They resisted him by force of arms. He was routed, and began retreating, very gloomily, towardsBabylon.	4 ed Insorsero e combatterono; ed il re fuggi di lì, e con gran tristezza se n'andò, per tornare In Babilonia.
5 But, while he was stil in Persia, news reached him that the armies which had invaded Judaea hadbeen routed,	5 Ed ecco venirgli in Persia l'annunzio che era stato messo in fuga il suo esercito nella terra di Giuda ;
6 and that Lysias in particular had advanced in massive strength, only to be forced to turn and flee beforethe Jews; that the latter were now stronger than ever, thanks to the arms, supplies and abundant spoils acquiredfrom the armies they had cut to pieces,	6 che primieramente Lisia s'era avanzato con grandi forze, ma era stato ributtato da'Giudei; che questi s'erano ingranditi con le armi e gli uomini e le spoglie copiose prese nel campo degli sconfitti;
7 and that they had pul ed down the abomination which he had erected on the altar in Jerusalem, hadencircled the sanctuary with high wal s as in the past, and had fortified Beth-Zur, one of his cities.	7 che avevano rovesciata l'abominazione da lui collocata sull'altare di Gerusalemme, e circondato di alte mura come prima il luogo santo, e perfino anche la sua città Betsura.
8 When the king heard this news he was amazed and profoundly shaken; he threw himself on his bedand fel sick with grief, since things had not turned out for him as he had planned.	8 Quando dunque il re seppe queste cose, si turbò, ne fu grandemente scosso, ai mise a letto, e cadde in languore per la tristezza che le cose non erano accadute come egli aveva pensato.
9 And there he remained for many days, subject to deep and recurrent fits of melancholy, until herealised that he was dying.	9 E vi stette molto tempo, crechè la sua malinconia andava crescendo, e credè di morire.
10 Then, summoning al his Friends, he said to them, 'Sleep evades my eyes, and my heart is cowed byanxiety.	10 Chiamò dunque tutti i suoi amici, e disse loro: « Il sonno se n'è andato dagli occhi miei, sono abbattuto d'animo e sgomento per l'amarezza,
11 I have been wondering how I could have come to such a pitch of distress, so great a flood as thatwhich now engulfs me -- I who was so generous and wel -loved in my heyday.	11 e dico a me stesso: - In quanta tribolazione son venuto, ed in quali onde di tristezza ora mi trovo, io che ero così lieto e riverito nella mia potenza ;
12 But now I recall how wrongly I acted in Jerusalem when I seized al the vessels of silver and goldthere and ordered the extermination of the inhabitants of Judah for no reason at al .	12 ora ripenso ai mali da me fatti in Gerusalemme, da dove portai via tutte le ricchezze d'oro e d'argento che v'erano e feci senza motivo disperdere gli abitanti della Giudea.
13 This, I am convinced, is why these misfortunes have overtaken me, and why I am dying of melancholyin a foreign land.'	13 Riconosco dunque che a causa di ciò mi sono sopraggiunti questi mali, ed ora muoio di tristezza grande In terra straniera - ».
14 He summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and made him regent of the whole kingdom.	14 E chiamò Filippo, uno de' suoi amici, e lo pose a capo di tutto il suo regno,
15 He entrusted him with his diadem, his robe and his signet, on the understanding that he was toeducate his son Antiochus and train him for the throne.	15 consegnandogli il diadema, il manto e l'anello, acciò prendesse con sè il figlio suo Antioco, e lo educasse per poi farlo re.
16 King Antiochus then died, in the year 149.	16 Ed ivi Antioco morì, l'anno centoquarantanove.
17 Lysias, learning that the king was dead, established on the throne in succession to him his sonAntiochus, whom he had brought up from childhood -- and styled him Eupator.	17 Quando Lisia seppe che il re era morto, volle che regnasse il figlio di lui, Antioco, giovinetto, che egli aveva educato e gli mise nome Eupatore.
18 The people in the Citadel at the time were blockading Israel round the sanctuary and were takingevery opportunity to harm them and to support the gentiles.	18 Or quelli che erano nella rocca [di Gerusalemme] vessavano gli Israeliti nei pressi del tempio, cercando sempre di nuocere a loro, e di avvantaggiare i Gentili.
19 Judas decided that they must be destroyed, and he mobilised the whole people to besiege them.	19 Per questo, Giuda voleva disperderli, e radunò tutte le sue forze per espugnarli.
20 They assembled and laid siege to the Citadel in the year 150, building batteries and siege-engines.	20 Si riunirono dunque, e vi misero l'assedio, l'anno centocinquanta, e fecero baliste e macchine.
21 But some of the besieged broke through the blockade, and to these a number of renegades fromIsrael attached themselves.	21 Ma alcuni degli assediati, a' quali soggiunsero alcuni empii d'Israele, uscirono,
22 They made their way to the king and said, 'How much longer are you going to wait before you seejustice done and avenge our fellows?	22 andarono al re, e gli dissero: < Inaino a quando lasceral di far giustizia, e di vendicare i nostri fratelli?
23 We were content to serve your father, to comply with his orders, and to obey his edicts.	23 Noi abbiamo voluto servire il padre tuo, fare secondo i suoi ordini, ed obbedire a' suoi editti ;
24 As a result our own people will have nothing to do with us; what is more, they have kil ed al those ofus they could catch, and looted our family property.	24 per questo, i nostri concittadini s'alienarono da noi; quanti di noi ne trovavano, tanti n'uccidevano, e confiscavano i nostri beni.
25 Nor is it on us alone that their blows have fal en, but on al your territories.	25 Nè su noi soli ha messo le mani, ma anche in tutto il nostro territorio;
26 At this moment, they are laying siege to the Citadel of Jerusalem, to capture it, and they have fortifiedthe sanctuary and Beth-Zur.	26 ora hanno circondato la rocca di Gerusalemme per impadronirsene, hanno fortificato la fortezza di Betsura,
27 Unless you forestall them at once, they wil go on to even bigger things, and then you wil never beable to control them.'	27 e se non li preverrai senza indugio, faranno cose anche più grandi, e non potrai più trattenerli ».
28 The king was furious when he heard this and summoned al his Friends, the generals of his forcesand the marshals of horse.	28 Ciò udito, il re s’adirò, e convocò tutti i suoi amici, i capi del suo esercito, ed i preposti alla cavalleria ;
29 He recruited mercenaries from other kingdoms and the Mediterranean islands.	29 ed anche da altri regni e dalle isole marittime gli vennero milizie assoldate.
30 His forces numbered a hundred thousand foot soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry and thirty-twoelephants with experience of battle conditions.	30 L’esercito suo era di centomila pedoni, ventimila cavalieri, e trentadue elefanti ammaestrati alla guerra.
31 They advanced through Idumaea and besieged Beth-Zur, pressing the attack for days on end; theyalso constructed siege-engines, but the defenders made a sortie and set these on fire, putting up a braveresistance.	31 Vennero dunque per l’Idumea, ed assediarono Betsura, combattendo per molti giorni, fecero anche delle macchine, ma quei di dentro uscirono, e le incendiarono, e si difesero valorosamente.
32 At this, Judas left the Citadel and pitched camp at Beth-Zechariah opposite the royal encampment.	32 Allora Giuda lasciò da parte la rocca, e mosse il campo per Betzacara, contro il campo del re.
33 The king rose at daybreak and marched his army at top speed down the road to Beth-Zechariah,where his forces took up their battle formations and sounded the trumpets.	33 Ed il re si mosse avanti giorno, spinse con impeto le sue schiere per la via di Betzacara, e queste si apparecchiarono alla battaglia, e sonaron le trombe.
34 The elephants were given a syrup of grapes and mulberries to prepare them for the battle.	34 Fecero bere agli elefanti del succo d’uva e di more per eccitarli a battaglia,
35 These animals were distributed among the phalanxes, to each elephant being al ocated a thousandmen dressed in coats of mail with bronze helmets on their heads; five hundred picked horsemen were alsoassigned to each beast.	35 e li spartirono fra le legioni; stavano intorno a ciascun elefante mille uomini con corazze di maglia e con elmi di bronzo in capo; cinquecento cavalieri scelti erano inoltre distribuiti attorno ad ogni animale,
36 The horsemen anticipated every move their elephant made; wherever it went they went with it, neverquitting it.	36 già da tempo avvezzati a stare dovunque era l'elefante, andare dovunque esso andava, e non lasciarlo mai.
37 On each elephant, to protect it, was a stout wooden tower, kept in position by girths, each with itsthree combatants, as well as its mahout.	37 Portavano poi, gli elefanti, sul dorso, delle forti torri di legno, a difesa, e sulle torri, macchine di guerra; ed in ciascuna torre trentadue uomini di valore, che di lì combattevano, ed un indiano per guidare la bestia.
38 The remainder of the cavalry was stationed on one or other of the two flanks of the army, to harassthe enemy and cover the phalanxes.	38 Il resto della cavalleria fu posto di qua e di là, in due ali, per eccitare con le trombe l'esercito e mantenere serrate le file dei fanti.
39 When the sun glinted on the bronze and golden shields, the mountains caught the glint and gleamedlike fiery torches.	39 Ora quando il sole rifulse sugli elmi d’oro e di bronzo, i monti ne risplenderono, come illuminati da lampade accese.
40 One part of the royal army was deployed on the upper slopes of the mountain and the other in theval ey below; they advanced in solid, wel -disciplined formation.	40 Una parte dell’esercito regio s’avviò per le alture de' monti, un'altra per la pianura, procedendo cauti ed ordinati.
41 Everyone trembled at the noise made by this vast multitude, the thunder of the troops on the marchand the clanking of their armour, for it was an immense and mighty army.	41 Gli abitanti di que’ luoghi restavano attoniti allo strepito della moltitudine, al passo di tanta gente, al cozzo delle armi; era infatti un esercito di gran numero e forza.
42 Judas and his army advanced to give battle, and six hundred of the king's army were killed.	42 Giuda dunque ed i suol vennero avanti in battaglia, e dell'esercito del re caddero seicento uomini.
43 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, noticing that one of the elephants was royal y caparisoned and was also tal erthan al the others, and supposing that the king was mounted on it,	43 Eleazaro figlio di Saura vide un elefante armato di regia armatura che sopravanzava tutti gli altri, e giudicò che il re vi fosse sopra;
44 sacrificed himself to save his people and win an imperishable name.	44 allora volle sacrificarsi per liberare il suo popolo ed acquistarsi un nome immortale.
45 Boldly charging towards the creature through the thick of the phalanx, dealing death to right and left,so that the enemy scattered on either side at his onslaught,	45 Corse audacemente verso di quello, passando in mezzo alla legione, uccidendo a destra e a sinistra; cadevano quelli di qua e di là,
46 he darted in under the elephant, thrust at it from underneath, and kil ed it. The beast collapsed on topof him, and he died on the spot.	46 ed egli arrivò tra i piedi dell'elefante, e gli si mise sotto, e l'uccise, e questo cadendogli addosso ve lo schiacciò.
47 The Jews however realising how strong the king was and how ferocious his army, retreated ahead ofthem.	47 Ma vedendo [i Giudei] le forze del re, e l'impeto del suo esercito, si ritirarono.
48 The royal army moved up to encounter them outside Jerusalem, and the king began to blockadeJudaea and Mount Zion.	48 Le schiere del re salirono verso Gerusalemme e posero il campo in Giudea e contro il monte Sion.
49 He granted peace terms to the people of Beth-Zur, who evacuated the town; it lacked store ofprovisions to withstand a siege, since the land was enjoying a sabbatical year.	49 Concluse la pace con quelli che erano in Betsura, ed essi uscirono dalla città, perchè dentro non vi eran più viveri, essendo quello per la terra un anno sabatico.
50 Having occupied Beth-Zur, the king stationed a garrison there to hold it.	50 Il re dunque s'impadronì di Betsura, e vi pose a guardia un presidio.
51 He besieged the sanctuary for a long time, erecting batteries and siege-engines, flame-throwers andballistas, scorpions to discharge arrows, and catapults.	51 Poi andò ad accamparsi di contro al luogo santo, per molti giorni, piantandovi baliste, macchine, attrezzi per lanciar fuoco, arnesi per scagliar pietre e dardi, scorpioni per lanciar frecce, e fionde.
52 The defenders countered these by constructing their own engines and were thus able to prolong theirresistance.	52 Ma anche i Giudei opposero macchine a macchine, e si difesero a lungo.
53 But they had no food in their stores since it was the seventh year, and because those who had takenrefuge in Judaea from the gentiles had eaten up the last of their reserves.	53 Non v’erano però viveri nella città, perchè era Panno sabatico, ed i Gentili rimasti in Giudea avevano consumato gli avanzi messi da parte;
54 Only a few men were left in the Holy Place, owing to the severity of the famine; the rest had dispersed and gone home.	54 perciò non rimasero nel luogo santo che pochi uomini, la fame avendoli colpiti, ed essendosi dispersi ciascuno pel proprio paese.
55 Meanwhile Philip, whom King Antiochus before his death had appointed to train his son Antiochus forthe throne,	55 E Lisia seppe che Filippo, scelto dal re Antioco, prima di morire, a tutore del figlio suo Antioco sinché questi regnasse,
56 had returned from Persia and Media with the forces that had accompanied the king, and was planningto seize control of affairs.	56 era tornato dallo Persia e dalla Media conducendo seco un esercito, ed aspirava a prender egli il governo del regno.
57 On hearing this, Lysias at once decided to leave, and said to the king, the generals of the army andthe men, 'We are growing weaker every day, we are short of food, and the place we are besieging is welfortified; moreover the affairs of the kingdom demand our attention.	57 S'affrettò allora ad andar a dire al re ed ai capi delPesercito: « Ogni giorno scemiamo di numero, abbiam pochi viveri, il luogo che assediamo è ben difeso, e dobbiamo provvedere al buon ordine del regno.
58 Let us offer the hand of friendship to these men and make peace with them and with their wholenation.	58 Ora dunque diamo la mano a questa gente, e facciamo pace con loro e con tutta la loro nazione;
59 Let us grant them permission to fol ow their own customs as before, since it is our abolition of thesecustoms that has provoked them into acting like this.'	59 stabiliamo con loro che si regolino secondo le loro leggi, come prima ; giacché essi si son adirati con noi, ed han fatto tutte queste cose, per amore delle loro leggi che noi avevamo disprezzate ».
60 The king and his commanders approved this argument, and he offered the Jews peace terms, whichthey accepted.	60 Piacque la proposta al re ed ai principi, e mandarono ai Giudei per far pace, ed essi l'accettarono;
61 The king and the generals ratified the treaty by oath, and the besieged accordingly left the fortress.	61 il re ed i principi la giurarono, e quelli uscirono dalla cittadella.
62 The king then entered Mount Zion, but on seeing how impregnable the place was, he broke the oathhe had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be demolished.	62 Ed il re entrò sul monte Sion, e vide le sue fortificazioni, e subito ruppe il giuramento da lui dato, e fece atterrare il muro che lo contornava.
63 He then hurriedly withdrew, making off for Antioch, where he found Philip already master of the city.Antiochus gave battle and captured the city by force of arms.	63 Dipoi si partì frettolosamente, tornò in Antiochia, e trovò Filippo che si era impadronito della città; combattè contro di lui, ed occupò egli la città.
