1 The king of Egypt then assembled an army as numerous as the sands of the seashore, with manyships, and set out to take possession of Alexander's kingdom by a ruse and add it to his own kingdom.	1 Ma il re d'Egitto radunò un esercito innumerevole come l'arena che è sulla spiaggia del mare, e molte navi, e cercava di conquistare per inganno il regno di Alessandro, per aggiungerlo al suo regno.
2 He set off for Syria with protestations of peace, and the people of the towns opened their gates to himand came out to meet him, since King Alexander's orders were to welcome him, Ptolemy being his father-in-law.	2 E con parole di pace si avanzò nella Siria: gli aprivano le città e gli andavano incontro, perchè il re Alessandro aveva comandato di uscirgli incontro, essendo suo suocero.

11 He made this accusation because he coveted his kingdom.	11 Così lo infamava, perchè ne voleva il regno.
12 Having carried off his daughter and bestowed her on Demetrius, he broke with Alexander, and theirenmity became open.	12 E gli tolse la figliola e la diede a Demetrio, e si alienò da Alessandro, e le loro inimicizie divennero pubbliche.

17 Zabdiel the Arab cut off Alexander's head and sent it to Ptolemy.	17 L'arabo Zabdiel troncò il capo ad Alessandro e lo mandò a Tolomeo.

22 The king was angered by the news. No sooner had he been informed than he set out and came toPtolemais. 23 When Jonathan heard this, he gave orders for the siege to continue; he then selected a deputationfrom the elders of Israel and the priests, and took the deliberate risk	23 Udito ciò, Gionata ordinò di continuare l'assedio, e, presi seco degli anziani d'Israele e dei sacerdoti, si espose al pericolo.
24 of himself taking silver and gold, clothing and numerous other presents, and going to Ptolemais toface the king, whose favour he succeeded in winning;	24 E, portando seco oro, argento, vesti e molti altri regali, andò a trovare il re a Tolemaide, e trovò grazia davanti a lui.
25 and although one or two renegades of his nation brought charges against him,	25 Alcuni iniqui della sua nazione portarono delle accuse contro di lui;

32 "King Demetrius to his father Lasthenes, greetings.	32 Il re Demetrio a Lastene, suo padre, salute.
33 "The nation of the Jews is our al y; they fulfil their obligations to us, and in view of their goodwilltowards us we have decided to show them our bounty.	33 Abbiamo risoluto di fare del bene alla nazione dei Giudei, nostri amici, e che osservano ciò che è giusto riguardo a noi, per la benevolenza che hanno verso di noi.
34 We confirm them in their possession of the territory of Judaea and the three districts of Aphairema,Lydda and Ramathaim; these were annexed to Judaea from Samaritan territory, with al their dependencies, infavour of al who offer sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the royal dues which the king formerly received fromthem every year, from the yield of the soil and the fruit crops.	34 Confermiamo adunque ad essi tutto il territorio della Giudea, e le tre città, (Afcrema), Lida e Ramata, che sono state aggiunte alla Giudea dalla Samaria, con tutto il loro territorio; in favore di tutti quelli che vanno a sacrificare a Gerusalemme rimettiamo ciò che prima il re esigeva e per i frutti della terra delle piante;
35 As regards our other rights over the tithes and taxes due to us, over the salt marshes, and the crowntaxes due to us, as from today we release them from them al .	35 e fin da ora condoniamo loro ciò che a noi è dovuto delle decime, dei tributi, e le saline, e le corone che eran portate a noi.
36 None of these grants will be revoked henceforth or anywhere.	36 Tutto ciò loro concediamo, e tutto irrevocabilmente da questo momento per sempre.
37 You wil make yourself responsible for having a copy of this made, to be given to Jonathan anddisplayed on the holy mountain in a conspicuous place." '	37 Or dunque procurate di fare un esemplare di queste cose, e sia dato a Gionata, affinchè sia depositato sul monte Sion, in luogo distinto ».
38 When King Demetrius saw that the country was at peace under his rule and that no resistance wasoffered him, he dismissed his forces, and sent al the men home, except for the foreign troops that he hadrecruited in the foreign island, thus incurring the enmity of the veterans who had served his ancestors.	38 Or il re Demetrio, visto che la terra era tranquilla davanti a lui, e che nessuno gli resisteva, congedò tutto il suo esercito, rimandando ciascuno a casa sua, eccettuate le truppe straniere che aveva assoldate dalle isole delle nazioni: per questo si inimicò tutte le milizie dei suoi padri.

40 and repeatedly urged him to let him have the boy, so that he might succeed his father as king; hetold him of Demetrius' decision and of the resentment it had aroused among his troops. E stette lì molto tempo.
41 Jonathan, meanwhile, sent to ask King Demetrius to withdraw the garrisons from the Citadel inJerusalem and from the other fortresses, since they were constantly fighting Israel.	41 Or Gionata mandò a chiedere al re Demetrio di far ritirare quelli che erano nella cittadella di Gerusalemme e negli altri presidii, perchè facevano la guerra a Israele.
42 Demetrius sent word back to Jonathan, 'Not only wil I do this for you and for your nation, but I shalheap honours on you and your nation if I find a favourable opportunity.	42 E Demetrio mandò a dire a Gionata: « Io non farò soltanto questo per te e per la tua nazione, ma colmerò di splendidi onori te e la tua nazione, quando ne avrò l'occasione.
43 For the present, you would do wel to send me reinforcements, since al my troops have deserted.'	43 Ma ora farai bene a mandare in mio aiuto degli uomini, perchè il mio esercito se n'è andato tutto ».
44 Jonathan sent three thousand experienced soldiers to him in Antioch; when they reached the king,he was delighted at their arrival.	44 E Gionata gli mandò ad Antiochia tremila uomini valorosi, che andarono dal re, il quale ebbe gran piacere del loro arrivo.
45 The citizens crowded together in the centre of the city, to the number of some hundred and twentythousand, intending to kil the king.	45 E gli abitanti di quella città si adunarono, in numero di centoventi mila uomini, e volevano uccidere il re.
46 The king took refuge in the palace, while the citizens occupied the thoroughfares of the city andbegan to attack.	46 Il re si rifugiò nella reggia, e gli abitanti della città, occupate le strade, cominciarono a combattere.
47 The king then cal ed on the Jews for help; and these al ral ied round him, then fanned out throughthe city, and that day kil ed about a hundred thousand of its inhabitants.	47 Allora il re chiamò in suo aiuto i Giudei, i quali si radunarono tutti insieme intorno a lui, e poi si sparsero tutti per la città,
48 They fired the city, seizing a great deal of plunder at the same time, and secured the king's safety.	48 e vi uccisero in quel giorno cento mila uomini, e vi appiccarono il fuoco, e presero molte spoglie in quel giorno, e liberarono il re.
49 When the citizens saw that the Jews had the city at their mercy, their courage failed them, and theymade an abject appeal to the king,	49 E quelli della città, vedendo come i Giudei erano padroni assoluti della città, si persero di coraggio, e supplichevoli gridarono al re, dicendo:
50 'Give us the right hand of peace, and let the Jews stop their fight against us and the city.'	50 « Porgici la destra, e cessino i Giudei di combattere contro di noi e contro la città! ».
51 They threw down their arms and made peace. The Jews were covered in glory, in the eyes of theking and of everyone else in his kingdom. Having won renown in his kingdom, they returned to Jerusalem ladenwith booty.	51 E, gettate le armi, fecero la pace; e i Giudei acquistarono molta gloria davanti al re e davanti a tutti quelli che erano nel suo regno, e divennero famosi nel regno, e se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme ricchi di spoglie.
52 Thus, King Demetrius sat al the more securely on his royal throne, and the country was quiet underhis government.	52 Ma quando Demetrio fu nel sicuro possesso del suo regno, e la terra stette tranquilla davanti a lui,
53 But he gave the lie to all the promises he had made, and changed his attitude to Jonathan, givingnothing in return for the services Jonathan had rendered him, but thwarting him at every turn.	53 mancò a tutto quello che aveva promesso, si alienò da Gionata, e non lo trattò secondo i benefizi da lui ricevuti, ma assai lo vessava.
54 After this, Trypho came back with the little boy Antiochus, who became king and was crowned.	54 Dopo tali cose tornò Trifone, e con lui era Antioco, ancor fanciullo, il quale fu proclamato re e cinse il diadema.
55 Al the troops that Demetrius had summarily dismissed rallied to Antiochus, and made war onDemetrius, who turned tail and fled.	55 E si radunarono intorno a lui tutti i soldati mandati via da Demetrio, i quali combatterono contro Demetrio, che fuggì e fu disfatto.
56 Trypho captured the elephants and seized Antioch.	56 Allora Trifone, prese le bestie, occupò Antiochia.
57 Young Antiochus then wrote as fol ows to Jonathan: 'I confirm you in the high-priesthood and set youover the four districts and appoint you one of the Friends of the King.'	57 E il giovane Antioco scrisse a Gionata in questi termini: « Ti confermo nel sacerdozio, ti stabilisco sopra le quattro città, e ti dò il posto tra gli amici del re ».
58 He sent him a service of gold plate, and granted him the right to drink from gold vessels, and to wearthe purple and the golden brooch.	58 E gli mandò dei vasi d'oro pel servizio (da tavola) e l'autorizzò a bere in (coppe) d'oro, a vestir di porpora, a portar la fibbia d'oro.
59 He appointed his brother Simon commander-in-chief of the region from the Ladder of Tyre to thefrontiers of Egypt.	59 E il suo fratello Simone lo creò governatore dei confini di Tiro fino a quelli dell'Egitto.
60 Jonathan then set out and made a progress through Transeuphrates and its towns, and the entireSyrian army rallied to his support. He came to Ascalon and was received in state by the inhabitants.	60 E Gionata si mosse e si mise a percorrere le città al di là del fiume; intorno a lui si radunò tutto l'esercito della Siria, per aiutarlo; ed egli giunse ad Ascalona, e quelli della città gli uscirono incontro ad onorarlo.
61 From there he proceeded to Gaza, but the people of Gaza shut him out, so he laid siege to it,burning down its suburbs and plundering them.	61 E di lì passò a Gaza. Avendogli quelli di Gaza chiuse le porte, egli l'assediò, diede alle fiamme i suoi dintorni e li saccheggiò.
62 The people of Gaza then pleaded with Jonathan, and he made peace with them; but he took thesons of their chief men as hostages and sent them away to Jerusalem. He then travel ed through the country asfar as Damascus.	62 Allora quelli di Gaza si raccomandarono a Gionata, ed egli diede loro la destra, e, presi come ostaggi i loro figlioli, li mandò a Gerusalemme, e scorse per la regione fino a Damasco.
63 Jonathan now learned that Demetrius' generals had arrived at Kadesh in Galilee with a large army,intending to remove him from office,	63 E Gionata intese come i capitani di Demetrio s'erano raccolti in Cades, che è nella Galilea, con numeroso esercito, volendo allontanarlo dagli affari del regno.
64 and went to engage them, leaving his brother Simon inside the country.	64 Ed egli si mosse contro di essi, lasciando nella provincia Simone suo fratello.
65 Simon laid siege to Beth-Zur, attacking it day after day, and blockading the inhabitants	65 Simone andò ad attaccare Betsura, e siccome li tenne assediati e rinchiusi per molto tempo,

67 Jonathan and his army, meanwhile, having pitched camp by the Lake of Gennesar, rose early, andby morning were already in the plain of Hazor.	67 Intanto Gionata e il suo esercito erano arrivati alle acque di Genezar, e avanti l'alba (del giorno dopo) giunsero nella campagna di Asor.
68 The foreigners' army advanced to fight them on the plain, having first positioned an ambush for himin the mountains. While the main body was advancing directly towards the Jews,	68 Ed ecco si videro davanti gli accampamenti degli stranieri, i quali avevan loro tesa un'imboscata. Mentre (Gionata) andava loro incontro,
69 the troops in ambush broke cover and attacked first.	69 quelle erano nell'imboscata, vennero fuori loro nascondigli, e attaccarono la battaglia.
70 Al the men with Jonathan fled; no one was left, except Mattathias son of Absalom and Judas son ofChalphi, the generals of his army.	70 Allora quelli che erano con Gionata si diedero tutti alla fuga: non restò nessuno, ad eccezione di Matatia, figlio di Absalom, e di Giuda, figlio di Calfi, capo dell'esercito.
71 At this, Jonathan tore his garments, put dust on his head, and prayed.	71 Allora Gionata si stracciò vesti, si gettò della terra sul capo, e pregò.
72 Then he returned to the fight and routed the enemy, who fled.	72 Poi tornò contro di essi a combatterli, e li mise in fuga, dopo averli attaccati.
73 When the fugitives from his own forces saw this, they came back to him and joined in the pursuit asfar as Kadesh where the enemy encampment was, and there they themselves pitched camp.	73 E la sua gente che fuggiva, veduto questo, tornarono a lui, e inseguirono tutti insieme con lui il nemico fino a Cades, dove aveva il campo: arrivaron fin là.
74 About three thousand of the foreign troops fel that day. Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem.	74 E degli stranieri in quel giorno ne perirono tre mila, e Gionata tornò in Gerusalemme.
