1 The king of Egypt then assembled an army as numerous as the sands of the seashore, with manyships, and set out to take possession of Alexander's kingdom by a ruse and add it to his own kingdom.	1 Il re dell'Egitto radunò truppe, numerose come la rena che è sulla riva del mare, e navi in quantità, volendo impadronirsi con astuzia del regno di Alessandro per annetterlo al suo proprio regno.
2 He set off for Syria with protestations of peace, and the people of the towns opened their gates to himand came out to meet him, since King Alexander's orders were to welcome him, Ptolemy being his father-in-law.	2 Si mosse alla volta della Siria con parole di pace e gli abitanti delle città gli aprivano le porte e gli andavano incontro, perché il re Alessandro, essendo suo suocero, aveva ordinato di andargli incontro.

11 He made this accusation because he coveted his kingdom.	11 In realtà egli lo biasimava perché bramava impossessarsi del suo regno.
12 Having carried off his daughter and bestowed her on Demetrius, he broke with Alexander, and theirenmity became open.	12 Quindi, toltagli sua figlia, la diede a Demetrio. In questo modo si separò da Alessandro e la loro inimicizia si fece manifesta.

16 Alexander fled to Arabia for refuge, and King Ptolemy reigned supreme.	16 Alessandro fuggì in Arabia per trovarvi riparo; il re Tolomeo invece fu glorificato.
17 Zabdiel the Arab cut off Alexander's head and sent it to Ptolemy.	17 L'arabo Zabdiel mozzò la testa di Alessandro e l'inviò a Tolomeo.

22 The king was angered by the news. No sooner had he been informed than he set out and came toPtolemais. 29 The king consented, and wrote Jonathan a rescript covering the whole matter, in these terms:	29 Il re accondiscese e scrisse a Gionata, intorno a tutte queste cose, lettere così concepite:
30 'King Demetrius to Jonathan his brother, and to the Jewish nation, greetings.	30 "Re Demetrio al fratello Gionata e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute!
31 'We have written to Lasthenes our cousin concerning you, and now send you this copy of ourrescript for your own information:	31 Una copia della lettera che abbiamo scritta a Làstene, nostro parente, a vostro riguardo, la scriviamo anche per voi affinché ne prendiate conoscenza.
32 "King Demetrius to his father Lasthenes, greetings.	32 Il re Demetrio al padre Làstene, salute!
33 "The nation of the Jews is our al y; they fulfil their obligations to us, and in view of their goodwilltowards us we have decided to show them our bounty.	33 Alla nazione dei Giudei, che sono nostri amici e osservano ciò che è giusto verso di noi, abbiamo giudicato opportuno far loro del bene in ragione dei buoni sentimenti che hanno per noi.
34 We confirm them in their possession of the territory of Judaea and the three districts of Aphairema,Lydda and Ramathaim; these were annexed to Judaea from Samaritan territory, with al their dependencies, infavour of al who offer sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the royal dues which the king formerly received fromthem every year, from the yield of the soil and the fruit crops.	34 Pertanto confermiamo loro il possesso dei territori della Giudea e dei tre distretti di Afèrema, Lidda e Ramatàim. Essi, con le loro dipendenze, dalla Samaria furono annessi alla Giudea a favore di tutti quelli che offrono sacrifici in Gerusalemme, in compenso delle imposte regali che il re prendeva da essi per l'innanzi ogni anno, sui prodotti della terra e sui frutti degli alberi.
35 As regards our other rights over the tithes and taxes due to us, over the salt marshes, and the crowntaxes due to us, as from today we release them from them al .	35 Quanto agli altri diritti che abbiamo sulle decime e sui tributi che ci si devono, sulle saline e le corone che ci erano dovute, da questo momento vi rinunziamo completamente.
36 None of these grants will be revoked henceforth or anywhere.	36 Nessuna di queste disposizioni sarà revocata a partire da questo momento e per sempre.
37 You wil make yourself responsible for having a copy of this made, to be given to Jonathan anddisplayed on the holy mountain in a conspicuous place." '	37 Abbiate dunque cura di fare una copia della presente e di consegnarla a Gionata affinché sia collocata sul monte santo in luogo ben visibile".
38 When King Demetrius saw that the country was at peace under his rule and that no resistance wasoffered him, he dismissed his forces, and sent al the men home, except for the foreign troops that he hadrecruited in the foreign island, thus incurring the enmity of the veterans who had served his ancestors.	38 Il re Demetrio, vedendo che il paese era calmo davanti a lui e che nessuno gli si opponeva, licenziò tutte le sue truppe, ognuno al proprio paese, ad eccezione delle truppe straniere, che egli aveva reclutato dalle isole delle nazioni. 39 Now Trypho, one of Alexander's former supporters, noting that al the troops were muttering againstDemetrius, went to see Iamleku, the Arab who was bringing up Antiochus, Alexander's young son,	39 Trifone ch'era stato per l'innanzi dalla parte di Alessandro, vedendo che tutte le truppe mormoravano contro Demetrio, si recò presso l'arabo Imalcue, che allevava Antioco, il giovane figlio di Alessandro,
40 and repeatedly urged him to let him have the boy, so that he might succeed his father as king; hetold him of Demetrius' decision and of the resentment it had aroused among his troops. He spent a long timethere.	40 e lo circuiva affinché glielo consegnasse per farlo regnare al posto di suo padre. Gli parlò pure delle cose che Demetrio aveva ordinato e dell'inimicizia che i suoi soldati nutrivano per lui; e rimase lì per molti giorni.
41 Jonathan, meanwhile, sent to ask King Demetrius to withdraw the garrisons from the Citadel inJerusalem and from the other fortresses, since they were constantly fighting Israel.	41 Gionata mandò a chiedere al re Demetrio di rimuovere da Gerusalemme gli uomini che erano nell'Acra e gli altri che erano nelle fortezze, perché facevano guerra a Israele.
42 Demetrius sent word back to Jonathan, 'Not only wil I do this for you and for your nation, but I shalheap honours on you and your nation if I find a favourable opportunity.	42 Demetrio però mandò a dire a Gionata: "Non solo questo farò per te e per la tua nazione, ma colmerò di onori te e la tua nazione, appena mi si presenti la buona occasione.
43 For the present, you would do wel to send me reinforcements, since al my troops have deserted.'	43 Ora però farai bene a inviarmi uomini che combattano con me, poiché tutte le truppe mi si sono allontanate".
44 Jonathan sent three thousand experienced soldiers to him in Antioch; when they reached the king,he was delighted at their arrival.	44 Gionata gli inviò in Antiochia tremila uomini molto valorosi e, quando questi giunsero presso il re, il re si rallegrò per il loro arrivo.
45 The citizens crowded together in the centre of the city, to the number of some hundred and twentythousand, intending to kil the king.	45 Gli abitanti della città si radunarono al centro della città in numero di circa centoventimila e volevano eliminare il re.
46 The king took refuge in the palace, while the citizens occupied the thoroughfares of the city andbegan to attack.	46 Il re però si rifugiò nel palazzo, mentre gli abitanti della città invadevano le vie della città e incominciavano a combattere.
47 The king then cal ed on the Jews for help; and these al ral ied round him, then fanned out throughthe city, and that day kil ed about a hundred thousand of its inhabitants.	47 Il re allora chiamò in soccorso i Giudei e questi si radunarono presso di lui tutti insieme; poi si dispersero per la città e ne uccisero, in quel giorno, circa centomila.
48 They fired the city, seizing a great deal of plunder at the same time, and secured the king's safety.	48 Diedero fuoco alla città, raccolsero molte spoglie in quel giorno e salvarono il re.
49 When the citizens saw that the Jews had the city at their mercy, their courage failed them, and theymade an abject appeal to the king,	49 Ora gli abitanti della città, quando videro che i Giudei si erano impadroniti della città a loro piacimento, si persero d'animo e incominciarono ad elevare suppliche al re dicendo:
50 'Give us the right hand of peace, and let the Jews stop their fight against us and the city.'	50 "Dacci la destra e cessino i Giudei di combattere contro di noi e contro la città!".
51 They threw down their arms and made peace. The Jews were covered in glory, in the eyes of theking and of everyone else in his kingdom. Having won renown in his kingdom, they returned to Jerusalem ladenwith booty.	51 Deposero le armi e fecero la pace. Così i Giudei si coprirono di gloria davanti al re e a tutti i cittadini del suo regno e ritornarono a Gerusalemme con molte spoglie.
52 Thus, King Demetrius sat al the more securely on his royal throne, and the country was quiet underhis government.	52 In questo modo il re Demetrio poté sedersi sul trono del suo regno e il paese rimase tranquillo sotto di lui.
53 But he gave the lie to all the promises he had made, and changed his attitude to Jonathan, givingnothing in return for the services Jonathan had rendered him, but thwarting him at every turn.	53 Egli poi, però, rinnegò tutto ciò che aveva promesso, si mostrò ostile a Gionata e non ricambiò i favori che questi gli aveva reso; anzi incominciò a vessarlo duramente.
54 After this, Trypho came back with the little boy Antiochus, who became king and was crowned.	54 Dopo queste cose, Trifone ritornò con Antioco, ancora molto giovane. Incominciò a regnare e cinse il diadema.
55 Al the troops that Demetrius had summarily dismissed rallied to Antiochus, and made war onDemetrius, who turned tail and fled.	55 Si radunarono attorno a lui tutte le truppe che Demetrio aveva congedato e combatterono contro costui, il quale fu messo in fuga e travolto,
56 Trypho captured the elephants and seized Antioch.	56 mentre Trifone catturò gli elefanti e si impadronì di Antiochia.
57 Young Antiochus then wrote as fol ows to Jonathan: 'I confirm you in the high-priesthood and set youover the four districts and appoint you one of the Friends of the King.'	57 Il giovanetto Antioco scrisse a Gionata dicendogli: "Ti confermo il sommo sacerdozio, ti pongo a capo dei quattro distretti e ti annovero tra gli amici del re".
58 He sent him a service of gold plate, and granted him the right to drink from gold vessels, and to wearthe purple and the golden brooch.	58 Gl'inviò vasellame d'oro e un servizio da tavola, gli diede facoltà di bere in vasi d'oro, d'indossare la porpora e di portare una fibbia d'oro.
59 He appointed his brother Simon commander-in-chief of the region from the Ladder of Tyre to thefrontiers of Egypt.	59 Inoltre costituì suo fratello Simone stratega dalla Scala di Tiro sino ai confini dell'Egitto.
60 Jonathan then set out and made a progress through Transeuphrates and its towns, and the entireSyrian army rallied to his support. He came to Ascalon and was received in state by the inhabitants.	60 Gionata cominciò a percorrere la regione d'oltre il fiume e le varie città, e tutto l'esercito di Siria si unì a lui per combattere insieme. 61 From there he proceeded to Gaza, but the people of Gaza shut him out, so he laid siege to it,burning down its suburbs and plundering them.	61 Di qui andò a Gaza; ma quelli di Gaza gli chiusero le porte. Allora egli l'assediò, incendiò i suoi sobborghi e li saccheggiò.
62 The people of Gaza then pleaded with Jonathan, and he made peace with them; but he took thesons of their chief men as hostages and sent them away to Jerusalem. 66 til they sued for peace, which he granted them, though he expel ed them from the town andoccupied it, stationing a garrison there.	66 Lo supplicarono di accettare la loro destra ed egli acconsentì. Tuttavia li espulse di lì, occupò la città e vi pose una guarnigione.
67 Jonathan and his army, meanwhile, having pitched camp by the Lake of Gennesar, rose early, andby morning were already in the plain of Hazor.	67 Gionata e il suo esercito, invece, andarono ad accamparsi presso le acque di Genesaret e di buon mattino giunsero nella pianura di Casòr.
68 The foreigners' army advanced to fight them on the plain, having first positioned an ambush for himin the mountains. While the main body was advancing directly towards the Jews,	68 Ed ecco che l'esercito degli stranieri stava loro davanti nella pianura, mentre altri organizzavano un'imboscata contro di lui sui monti. Quelli avanzarono frontalmente,
69 the troops in ambush broke cover and attacked first.	69 quando gl'imboscati, usciti dai loro luoghi, attaccarono battaglia.

71 At this, Jonathan tore his garments, put dust on his head, and prayed.	71 Gionata si stracciò le vesti, si cosparse il capo di polvere e pregò.
72 Then he returned to the fight and routed the enemy, who fled.	72 Quindi si voltò contro i nemici combattendo, li mise in rotta e fuggirono.
73 When the fugitives from his own forces saw this, they came back to him and joined in the pursuit asfar as Kadesh where the enemy encampment was, and there they themselves pitched camp.	73 Visto ciò, quelli che erano fuggiti tornarono da lui e con lui li inseguirono fino al loro accampamento a Cades. Quivi si accamparono.
74 About three thousand of the foreign troops fel that day. Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem.	74 Gli stranieri caduti in quel giorno furono circa tremila uomini. Quindi Gionata fece ritorno a Gerusalemme.
