1 The king of Egypt then assembled an army as numerous as the sands of the seashore, with manyships, and set out to take possession of Alexander's kingdom by a ruse and add it to his own kingdom.	1 El rey de Egipto reunió fuerzas numerosas como las arenas que hay a orillas del mar y muchas naves. Intentaba hacerse por astucia con el reino de Alejandro y unirlo al suyo.
2 He set off for Syria with protestations of peace, and the people of the towns opened their gates to himand came out to meet him, since King Alexander's orders were to welcome him, Ptolemy being his father-in-law.	2 Salió, pues, para Siria en son de paz y la gente de las ciudades le abría las puertas y salía a su encuentro, ya que tenían orden del rey Alejandro de salir a recibirle por ser suegro suyo.
3 On entering the towns, however, Ptolemy quartered troops as a garrison in each one.	3 Pero una vez que entraba en las ciudades, Tolomeo ponía tropas de guarnición en cada una de ellas.
4 When he reached Azotus he was shown the burnt-out temple of Dagon, with Azotus and its suburbsin ruins, corpses scattered here and there, and the charred remains of those whom Jonathan had burnt to deathin the battle, piled into heaps along his route.	4 Cuando llegó cerca de Azoto le mostraron el templo de Dagón incendiado, la ciudad y sus aldeas destruidas, los cadáveres por el suelo y los restos calcinados de los abrasados en la guerra, pues habían hecho montones de ellos por el recorrido del rey.
5 They explained to the king what Jonathan had done, hoping for his disapproval; but the king saidnothing.	5 Le contaron lo que Jonatán había hecho para que el rey le censurara, pero el rey guardó silencio.
6 Jonathan went in state to meet the king at Joppa, where they greeted each other and spent the night.	6 Jonatán fue al encuentro del rey a Joppe con fasto; se saludaron y pasaron allí aquella noche.
7 Jonathan accompanied the king as far as the river called Eleutherus, and then returned to Jerusalem.	7 Acompañó Jonatán al rey hasta el río llamado Eléuteros y regresó a Jerusalén.
8 King Ptolemy for his part occupied the coastal towns as far as Seleucia on the coast, al the whilematuring his wicked designs against Alexander.	8 Por su parte el rey Tolomeo se hizo dueño de las ciudades de la costa hasta Seleucia Marítima y meditaba planes malvados contra Alejandro.
9 He sent envoys to King Demetrius to say, 'Come and let us make a treaty; I shall give you mydaughter, whom Alexander now has, and you shal rule your father's kingdom.	9 Envió embajadores al rey Demetrio diciéndole: «Ven y concertemos entre nosotros una alianza. Te daré mi hija, la que tiene Alejandro, y reinarás en el reino de tu padre.
10 I regret having given my daughter to that man, since he has tried to kil me.'	10 Estoy arrepentido de haberle dado mi hija pues ha intentado asesinarme».
11 He made this accusation because he coveted his kingdom.	11 Le hacía estos cargos porque codiciaba su reino.
12 Having carried off his daughter and bestowed her on Demetrius, he broke with Alexander, and theirenmity became open.	12 Quitándole, pues, su hija se la dio a Demetrio, rompió con Alejandro y quedó manifiesta la enemistad entre ambos.
13 Ptolemy next entered Antioch and assumed the crown of Asia; he now wore on his head the twocrowns of Egypt and Asia.	13 Tolomeo entró en Antioquía y se ciñó la diadema de Asia, con lo que rodeó su frente de dos diademas, la de Egipto y la de Asia.
14 King Alexander was in Cilicia at the time, since the people of those parts had risen in revolt,	14 En este tiempo se encontraba el rey Alejandro en Cilicia por haberse sublevado la gente de aquella región.
15 but when he heard the news, he advanced on his rival to give battle, while Ptolemy for his part alsotook the field, met him with a strong force and routed him.	15 Al saber lo que ocurría, vino a luchar contra él. Tolomeo salió con fuerzas poderosas, fue a su encuentro y le derrotó.
16 Alexander fled to Arabia for refuge, and King Ptolemy reigned supreme.	16 Alejandro huyó a Arabia buscando un refugio allí y el rey Tolomeo quedó triunfador.
17 Zabdiel the Arab cut off Alexander's head and sent it to Ptolemy.	17 El árabe Zabdiel cortó la cabeza a Alejandro y se la envió a Tolomeo.
18 Three days later King Ptolemy died, and the Egyptian garrisons in the strongholds were kil ed by thelocal inhabitants.	18 Pero tres días después murió el rey Tolomeo y los que estaban en sus plazas fuertes perecieron a manos de los que las habitaban.
19 So Demetrius became king in the year 167.	19 Demetrio comenzó a reinar el año 167.
20 At the same time, Jonathan mustered the men of Judaea for an assault on the Citadel of Jerusalem,and they set up numerous siege-engines against it.	20 Por aquellos días juntó Jonatán a los de Judea para atacar la Ciudadela de Jerusalén y levantó contra ella muchos ingenios de guerra.
21 But some renegades who hated their nation made their way to the king and told him that Jonathanwas besieging the Citadel.	21 Entonces algunos rebeldes que odiaban a su nación acudieron al rey a anunciarle que Jonatán tenía puesto cerco a la Ciudadela.
22 The king was angered by the news. No sooner had he been informed than he set out and came toPtolemais. He wrote to Jonathan, tel ing him to raise the siege and to meet him for a conference in Ptolemais assoon as possible.	22 La noticia le irritó, y nada más oírla, se puso en marcha y vino a Tolemaida. Escribió a Jonatán que cesara en el cerco y que viniera a verle lo antes posible a Tolemaida para entrevistarse con él.
23 When Jonathan heard this, he gave orders for the siege to continue; he then selected a deputationfrom the elders of Israel and the priests, and took the deliberate risk	23 Al enterarse, ordenó Jonatán que se siguiese el cerco, eligió ancianos de Israel y sacerdotes y se expuso a sí mismo al peligro.
24 of himself taking silver and gold, clothing and numerous other presents, and going to Ptolemais toface the king, whose favour he succeeded in winning;	24 Tomando plata, oro, vestidos y otros presentes en gran cantidad, partió a verse con el rey en Tolemaida y halló gracia ante él.
25 and although one or two renegades of his nation brought charges against him,	25 Algunos sin ley de la nación le acusaron,
26 the king treated him as his predecessors had treated him, and promoted him in the presence of alhis friends.	26 pero el rey le trató como le habían tratado sus predecesores y le honró en presencia de todos sus amigos.

28 Jonathan asked the king to exempt Judaea and the three Samaritan districts from taxation,promising him three hundred talents in return.	28 Jonatán pidió al rey que dejara libres de impuesto a Judea y a los tres distritos de Samaría, a cambio de trescientos talentos que le prometía.
29 The king consented, and wrote Jonathan a rescript covering the whole matter, in these terms:	29 Accedió el rey y escribió a Jonatán una carta sobre todos estos puntos redactada de la forma siguiente:
30 'King Demetrius to Jonathan his brother, and to the Jewish nation, greetings.	30 «El rey Demetrio saluda a su hermano Jonatán y a la nación de los judíos.
31 'We have written to Lasthenes our cousin concerning you, and now send you this copy of ourrescript for your own information:	31 Os escribimos también a vosotros una copia de la carta que sobre vosotros hemos escrito a nuestro pariente Lástenes para que la conozcáis:
32 "King Demetrius to his father Lasthenes, greetings.	32 El rey Demetrio saluda a su padre Lástenes.
33 "The nation of the Jews is our al y; they fulfil their obligations to us, and in view of their goodwilltowards us we have decided to show them our bounty.	33 Por sus buenas disposiciones hacia nosotros hemos decidido conceder favores a la nación de los judíos, que son amigos nuestros y observan lo que es justo con nosotros.
34 We confirm them in their possession of the territory of Judaea and the three districts of Aphairema,Lydda and Ramathaim; these were annexed to Judaea from Samaritan territory, with al their dependencies, infavour of al who offer sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the royal dues which the king formerly received fromthem every year, from the yield of the soil and the fruit crops.	34 Les confirmamos la posesión del territorio de Judea y de los tres distritos de Aferema, Lidda y Ramatáyim que han sido desprendidos de Galilea y agregados a Judea con todas sus dependencias en favor de los que sacrifican en Jerusalén, a cambio de los derechos reales que el rey percibía de ellos antes cada año por los productos de la tierra y el fruto de los árboles.
35 As regards our other rights over the tithes and taxes due to us, over the salt marshes, and the crowntaxes due to us, as from today we release them from them al .	35 En cuanto a los otros derechos que tenemos sobre los diezmos y tributos nuestros, sobre las salinas y coronas que se nos deben, les concedemos desde ahora una exención total.
36 None of these grants will be revoked henceforth or anywhere.	36 No será derogada ni una de estas concesiones a partir de ahora en ningún tiempo.
37 You wil make yourself responsible for having a copy of this made, to be given to Jonathan anddisplayed on the holy mountain in a conspicuous place." '	37 Procurad hacer una copia de estas disposiciones que le sea entregada a Jonatán para ponerla en el monte santo en lugar visible».
38 When King Demetrius saw that the country was at peace under his rule and that no resistance wasoffered him, he dismissed his forces, and sent al the men home, except for the foreign troops that he hadrecruited in the foreign island, thus incurring the enmity of the veterans who had served his ancestors.	38 El rey Demetrio, viendo que el país estaba en calma bajo su mando y que nada le ofrecía resistencia, licenció todas sus tropas mandando a cada uno a su lugar, excepto las tropas extranjeras que había reclutado en las islas de las naciones. Todas las tropas que había recibido de sus padres se enemistaron con él.
39 Now Trypho, one of Alexander's former supporters, noting that al the troops were muttering againstDemetrius, went to see Iamleku, the Arab who was bringing up Antiochus, Alexander's young son,	39 Entonces Trifón, antiguo partidario de Alejandro, al ver que todas las tropas murmuraban contra Demetrio, se fue donde el árabe Yamlikú que criaba al niño Antíoco, hijo de Alejandro,
40 and repeatedly urged him to let him have the boy, so that he might succeed his father as king; hetold him of Demetrius' decision and of the resentment it had aroused among his troops. He spent a long timethere.	40 y le instaba a que se lo entregase para ponerlo en el trono de su padre. Le puso al corriente de toda la actuación de Demetrio y del odio que le tenían sus tropas. Permaneció allí muchos días.
41 Jonathan, meanwhile, sent to ask King Demetrius to withdraw the garrisons from the Citadel inJerusalem and from the other fortresses, since they were constantly fighting Israel.	41 Entre tanto envió Jonatán a pedir al rey Demetrio que retirara las guarniciones de la Ciudadela de Jerusalén y de las plazas fuertes porque hostilizaban a Israel.
42 Demetrius sent word back to Jonathan, 'Not only wil I do this for you and for your nation, but I shalheap honours on you and your nation if I find a favourable opportunity.	42 Demetrio envió a decir a Jonatán: «No sólo haré esto por ti y por tu nación, sino que os colmaré de honores a ti y a tu nación cuando tenga oportunidad.
43 For the present, you would do wel to send me reinforcements, since al my troops have deserted.'	43 Pero ahora harás bien en enviarme hombres en mi auxilio, pues todas mis tropas me han abandonado».
44 Jonathan sent three thousand experienced soldiers to him in Antioch; when they reached the king,he was delighted at their arrival.	44 Jonatán le envió a Antioquía 3.000 guerreros valientes, y cuando llegaron, el rey experimentó gran satisfacción con su venida.
45 The citizens crowded together in the centre of the city, to the number of some hundred and twentythousand, intending to kil the king.	45 Se amotinaron en el centro de la ciudad los ciudadanos, al pie de 120.000, y querían matar al rey.
46 The king took refuge in the palace, while the citizens occupied the thoroughfares of the city andbegan to attack.	46 El se refugió en el palacio, y los ciudadanos ocuparon las calles de la ciudad y comenzaron el ataque.
47 The king then cal ed on the Jews for help; and these al ral ied round him, then fanned out throughthe city, and that day kil ed about a hundred thousand of its inhabitants.	47 El rey llamó entonces en su auxilio a los judíos, que se juntaron todos en torno a él y luego se diseminaron por la ciudad. Aquel día llegaron a matar hasta 100.000.
48 They fired the city, seizing a great deal of plunder at the same time, and secured the king's safety.	48 Prendieron fuego a la ciudad, se hicieron ese mismo día con un botín considerable y salvaron al rey.
49 When the citizens saw that the Jews had the city at their mercy, their courage failed them, and theymade an abject appeal to the king,	49 Cuando los de la ciudad vieron que los judíos dominaban la ciudad a su talante, perdieron el ánimo y levantaron sus clamores al rey suplicándole:
50 'Give us the right hand of peace, and let the Jews stop their fight against us and the city.'	50 «Danos la mano y cesen los judíos en sus ataques contra nosotros y contra la ciudad».
51 They threw down their arms and made peace. The Jews were covered in glory, in the eyes of theking and of everyone else in his kingdom. Having won renown in his kingdom, they returned to Jerusalem ladenwith booty.	51 Depusieron las armas e hicieron la paz. Los judíos alcanzaron gran gloria ante el rey y ante todos los de su reino y se volvieron a Jerusalén con un rico botín.
52 Thus, King Demetrius sat al the more securely on his royal throne, and the country was quiet underhis government.	52 El rey Demetrio se sentó en el trono de su reino y la tierra quedó sosegada en su presencia.
53 But he gave the lie to all the promises he had made, and changed his attitude to Jonathan, givingnothing in return for the services Jonathan had rendered him, but thwarting him at every turn.	53 Pero faltó a todas sus promesas y se indispuso con Jonatán. Lejos de corresponder a los servicios que le había prestado, le causaba graves molestias.
54 After this, Trypho came back with the little boy Antiochus, who became king and was crowned.	54 Depués de estos acontecimientos, volvió Trifón y con él Antíoco, niño todavía, que se proclamó rey y se ciñó la diadema.
55 Al the troops that Demetrius had summarily dismissed rallied to Antiochus, and made war onDemetrius, who turned tail and fled.	55 Todas las tropas que Demetrio había licenciado se unieron a él y salieron a luchar contra Demetrio, le derrotaron y le pusieron en fuga.
56 Trypho captured the elephants and seized Antioch.	56 Trifón tomó los elefantes y se apoderó de Antioquía.
57 Young Antiochus then wrote as fol ows to Jonathan: 'I confirm you in the high-priesthood and set youover the four districts and appoint you one of the Friends of the King.'	57 El joven Antíoco escribió a Jonatán diciéndole: «Te confirmo en el sumo sacerdocio, te pongo al frente de los cuatro distritos y quiero que te cuentes entre los amigos del rey».
58 He sent him a service of gold plate, and granted him the right to drink from gold vessels, and to wearthe purple and the golden brooch.	58 Le envió copas de oro y un servicio de mesa, y le concedió autorización de beber en copas de oro, vestir púrpura y llevar fíbula de oro.
59 He appointed his brother Simon commander-in-chief of the region from the Ladder of Tyre to thefrontiers of Egypt.	59 A su hermano Simón le nombró estratega desde la Escalera de Tiro hasta la frontera de Egipto.
60 Jonathan then set out and made a progress through Transeuphrates and its towns, and the entireSyrian army rallied to his support. He came to Ascalon and was received in state by the inhabitants.	60 Jonatán salió a recorrer la Transeufratina y sus ciudades, y todas las tropas de Siria se le unieron como aliadas. Llegó a Ascalón y los habitantes de la ciudad le salieron a recibir con muchos honores.
61 From there he proceeded to Gaza, but the people of Gaza shut him out, so he laid siege to it,burning down its suburbs and plundering them.	61 De allí pasó a Gaza donde los habitantes le cerraron las puertas. Entonces la sitió y entregó sus arrabales a las llamas y al pillaje.
62 The people of Gaza then pleaded with Jonathan, and he made peace with them; but he took thesons of their chief men as hostages and sent them away to Jerusalem. He then travel ed through the country asfar as Damascus.	62 Los de las ciudad vinieron a suplicarle y Jonatán les dio la mano, pero tomó como rehenes a los hijos de los jefes y los envió a Jerusalén. A continuación, siguió recorriendo la región hasta Damasco.
63 Jonathan now learned that Demetrius' generals had arrived at Kadesh in Galilee with a large army,intending to remove him from office,	63 Jonatán se enteró de que los generales de Demetrio se habían presentado en Kedes de Galilea con un ejército numeroso para apartarle de su cargo.
64 and went to engage them, leaving his brother Simon inside the country.	64 Entonces dejó en el país a su hermano Simón y salió a su encuentro.
65 Simon laid siege to Beth-Zur, attacking it day after day, and blockading the inhabitants	65 Simón acampó frente a Bet Sur, la atacó durante muchos días y la bloqueó.
66 til they sued for peace, which he granted them, though he expel ed them from the town andoccupied it, stationing a garrison there.	66 Le pidieron que les diese la mano y él se la dio. Les hizo salir de allí, ocupó la ciudad y puso en ella una guarnición.
67 Jonathan and his army, meanwhile, having pitched camp by the Lake of Gennesar, rose early, andby morning were already in the plain of Hazor.	67 Por su parte, Jonatán y su ejército acamparon junto a las aguas de Gennesar, y muy de madrugada partieron para la llanura de Asor
68 The foreigners' army advanced to fight them on the plain, having first positioned an ambush for himin the mountains. While the main body was advancing directly towards the Jews,	68 donde el ejército extranjero les vino al encuentro en la llanura después de dejar hombres emboscados en los montes. Mientras este ejército se presentaba de frente,
69 the troops in ambush broke cover and attacked first.	69 surgieron de sus puestos los emboscados y entablaron combate.
70 Al the men with Jonathan fled; no one was left, except Mattathias son of Absalom and Judas son ofChalphi, the generals of his army.	70 Todos los hombres de Jonatán se dieron a la fuga sin que quedara ni uno de ellos, a excepción de Matatías, hijo de Absalón, y de Judas, hijo de Kalfi, capitanes del ejército.
71 At this, Jonathan tore his garments, put dust on his head, and prayed.	71 Jonatán entonces rasgó sus vestidos, echó polvo sobre su cabeza y oró.
72 Then he returned to the fight and routed the enemy, who fled.	72 Vuelto al combate, derrotó al enemigo y le puso en fuga.
73 When the fugitives from his own forces saw this, they came back to him and joined in the pursuit asfar as Kadesh where the enemy encampment was, and there they themselves pitched camp.	73 Al verlo, sus hombres que huían volvieron a él y con él persiguieron al enemigo hasta su campamento en Kedes y acamparon allí.
74 About three thousand of the foreign troops fel that day. Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem.	74 Cayeron aquel día del ejército extranjero hasta 3.000 hombres. Jonatán regresó a Jerusalén.
