1 It grew late and his staff hurried away. Bagoas closed the tent from the outside, having shown outthose who stil lingered in his lord's presence. They went to their beds wearied with too much drinking,	1 Venuta la sera, i servi d'Oloferne si affrettarono a rientrare nelle loro tende, e Vagao, chiuse le porte della camera, se ne andò.
2 and Judith was left alone in the tent with Holofernes who had col apsed wine-sodden on his bed.	2 Eran tutti acciucchiti dal vino,
3 Judith then told her maid to stay just outside the bedroom and wait for her to come out, as she didevery morning. She had let it be understood she would be going out to her prayers and had also spoken of herintention to Bagoas.	3 e Giuditta restò sola nella camera,
4 By now everyone had left Holofernes, and no one, either important or unimportant, was left in thebedroom. Standing beside the bed, Judith murmured to herself: Lord God, to whom al strength belongs, prosperwhat my hands are now to do for the greater glory of Jerusalem;	4 con Oloferne che stava disteso sul letto, oppresso dal sonno causato dall'eccessiva ubriachezza.
5 now is the time to recover your heritage and to further my plans to crush the enemies arrayed againstus.	5 Giuditta, detto alla serva che stesse fuori dinanzi alla camera a spiare,
6 With that she went up to the bedpost by Holofernes' head and took down his scimitar;	6 si pose dinanzi al letto a pregare con lacrime, e movendo soltanto le labbra,
7 coming closer to the bed she caught him by the hair and said, 'Make me strong today, Lord God ofIsrael!'	7 disse: « Signore Dio d'Israele, dammi forza, e getta in questo momento uno sguardo sull'opera delle mie mani, affinchè, come hai promesso, tu sollevi Gerusalemme, la tua città, ed io compia ciò che ho creduto possibile col tuo aiuto ».
8 Twice she struck at his neck with all her might, and cut off his head.	8 Detto questo, si accostò alla colonna che era a capo del suo letto, e, staccatane la spada che vi era legata e sospesa,
9 She then rol ed his body off the bed and pulled down the canopy from the bedposts. After which, shewent out and gave the head of Holofernes to her maid	9 la sguainò, prese la chioma della testa d'Oloferne, e, detto: « Signore, dammi forza in questo momento »,
10 who put it in her food bag. The two then left the camp together, as they always did when they went topray. Once they were out of the camp, they skirted the ravine, climbed the slope to Bethulia and made for thegates.	10 lo colpì due volte sul collo e gli troncò la testa. Staccato dalla colonna il conopeo, gettato per terra il troncone decapitato,
11 From a distance, Judith shouted to the guards on the gates, 'Open the gate! Open! For the Lord ourGod is with us stil , displaying his strength in Israel and his might against our enemies, as he has done today!'	11 uscì quasi subito, consegnò alla serva il capo d'Oloferne, e le ordinò di metterlo nella bisaccia.
12 Hearing her voice, the townsmen hurried down to the town gate and summoned the elders.	12 Poi tutt'e due uscirono, secondo il solito come per andar a pregare, e, traversato il campo e fatto il giro della valle, giunsero alla porta della città.
13 Everyone, great and smal , came running down, since her arrival was unexpected. They threw thegate open, welcomed the women, lit a fire to see by and crowded round them.	13 Giuditta gridò da lungi alle guardie delle mura: « Aprite la porta, perchè il Signore è con noi ed ha fatto un miracolo in Israele ».
14 Then Judith raised her voice and said, 'Praise God! Praise him! Praise the God who has notwithdrawn his mercy from the House of Israel, but has shattered our enemies by my hand tonight!'	14 Le guardie, sentita la voce di lei, chiamarono gli anziani della città.
15 She pul ed the head out of the bag and held it for them to see. 'This is the head of Holofernes,general-in-chief of the Assyrian army; here is the canopy under which he lay drunk! The Lord has struck himdown by the hand of a woman!	15 Tutti dal più piccolo al più grande accorsero a vederla, perchè credevano che non tornasse più.
16 Glory to the Lord who has protected me in the course I took! My face seduced him, only to his ownundoing; he committed no sin with me to shame me or disgrace me.'	16 Accesi dei lumi, le si strinsero tutt'intorno, ed essa, montata su un luogo elevato, ordinò che si facesse silenzio. Ottenuto un silenzio generale,
17 Overcome with emotion, the people al prostrated themselves and worshipped God, exclaiming withone voice, 'Blessings on you, our God, for confounding your people's enemies today!'	17 Giuditta disse: « Lodate il Signore Dio nostro, il quale non ha abbandonato coloro che hanno sperato in lui,
18 Uzziah then said to Judith: May you be blessed, my daughter, by God Most High, beyond al womenon earth; and blessed be the Lord God, Creator of heaven and earth, who guided you to cut off the head of theleader of our enemies!	18 e, per mezzo di me sua serva, ha compiuta la sua misericordia, da lui promessa alla casa d'Israele, e in questa notte, colla mia mano, ha ucciso il nemico del suo popolo ».
19 The trust which you have shown wil not pass from human hearts, as they commemorate the power ofGod for evermore.	19 Allora, tratto fuori dalla bisaccia il capo d'Oloferne, lo mostrò loro dicendo: « Ecco la testa d'Oloferne, principe dell'esercito assiro, ed ecco il suo conopeo, dentro il quale egli giaceva nella sua ubriachezza, dove, per mano d'una donna, il Signore nostro l'ha colpito.
20 God grant you may be always held in honour and rewarded with blessings, since you did not consideryour own life when our nation was brought to its knees, but warded off our ruin, walking in the right path beforeour God. And the people al said, 'Amen! Amen!'	20 Or io giuro pel Signore che il suo angelo m'ha custodita nell'andare e nello star là e nel tornare; il Signore non ha permesso che io sua serva fossi contaminata; egli m'ha resa a voi senza macchia di peccato, lieta della sua vittoria, del mio scampo e della vostra liberazione.
	21 Voi tutti cantatene le glorie, perchè egli è buono e la sua misericordia è eterna ».
	22 Allora tutti adorarono il Signore e dissero a lei: « Il Signore t'ha benedetta nella sua potenza, e per mezzo di te ha annientati i nostri nemici ».
	23 0zia, principe del popolo, le disse: « O figlia, tu sei benedetta dal Signore Dio altissimo a preferenza di tutte le altre donne della terra.
	24 Benedetto sia il Signore, creatore del cielo e della terra, che diresse la tua mano nel troncar la testa del principe dei nostri nemici.
	25 Oggi egli ha così esaltato il tuo nome che le tue lodi saran sempre sulla bocca degli uomini, i quali si ricorderanno in eterno della potenza del Signore, perchè per essi tu non hai risparmiata la tua vita, e viste le angustie e tribolazioni della tua gente, ne hai impedita la rovina davanti al nostro Dio ».
	26 E tutto il popolo disse: « Così sia, così sia ».
	27 Fu poi chiamato Achior, e venuto che fu Giuditta gli disse: « Il Dio d'Israele, a cui tu rendesti testimonianza, che si vendica dei suoi nemici, egli, in questa notte, per la mia mano ha troncata la testa di tutti gl'increduli.
	28 E per farti persuaso della cosa, ecco il capo d'Oloferne, di colui che, nel disprezzo della sua superbia, vilipese il Dio d'Israele e ti minacciò la morte, dicendo: Quando sarà preso il popolo d'Israele, io farò trapassare i tuoi fianchi colla spada ».
	29 Achior, veduta la testa d'Oloferne, fu preso da spavento, e cadde bocconi per terra, svenuto.
	30 Appena ripresi i sentimenti e tornato in sè, si gettò ai piedi di lei, l'adorò e disse:
	31 « Benedetta tu dal tuo Dio in tutte le tende di Giacobbe, perchè in te, presso tutte le nazioni che udiranno il tuo nome, sarà glorificato il Dio d'Israele ».
