1 It grew late and his staff hurried away. Bagoas closed the tent from the outside, having shown outthose who stil lingered in his lord's presence. They went to their beds wearied with too much drinking,	1 Or, venuta la sera se ne andarono in fretta i suoi servi al loro albergo; e Vagao chiuse le porte della camera, e se n’andò.
2 and Judith was left alone in the tent with Holofernes who had col apsed wine-sodden on his bed.	2 E tutti erano oppressi dal vino.
3 Judith then told her maid to stay just outside the bedroom and wait for her to come out, as she didevery morning. She had let it be understood she would be going out to her prayers and had also spoken of herintention to Bagoas.	3 E Giuditta rimase sola nella camera.
4 By now everyone had left Holofernes, and no one, either important or unimportant, was left in thebedroom. Standing beside the bed, Judith murmured to herself: Lord God, to whom al strength belongs, prosperwhat my hands are now to do for the greater glory of Jerusalem;	4 E Oloferne era sdraiato nel letto, e pieno di sonno pel troppo vino,
5 now is the time to recover your heritage and to further my plans to crush the enemies arrayed againstus.	5 E Giuditta ordinò alla serva, che stesse fuori dinanzi alla camera in attenzione.
6 With that she went up to the bedpost by Holofernes' head and took down his scimitar;	6 Ma Giuditta si pose dinanzi al letto pregando con lacrime, e col quieto movimento delle labbra,
7 coming closer to the bed she caught him by the hair and said, 'Make me strong today, Lord God ofIsrael!'	7 Dicendo: Dammi coraggio, o Signore Dio d'Israele, e favorisci in questo punto la mia impresa, affinchè secondo la tua promessa sia rimessa da te nel suo stato la tua città, Gerusalemme, e sia condotto da me a fine il disegno, che io concepii credendo, che poteva col tuo aiuto eseguirsi.
8 Twice she struck at his neck with all her might, and cut off his head.	8 E detto questo si accostò alla colonna, che era a capo del letto di lui, e ne stacco il pugnale, che ivi stava attaccato.
9 She then rol ed his body off the bed and pulled down the canopy from the bedposts. After which, shewent out and gave the head of Holofernes to her maid	9 E sguainatolo, prese la chioma della sua testa, e disse: Signore, dammi caraggio in tal punto.
10 who put it in her food bag. The two then left the camp together, as they always did when they went topray. Once they were out of the camp, they skirted the ravine, climbed the slope to Bethulia and made for thegates.	10 E due colpi gli diede sul collo, e troncò la sua testa, e tolse dalle colonne il cortinaggio di lui, e svolgendo (ne spinse in terra) il corpo tronco.
11 From a distance, Judith shouted to the guards on the gates, 'Open the gate! Open! For the Lord ourGod is with us stil , displaying his strength in Israel and his might against our enemies, as he has done today!'	11 E indi a poco uscì fuori, e diede alla serva il capo di Oloferne, e le ordinò di metterlo nella sua sacca.
12 Hearing her voice, the townsmen hurried down to the town gate and summoned the elders.	12 E ambedue uscirono secondo il solito, come per andar ad orare, e passati gli alloggiamenti, e fatto il giro della valle, giunsero alla porta della città.
13 Everyone, great and smal , came running down, since her arrival was unexpected. They threw thegate open, welcomed the women, lit a fire to see by and crowded round them.	13 E Giuditta disse da lungi alle sentinelle delle mura: Aprite la porta, perocchè il Signore è con noi, e ha fatto cosa mirabile in Israele.
14 Then Judith raised her voice and said, 'Praise God! Praise him! Praise the God who has notwithdrawn his mercy from the House of Israel, but has shattered our enemies by my hand tonight!'	14 Or quelli, riconosciuta la voce di lei, chiamarono i seniori della città:
15 She pul ed the head out of the bag and held it for them to see. 'This is the head of Holofernes,general-in-chief of the Assyrian army; here is the canopy under which he lay drunk! The Lord has struck himdown by the hand of a woman!	15 E corsero a lei tutti i piccoli, e i grandi perchè già più non speravano, che ella tornasse.
16 Glory to the Lord who has protected me in the course I took! My face seduced him, only to his ownundoing; he committed no sin with me to shame me or disgrace me.'	16 E accesi de lumi, se le affollarono tutti dintorno; ed ella salita in luogo più elevato, ordinò, che facesser silenzio, e quando tutti furono cheti,
17 Overcome with emotion, the people al prostrated themselves and worshipped God, exclaiming withone voice, 'Blessings on you, our God, for confounding your people's enemies today!'	17 Disse Giuditta: Date lode al Signore Dio nostro, il quale non ha abbandonati coloro, che in lui hanno sperato.
18 Uzziah then said to Judith: May you be blessed, my daughter, by God Most High, beyond al womenon earth; and blessed be the Lord God, Creator of heaven and earth, who guided you to cut off the head of theleader of our enemies!	18 E per me sua serva ha dato saggio di quella misericordia, che egli promise alla casa d'Israele; e per le mie mani ha ucciso in questa notte il nimico del popol suo.
19 The trust which you have shown wil not pass from human hearts, as they commemorate the power ofGod for evermore.	19 E tratto fuora dalla bisaccia il capo di Oloferne, lo mostrò ad essi, dicendo: Ecco la testa di Oloferne comandante delle schiere degli Assiri, ed ecco il suo cortinaggio, dentro del quale egli giaceva ubbriaco, dove per man di una donna lo ha percosso il Signore Dio nostro.
20 God grant you may be always held in honour and rewarded with blessings, since you did not consideryour own life when our nation was brought to its knees, but warded off our ruin, walking in the right path beforeour God. And the people al said, 'Amen! Amen!'	20 Or io giuro pel Signore, che l'Angelo di lui mi ha custodita e nell'andare, e nello stare, e nel ritornare in quà, e non ha permesso il Signore, che io sua serva fossi disonorata, ma senza macchia di peccato mi ha renduta a voi lieta di sua vittoria, e del mio scampo, e della vostra liberazione.
	21 Date tutti lode a lui, perchè egli è buono, e la sua misericordia è eterna.
	22 Allora tutti unitamente adorando il Signore le dissero: Il Signore ti ha benedetta comunicandoti la sua possanza, e ha per mezzo di te annichilati i nostri nemici.
	23 E Ozìa capo del popolo d'Israele, le disse: Benedetta se tu, o figliuola, dal Signore Dio altissimo sopra tutte le donne della terra.
	24 Benedetto il Signore, che creò il cielo e la terra, il quale resse la tua mano per troncare la testa del principale nostro nemico:
	25 Perocchè egli questo dì ha talmente esaltato il tuo nome, che le tue lodi saranno mai sempre nelle bocche degli uomini, che si ricorderanno ne' secoli appresso de prodigi del Signore per amore di questi uomini tu non hai temuto esporre la tua vita mirando le angustie, e la tribolazione della tua gente, ma nel cospetto del nostro Dio ti sei opposta a questa ruina.
	26 E tutto il popolo disse: Così è, così è.
	27 E Achior essendo chiamato accorse, e Giuditta gli disse: Il Dio d'Israele, di cui tu affermasti, ch'ei fa far vendetta dei suoi nemici, egli stesso ha decollato per le mie mani questa notte il capo di tutti gl'increduli.
	28 E perchè tu conosca, che la cosa è com'io dico, ecco il capo di Oloferne, il quale con superbo disprezzo vilipese il Dio d'Israele, e a te minacciò la morte dicendo: Quando il popolo d'Israele sarà fatto prigioniero, io ordinerò, che sieno trapassati colla spada i tuoi fianchi.
	29 E Achior veggendo la testa di Oloferne, tutto sbigottito cadde boccone per terra, e perdè i sentimenti.
	30 Ma quando tornò in se, ripreso lo spirito, si gettò a piedi di lei, e l'adorò, e disse:
	31 Benedetta tu dal tuo Dio in tutti i tabernacoli di Giacobbe: perocchè presso tutte le nazioni, che sentiranno rammentare il tuo nome sarà in te glorificato il Dio d'Israello.
