1 Satan took his stand against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.	1 Levantou-se, pois, Satanás contra Israel, e incitou Davide a fazer o recenseamento de Israel.
2 David said to Joab and the people's princes, 'Go, and take a census of Israel, from Beersheba to Dan,then bring it back to me and let me know the total.'	2 Davide disse a Joab e aos principais do povo: Ide, contai Israel desde Bersabé até Dan, e trazei-me o número, para eu o saber.
3 Joab replied, 'May Yahweh multiply his people to a hundred times what they are today! But my lordking, are they not all my lord's servants in any case? Why should my lord insist on this? Why should he involveIsrael in guilt?'	3 Joab respondeu: O Senhor multiplique o seu povo cem vezes mais do que ele é. Porventura, ó rei, meu senhor, não são todos servos teus? Por que procura o meu senhor fazer uma coisa que será imputada como pecado a Israel?
4 But the king enforced his order on Joab, and Joab set out, travelled throughout al Israel, and thenreturned to Jerusalem.	4 Contudo preveleceu a ordem do rei. Joab partiu, andou girando por todo o Israel e voltou para Jerusalém.
5 Joab gave David the census results for the people: al Israel had eleven hundred thousand men whocould wield a sword; Judah had four hundred and seventy thousand men who could wield a sword.	5 Deu a Davide a lista daqueles que tinha recenseado: o número total de Israel era de um milhão e cem mil homens capazes de tomar armas; o de Judá era de quatrocentos e setenta mil homens de guerra.
6 Joab had found the king's command so distasteful that he did not include Levi and Benjamin.	6 Joab não contou os da tribo de Levi, nem os da tribo de Benjamim, porque lhe repugnava a ordem do rei.
7 God looked with displeasure on this and punished Israel in consequence.	7 Esta ordem desagradou a Deus, o qual feriu Israel.
8 David then said to God, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now I beg you to forgive yourservant for this fault, for I have acted very foolishly.'	8 Davide disse a Deus: Eu cometi um grande pecado em fazer isto, peço-te que perdoes a culpa ao teu servo, porque procedi nèsciamente.
9 Yahweh then spoke to Gad, David's seer,	9 O Senhor falou a Gad, vidente de Davide, dizendo:
10 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '	10 Vai, fala a Davide e dize-lhe: Eis o que diz o Senhor: Eu te dou três coisas à escolha; escolhe uma qual quiseres, e eu ta farei.
11 So Gad went to David and said, 'Yahweh says this,	11 Tendo ido Gad à presença de Davide, disse-lhe: Eis o que diz o Senhor: Escolhe o que quiseres:
12 "Take your choice between three years of famine; or three months of disaster at the hands of yourenemies, with your enemies' sword overtaking you; or three days of Yahweh's sword, an epidemic in the country,while the angel of Yahweh wreaks havoc throughout the territory of Israel." Now decide how I am to answer himwho sends me.'	12 ou sofrer a fome durante três anos, ou fugir diante dos teus inimigos durante três meses, sem poderes escapar da sua espada, ou estar debaixo da espada do Senhor durante três dias, grassando a peste pelo país, e fazendo estragos o anjo do Senhor em todas as terras de Israel. Vê, pois, agora que hei-de responder a quem me enviou.
13 David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive. Better for me to fal into Yahweh's hand, since hismercies are very great, than for me to fal into the hands of human enemies.'	13 Davide respondeu a Gad: De toda a parte me vejo em grandes angústias, mas para mim é melhor cair nas mãos do Senhor, porque é de muita misericórdia, do que cair nas mãos dos homens.
14 So Yahweh unleashed an epidemic on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelites succumbed.	14 Mandou, pois o Senhor a peste a Israel, e morreram de Israel setenta mil homens.
15 Next, God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, Yahwehlooked down and felt sorry about the calamity; and he said to the destroying angel, 'Enough now! Hold yourhand!' The angel of Yahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.	15 Mandou também um anjo a Jerusalém, para a assolar; porém quando estava a ser assolada, o Senhor olhou e compadeceu-se dum mal tão grande, e mandou ao anjo exterminador: Basta, retira já a tua mão. O anjo do Senhor estava perto da eira de Ornan Jebuseu.
16 David, raising his eyes, saw the angel of Yahweh standing between earth and heaven, a drawnsword in his hand stretched out towards Jerusalem. David and the elders then put on sackcloth and fel on theirfaces,	16 Davide, levantando os olhos, viu o anjo do Senhor, que estava entre o céu e a terra, com um a espada desembainhada na sua mão, voltada contra Jerusalém; (à sua vista), tanto ele como os seus anciães, cobertos de cilícios, prostraram-se com os rostos por terra.
17 and David said to God, 'Did I not order the people to be counted? I was the one who sinned andactual y committed the wrong. But these, the flock, what have they done? Yahweh my God, let your hand lieheavy on me and on my family; but spare your people from the plague!'	17 Davide disse a Deus: Porventura não sou eu quem mandou fazer o recenseamento do povo? Fui eu que pequei, eu o que fiz o mal; mas este rebanho, que mereceu ele? Volte-se, pois, te peço, Senhor meu Deus, a tua mão contra mim e contra a casa de meu pai, mas que o teu povo não seja castigado.
18 The angel of Yahweh then ordered Gad to tel David that David should go up and erect an altar toYahweh on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.	18 O anjo do Senhor mandou a Gad que dissesse a Davide que fosse e que levantasse um altar ao Senhor Deus na eira de Ornan Jebuseu.
19 So, at Gad's bidding, given in Yahweh's name, David went up.	19 Foi, pois, Davide, conforme a ordem que Gad lhe tinha intimado da parte do Senhor.
20 Ornan had turned round and seen the angel, and he and his four sons with him had hidden.	20 Ornan e quatro filhos seus, que com ele estavam, tendo levantado os olhos e visto o anjo, esconderam-se; naquela ocasião estavam debulhando trigo na eira.
21 When David arrived Ornan was threshing wheat. He looked up and saw David and came off thethreshing-floor and prostrated himself on the ground at David's feet.	21 Quando Davide se dirigia para Ornan, viu-o Ornan, e, saindo da sua eira ao seu encontro, fez-lhe uma profunda reverência, prostrando-se por terra.
22 David then said to Ornan, 'Let me have the site of the threshing-floor, so that I can build an altar toYahweh on it; let me have it at the ful price -- so that the plague may be lifted from the people.' Ornan said toDavid,	22 Davide disse-lhe: cede-me o sítio da tua eira, para eu edificar nele um altar ao Senhor; cede-me pelo dinheiro que valer para que cesse a praga de cima do povo.
23 'Take it, and let my lord the king do what he thinks fit. Look, I shal give you the oxen for burntofferings, the threshing-sleds for the wood and the wheat for the oblation. I shal give everything.'	23 Ornan respondeu a Davide: Toma-a, e o rei senhor faça dela o que for do seu agrado; eu darei também os bois para o holocausto, os trilhos para lenha, e trigo para o sacrifício; darei tudo de boa vontade.
24 'No,' said King David to Ornan, 'I insist on buying it at the ful price. I wil not offer Yahweh whatbelongs to you or bring burnt offerings which have cost me nothing.'	24 O rei Davide disse-lhe: Não se fará assim, mas eu te hei-de dar o dinheiro que ela vale, porque eu não devo tirar-te o que é teu, e oferecer assim ao Senhor holocaustos que não me custam nada.
25 So David gave Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the site.	25 Deu, pois, Davide a Ornan, pelo terreno, seiscentos siclos de ouro de justo peso.
26 There David built an altar to Yahweh and brought burnt offerings and peace offerings. He called onYahweh, and Yahweh answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.	26 Levantou ali um altar ao Senhor, ofereceu holocaustos e hóstias pacíficas e invocou o Senhor, e ele o ouviu, mandando do céu fogo sobre o altar do holocausto.
27 Then Yahweh ordered the angel to sheathe his sword.	27 Então o Senhor mandou ao anjo, e ele meteu a sua espada na bainha.
28 Whereupon, seeing that Yahweh had answered him on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite,David offered sacrifice there.	28 Imediatamente Davide, vendo que o Senhor o tinha ouvido na eira de Ornan Jebuseu, imolou ali vítimas.
29 The Dwel ing which Moses had made in the desert and the altar of burnt offering were at that time onthe high place at Gibeon,	29 O tabernáculo do Senhor, que Moisés tinha feito no deserto, e o altar dos holocaustos, estavam então no alto de Gabaon.
30 but David could not go there to consult God because he was terrified of the angel's sword.	30 Davide não teve força para ir até ao altar, para ali fazer oração a Deus, porque tinha ficado em extremo aterrado de espanto, ao ver a espada do anjo do Senhor.
