1 Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his whole army -- thirty-two kings were with him, and horses andchariots -- and marched on Samaria, to besiege it and take it by assault.	1 Benadad re della Siria, radunato tutto il suo esercito, con trentadue re e cavalli e carri, salì a combattere contro Samaria a cui pose l'assedio.
2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel to tel him, 'Ben-Hadad says this,	2 Mandò poi dei messi in città, a dire ad Acab:
3 "Your silver and gold are mine. Your wives and children remain yours." '	3 « Queste cose dice Benadad: Il tuo argento e il tuo oro è mio, le tue mogli e i tuoi figli più belli son miei ».
4 The king of Israel replied, 'As you command, my lord king. Myself and al I have are yours.'	4 Il re d'Israele rispose: « E' proprio come tu dici, o re mio signore; io con tutte le mie cose sono tuo ».
5 The messengers came again, this time they said, 'Ben-Hadad says this, "I have already sent you anorder to hand over your silver and your gold, your wives and your children;	5 I messi tornarono a dire: « Queste cose dice Benadad che ci ha mandati a te: Tu mi darai il tuo argento, il tuo oro, le tue mogli e i tuoi figli.
6 but I swear, this time tomorrow, I shal send my servants to ransack your house and your servants'houses and lay hands on everything that they value and take it away." '	6 Domani adunque, a questa medesima ora, manderò da te i miei servi, i quali, frugando la tua casa e quella dei tuoi servi, prenderanno e porterai! via ciò che loro piacerà ».
7 The king of Israel summoned al the elders of the country and said, 'You can see clearly how this manintends to ruin us. He has already demanded my wives and my children, although I have not refused him mysilver and gold.'	7 Allora il re di Israele chiamò tutti gli anziani del paese e disse: « Se ben considerate, vedrete che egli ci tende insidie, perchè, avendo egli mandato da me per aver le mie mogli, i miei figli, il mio argento, il mio oro, io non rifiutai ».
8 Al the elders and all the people said, 'Take no notice. Do not consent.'	8 Tutti gli anziani e tutto il popolo gli risposero: « Non gli dare ascolto, non cedere ».
9 So he gave this answer to Ben-Hadad's messengers, 'Say to my lord the king, "Al you first required ofyour servant I wil do, but this I cannot do." ' And the messengers went back with the answer.	9 Acab allora rispose ai messi di Benadad: « Dite al re mio signore: tutto quello che da principio mandasti a dire a me tuo servo, lo farò; ma quest'altra cosa non posso farla».
10 Ben-Hadad then sent him the following message, 'May the gods bring unnameable ills on me andworse il s too, if there is enough dust in Samaria for each of my fol owers to have a handful!'	10 I messi andaron a portar la risposta a Benadad, il quale li rimandò a dire: « Gli dèi mi facciano questo e peggio, se la polvere di Samaria basta per empire il pugno di tutta la gente che mi segue ».
11 But the king of Israel returned this answer, 'Say: the man who puts on his armour is not the one toboast, but the man who takes it off.'	11 Il re d'Israele gli mandò questa risposta: « Chi è armato non si glori!i come chi posa l'armi ».
12 When Ben-Hadad heard this message -- he was under the awnings drinking with the kings -- he gaveorders to his servants, 'Take up position!' And they took up their positions against the city.	12 Quando Benadad, che era allora a bere cogli altri re nelle tende, sentì queste parole, disse ai suoi servi: « Circondate la città ». Ed essi la circondarono.
13 A prophet then arrived, looking for Ahab king of Israel. 'Yahweh says this,' he said. ' "You have seenthis huge army? This very day I shal deliver it into your hands, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '	13 Ed ecco un profeta accostarsi ad Acab re d'Israele e dirgli: « Cosi dice il Signore: Vedi tu questa immensa moltitudine? Ecco io oggi la darò nelle tue mani, affinchè tu conosca che io sono il Signore ».
14 'By whose means?' Ahab asked. The prophet replied, 'Yahweh says this, "By means of the guards ofthe district governors." ' 'Who wil co-ordinate the attack?' Ahab asked. 'You will,' the prophet replied.	14 Acab disse: « Per mezzo di chi? » L'altro rispose: « Così dice il Signore: per mezzo dei servi dei capi delle provincie ». Acab disse: « Chi comincerà la battaglia? » L'altro rispose: «Tu».
15 So Ahab inspected the guards of the district governors: there were two hundred and thirty-two. Afterthese he reviewed the army, all the Israelites: there were seven thousand.	15 Acab allora fece la rassegna dei servi dei capi delle provincie e ne trovò duecento trentadue; dopo di essi fece la rassegna del popolo dei figli d'Israele: sette mila.
16 They made a sortie at midday, when Ben-Hadad was drinking himself senseless under the awnings,he and the thirty-two kings who were al ies.	16 Questi fecero una sortita sul mezzodì, mentre Benadad, già ubriaco, beveva nella sua tenda con i trentadue re ch'eran venuti in suo aiuto.
17 The guards of the district governors led the sortie. A report was made to Ben-Hadad: 'Some menhave come out of Samaria.'	17 I servi dei capi delle provincie uscirono in prima linea; Benadad mandò, e tornarono a dirgli: « Sono usciti degli uomini da Samaria ».
18 He said, 'If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take themalive too.'	18 Egli disse: « Se vengono per la pace, prendeteli vivi; se per combattere, prendeteli vivi ».
19 So they made a sortie from the city, the district governors' guards and behind them the army,	19 Ma i servi dei capi delle provincie, seguiti dal resto dell'esercito,
20 and each struck down his man. Aram took to flight and Israel pursued; Ben-Hadad king of Aramescaped on horseback.	20 COlpirono ciascuno che gli veniva contro, e i Siri fuggirono e Israele l'inseguì. Benadad stesso, re di Siria, se ne fuggì a cavallo coi suoi cavalieri.
21 The king of Israel then advanced, capturing horses and chariots and inflicting a great defeat on Aram.	21 Il re d'Israele, essendo uscito a combattere, battè i cavalli e i carri, e inflisse alla Siria una grande sconfìtta.
22 The prophet then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Now is the time to be resolute and think careful yabout what you should do, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram wil march against you.'	22 Allora il profeta, accostatosi al re d'Israele, gli disse: « Orsù, fatti animo e pensa bene al da farsi, perchè l'anno venturo il re di Siria salirà contro di te ».
23 The servants of the king of Aram said to him, 'Their gods are gods of the mountains; that is why theyhave proved stronger than we are. But if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.	23 Or dunque dissero al re di Siria i suoi servi: « I loro dèi sono dèi delle montagne: ecco perchè ci han vinti, ma se noi sceglieremo di combattere contro di loro nelle pianure, li vinceremo.
24 This is what you must do: remove all these kings from their commands and appoint professionalsoldiers in their place.	24 Tu dunque fa così: allontana tutti quei re dal tuo esercito, e metti al loro posto dei capitani;
25 You, for your part, must recruit an army as large as the one which deserted you, with as many horsesand as many chariots; then if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.' He listened to theiradvice and acted accordingly.	25 forma un esercito uguale a quello caduto, e fa lo stesso dei cavalli e dei carri; e noi combatteremo contro di loro nelle pianure, e vedrai che li vinceremo ». Egli diede ascolto e fece secondo il loro consiglio.
26 At the turn of the year, Ben-Hadad mustered the Aramaeans and marched on Aphek to fight Israel.	26 Passato un anno, Benadad, fatta la rassegna dei Siri, salì in Afec per combattere contro Israele.
27 The Israelites were already mobilised and provisioned, and marched out to meet them. Encampedopposite them, the Israelites looked like two herds of goats, whereas the Aramaeans fil ed the countryside.	27 Fu fatta la rassegna anche dei figli d'Israele, i quali, presi dei viveri, andarono loro incontro, e, posto il campo di faccia ai nemici, parevano due piccoli greggi di capre, mentre i Siri riempivano il paese.
28 The man of God then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Yahweh says this, "Since Aram has saidthat Yahweh is a god of the mountains and not a god of the plains, I shall put the whole of this huge army intoyour power, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '	28 Un uomo di Dio accostatosi al re d'Israele, gli disse: « Così dice il Signore: Perchè i Siri hanno detto: Il Signore è Dio dei monti, e non Dio delle valli, io darò tutta questa moltitudine nelle tue mani, e conoscerete che io sono il Signore ».
29 For seven days they were encamped opposite each other. On the seventh day battle was joined andthe Israelites slaughtered the Aramaeans, a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.	29 Per sette giorni i due eserciti stettero accampati l'un contro l'altro; al settimo giorno fu data battaglia, e i figli d'Israele uccisero in un sol giorno cento mila pedoni ai Siri.
30 The rest fled to Aphek, into the citadel, but the city walls collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of thesurvivors. Now Ben-Hadad had fled and taken refuge in an inner room inside the citadel.	30 Quelli scampati fuggirono nella città di Afec, ma il muro cadde sopra i ventisette mila uomini che eran rimasti. Benadad entrò fuggendo nella città, e si appiattò in una stanza che era dentro un'altra.
31 'Look,' his servants said to him, 'we have heard that the kings of Israel are faithful and kind kings. Letus put sackcloth round our waists and cords round our heads and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he wilspare your life.'	31 Ma i suoi servi gli dissero: « Ecco, abbiamo sentito dire che i re d'Israele sono clementi: mettiamoci adunque dei sacelli ai fianchi e delle corde al capo e andiamo incontro al re d'Israele; forse egli ci salverà la vita ».
32 So they wrapped sackcloth round their waists and put cords round their heads and went to the king ofIsrael, and said, 'Your servant Ben-Hadad says, "Spare my life." '	32 Si cinsero i fianchi coi sacchi, si posero le corde al capo, andarono dal re d'Israele e gli dissero: « Benadad tuo servo dice: Ti scongiuro, salvami la vita ». Ed egli disse: « Se è ancor vivo è mio fratello ».
33 'So he is stil alive?' he replied. 'He is my brother.' The men took this for a good omen and quicklyseized on his words. 'Yes,' they said, 'Ben-Hadad is your brother.' Ahab said, 'Go and fetch him.' Then Ben-Hadad came out to him and Ahab made him get up into his chariot.	33 I Siri ebbero questo per buon augurio, e subito presolo in parola, dissero: « Benadad è tuo fratello ». Ed egli disse loro: « Amdate e conducetelo a me ». Benadad allora si presentò a lui, che lo fece salire sul suo carro.
34 Ben-Hadad said, 'I shall restore the towns which my father took from your father and you may set upa trading quarter for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria.' 'With a treaty,' Ahab said, 'I shall set youfree.' Granting him a treaty, Ahab let him go.	34 Benadad gli disse: « Io restituirò le città che mio padre tolse a tuo padre, fatti pure delle piazze in Damasco, come il padre mio ne fece in Samaria, e io, fatta alleanza con te, me ne andrò ». Acab fece allora alleanza e lo rimandò.
35 At Yahweh's command a member of the brotherhood of prophets said to a companion of his, 'Strikeme,' but the man refused to strike him.	35 Allora un uomo dei figli dei profeti disse al suo compagno, colla parola del Signore: « Percuotimi ». Ma quello non volle percuoterlo.
36 So he said to him, 'Since you have disobeyed Yahweh's order, the very moment you leave me a lionwil kill you.' And no sooner had he left him than he met a lion, which killed him.	36 Ed egli disse: « Perchè tu non hai ascoltata la voce del Signore, ecco, dopo che sarai partito da me, un leone ti ucciderà ». E quando quello si fu allontanato da lui un poco, un leone gli andò incontro e l'uccise.
37 The prophet then went to find another man and said, 'Strike me,' and the man struck him andwounded him.	37 Avendo poi trovato un altro uomo gli disse: « Percuotimi ». E quello lo percosse da ferirlo.
38 The prophet then went and stood waiting for the king on the road, disguising himself with a bandageover his eyes.	38 Il profeta allora partì e andò a trovare il re, cambiando, coll'imbrattarsi di polvere, l'aspetto dei suoi occhi e della sua faccia.
39 As the king passed, he cal ed out to him, 'Your servant was making his way to where the fight wasthickest when someone left the fighting to bring a man to me, and said, "Guard this man; if he is found missing,your life wil pay for his, or else you wil have to pay one talent of silver."	39 Passato il re, gridò dietro a lui e disse: « Il tuo servo uscì a combattere nella mischia; ma, essendosi uno dato alla fuga, un altro lo condusse a me e disse: Custodisci quest'uomo: se lo farai scappare, la tua vita sarà per la sua, o almeno pagherai un talento d'argento.
40 But your servant was busy with one thing and another, the man disappeared.' The king of Israel said,'That is your sentence then. You have pronounced it yourself.'	40 Or mentre io, turbato, mi volgevo in qua e là, egli in un baleno disparve ». Il re d'Israele gli disse: « La tua condanna è quella stessa che tu hai pronunziata ».
41 At this the man quickly pul ed off the bandage over his eyes, and the king of Israel recognised him asone of the prophets.	41 Ma egli pulì dalla polvere la sua faccia, e il re d'Israele lo riconobbe per uno dei profeti.
42 He said to the king, 'Yahweh says this, "Since you have let the man escape who was under my curseof destruction, your life wil pay for his, your people for his people." '	42 Allora egli disse al re: « Queste cose dice il Signore: Perchè ti sei lasciato sfuggire di mano un uomo degno di morte, la tua vita sarà per la sua, il tuo popolo per il suo popolo ».
43 And the king of Israel went home, gloomy and out of temper, back to Samaria.	43 Il re d'Israele, sdegnando di sentire ancora, fece ritorno alla sua casa, e, pieno di furore, andò a Samaria.
