1 Kings 20

1 Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his whole army -- thirty-two kings were with him, and horses andchariots -- and marched on Samaria, to besiege it and take it by assault.	1 Ben-Hadad, roi d'Aram, rassembla toute son armée -- il y avait avec lui 32 rois, des chevaux et deschars -- et il vint investir Samarie et lui donner l'assaut.
2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel to tel him, 'Ben-Hadad says this,	2 Il envoya en ville des messagers à Achab, roi d'Israël,
3 "Your silver and gold are mine. Your wives and children remain yours." '	3 et lui fit dire: "Ainsi parle Ben-Hadad. Ton argent et ton or sont à moi, tes femmes et tes enfantsrestent à toi."
4 The king of Israel replied, 'As you command, my lord king. Myself and al I have are yours.'	4 Le roi d'Israël donna cette réponse: "A tes ordres, Monseigneur le roi! Je suis à toi avec tout ce quim'appartient."
5 The messengers came again, this time they said, 'Ben-Hadad says this, "I have already sent you anorder to hand over your silver and your gold, your wives and your children;	5 Mais les messagers revinrent et dirent: "Ainsi parle Ben-Hadad. Je t'ai mandé: Donne-moi tonargent et ton or, tes femmes et tes enfants.
6 but I swear, this time tomorrow, I shal send my servants to ransack your house and your servants'houses and lay hands on everything that they value and take it away." '	6 Sois sûr que demain à pareille heure, je t'enverrai mes serviteurs, ils fouilleront ta maison et lesmaisons de tes serviteurs, ils mettront la main sur tout ce qui leur plaira et ils l'emporteront."
7 The king of Israel summoned al the elders of the country and said, 'You can see clearly how this manintends to ruin us. He has already demanded my wives and my children, although I have not refused him mysilver and gold.'	7 Le roi d'Israël convoqua tous les anciens du pays et dit: "Reconnaissez clairement que celui-là nousveut du mal! Il me réclame mes femmes et mes enfants, pourtant je ne lui ai pas refusé mon argent et mon or."
8 Al the elders and all the people said, 'Take no notice. Do not consent.'	8 Tous les anciens et tout le peuple lui dirent: "N'obéis pas! ne consens pas!"
9 So he gave this answer to Ben-Hadad's messengers, 'Say to my lord the king, "Al you first required ofyour servant I wil do, but this I cannot do." ' And the messengers went back with the answer.	9 Il donna donc cette réponse aux messagers de Ben-Hadad: "Dites à Monseigneur le roi: Tout ce quetu as demandé à ton serviteur la première fois, je le ferai; mais cette autre exigence, je ne puis la satisfaire." Etles messagers partirent, emportant la réponse.
10 Ben-Hadad then sent him the following message, 'May the gods bring unnameable ills on me andworse il s too, if there is enough dust in Samaria for each of my fol owers to have a handful!'	10 Alors Ben-Hadad lui envoya ce message: "Que les dieux me fassent tel mal et qu'ils y ajoutentencore tel autre, s'il y a assez de poignées de décombres à Samarie pour tout le peuple qui me suit!"
11 But the king of Israel returned this answer, 'Say: the man who puts on his armour is not the one toboast, but the man who takes it off.'	11 Mais le roi d'Israël fit cette réponse: "Dites: Que celui qui boucle son ceinturon ne se glorifie pascomme celui qui le défait!"
12 When Ben-Hadad heard this message -- he was under the awnings drinking with the kings -- he gaveorders to his servants, 'Take up position!' And they took up their positions against the city.	12 Lorsque Ben-Hadad apprit cela -- il était à boire avec les rois sous les tentes --, il commanda à sesserviteurs: "A vos postes!" et ils prirent leurs positions contre la ville.
13 A prophet then arrived, looking for Ahab king of Israel. 'Yahweh says this,' he said. ' "You have seenthis huge army? This very day I shal deliver it into your hands, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '	13 Alors un prophète vint trouver Achab, roi d'Israël, et dit: "Ainsi parle Yahvé. As-tu vu cette grandefoule? Voici que je la livre aujourd'hui en ta main et tu reconnaîtras que je suis Yahvé."
14 'By whose means?' Ahab asked. The prophet replied, 'Yahweh says this, "By means of the guards ofthe district governors." ' 'Who wil co-ordinate the attack?' Ahab asked. 'You will,' the prophet replied.	14 Achab dit: "Par qui?" Le prophète reprit: "Ainsi parle Yahvé: Par les cadets des chefs desdistricts." Achab demanda: "Qui engagera le combat?" Le prophète répondit: "Toi."
15 So Ahab inspected the guards of the district governors: there were two hundred and thirty-two. Afterthese he reviewed the army, all the Israelites: there were seven thousand.	15 Achab passa en revue les cadets des chefs des districts. Ils étaient 232. Après eux, il passa en revuetoute l'armée, tous les Israélites, ils étaient 7.000.
16 They made a sortie at midday, when Ben-Hadad was drinking himself senseless under the awnings,he and the thirty-two kings who were al ies.	16 Ils firent une sortie à midi, alors que Ben-Hadad était à s'enivrer sous les tentes, lui et ces 32 rois,ses alliés.
17 The guards of the district governors led the sortie. A report was made to Ben-Hadad: 'Some menhave come out of Samaria.'	17 Les cadets des chefs des districts sortirent d'abord. On envoya dire à Ben-Hadad: "Des hommessont sortis de Samarie."
18 He said, 'If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take themalive too.'	18 Il dit: "S'ils sont sortis pour la paix, prenez-les vivants, et s'ils sont sortis pour le combat, prenez-les vivants aussi!"
19 So they made a sortie from the city, the district governors' guards and behind them the army,	19 Donc ceux-ci sortirent de la ville, les cadets des chefs des districts, puis l'armée derrière eux,
20 and each struck down his man. Aram took to flight and Israel pursued; Ben-Hadad king of Aramescaped on horseback.	20 et ils frappèrent chacun son homme. Aram s'enfuit et Israël le poursuivit; Ben-Hadad, roi d'Aram,se sauva sur un cheval d'attelage.
21 The king of Israel then advanced, capturing horses and chariots and inflicting a great defeat on Aram.	21 Alors le roi d'Israël sortit; il prit les chevaux et les chars et infligea à Aram une grande défaite.
22 The prophet then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Now is the time to be resolute and think careful yabout what you should do, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram wil march against you.'	22 Le prophète s'approcha du roi d'Israël et lui dit: "Allons! Prends courage et considère bien ce quetu dois faire, car au retour de l'année le roi d'Aram marchera contre toi."
23 The servants of the king of Aram said to him, 'Their gods are gods of the mountains; that is why theyhave proved stronger than we are. But if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.	23 Les serviteurs du roi d'Aram lui dirent: "Leur Dieu est un Dieu des montagnes, c'est pourquoi ilsl'ont emporté sur nous. Mais combattons-les dans le plat pays et sûrement nous l'emporterons sur eux.
24 This is what you must do: remove all these kings from their commands and appoint professionalsoldiers in their place.	24 Fais donc ceci: destitue ces rois et mets des préfets à leur place.
25 You, for your part, must recruit an army as large as the one which deserted you, with as many horsesand as many chariots; then if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.' He listened to theiradvice and acted accordingly.	25 Pour toi, recrute une armée aussi grande que celle qui t'a abandonné, avec autant de chevaux etautant de chars; puis combattons-les dans le plat pays et sûrement nous l'emporterons sur eux." Il écouta leuravis et fit ainsi.
26 At the turn of the year, Ben-Hadad mustered the Aramaeans and marched on Aphek to fight Israel.	26 Au retour de l'année, Ben-Hadad mobilisa les Araméens et monta à Apheq pour livrer bataille àIsraël.
27 The Israelites were already mobilised and provisioned, and marched out to meet them. Encampedopposite them, the Israelites looked like two herds of goats, whereas the Aramaeans fil ed the countryside.	27 Les Israélites furent mobilisés et ravitaillés, et ils marchèrent à leur rencontre. Campés en faced'eux, les Israélites étaient comme deux troupeaux de chèvres, tandis que les Araméens couvraient le pays.
28 The man of God then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Yahweh says this, "Since Aram has saidthat Yahweh is a god of the mountains and not a god of the plains, I shall put the whole of this huge army intoyour power, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '	28 L'homme de Dieu aborda le roi d'Israël et dit: "Ainsi parle Yahvé. Parce qu'Aram a dit que Yahvéétait un Dieu des montagnes et non un Dieu des plaines, je livrerai en ta main toute cette grande foule et tusauras que je suis Yahvé."
29 For seven days they were encamped opposite each other. On the seventh day battle was joined andthe Israelites slaughtered the Aramaeans, a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.	29 Ils campèrent sept jours les uns en face des autres. Le septième jour, le combat s'engagea et lesIsraélites massacrèrent les Araméens, 100.000 hommes de pied en un seul jour.
30 The rest fled to Aphek, into the citadel, but the city walls collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of thesurvivors. Now Ben-Hadad had fled and taken refuge in an inner room inside the citadel.	30 Le reste s'enfuit à Apheq, dans la ville, mais le rempart s'écroula sur les 27.000 hommes quirestaient. Or Ben-Hadad avait pris la fuite et s'était réfugié en ville dans une chambre retirée.
31 'Look,' his servants said to him, 'we have heard that the kings of Israel are faithful and kind kings. Letus put sackcloth round our waists and cords round our heads and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he wilspare your life.'	31 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: "Vois! Nous avons entendu dire que les rois d'Israël étaient des roismiséricordieux. Nous allons mettre des sacs sur nos reins et des cordes autour de nos têtes et nous nous rendronsau roi d'Israël; peut-être te laissera-t-il la vie sauve."
32 So they wrapped sackcloth round their waists and put cords round their heads and went to the king ofIsrael, and said, 'Your servant Ben-Hadad says, "Spare my life." '	32 Ils ceignirent de sacs leurs reins et de cordes leurs têtes, allèrent auprès du roi d'Israël et dirent:"Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad parle ainsi: Puissé-je vivre!" Il répondit: "Il est donc encore vivant? Il est mon frère!"
33 'So he is stil alive?' he replied. 'He is my brother.' The men took this for a good omen and quicklyseized on his words. 'Yes,' they said, 'Ben-Hadad is your brother.' Ahab said, 'Go and fetch him.' Then Ben-Hadad came out to him and Ahab made him get up into his chariot.	33 Les hommes en augurèrent bien et ils se hâtèrent de le prendre au mot en disant: "Ben-Hadad estton frère." Achab reprit: "Allez le chercher." Ben-Hadad se rendit à lui et celui-ci le fit monter sur son char.
34 Ben-Hadad said, 'I shall restore the towns which my father took from your father and you may set upa trading quarter for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria.' 'With a treaty,' Ahab said, 'I shall set youfree.' Granting him a treaty, Ahab let him go.	34 Ben-Hadad lui dit: "Je restituerai les villes que mon père a prises à ton père; tu établiras pour toides bazars à Damas, comme mon père en avait à Samarie" -- "Pour moi, dit Achab, je te laisserai libremoyennant un traité." Achab conclut un traité avec lui et le laissa libre.
35 At Yahweh's command a member of the brotherhood of prophets said to a companion of his, 'Strikeme,' but the man refused to strike him.	35 Un des frères prophètes dit à son compagnon, par ordre de Yahvé: "Frappe-moi!" mais l'hommerefusa de le frapper.
36 So he said to him, 'Since you have disobeyed Yahweh's order, the very moment you leave me a lionwil kill you.' And no sooner had he left him than he met a lion, which killed him.	36 Alors il lui dit: "Parce que tu n'as pas obéi à la voix de Yahvé, dès que tu m'auras quitté, le lion tetuera"; comme il s'éloignait, il rencontra le lion, qui le tua.
37 The prophet then went to find another man and said, 'Strike me,' and the man struck him andwounded him.	37 Le prophète alla trouver un autre homme et dit: "Frappe-moi!" L'homme le frappa et le blessa.
38 The prophet then went and stood waiting for the king on the road, disguising himself with a bandageover his eyes.	38 Le prophète s'en alla et attendit le roi sur le chemin -- il s'était rendu méconnaissable avec unbandeau au-dessus des yeux.
39 As the king passed, he cal ed out to him, 'Your servant was making his way to where the fight wasthickest when someone left the fighting to bring a man to me, and said, "Guard this man; if he is found missing,your life wil pay for his, or else you wil have to pay one talent of silver."	39 Comme le roi passait, il lui cria: "Ton serviteur marchait au combat quand quelqu'un a quitté lesrangs et m'a amené un homme en disant: Garde cet homme! S'il vient à manquer, ta vie sera pour sa vie ou tupaieras un talent d'argent.
40 But your servant was busy with one thing and another, the man disappeared.' The king of Israel said,'That is your sentence then. You have pronounced it yourself.'	40 Or, pendant que ton serviteur était occupé ici et là, l'autre a disparu." Le roi d'Israël lui dit: "Voilàton jugement! Tu l'as toi-même prononcé."
41 At this the man quickly pul ed off the bandage over his eyes, and the king of Israel recognised him asone of the prophets.	41 Aussitôt celui-ci enleva le bandeau qu'il avait au-dessus des yeux, et le roi d'Israël reconnut qu'ilétait l'un des prophètes.
42 He said to the king, 'Yahweh says this, "Since you have let the man escape who was under my curseof destruction, your life wil pay for his, your people for his people." '	42 Il dit au roi: "Ainsi parle Yahvé. Parce que tu as laissé échapper l'homme qui m'était voué paranathème, ta vie répondra pour sa vie, et ton peuple pour son peuple."
43 And the king of Israel went home, gloomy and out of temper, back to Samaria.	43 Et le roi d'Israël s'en alla sombre et irrité, et il rentra à Samarie.
