1 Kings 20

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his whole army -- thirty-two kings were with him, and horses andchariots -- and marched on Samaria, to besiege it and take it by assault.	1 Ben Hadad, rey de Aram, reunió todo su ejército. Tenía consigo 32 reyes, caballos y carros. Subió y puso sitio a Samaría y la atacó.
2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel to tel him, 'Ben-Hadad says this,	2 Envió mensajeros a la ciudad, a Ajab, rey de Israel,
3 "Your silver and gold are mine. Your wives and children remain yours." '	3 para decirle: «Así habla Ben Hadad: Tu plata y tu oro son para mí. Tus mujeres y tus hijos para ti».
4 The king of Israel replied, 'As you command, my lord king. Myself and al I have are yours.'	4 El rey de Israel respondió: «Como tú dices, rey mi señor, tuyo soy yo y todo lo mío».
5 The messengers came again, this time they said, 'Ben-Hadad says this, "I have already sent you anorder to hand over your silver and your gold, your wives and your children;	5 Volvieron los mensajeros y dijeron: «Así habla Ben Hadad: Envío a decirte: Me darás tu plata, tu oro, tus mujeres y tus hijos.
6 but I swear, this time tomorrow, I shal send my servants to ransack your house and your servants'houses and lay hands on everything that they value and take it away." '	6 Así que mañana a estas horas te enviaré mis siervos y registrarán tu casa y las casas de tus siervos, y echarán mano a cuanto les guste, y se lo llevarán».
7 The king of Israel summoned al the elders of the country and said, 'You can see clearly how this manintends to ruin us. He has already demanded my wives and my children, although I have not refused him mysilver and gold.'	7 Convocó el rey de Israel a todos los ancianos de la tierra y les dijo: «Reconoced y ved que éste busca hacer el mal. Me pide mis mujeres y mis hijos a pesar de que no le he negado mi plata y mi oro».
8 Al the elders and all the people said, 'Take no notice. Do not consent.'	8 Todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo dijeron: «No le escuches, no consientas».
9 So he gave this answer to Ben-Hadad's messengers, 'Say to my lord the king, "Al you first required ofyour servant I wil do, but this I cannot do." ' And the messengers went back with the answer.	9 Dijo a los enviados de Ben Hadad: «Decid a mi señor el rey: Todo lo que mandaste la primera vez a tu siervo, lo haré; pero esto no puedo hacerlo». Se fueron los mensajeros llevando la respuesta.
10 Ben-Hadad then sent him the following message, 'May the gods bring unnameable ills on me andworse il s too, if there is enough dust in Samaria for each of my fol owers to have a handful!'	10 Entonces, Ben Hadad envió a decir: «Esto me hagan los dioses y esto me añadan si hay bastante polvo en Samaría para los puños de todo el pueblo que me sigue».
11 But the king of Israel returned this answer, 'Say: the man who puts on his armour is not the one toboast, but the man who takes it off.'	11 El rey de Israel respondió: «Decid: No se alabe quien se ciñe como el que se desciñe».
12 When Ben-Hadad heard this message -- he was under the awnings drinking with the kings -- he gaveorders to his servants, 'Take up position!' And they took up their positions against the city.	12 Cuando Ben Hadad escuchó esta palabra, estaba bebiendo con los reyes en la tienda, y dijo a sus servidores: «Tomad posiciones». Y tomaron posiciones contra la ciudad.
13 A prophet then arrived, looking for Ahab king of Israel. 'Yahweh says this,' he said. ' "You have seenthis huge army? This very day I shal deliver it into your hands, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '	13 Se acercó a Ajab, rey de Israel, un profeta y le dijo: «Así habla Yahveh: ¿Has visto esta gran multitud? Hoy la entrego en tus manos y sabrás que yo soy Yahveh».
14 'By whose means?' Ahab asked. The prophet replied, 'Yahweh says this, "By means of the guards ofthe district governors." ' 'Who wil co-ordinate the attack?' Ahab asked. 'You will,' the prophet replied.	14 «Ajab dijo: «¿Por medio de quién?» Respondió: «Así dice Yahveh: Por medio de los jóvenes de los jefes de distritos». Preguntó Ajab: «¿Quién debe entablar el combate?» Respondió: «Tú».
15 So Ahab inspected the guards of the district governors: there were two hundred and thirty-two. Afterthese he reviewed the army, all the Israelites: there were seven thousand.	15 Pasó revista a los jóvenes de los jefes de distritos, que eran 232; después de ellos, pasó revista a todo el pueblo, todos los israelitas, 7.000.
16 They made a sortie at midday, when Ben-Hadad was drinking himself senseless under the awnings,he and the thirty-two kings who were al ies.	16 Hicieron una salida a mediodía, mientras Ben Hadad estaba bebiendo hasta la imbriaguez en sus tiendas con los 32 reyes auxiliares.
17 The guards of the district governors led the sortie. A report was made to Ben-Hadad: 'Some menhave come out of Samaria.'	17 Salieron en cabeza los jóvenes de los jefes de distritos. Enviaron a avisar a Ben Hadad: «Han salido algunos jóvenes de Samaría».
18 He said, 'If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take themalive too.'	18 El respondió: «Si han salido en son de paz, prendedles vivos; si han salido en son de guerra, prendedles vivos».
19 So they made a sortie from the city, the district governors' guards and behind them the army,	19 Salieron, pues, de la ciudad aquellos jóvenes de los jefes de los distritos y el ejército detrás de ellos.
20 and each struck down his man. Aram took to flight and Israel pursued; Ben-Hadad king of Aramescaped on horseback.	20 Abatió cada uno a su hombre. Aram se dio a la fuga e Israel le persiguió. Ben Hadad, rey de Aram, pudo salvarse a caballo con algunos jinetes.
21 The king of Israel then advanced, capturing horses and chariots and inflicting a great defeat on Aram.	21 Salió el rey de Israel y se apoderó de los caballos y carros, infligiendo a Aram una gran derrota.
22 The prophet then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Now is the time to be resolute and think careful yabout what you should do, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram wil march against you.'	22 Se acercó el profeta al rey de Israel y dijo: «Anda, cobra ánimo, y conoce y mira lo que has de hacer, porque el año que viene el rey de Aram subirá contra ti».
23 The servants of the king of Aram said to him, 'Their gods are gods of the mountains; that is why theyhave proved stronger than we are. But if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.	23 Los servidores del rey de Aram le dijeron: «Su Dios es un Dios de las montañas; por eso fueron más fuertes que nosotros. Pero atacaremos en la llanura y ¿no seremos más fuertes que ellos?
24 This is what you must do: remove all these kings from their commands and appoint professionalsoldiers in their place.	24 Haz esto: quita de su puesto a cada uno de los reyes, y pon gobernadores en su lugar.
25 You, for your part, must recruit an army as large as the one which deserted you, with as many horsesand as many chariots; then if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.' He listened to theiradvice and acted accordingly.	25 Por tu parte, recluta un ejército como el ejército que perdiste, con otros tantos caballos y carros, y les atacaremos en la llanura. ¿No seremos más fuertes que ellos?» Escuchó su voz e hizo así.
26 At the turn of the year, Ben-Hadad mustered the Aramaeans and marched on Aphek to fight Israel.	26 A la vuelta del año, Ben Hadad pasó revista a los arameos y subió a Afeq para luchar contra Israel.
27 The Israelites were already mobilised and provisioned, and marched out to meet them. Encampedopposite them, the Israelites looked like two herds of goats, whereas the Aramaeans fil ed the countryside.	27 Se pasó revista a los israelitas que fueron provistos de vituallas y marcharon a su encuentro. Los israelitas acamparon frente a ellos como dos rebaños de cabras, mientras que los arameos llenaban la tierra.
28 The man of God then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Yahweh says this, "Since Aram has saidthat Yahweh is a god of the mountains and not a god of the plains, I shall put the whole of this huge army intoyour power, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '	28 El hombre de Dios se acercó al rey de Israel y dijo: «Así habla Yahveh: Por haber dicho los arameos: Yahveh es un Dios de la montaña, no es Dios de las llanuras, voy a entregar toda esta gran muchedumbre en tus manos y sabrás que yo soy Yahveh».
29 For seven days they were encamped opposite each other. On the seventh day battle was joined andthe Israelites slaughtered the Aramaeans, a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.	29 Acamparon frente a frente durante siete días y el séptimo día trabaron batalla. Los israelitas batieron a los arameos, 100.000 infantes en un día.
30 The rest fled to Aphek, into the citadel, but the city walls collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of thesurvivors. Now Ben-Hadad had fled and taken refuge in an inner room inside the citadel.	30 Los restantes huyeron a la ciudad de Afeq, pero la muralla se desplomó sobres los 27.000 hombres que quedaban. Ben Hadad había huido y se había refugiado en la ciudad, en una habitación retirada.
31 'Look,' his servants said to him, 'we have heard that the kings of Israel are faithful and kind kings. Letus put sackcloth round our waists and cords round our heads and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he wilspare your life.'	31 Sus servidores le dijeron: «Hemos oído que los reyes de la casa de Israel son reyes misericordiosos. Deja que nos pongamos sayales sobre nuestros lomos y cuerdas en nuestras cabezas y salgamos hacia el rey de Israel. Acaso te deje la vida».
32 So they wrapped sackcloth round their waists and put cords round their heads and went to the king ofIsrael, and said, 'Your servant Ben-Hadad says, "Spare my life." '	32 Se ciñeron sayales a sus lomos y cuerdas sobre sus cabezas y fueron al rey de Israel y le dijeron: «Tu siervo Ben Hadad dice: Que pueda yo conservar mi vida». El respondió: «¿Vive aún? ¡Es mi hermano!»
33 'So he is stil alive?' he replied. 'He is my brother.' The men took this for a good omen and quicklyseized on his words. 'Yes,' they said, 'Ben-Hadad is your brother.' Ahab said, 'Go and fetch him.' Then Ben-Hadad came out to him and Ahab made him get up into his chariot.	33 Los hombres lo tomaron como buen augurio y se apresuraron a tomarle la palabra diciendo: «Hermano tuyo es Ben Hadad». El dijo: «Id a traerlo». Ben Hadad salió hacia él, y él le hizo subir a su carro.
34 Ben-Hadad said, 'I shall restore the towns which my father took from your father and you may set upa trading quarter for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria.' 'With a treaty,' Ahab said, 'I shall set youfree.' Granting him a treaty, Ahab let him go.	34 Ben Hadad le dijo: «Devolveré las ciudades que mi padre tomó a tu padre; y tú pondrás bazares para ti en Damasco, como mi padre puso en Samaría». - «Con este pacto te dejaré libre». Hizo un pacto con él y le dejó libre.
35 At Yahweh's command a member of the brotherhood of prophets said to a companion of his, 'Strikeme,' but the man refused to strike him.	35 Un hombre de los hijos de los profetas dijo a su compañero: «Por orden de Yahveh, hiéreme»; pero el hombre no quiso herirle.
36 So he said to him, 'Since you have disobeyed Yahweh's order, the very moment you leave me a lionwil kill you.' And no sooner had he left him than he met a lion, which killed him.	36 Le dijo: «Por no haber escuchado la voz de Yahveh, en cuanto te marches de mi lado, el león te herirá». Se fue de su lado y le encontró al león, que le hirió.
37 The prophet then went to find another man and said, 'Strike me,' and the man struck him andwounded him.	37 Halló a otro hombre y le dijo: «Hiéreme». El hombre le dio un golpe y le hirió.
38 The prophet then went and stood waiting for the king on the road, disguising himself with a bandageover his eyes.	38 El profeta se fue y se puso a esperar al rey en el camino. Se había disfrazado con una banda sobre los ojos.
39 As the king passed, he cal ed out to him, 'Your servant was making his way to where the fight wasthickest when someone left the fighting to bring a man to me, and said, "Guard this man; if he is found missing,your life wil pay for his, or else you wil have to pay one talent of silver."	39 Cuando el rey pasaba clamó al rey y dijo: «Tu siervo había llegado al centro de la batalla cuando uno abandonó las filas y me trajo un hombre y me dijo: “Custodia a este hombre; si llega a faltar, tu vida responderá por la suya, o pagarás un talento de plata.”
40 But your servant was busy with one thing and another, the man disappeared.' The king of Israel said,'That is your sentence then. You have pronounced it yourself.'	40 Pero tu siervo estaba ocupado aquí y allá y éste desapareció». El rey de Israel le dijo: «Esa es tu sentencia. Tú mismo lo has sentenciado».
41 At this the man quickly pul ed off the bandage over his eyes, and the king of Israel recognised him asone of the prophets.	41 El entonces se apresuró a quitarse la banda de los ojos y el rey de Israel le reconoció como uno de los profetas.
42 He said to the king, 'Yahweh says this, "Since you have let the man escape who was under my curseof destruction, your life wil pay for his, your people for his people." '	42 Dijo al rey: «Así dice Yahveh: Por haber dejado ir de tus manos al hombre entregado a mi anatema, tu vida pagará por su vida y tu pueblo por su pueblo».
43 And the king of Israel went home, gloomy and out of temper, back to Samaria.	43 El rey de Israel se fue a su casa triste e irritado, y entró en Samaría.
