1 Kings 20

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his whole army -- thirty-two kings were with him, and horses andchariots -- and marched on Samaria, to besiege it and take it by assault.	1 Ben-Adàd, re di Aram, radunò l'intero suo esercito: aveva con sé trentadue re, cavalli e carri. Salì ad assediare Samaria e le diede l'assalto.
2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel to tel him, 'Ben-Hadad says this,	2 Poi inviò messaggeri nella città, ad Acab, re d'Israele,
3 "Your silver and gold are mine. Your wives and children remain yours." '	3 i quali gli dissero: "Così parla Ben-Adàd: "Il tuo argento e il tuo oro appartengono a me, le tue donne e i tuoi figli rimangono per te".
4 The king of Israel replied, 'As you command, my lord king. Myself and al I have are yours.'	4 Il re d'Israele rispose in questi termini: "Come tu dici, o mio signore re. Io stesso e tutto quanto mi appartiene siamo tuoi".
5 The messengers came again, this time they said, 'Ben-Hadad says this, "I have already sent you anorder to hand over your silver and your gold, your wives and your children;	5 Ma i messaggeri ritornarono a dire: "Così parla Ben-Adàd: "Io ho mandato a dirti che devi darmi il tuo argento, il tuo oro, le tue donne e i tuoi figli.
6 but I swear, this time tomorrow, I shal send my servants to ransack your house and your servants'houses and lay hands on everything that they value and take it away." '	6 Quando domani, a quest'ora, ti manderò i miei servi, essi frugheranno il tuo palazzo e le case dei tuoi servi, s'impadroniranno di quanto tornerà gradito agli occhi loro e lo porteranno via".
7 The king of Israel summoned al the elders of the country and said, 'You can see clearly how this manintends to ruin us. He has already demanded my wives and my children, although I have not refused him mysilver and gold.'	7 Allora il re d'Israele convocò tutti gli anziani del paese e disse: "Vi accorgete facilmente che costui mi vuole del male; infatti mi ha mandato a chiedere le mie donne, i miei figli, dopo che io non gli avevo rifiutato né il mio argento né il mio oro".
8 Al the elders and all the people said, 'Take no notice. Do not consent.'	8 Tutti gli anziani e tutto il popolo gli risposero: "Non prestare ascolto né acconsentire!".
9 So he gave this answer to Ben-Hadad's messengers, 'Say to my lord the king, "Al you first required ofyour servant I wil do, but this I cannot do." ' And the messengers went back with the answer.	9 Allora Acab disse ai messaggeri di Ben-Adàd: "Riferite al re vostro signore: "Farò tutto quello che hai richiesto al tuo servo la prima volta, ma non posso adempiere quest'altra richiesta". I messaggeri partirono e riferirono la cosa.
10 Ben-Hadad then sent him the following message, 'May the gods bring unnameable ills on me andworse il s too, if there is enough dust in Samaria for each of my fol owers to have a handful!'	10 Allora Ben-Adàd mandò a dirgli: "Che gli dèi mi facciano questo male e mi aggiungano ancora quest'altro, se la polvere di Samaria basterà a riempire una mano a tutto il popolo che mi segue".
11 But the king of Israel returned this answer, 'Say: the man who puts on his armour is not the one toboast, but the man who takes it off.'	11 A sua volta il re d'Israele replicò: "Ditegli: "Chi indossa le armi non si vanti come chi le depone".
12 When Ben-Hadad heard this message -- he was under the awnings drinking with the kings -- he gaveorders to his servants, 'Take up position!' And they took up their positions against the city.	12 Quando Ben-Adàd udì questa risposta -- egli stava bevendo assieme ai re sotto le tende -- comandò ai suoi servi: "Disponetevi all'attacco"; ed essi si disposero contro la città.
13 A prophet then arrived, looking for Ahab king of Israel. 'Yahweh says this,' he said. ' "You have seenthis huge army? This very day I shal deliver it into your hands, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '	13 Ed ecco un profeta s'avvicinò ad Acab, re d'Israele, e gli disse: "Così dice il Signore: "Hai visto tutta quella grande moltitudine? Ecco oggi stesso te la darò in mano e così saprai che io sono il Signore".
14 'By whose means?' Ahab asked. The prophet replied, 'Yahweh says this, "By means of the guards ofthe district governors." ' 'Who wil co-ordinate the attack?' Ahab asked. 'You will,' the prophet replied.	14 Acab disse: "Per mezzo di chi?". Quegli rispose: "Così dice il Signore: "Per mezzo dei giovani al servizio dei capi dei distretti". L'altro domandò ancora: "Chi inizierà la battaglia?". Il profeta rispose: "Tu stesso!".
15 So Ahab inspected the guards of the district governors: there were two hundred and thirty-two. Afterthese he reviewed the army, all the Israelites: there were seven thousand.	15 Allora il re passò in rassegna i giovani ch'erano al servizio dei capi dei distretti: erano in tutto duecentotrentadue. Poi passò in rassegna tutto il popolo, tutti i figli d'Israele: erano settemila.
16 They made a sortie at midday, when Ben-Hadad was drinking himself senseless under the awnings,he and the thirty-two kings who were al ies.	16 Essi fecero una sortita sul mezzogiorno, mentre Ben-Adàd si ubriacava sotto le tende assieme ai trentadue re suoi alleati.
17 The guards of the district governors led the sortie. A report was made to Ben-Hadad: 'Some menhave come out of Samaria.'	17 Per primi uscirono i giovani al servizio dei capi dei distretti. E si mandò ad avvertire Ben-Adàd dicendogli: "Sono usciti uomini da Samaria".
18 He said, 'If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take themalive too.'	18 Egli rispose: "Se essi sono usciti con intenzioni pacifiche, catturateli vivi; se sono usciti per combattere, catturateli vivi ugualmente!".
19 So they made a sortie from the city, the district governors' guards and behind them the army,	19 Dalla città erano usciti i giovani al servizio dei capi dei distretti e l'esercito dietro di loro.
20 and each struck down his man. Aram took to flight and Israel pursued; Ben-Hadad king of Aramescaped on horseback.	20 Ciascuno uccise il suo uomo. Aram si diede alla fuga e Israele lo inseguì. Ben-Adàd, re di Aram, si salvò fuggendo a cavallo; con lui erano alcuni cavalieri.
21 The king of Israel then advanced, capturing horses and chariots and inflicting a great defeat on Aram.	21 Il re d'Israele uscì, catturò i cavalli e i carri e inflisse ad Aram una grande sconfitta.
22 The prophet then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Now is the time to be resolute and think careful yabout what you should do, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram wil march against you.'	22 Allora il profeta s'avvicinò al re d'Israele e gli disse: "Orsù, fatti coraggio e considera bene quello che devi fare, poiché al volgere dell'anno il re di Aram salirà di nuovo contro di te".
23 The servants of the king of Aram said to him, 'Their gods are gods of the mountains; that is why theyhave proved stronger than we are. But if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.	23 I servi del re di Aram gli dissero: "Il loro Dio è un Dio delle montagne, per questo ci hanno vinti; ma se li impegneremo in battaglia nella pianura, certamente li vinceremo.
24 This is what you must do: remove all these kings from their commands and appoint professionalsoldiers in their place.	24 Fa' dunque in questo modo: rimuovi tutti i re dal loro posto sostituendoli con governatori.
25 You, for your part, must recruit an army as large as the one which deserted you, with as many horsesand as many chariots; then if we fight them on level ground, we shal certainly beat them.' He listened to theiradvice and acted accordingly.	25 Per te recluta un esercito pari a quello che hai perso, con altrettanti cavalli e carri; quindi diamo loro battaglia nella pianura e certamente li vinceremo". Il re ascoltò il loro consiglio e fece così.
26 At the turn of the year, Ben-Hadad mustered the Aramaeans and marched on Aphek to fight Israel.	26 Al volgere dell'anno Ben-Adàd mobilitò gli Aramei e salì ad Afek, per dare battaglia ad Israele.
27 The Israelites were already mobilised and provisioned, and marched out to meet them. Encampedopposite them, the Israelites looked like two herds of goats, whereas the Aramaeans fil ed the countryside.	27 I figli d'Israele furono mobilitati e provvisti di viveri, poi mossero loro incontro. I figli d'Israele si accamparono di fronte a loro, come due greggi di capre, mentre gli Aramei riempivano la regione.
28 The man of God then went to the king of Israel and said, 'Yahweh says this, "Since Aram has saidthat Yahweh is a god of the mountains and not a god of the plains, I shall put the whole of this huge army intoyour power, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '	28 Allora un uomo di Dio s'avvicinò al re d'Israele e disse: "Così dice il Signore: "Poiché Aram ha asserito che il Signore è Dio delle montagne, ma non delle pianure, ti darò in mano tutta questa grande moltitudine e così saprai che io sono il Signore".
29 For seven days they were encamped opposite each other. On the seventh day battle was joined andthe Israelites slaughtered the Aramaeans, a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.	29 Per sette giorni stettero accampati gli uni di fronte agli altri, ma al settimo giorno si ingaggiò la battaglia e i figli d'Israele uccisero in un sol giorno centomila fanti di Aram.
30 The rest fled to Aphek, into the citadel, but the city walls collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of thesurvivors. Now Ben-Hadad had fled and taken refuge in an inner room inside the citadel.	30 I superstiti fuggirono nella città di Afek, ma le mura caddero sui ventisettemila superstiti. Anche Ben-Adàd fuggì e andò nella città a nascondersi da una stanza all'altra.
31 'Look,' his servants said to him, 'we have heard that the kings of Israel are faithful and kind kings. Letus put sackcloth round our waists and cords round our heads and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he wilspare your life.'	31 I suoi servi pertanto gli dissero: "Ecco, noi abbiamo sentito dire che i re della casa d'Israele sono re clementi; indossiamo sacchi ai fianchi e mettiamoci corde sulla testa e andiamo dal re d'Israele; chissà che non ti conservi la vita".
32 So they wrapped sackcloth round their waists and put cords round their heads and went to the king ofIsrael, and said, 'Your servant Ben-Hadad says, "Spare my life." '	32 Essi cinsero i fianchi di sacchi e le teste di corda e andarono dal re d'Israele a dirgli: "Ben-Adàd, tuo servo, dice: "Salvami la vita!". Quegli rispose: "E' ancora vivo? Egli è mio fratello!".
33 'So he is stil alive?' he replied. 'He is my brother.' The men took this for a good omen and quicklyseized on his words. 'Yes,' they said, 'Ben-Hadad is your brother.' Ahab said, 'Go and fetch him.' Then Ben-Hadad came out to him and Ahab made him get up into his chariot.	33 Quegli uomini presero ciò per buon auspicio e s'affrettarono ad averne l'assicurazione da lui domandandogli: "Ben-Adàd è tuo fratello?". Acab rispose: "Andate a prenderlo!". Allora Ben-Adàd gli uscì incontro ed egli lo fece salire sul suo carro.
34 Ben-Hadad said, 'I shall restore the towns which my father took from your father and you may set upa trading quarter for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria.' 'With a treaty,' Ahab said, 'I shall set youfree.' Granting him a treaty, Ahab let him go.	34 Ben-Adàd gli disse: "Restituirò le città che mio padre tolse a tuo padre e tu stabilirai piazze commerciali a Damasco, come mio padre le aveva stabilite in Samaria". Acab disse: "A questo patto ti lascerò libero". Acab concluse questo trattato con lui e lo lasciò in libertà.
35 At Yahweh's command a member of the brotherhood of prophets said to a companion of his, 'Strikeme,' but the man refused to strike him.	35 Uno dei discepoli dei profeti disse al suo compagno per ordine del Signore: "Colpiscimi!"; ma questi si rifiutò di colpirlo.
36 So he said to him, 'Since you have disobeyed Yahweh's order, the very moment you leave me a lionwil kill you.' And no sooner had he left him than he met a lion, which killed him.	36 Allora gli disse il primo: "Poiché non hai ascoltato la voce del Signore, ecco che, appena ti sarai allontanato da me, il leone ti ucciderà". Infatti non appena egli si fu allontanato da lui, il leone lo trovò e lo uccise.
37 The prophet then went to find another man and said, 'Strike me,' and the man struck him andwounded him.	37 Quegli trovò un altro uomo a cui disse: "Colpiscimi!". Questi lo colpì e lo ferì.
38 The prophet then went and stood waiting for the king on the road, disguising himself with a bandageover his eyes.	38 Allora il profeta andò ad aspettare il re sulla strada e si rese irriconoscibile con una benda sugli occhi.
39 As the king passed, he cal ed out to him, 'Your servant was making his way to where the fight wasthickest when someone left the fighting to bring a man to me, and said, "Guard this man; if he is found missing,your life wil pay for his, or else you wil have to pay one talent of silver."	39 Mentre passava il re, gli gridò: "Il tuo servo si era gettato nella mischia, quand'ecco un uomo si trasse in disparte e mi condusse un individuo dicendo: "Prendi in custodia quest'uomo! Qualora venisse a mancare, la tua vita pagherà per la sua vita oppure mi pagherai un talento d'argento".
40 But your servant was busy with one thing and another, the man disappeared.' The king of Israel said,'That is your sentence then. You have pronounced it yourself.'	40 Or mentre il tuo servo era occupato qua e là quello scomparve". Il re d'Israele gli disse: "Ecco il tuo verdetto! Tu stesso l'hai pronunciato!".
41 At this the man quickly pul ed off the bandage over his eyes, and the king of Israel recognised him asone of the prophets.	41 Egli allora s'affrettò a togliersi la benda dagli occhi e il re d'Israele si accorse ch'egli era uno dei profeti.
42 He said to the king, 'Yahweh says this, "Since you have let the man escape who was under my curseof destruction, your life wil pay for his, your people for his people." '	42 Questi gli disse: "Così parla il Signore: "Poiché hai lasciato scappare l'uomo da me votato all'anatèma, la tua vita sarà al posto della sua e il tuo popolo al posto del suo".
43 And the king of Israel went home, gloomy and out of temper, back to Samaria.	43 Il re d'Israele si diresse verso casa, triste e adirato, e giunse a Samaria.
