1 King David was now a very old man, and though wrapped in bedclothes he could not keep warm.	1 Le roi David se faisait vieux, il était très âgé; on avait beau le couvrir de vêtements, il ne pouvait plus se réchauffer.
2 So his servants said to him, 'Let us find a young girl for my lord the king, to wait on the king and lookafter him; she wil lie close beside you and this wil keep my lord the king warm.'	2 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: “Que l’on aille chercher pour mon seigneur le roi une jeune fille vierge; elle sera à son service, elle le soignera, elle dormira avec lui et elle tiendra chaud à mon seigneur le roi.”
3 Having searched for a beautiful girl throughout the territory of Israel, they found Abishag of Shunem andbrought her to the king.	3 On chercha donc à travers tout le pays d’Israël une belle jeune fille, et l’on trouva Abisag de Chounem; on la conduisit auprès du roi.
4 The girl was very beautiful. She looked after the king and waited on him but the king did not haveintercourse with her.	4 Cette jeune fille était vraiment très belle, elle soignait le roi, et elle le servait, mais il n’eut pas de rapports avec elle.
5 Now Adonijah son of Haggith was growing pretentious and saying, 'I shal be king!' Accordingly, heprocured a chariot and team with fifty guards to run ahead of him.	5 Pendant ce temps, Adonias fils de Haggit se mettait en avant: “C’est moi, disait-il, qui régnerai.” Il s’était acheté un char et des chevaux et 50 hommes couraient devant lui.
6 Never once in his life had his father crossed him by saying, 'Why are you behaving like that?' He wasvery handsome too; his mother had given birth to him after Absalom.	6 Son père n’avait jamais voulu le contrarier, lui dire: “Pourquoi agis-tu de la sorte?” Sa mère Haggit l’avait mis au monde après Absalom et lui aussi était très beau.
7 He conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with the priest Abiathar, who both ral ied to Adonijah's cause;	7 Il eut des entretiens avec Joab fils de Sérouya, avec le prêtre Ébyatar, et ceux-ci entrèrent dans le parti d’Adonias,
8 but neither Zadok the priest, nor Benaiah son of Jehoiada, nor the prophet Nathan, nor Shimei and Rei,nor David's champions, supported Adonijah.	8 mais le prêtre Sadoq, Bénayas fils de Yoyada, le prophète Nathan, Chiméï et Réï, ainsi que les braves de David, refusèrent de soutenir Adonias.
9 One day when Adonijah was sacrificing sheep, oxen and fattened calves at the Sliding Stone which isbeside the Ful er's Spring, he invited al his brothers, the royal princes, and al the men of Judah in the king'sservice;	9 Un jour Adonias immola des brebis, des bœufs et des veaux gras près de la Pierre-qui-Glisse, à côté de la source du Foulon. Il invita tous ses frères, les fils du roi et tous les hommes de Juda qui étaient au service du roi,
10 but he did not invite the prophet Nathan, or Benaiah, or the champions, or his brother Solomon.	10 mais il n’invita ni le prophète Nathan, ni Bénayas, ni les braves, ni son frère Salomon.
11 Nathan then said to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, 'Have you not heard that, unknown to our lordDavid, Adonijah son of Haggith has become king?	11 Alors Nathan dit à Bethsabée, la mère de Salomon: “Sais-tu qu’Adonias fils de Haggit s’est fait roi, et mon seigneur David n’en sait rien?
12 Wel , this is my advice to you if you want to save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.	12 Maintenant laisse-moi te donner un conseil si tu veux sauver ta tête et celle de ton fils Salomon.
13 Go straight in to King David and say, "My lord king, did you not make your servant this promise onoath: Your son Solomon is to be king after me; he is the one who is to sit on my throne? How is it, then, thatAdonijah is king?"	13 Va trouver le roi David et dis-lui: Mon seigneur le roi a bien fait ce serment à sa servante: C’est ton fils Salomon qui régnera après moi, c’est lui qui s’assiéra sur mon trône. Comment se fait-il donc qu’Adonias se soit fait roi?
14 And while you are stil there talking to the king, I shal come in after you and confirm what you say.'	14 Et pendant que tu seras là à parler avec le roi, j’entrerai derrière toi et je confirmerai tes paroles.”
15 So Bathsheba went to the king in his room (he was very old and Abishag of Shunem was in attendanceon him).	15 Bethsabée se rendit donc à la chambre du roi; il était très vieux et Abisag de Chounem était à son service.
16 She knelt, prostrated herself before the king, and the king said, 'What do you want?'	16 Elle s’agenouilla et se prosterna devant le roi, et le roi lui dit: “Que veux-tu?”
17 'My lord,' she replied, 'you swore to your servant by Yahweh your God, "Your son Solomon is to beking after me; he is the one who is to sit on my throne."	17 Elle lui répondit: “Mon seigneur n’a-t-il pas fait ce serment à sa servante par Yahvé, son Dieu: ‘Ton fils Salomon régnera après moi, c’est lui qui s’assiéra sur mon trône?’
18 And now here is Adonijah king, and you, my lord king, knowing nothing about it!	18 Or voilà qu’Adonias s’est fait roi sans que tu le saches, mon seigneur le roi.
19 He has sacrificed quantities of oxen, fattened calves and sheep, and invited all the royal princes, thepriest Abiathar, and Joab the army commander; but he has not invited your servant Solomon.	19 Il a immolé une quantité de bœufs, des veaux gras, des moutons; il a invité tous les fils du roi ainsi que le prêtre Ébyatar et le général Joab, mais ton serviteur Salomon, il ne l’a pas invité.
20 Yet you are the man, my lord king, to whom al Israel looks, to tel them who is to succeed my lord theking.	20 Pendant ce temps tout Israël a les yeux tournés vers toi, mon seigneur le roi, pour que tu désignes ton successeur.
21 And when my lord the king fal s asleep with his ancestors, Solomon and I shal be made to suffer forthis.'	21 Ne vois-tu pas que lorsque mon seigneur le roi sera couché avec ses pères, moi et mon fils Salomon nous paierons tout cela?”
22 She was stil speaking to the king when the prophet Nathan came in.	22 Elle n’avait pas fini de parler que le prophète Nathan arriva.
23 The king was told, 'The prophet Nathan is here'; and he came into the king's presence and prostratedhimself on his face before the king.	23 On l’annonça au roi: “Le prophète Nathan est là.” Il entra chez le roi, se prosterna la face contre terre,
24 'My lord king,' said Nathan, 'is this, then, your decree, "Adonijah is to be king after me; he is the onewho is to sit on my throne"?	24 puis il dit: “Mon seigneur le roi, tu as sans doute décidé qu’Adonias serait roi après toi et s’assiérait sur ton trône,
25 For he has gone down today and sacrificed quantities of oxen, fattened calves and sheep, and invitedal the royal princes, the army commanders, and the priest Abiathar; and they are there now, eating and drinkingin his presence and shouting, "Long live King Adonijah!"	25 car aujourd’hui il est descendu pour immoler une quantité de bœufs, de veaux gras et de moutons. Il a invité tous les fils du roi, les chefs de l’armée et le prêtre Ébyatar, et en ce moment ils mangent, ils boivent devant lui et ils crient: Vive le roi Adonias!
26 He has not, however, invited me your servant, Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, or yourservant Solomon.	26 “Mais moi, ton serviteur, le prêtre Sadoq, Bénayas, fils de Yoyada et ton serviteur Salomon, nous n’avons pas été invités.
27 Can it be that this is done with my lord the king's approval and that you have not told those loyal to youwho is to succeed to the throne of my lord the king?'	27 Est-il possible que cela vienne de mon seigneur le roi? Est-il possible qu’il ait caché à ses serviteurs le nom de celui qui s’assiérait sur le trône après lui?”
28 King David then spoke. 'Cal Bathsheba to me,' he said. And she came into the king's presence andstood before him.	28 Le roi David répondit: “Appelez-moi Bethsabée.” Elle entra donc chez le roi et se tint devant lui.
29 Then the king swore this oath, 'As Yahweh lives, who has delivered me from all adversity,	29 Le roi fit ce serment: “Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, lui qui m’a délivré de toutes mes épreuves,
30 just as I swore to you by Yahweh, God of Israel, that your son Solomon should be king after me andtake my place on my throne, so I shal bring it about this very day.'	30 aujourd’hui même je vais tenir le serment que j’ai fait par Yahvé, Dieu d’Israël. Car j’ai bien dit: ‘Ton fils Salomon régnera après moi, c’est lui qui s’assiéra sur mon trône à ma place.’ ”
31 Bathsheba knelt down, prostrated herself on her face before the king and said, 'May my lord KingDavid live for ever!'	31 Bethsabée s’agenouilla, elle se prosterna la face contre terre devant le roi et dit: “Que mon seigneur le roi David vive à jamais!”
32 Then King David said, 'Summon Zadok the priest, the prophet Nathan and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.'So they came into the king's presence.	32 Alors le roi David ordonna: “Appelez-moi le prêtre Sadoq, le prophète Nathan et Bénayas fils de Yoyada.” Ils vinrent et se présentèrent devant le roi.
33 'Take the royal guard with you,' said the king, 'mount my son Solomon on my own mule and escort himdown to Gihon.	33 Le roi leur dit: “Réunissez les serviteurs de votre seigneur; vous ferez monter mon fils Salomon sur ma propre mule et vous descendrez avec lui à la source de Guihon.
34 There Zadok the priest and the prophet Nathan are to anoint him king of Israel; then sound the trumpetand shout, "Long live King Solomon!"	34 Là, le prêtre Sadoq et le prophète Nathan le consacreront comme roi d’Israël; vous sonnerez du cor et tout le monde criera: ‘Vive le roi Salomon!’
35 Then you are to escort him back, and he is then to assume my throne and be king in place of me, forhe is the man whom I have appointed as ruler of Israel and of Judah.'	35 Puis vous remonterez derrière lui et il viendra s’asseoir sur mon trône. Car c’est lui qui va régner à ma place, c’est lui que j’ai choisi pour diriger Israël et Juda.”
36 Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king. 'Amen!' he said. 'And may Yahweh, God of my lord theking, confirm it!	36 Bénayas, fils de Yoyada, répondit au roi: “Amen! Que Yahvé, le Dieu de mon seigneur le roi réalise tout cela!
37 As Yahweh has been with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon and make his throne evengreater than the throne of my lord King David!'	37 Que Yahvé soit maintenant avec Salomon comme il a été avec mon seigneur le roi, qu’il rende son trône plus glorieux encore que le trône de mon seigneur le roi David!”
38 Zadok the priest, the prophet Nathan, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and Pelethitesthen went down; they mounted Solomon on King David's mule and escorted him to Gihon.	38 Le prêtre Sadoq, le prophète Nathan et Bénayas, fils de Yoyada, firent donc monter Salomon sur la mule du roi David et le menèrent à Guihon escortés des Kérétiens et des Pélétiens.
39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the Tent and anointed Solomon. They sounded the trumpetand all the people shouted, 'Long live King Solomon!'	39 Le prêtre Sadoq prit la corne d’huile dans la Tente et il consacra Salomon, on sonna du cor et tout le peuple cria: “Vive le roi Salomon!”
40 The people al escorted him back, with pipes playing and loud rejoicing and shouts to split the earth.	40 Puis tout le peuple remonta derrière lui; les gens jouaient de la flûte et manifestaient une grande joie, la terre tremblait à se fendre au bruit qu’ils faisaient.
41 Adonijah and his guests, who had by then finished their meal, al heard the noise. Joab too heard thesound of the trumpet and said, 'What is that noise of uproar in the city?'	41 Adonias et tous ses invités en entendirent l’écho alors qu’ils achevaient leur repas. Joab entendit le son du cor: “Pourquoi, dit-il, ces bruits d’une ville en fête?”
42 While he was stil speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived. 'Come in,' Adonijah said, 'youare an honest man, so you must be bringing good news.'	42 Il parlait encore lorsque Yonathan, le fils du prêtre Ébyatar, arriva. Adonias lui dit: “Approche, tu es un homme et tu apportes sûrement de bonnes nouvelles.”
43 'The truth is,' Jonathan answered, 'our lord King David has made Solomon king.	43 Mais Yonathan répondit à Adonias: “C’est tout le contraire! Notre seigneur le roi David a consacré Salomon comme roi.
44 With him, the king sent Zadok the priest, the prophet Nathan, Benaiah son of Jehoiada and theCherethites and Pelethites; they mounted him on the king's mule,	44 Le roi a envoyé avec lui le prêtre Sadoq, le prophète Nathan, Bénayas fils de Yoyada, les Kérétiens et les Pélétiens. Ils l’ont assis sur la mule du roi
45 and Zadok the priest and the prophet Nathan have anointed him king at Gihon; and they have goneback again with shouts of joy and the city is now in an uproar; that was the noise you heard.	45 et ensuite, à Guihon, le prêtre Sadoq et le prophète Nathan l’ont consacré comme roi. Ils sont remontés en poussant des cris de joie et la ville était en fête: c’est le bruit que vous avez entendu.
46 What is more, Solomon is seated on the royal throne.	46 “Et mieux que cela: Salomon s’est assis sur le trône du roi
47 And further, the king's officers have been to congratulate our lord King David with the words, "May yourGod make the name of Solomon more glorious than yours, and his throne more exalted than your own!" And theking bowed down on his bed,	47 et les serviteurs du roi sont venus féliciter notre seigneur le roi David: ‘Que ton Dieu, disaient-ils, rende le nom de Salomon plus glorieux encore que le tien, qu’il élève son trône plus encore que le tien.’ Le roi lui-même s’est prosterné sur son lit,
48 and then said, "Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel, for setting one of my own sons on the throne while Iam stil alive to see it!" '	48 et voici ce qu’il a dit: ‘Béni soit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël, qui a permis aujourd’hui que mes yeux voient l’un de mes descendants assis sur mon trône!’ ”
49 At this, all Adonijah's guests, taking fright, got up and made off in their several directions.	49 À ces mots, tous les invités d’Adonias furent pris de panique, ils se levèrent et partirent chacun de leur côté.
50 Adonijah, in terror of Solomon, got up and ran off to cling to the horns of the altar.	50 Adonias eut peur de Salomon, il se leva et s’en alla saisir les cornes de l’autel.
51 Solomon was told, 'You should know that Adonijah is terrified of King Solomon and is now clinging tothe horns of the altar, saying, "Let King Solomon first swear to me that he will not have his servant executed." '	51 On informa Salomon: “Voici qu’Adonias a peur du roi Salomon, il a saisi les cornes de l’autel et il a dit: ‘Que le roi Salomon me jure aujourd’hui de ne pas me faire mourir par l’épée.’ ”
52 'Should he bear himself honourably,' Solomon answered, 'not one hair of his shal fal to the ground;but if he proves difficult, he shal die.'	52 Salomon répondit: “S’il se conduit comme un homme honnête, pas un de ses cheveux ne tombera à terre, mais s’il se conduit mal, il mourra.”
53 King Solomon then sent for him to be brought down from the altar; he came and threw himselfprostrate before King Solomon; Solomon said to him, 'Go to your house.'	53 Le roi envoya des gens pour le faire descendre de l’autel, et Adonias vint se prosterner devant le roi Salomon. Salomon lui dit: “Rentre chez toi.
