Genesis 44

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Then Joseph instructed his chamberlain as follows: 'Fil these men's sacks with as much food as theycan carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his sack.	1 Poi egli ordinò a colui che era a capo della sua casa: "Riempi i sacchi di quegli uomini di tanti viveri quanti ne possono contenere, e metti il danaro di ciascuno alla bocca del proprio sacco;
2 And put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one's sack as wel as the money for hisrations.' He did as Joseph had instructed.	2 e metti la mia coppa, la coppa d'argento, alla bocca del sacco del più piccolo, col denaro del suo grano". Quello fece conforme a quanto aveva detto Giuseppe.
3 At daybreak, the men were sent off with their donkeys.	3 Quando si schiarì la mattina, gli uomini furono fatti partire con i loro asini.
4 They had gone only a little way from the city, when Joseph said to his chamberlain, 'Away now andfol ow those men. When you catch up with them, say to them, "Why have you repaid good with evil?	4 Ma erano appena usciti dalla città e ancora non erano lontani, quando Giuseppe disse a colui che era a capo della sua casa: "Lèvati, insegui quegli uomini, raggiungili e dirai loro: "Perché avete reso male per bene?
5 Is this not what my lord uses for drinking and also for reading omens? What you have done is wrong."'	5 Non è forse quella la coppa in cui beve il mio signore e della quale si serve per indovinare? Avete fatto male a fare così!".
6 So when he caught up with them he repeated these words.	6 Quello li raggiunse e ripeté loro queste parole.
7 They asked him, 'What does my lord mean? Your servants would never think of doing such a thing.	7 Allora quelli gli dissero: "Perché il mio signore dice queste cose? Lungi dai tuoi servi il fare una tale cosa!
8 Look, we brought you back the money we found in the mouths of our sacks, al the way from Canaan.Are we likely to have stolen silver or gold from your master's house?	8 Ecco, il denaro che abbiamo trovato alla bocca dei nostri sacchi te lo abbiamo riportato dalla terra di Canaan, e come potremmo rubare argento e oro dalla casa del tuo padrone?
9 Whichever of your servants is found to have it shall die, and the rest of us shal be slaves of my lord.'	9 Quello dei tuoi servi presso il quale si troverà, sarà messo a morte; e noi pure, noi diventeremo schiavi del mio signore".
10 'Very wel , then, it shal be as you say,' he replied, 'the one on whom it is found shall become myslave, but the rest of you can go free.'	10 Quello disse: "Ebbene, come avete detto, così sarà: colui presso il quale si troverà, sarà mio schiavo, e voi sarete innocenti".
11 Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and each opened his own.	11 Si affrettarono dunque a scaricare a terra ciascuno il suo sacco e ciascuno aprì il suo sacco.
12 He searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest, and found the cup inBenjamin's sack.	12 E quello li frugò, cominciando dal maggiore e terminando col minore, e la coppa fu trovata nel sacco di Beniamino.
13 Then they tore their clothes, and when each man had reloaded his donkey they returned to the city.	13 Allora essi si stracciarono le vesti, ricaricarono ciascuno il suo asino e ritornarono nella città.
14 When Judah and his brothers arrived at Joseph's house he was still there, so they fell on the groundin front of him.	14 Giuda e i suoi fratelli vennero nella casa di Giuseppe, che si trovava ancora là, e si gettarono in terra davanti a lui.
15 'What do you mean by doing this?' Joseph asked them. 'Did you not know that a man such as I am isa reader of omens?'	15 Giuseppe disse loro: "Che azione è questa che avete commesso! Non sapete che un uomo come me è capace d'indovinare?".
16 'What can we answer my lord?' Judah replied. 'What can we say? How can we clear ourselves? Godhimself has uncovered your servants' guilt. Here we are then, my lord's slaves, we no less than the one in whose possession the cup was found.'	16 Giuda disse: "Che cosa diremo al mio signore? Come parlare? Come giustificarci? Dio ha ritrovato la colpa dei tuoi servi... Eccoci schiavi del mio signore, tanto noi quanto colui in possesso del quale fu trovata la coppa".
17 'I could not think of doing such a thing,' he replied. 'The man in whose possession the cup was foundshall be my slave, but you can go back unhindered to your father.'	17 Ma egli rispose: "Dio me ne guardi di far questo! L'uomo in possesso del quale fu trovata la coppa, lui sarà mio schiavo; quanto a voi, ritornate in pace da vostro padre".
18 At this, Judah went up to him and said, 'May it please my lord, let your servant have a word privatelywith my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself.	18 Allora Giuda gli si fece innanzi e disse: "Mi scusi il mio signore! Sia permesso al tuo servo di far sentire una parola agli orecchi del mio signore; e non si accenda la tua ira contro il tuo servo, perché tu e il faraone siete tutt'uno!
19 My lord questioned his servants, "Have you father or brother?"	19 Il mio signore aveva interrogato i suoi servi in questi termini: "Avete un padre o un fratello?".
20 And we said to my lord, "We have an old father, and a younger brother born of his old age. Hisbrother is dead, so he is the only one by that mother now left, and his father loves him."	20 E noi rispondemmo al mio signore: "Abbiamo un padre vecchio, e un figliolo ancor piccolo, natogli in vecchiaia; suo fratello è morto ed egli è rimasto il solo dei figli di sua madre, e il padre suo lo ama".
21 Then you said to your servants, "Bring him down to me, so that I can set eyes on him."	21 E tu dicesti ai tuoi servi: "Conducetelo qui da me, che lo possa vedere con i miei occhi".
22 We replied to my lord, "The boy cannot leave his father. If he leaves him, his father will die."	22 Noi rispondemmo al mio signore: "Il giovinetto non può abbandonare suo padre; se lascerà suo padre, questi ne morrà".
23 But you said to your servants, "If your youngest brother does not come down with you, you wil notbe admitted to my presence again."	23 Ma tu dicesti ai tuoi servi: "Se il vostro fratello minore non verrà qui con voi, non potrete più venire alla mia presenza".
24 When we went back to your servant my father, we repeated to him what my lord had said.	24 Quando dunque fummo risaliti dal tuo servo, mio padre, gli riferimmo le parole del mio signore.
25 So when our father said, "Go back and get us a little food,"	25 Poi nostro padre disse: "Tornate a comperare un po' di viveri".
26 we said, "We cannot go down. We shall go only if our youngest brother is with us for, unless ouryoungest brother is with us, we shal not be admitted to the man's presence."	26 E noi rispondemmo: "Non possiamo scendere laggiù; se c'è con noi il nostro fratello minore, andremo laggiù, altrimenti non possiamo essere ammessi alla presenza di quell'uomo senza avere con noi il nostro fratello minore".
27 So your servant our father said to us, "You know that my wife bore me two children.	27 Allora il tuo servo, mio padre, ci disse: "Voi sapete che due erano quelli che mi aveva partorito mia moglie.
28 When one of them left me, I supposed that he must have been torn to pieces, and I have never seenhim since.	28 Uno partì da me, e dissi: senza nessun dubbio è stato sbranato!, e da allora non l'ho più visto.
29 If you take this one from me too and any harm comes to him, you wil send my white head down toSheol with grief."	29 Se ora mi porterete via anche questo e gli capitasse una disgrazia, voi fareste scendere i miei bianchi capelli con cordoglio nell'oltretomba!".
30 If I go to your servant my father now, and we do not have the boy with us, he will die as soon as hesees that the boy is not with us, for his heart is bound up with him;	30 E adesso, quando io arriverò dal tuo servo, mio padre, e il giovinetto non sarà con noi, mentre la vita dell'uno è legata alla vita dell'altro,
31 and your servants will have sent your servant our father's white head down to Sheol with grief.	31 avverrà che, appena egli avrà visto che il giovinetto non è con noi, morirà, e i tuoi servi avranno fatto scendere i bianchi capelli del tuo servo, nostro padre, con cordoglio nell'oltretomba.
32 Now your servant went surety to my father for the boy. I said: "If I do not bring him back to you, letme bear the blame before my father al my life."	32 Siccome il tuo servo si è reso garante del giovinetto presso mio padre, dicendo: "Se non te lo ricondurrò, sarò colpevole verso mio padre per tutta la vita",
33 Let your servant stay, then, as my lord's slave in place of the boy, I implore you, and let the boy goback with his brothers.	33 lascia, di grazia, che rimanga il tuo servo invece del giovinetto come schiavo del mio signore, e il giovinetto ritorni lassù con i suoi fratelli!
34 How indeed could I go back to my father and not have the boy with me? I could not bear to see themisery that would overwhelm my father.'	34 Perché, come potrei ritornare da mio padre, mentre il ragazzo non è con me? Che io non veda il dolore che opprimerebbe mio padre!".
