1 Then Joseph instructed his chamberlain as follows: 'Fil these men's sacks with as much food as theycan carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his sack.	1 Alors Joseph donna cet ordre à son intendant: “Remplis de nourriture les sacs de ces hommes, autant qu’ils peuvent en emporter, et remets l’argent de chacun à l’entrée de son sac.
2 And put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one's sack as wel as the money for hisrations.' He did as Joseph had instructed.	2 Puis tu mettras ma coupe, la coupe d’argent, à l’entrée du sac du plus jeune, avec l’argent de son blé.” L’intendant fit donc ce que Joseph avait commandé.
3 At daybreak, the men were sent off with their donkeys.	3 Au lever du jour, on renvoya ces hommes avec leurs ânes.
4 They had gone only a little way from the city, when Joseph said to his chamberlain, 'Away now andfol ow those men. When you catch up with them, say to them, "Why have you repaid good with evil?	4 Ils venaient tout juste de sortir de la ville, ils n’étaient donc pas très loin, lorsque Joseph dit à son intendant: “Lance-toi à la poursuite de ces hommes et, lorsque tu les auras rejoints, tu leur diras: Pourquoi avez-vous rendu le mal pour le bien?
5 Is this not what my lord uses for drinking and also for reading omens? What you have done is wrong."'	5 Pourquoi avez-vous volé la coupe en argent de mon maître? N’est-ce pas celle dans laquelle il boit et avec laquelle il pratique la divination? Ce que vous avez fait là va vous porter malheur.”
6 So when he caught up with them he repeated these words.	6 L’intendant courut donc les rejoindre et leur répéta les paroles de Joseph.
7 They asked him, 'What does my lord mean? Your servants would never think of doing such a thing.	7 Ils lui répondirent: “Pourquoi mon seigneur nous parle-t-il de cette façon? Nous n’avons pas l’habitude d’agir ainsi!
8 Look, we brought you back the money we found in the mouths of our sacks, al the way from Canaan.Are we likely to have stolen silver or gold from your master's house?	8 L’argent que nous avions trouvé sur le dessus de nos sacs, nous l’avons rapporté du pays de Canaan. Comment donc aurions-nous volé de l’argent ou de l’or dans la maison de ton maître?
9 Whichever of your servants is found to have it shall die, and the rest of us shal be slaves of my lord.'	9 Si tu trouves cette coupe sur l’un de tes serviteurs, qu’il soit mis à mort, et que nous devenions les esclaves de mon seigneur.”
10 'Very wel , then, it shal be as you say,' he replied, 'the one on whom it is found shall become myslave, but the rest of you can go free.'	10 Il leur dit: “Soit! je vais vous juger sur vos paroles. Celui chez qui l’on trouvera la coupe sera mon esclave, et vous, vous serez libres.”
11 Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and each opened his own.	11 Sans perdre de temps, chacun déposa à terre son sac de blé et l’ouvrit.
12 He searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest, and found the cup inBenjamin's sack.	12 La fouille commença par l’aîné, et finit par le plus jeune: on trouva la coupe dans le sac de Benjamin.
13 Then they tore their clothes, and when each man had reloaded his donkey they returned to the city.	13 Tous alors déchirèrent leurs vêtements et, après avoir chargé leurs sacs sur leurs ânes, ils retournèrent vers la ville.
14 When Judah and his brothers arrived at Joseph's house he was still there, so they fell on the groundin front of him.	14 Juda et ses frères rentrèrent dans la maison de Joseph; il était là et ils se prosternèrent à terre devant lui.
15 'What do you mean by doing this?' Joseph asked them. 'Did you not know that a man such as I am isa reader of omens?'	15 Joseph leur dit: “Qu’avez-vous fait? Ne savez-vous pas qu’un homme comme moi est capable de tout deviner?”
16 'What can we answer my lord?' Judah replied. 'What can we say? How can we clear ourselves? Godhimself has uncovered your servants' guilt. Here we are then, my lord's slaves, we no less than the one in whose possession the cup was found.'	16 Alors Juda lui dit: “Nous n’avons rien à répondre à mon seigneur. Comment pourrions-nous nous justifier? Dieu a dévoilé la faute de tes serviteurs; nous serons donc les esclaves de mon seigneur, nous et celui dans la main duquel on a trouvé la coupe.”
17 'I could not think of doing such a thing,' he replied. 'The man in whose possession the cup was foundshall be my slave, but you can go back unhindered to your father.'	17 Mais il leur dit: “Dieu me garde de faire cela! Celui sur qui on a trouvé ma coupe sera mon esclave, mais vous, retournez en paix vers votre père!”
18 At this, Judah went up to him and said, 'May it please my lord, let your servant have a word privatelywith my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself.	18 Juda s’avança alors vers lui, et dit: “Je t’en supplie mon seigneur, permets-moi seulement de te dire un mot. Ne te mets pas en colère contre ton serviteur, bien que tu sois comme le Pharaon.
19 My lord questioned his servants, "Have you father or brother?"	19 Mon seigneur, tu nous as interrogés; tu nous as demandé: ‘Avez-vous un père ou un frère?’
20 And we said to my lord, "We have an old father, and a younger brother born of his old age. Hisbrother is dead, so he is the only one by that mother now left, and his father loves him."	20 Nous te l’avons dit, à toi mon seigneur: Nous avons un père qui est vieux. Dans sa vieillesse, il a eu un garçon qui reste seul de sa mère, car son frère est mort. Et cet enfant, son père l’aime.
21 Then you said to your servants, "Bring him down to me, so that I can set eyes on him."	21 Tu as ajouté en nous parlant: ‘Amenez-le moi pour que je le voie!’
22 We replied to my lord, "The boy cannot leave his father. If he leaves him, his father will die."	22 Nous t’avons répondu, à toi mon seigneur: ‘Le garçon ne peut pas quitter son père, s’il manquait à son père, celui-ci en mourrait.’
23 But you said to your servants, "If your youngest brother does not come down with you, you wil notbe admitted to my presence again."	23 “Alors tu nous as dit: ‘Si votre plus jeune frère ne vient pas avec vous, inutile de chercher à me voir.’
24 When we went back to your servant my father, we repeated to him what my lord had said.	24 Aussi, lorsque nous sommes remontés vers notre père, nous lui avons rapporté tes paroles, mon seigneur.
25 So when our father said, "Go back and get us a little food,"	25 Et plus tard, quand notre père nous a dit de retourner pour acheter un peu de nourriture,
26 we said, "We cannot go down. We shall go only if our youngest brother is with us for, unless ouryoungest brother is with us, we shal not be admitted to the man's presence."	26 nous lui avons répété: ‘Nous ne pouvons pas y aller si notre plus jeune frère ne vient pas avec nous. Nous ne partirons pas, car nous ne pourrons revoir cet homme que si notre plus jeune frère est avec nous.’
27 So your servant our father said to us, "You know that my wife bore me two children.	27 Alors mon père nous a dit: ‘Vous savez que ma femme Rachel m’a donné deux garçons.
28 When one of them left me, I supposed that he must have been torn to pieces, and I have never seenhim since.	28 Le premier a disparu et j’ai dit: Il a sûrement été dévoré. Je ne l’ai jamais revu jusqu’à ce jour.
29 If you take this one from me too and any harm comes to him, you wil send my white head down toSheol with grief."	29 Si vous m’enlevez encore celui-là et qu’il lui arrive malheur, vous aurez fait descendre mes cheveux blancs dans la tristesse au séjour des morts.’
30 If I go to your servant my father now, and we do not have the boy with us, he will die as soon as hesees that the boy is not with us, for his heart is bound up with him;	30 “Ainsi, de la vie du garçon dépend celle de mon père. Et si je rentre chez mon père sans le garçon,
31 and your servants will have sent your servant our father's white head down to Sheol with grief.	31 dès qu’il verra que le garçon n’est pas là, il en mourra, et tes serviteurs auront fait descendre les cheveux blancs de notre père, dans la tristesse, au séjour des morts.
32 Now your servant went surety to my father for the boy. I said: "If I do not bring him back to you, letme bear the blame before my father al my life."	32 “Je me suis porté garant du garçon auprès de mon père et je lui ai dit: ‘Si je ne le ramène pas, je serai coupable envers mon père pour toujours.’
33 Let your servant stay, then, as my lord's slave in place of the boy, I implore you, and let the boy goback with his brothers.	33 Maintenant donc, permets que moi, ton serviteur, je reste à la place du garçon comme ton esclave, et que le garçon s’en retourne avec ses frères. Je ne pourrais pas supporter le malheur qui frapperait mon père!”
34 How indeed could I go back to my father and not have the boy with me? I could not bear to see themisery that would overwhelm my father.'
