Genesis 42

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Jacob, seeing that there were supplies to be had in Egypt, said to his sons, 'Why do you keep staringat one another?	1 Giacobbe, avendo sentito che in Egitto si vendeva da mangiare, disse ai suoi figlioli: « Perchè non ve ne date pensiero?
2 I hear', he said, 'that there are supplies in Egypt. Go down and procure some for us there, so that wemay survive and not die.'	2 Ho sentito dire che in Egitto si vende il grano: andate a comprarci il necessario per vivere e non esser consunti dalla fame ».
3 So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to procure grain in Egypt.	3 Così dieci dei fratelli di Giuseppe andarono in Egitto a comprar del frumento;
4 But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers. 'Nothing must happen to him,' hethought.	4 ma Giacobbe ritenne a casa, Beniamino, dopo aver detto ai fratelli di lui: «Non vorrei che gli succedesse qualche disgrazia nel viaggio ».
5 Thus the sons of Israel were among the other people who came to get supplies, there being famine inCanaan.	5 Essi adunque entrarono in Egitto con altra gente che andava a provvedersi, perchè nella terra di Canaan c'era la fame.
6 It was Joseph, as the man in authority over the country, who al ocated the rations to the entirepopulation. So Joseph's brothers went and bowed down before him, their faces touching the ground.	6 Or colui che governava l'Egitto e faceva vendere a suo arbitrio il grano ai popoli era Giuseppe, e quando i suoi fratelli l'adorarono,
7 As soon as Joseph saw his brothers he recognised them. But he did not make himself known to them,and he spoke harshly to them. 'Where have you come from?' he asked. 'From Canaan to get food,' they replied.	7 egli li riconobbe; ma parlando loro con asprezza, come a stranieri, domandò: « Donde venite? » Risposero: « Dalla terra di Canaan, per comprare dei viveri ».
8 Now when Joseph recognised his brothers, but they did not recognise him,	8 E mentre Giuseppe riconosceva i suoi fratelli, essi non riconobbero lui.
9 Joseph remembered the dreams he had had about them, and said to them, 'You are spies. You havecome to discover the country's weak points.'	9 Egli, ricordandosi dei sogni avuti in passato, disse loro: « Voi siete spie: siete venuti per notare i punti più deboli del paese ».
10 'No, my lord,' they said, 'your servants have come to get food.	10 Ed essi a lui: « Signore, non è così: i tuoi servi sono venuti a comprar dei viveri.
11 We are al sons of the same man. We are honest men, your servants are not spies.'	11 Siam tutti figli d'uno stesso uomo: siam gente pacifica, e i tuoi servi non tramano alcun male ».
12 'Oh no,' he replied, 'you have come to discover the country's weak points.'	12 Egli ripose loro: « La cosa sta ben diversamente: voi siete venuti a osservar i luoghi non fortificati di questo paese ».
13 'Your servants were twelve brothers,' they said, 'sons of the same man in Canaan, but the youngestis at present with our father, and the other one is no more.'	13 E quelli: « Noi, tuoi servi, siam dodici fratelli, figli d'uno stesso uomo, nel paese di Canaan: il più piccolo è restato con nostro padre, l'altro non è più ».
14 To which Joseph retorted, 'It is as I said, you are spies.	14 Ma egli replicò: « La cosa sta come v'ho detto: voi siete spie
15 This is the test you are to undergo: as sure as Pharaoh lives you shal not leave unless youryoungest brother comes here.	15 e fin da ora vi metterò alla prova: per la salute di Faraone voi non partirete di qui, finché non venga il vostro fratello più piccolo.
16 Send one of your number to fetch your brother; you others will remain under arrest, so that yourstatements can be tested to see whether or not you are honest. If not, then as sure as Pharaoh lives you arespies.'	16 Mandate uno di voi a prenderlo; ma voi starete in catene finché non sia provato se è vero o falso quanto avete detto; altrimenti, per la vita di Faraone, voi siete spie ».
17 Whereupon, he put them al into custody for three days.	17 E li fece mettere in prigione per tre giorni.
18 On the third day Joseph said to them, 'Do this and you will live, for I am a man who fears God.	18 E il terzo giorno, fattili uscir di prigione, disse: « Fate quello che vi ho detto e sarete salvi; perchè io temo Dio.
19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be detained where you are imprisoned; the rest ofyou, go and take supplies home for your starving families.	19 Se dunque siete gente pacifica, uno di voi fratelli resti legato in prigione, e voi andate a portare alle vostre case il frumento che avete comprato,
20 But you must bring your youngest brother back to me; in this way, what you have said wil beverified, and you wil not have to die!' And this is what they did.	20 e a condurmi il vostro fratello più piccolo, affinchè io possa verificare le vostre parole e non siate condannati a morire ». Essi fecero come egli aveva detto,
21 And they said to one another, 'Clearly, we are being punished for what we did to our brother. Wesaw his deep misery when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen, and now this misery has come home tous.'	21 e si dicevano l'un l'altro: « Ben meritate son queste sofferenze, perchè peccammo contro il nostro fratello, e pur vedendo l'angoscia del suo cuore, quando si raccomandava, non gli demmo ascolto: per questo ci è venuta addosso questa sventura ».
22 Reuben retorted to them, 'Did I not tel you not to wrong the boy? But you would not listen. Nowcomes the accounting.'	22 Ed uno di essi, Ruben, disse: « Non ve lo dissi io: Non peccate contro il fanciullo? Ma voi non mi deste retta. Ecco, il suo sangue ci vien ridomandato ».
23 They did not know that Joseph understood, because there was an interpreter between them.	23 Essi però non sapevano che Giuseppe li capiva, perchè parlava loro per interprete.
24 He turned away from them and wept. When he was able to speak to them again, he chose Simeonout of their number and had him bound while they looked on.	24 Giuseppe si ritirò un momento e pianse, e poi tornò a parlare con essi.
25 Joseph gave the order to fil their panniers with grain, to put back each man's money in his sack, andto give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them.	25 E dopo aver fatto prendere e legare alla loro presenza Simeone, ordinò ai ministri di riempir di grano i loro sacchi, di rimettere il danaro di ciascuno nel suo sacco, e di dar loro anche le provvisioni pel viaggio. E cosi fu fatto.
26 Then they loaded their supplies on their donkeys and went away.	26 Ed essi, caricato il grano sopra i loro asini, se ne andarono.
27 But when they camped for the night, one of them opened his sack to give his donkey some fodderand saw his money -- there it was in the mouth of his sack.	27 Or uno di essi, avendo aperto il sacco per dar da mangiare al suo asino nell'albergo, veduto il danaro alla bocca del sacco,
28 He said to his brothers, 'My money has been put back; here it is, in my sack!' Their hearts sank, andthey looked at one another in panic, saying, 'What is this that God has done to us?'	28 disse ai suoi fratelli: « Mi è stato restituito il danaro: eccolo qui nel sacco ». Allora, stupefatti e turbati, dissero l'uno all'altro: « Che è mai questo che Dio ci ha fatto? »
29 Returning to their father Jacob in Canaan, they gave him a ful report of what had happened to them,	29 E giunti dal loro padre Giacobbe nella terra di Canaan, gli raccontarono tutto quello che era loro accaduto, dicendo:
30 'The man who is lord of the country spoke harshly to us, accusing us of spying on the country.	30 « Il signore di quella terra Ci ha parlato con durezza, prendendoci come spie del paese.
31 We told him, "We are honest men, we are not spies.	31 Noi gli abbiamo detto: Siamo gente pacifica e non pensiamo ad insidie,
32 We were twelve brothers, sons of the same father. One of us is no more, and the youngest is atpresent with our father in Canaan."	32 siamo dodici fratelli, tutti di uno stesso padre; uno non è più, e il minore è restato col padre nella terra di Canaan.
33 But the man who is lord of the country said to us, "This is how I shal know whether you are honest:leave one of your brothers with me. Take supplies for your starving families and be gone,	33 Ed egli ci ha detto: Così proverò se veramente siete gente pacifica: lasciate presso di me uno dei vostri fratelli, e presi i viveri necessari alle vostre famiglie, partite,
34 but bring me back your youngest brother and then I shall know that you are not spies but honestmen. Then I shal give your brother back to you and you wil be free to move about the country." '	34 per condurmi il vostro fratello più piccolo, e dimostratemi che non siete spie, ricuperare così quello che è in prigione ed aver poi il permesso di comprare quello che vorrete ».
35 As they emptied their sacks, each discovered his bag of money in his sack. On seeing their bags ofmoney they were afraid, and so was their father.	35 Ciò detto, vuotarono i sacchi, ed ecco apparire alla bocca del sacco di ciascuno il danaro rinvolto. Tutti ne furono spaventati,
36 Then their father Jacob said to them, 'You are robbing me of my children; Joseph is no more;Simeon is no more; and now you want to take Benjamin. I bear the brunt of al this!'	36 e il padre Giacobbe disse: « Voi mi conducete a restare senza figli: Giuseppe non è più; Simeone è in catene, ed ora mi volete togliere anche Beniamino. Su di me piombano tutte queste sciagure! »
37 Then Reuben said to his father, 'You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you.Put him in my care and I will bring him back to you.'	37 E Ruben gli disse: «Se non te lo riconduco, fa' morire i miei due figlioli: affidalo a me, e te lo restituirò».
38 But he replied, 'My son is not going down with you, for now his brother is dead he is the only one left.If any harm came to him on the journey you are undertaking, you would send my white head down to Sheol withgrief!'	38 Ma egli rispose: « No, il mio figliolo non verrà con voi: il suo fratello è morto, ed egli è rimasto solo; se gli accadrà qualche disgrazia nella terra ove andate, farete scendere con dolore la mia canizie nel soggiorno dei morti ».
