Genesis 42

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Jacob, seeing that there were supplies to be had in Egypt, said to his sons, 'Why do you keep staringat one another?	1 Or Giacobbe seppe che in Egitto vi era del grano; perciò disse ai suoi figli: "Perché rimanete a guardarvi l'un l'altro?".
2 I hear', he said, 'that there are supplies in Egypt. Go down and procure some for us there, so that wemay survive and not die.'	2 E continuò: "Ecco: ho sentito dire che vi è grano in Egitto. Andate laggiù e comperate di là grano, affinché noi si possa vivere e non si debba morire".
3 So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to procure grain in Egypt.	3 Allora i dieci fratelli di Giuseppe scesero in Egitto per comperare grano.
4 But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers. 'Nothing must happen to him,' hethought.	4 Ma quanto a Beniamino, fratello di Giuseppe, Giacobbe non lo mandò con i fratelli, perché diceva: "Che non gli succeda qualche disgrazia!".
5 Thus the sons of Israel were among the other people who came to get supplies, there being famine inCanaan.	5 Arrivarono dunque i figli di Israele per comperare il grano, in mezzo agli altri arrivati, perché nella terra di Canaan vi era la carestia.
6 It was Joseph, as the man in authority over the country, who al ocated the rations to the entirepopulation. So Joseph's brothers went and bowed down before him, their faces touching the ground.	6 Or Giuseppe era il governatore del paese ed era lui che vendeva il grano a tutto il popolo del paese. Perciò i fratelli di Giuseppe vennero da lui e si prostrarono davanti a lui con la faccia per terra.
7 As soon as Joseph saw his brothers he recognised them. But he did not make himself known to them,and he spoke harshly to them. 'Where have you come from?' he asked. 'From Canaan to get food,' they replied.	7 Giuseppe vide i suoi fratelli e li riconobbe, ma fece lo straniero con loro, anzi disse loro parole dure. Domandò loro: "Da dove siete venuti?". Risposero: "Dalla terra di Canaan, per comperare viveri".
8 Now when Joseph recognised his brothers, but they did not recognise him,	8 Giuseppe riconobbe dunque i suoi fratelli, mentre essi non lo riconobbero.
9 Joseph remembered the dreams he had had about them, and said to them, 'You are spies. You havecome to discover the country's weak points.'	9 Allora Giuseppe ricordò i sogni che aveva avuto a loro riguardo e disse loro: "Voi siete spie! Siete venuti per vedere i punti deboli del paese".
10 'No, my lord,' they said, 'your servants have come to get food.	10 Gli risposero: "No, signore; ma i tuoi servi sono venuti per comperar viveri.
11 We are al sons of the same man. We are honest men, your servants are not spies.'	11 Noi siamo tutti figli di un unico uomo. Noi siamo sinceri. I tuoi servi non sono spie!".
12 'Oh no,' he replied, 'you have come to discover the country's weak points.'	12 Ma egli disse loro: "No; sono i punti deboli del paese che siete venuti a vedere!".
13 'Your servants were twelve brothers,' they said, 'sons of the same man in Canaan, but the youngestis at present with our father, and the other one is no more.'	13 Allora essi dissero: "Dodici sono i tuoi servi, siamo fratelli, figli di un unico uomo, nella terra di Canaan; ecco, il più piccolo è adesso presso nostro padre, e uno non c'è più!".
14 To which Joseph retorted, 'It is as I said, you are spies.	14 Giuseppe disse loro: "La cosa sta come vi ho detto: voi siete spie.
15 This is the test you are to undergo: as sure as Pharaoh lives you shal not leave unless youryoungest brother comes here.	15 Perciò sarete messi alla prova: com'è vero che vive il faraone, non uscirete di qui se non quando sarà venuto qui il vostro fratello più piccolo.
16 Send one of your number to fetch your brother; you others will remain under arrest, so that yourstatements can be tested to see whether or not you are honest. If not, then as sure as Pharaoh lives you arespies.'	16 Mandate uno di voi a prendere vostro fratello; quanto a voi, rimarrete prigionieri. Siano così messe alla prova le vostre parole, se la verità è dalla vostra parte. Se no, com'è vero che vive il faraone, voi siete spie!".
17 Whereupon, he put them al into custody for three days.	17 Poi li mise tutti insieme in residenza forzata per tre giorni.
18 On the third day Joseph said to them, 'Do this and you will live, for I am a man who fears God.	18 Al terzo giorno Giuseppe disse loro: "Fate così, e sarete salvi: anch'io temo Dio!
19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be detained where you are imprisoned; the rest ofyou, go and take supplies home for your starving families.	19 Se voi siete sinceri, uno di voi fratelli resti prigioniero nella vostra residenza forzata e voialtri andate a portare il grano necessario alle vostre case.
20 But you must bring your youngest brother back to me; in this way, what you have said wil beverified, and you wil not have to die!' And this is what they did.	20 Poi mi condurrete qui il vostro fratello più piccolo, affinché le vostre parole siano verificate e non moriate". Essi fecero così.
21 And they said to one another, 'Clearly, we are being punished for what we did to our brother. Wesaw his deep misery when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen, and now this misery has come home tous.'	21 Allora si dissero l'un l'altro: "Certo su di noi grava la colpa nei riguardi di nostro fratello, perché noi che vedemmo l'angoscia dell'anima sua quando ci supplicava, non lo ascoltammo. E' per questo che ci è venuta addosso quest'angoscia".
22 Reuben retorted to them, 'Did I not tel you not to wrong the boy? But you would not listen. Nowcomes the accounting.'	22 Ruben prese a dir loro: "Non ve lo dissi io: non peccate contro il ragazzo? Ma non mi deste ascolto. Ed ecco che ora ci si domanda conto del suo sangue".
23 They did not know that Joseph understood, because there was an interpreter between them.	23 Essi non sapevano che Giuseppe li capiva, perché tra lui e loro vi era l'interprete.
24 He turned away from them and wept. When he was able to speak to them again, he chose Simeonout of their number and had him bound while they looked on.	24 Allora egli si allontanò da loro e pianse. Poi tornò presso di loro e riprese a parlare con loro. Scelse tra loro Simeone e lo fece incatenare sotto i loro occhi.
25 Joseph gave the order to fil their panniers with grain, to put back each man's money in his sack, andto give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them.	25 Poi Giuseppe comandò di riempire di grano i loro sacchi e di rimettere i pezzi d'argento di ognuno nel proprio sacco e di dare loro provvigioni per il viaggio. E così venne fatto.
26 Then they loaded their supplies on their donkeys and went away.	26 Essi caricarono il loro grano sui propri asini e partirono di là.
27 But when they camped for the night, one of them opened his sack to give his donkey some fodderand saw his money -- there it was in the mouth of his sack.	27 Ora, nell'albergo, uno di loro aprì il suo sacco per dare del foraggio al suo asino, e vide il proprio denaro che stava alla bocca del sacco.
28 He said to his brothers, 'My money has been put back; here it is, in my sack!' Their hearts sank, andthey looked at one another in panic, saying, 'What is this that God has done to us?'	28 E disse ai suoi fratelli: "Mi è stato restituito il mio danaro: eccolo qui nel mio sacco!". Allora si sentirono mancare il cuore e tremarono, dicendosi l'un l'altro: "Che è mai questo che Dio ci ha fatto?".
29 Returning to their father Jacob in Canaan, they gave him a ful report of what had happened to them,	29 Poi arrivarono da Giacobbe, loro padre, nella terra di Canaan e gli riferirono tutto quello ch'era loro capitato:
30 'The man who is lord of the country spoke harshly to us, accusing us of spying on the country.	30 "Quell'uomo che è signore dell'Egitto ci ha detto parole dure e ci ha trattato come spie del paese.
31 We told him, "We are honest men, we are not spies.	31 Allora gli dicemmo: "Noi siamo sinceri; non siamo spie!
32 We were twelve brothers, sons of the same father. One of us is no more, and the youngest is atpresent with our father in Canaan."	32 Noi siamo in dodici fratelli, figli di nostro padre: uno non c'è più e il più piccolo è adesso presso nostro padre nella terra di Canaan".
33 But the man who is lord of the country said to us, "This is how I shal know whether you are honest:leave one of your brothers with me. Take supplies for your starving families and be gone,	33 Ma l'uomo, signore del paese, ci disse: "E' così che io conoscerò se voi siete sinceri: lasciate qui con me uno di voi fratelli, prendete il grano per le vostre case e andate.
34 but bring me back your youngest brother and then I shall know that you are not spies but honestmen. Then I shal give your brother back to you and you wil be free to move about the country." '	34 Poi conducetemi il vostro fratello più piccolo, affinché sappia che non siete spie, ma che siete sinceri; io vi renderò vostro fratello e voi potrete percorrere il paese in lungo e in largo".
35 As they emptied their sacks, each discovered his bag of money in his sack. On seeing their bags ofmoney they were afraid, and so was their father.	35 Or mentre vuotavano i loro sacchi, ecco che la borsa del denaro di ciascuno stava nel proprio sacco. Quando videro, essi e il loro padre, le loro borse di denaro, furono presi dal timore.
36 Then their father Jacob said to them, 'You are robbing me of my children; Joseph is no more;Simeon is no more; and now you want to take Benjamin. I bear the brunt of al this!'	36 E il loro padre Giacobbe disse loro: "Voi mi avete privato dei figli! Giuseppe non c'è più; Simeone non c'è più e Beniamino me lo volete prendere. E' su di me che tutto questo ricade!".
37 Then Reuben said to his father, 'You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you.Put him in my care and I will bring him back to you.'	37 Allora Ruben disse a suo padre: "Tu potrai far morire i miei due figli, se non te lo ricondurrò. Affidalo a me, e io te lo restituirò".
38 But he replied, 'My son is not going down with you, for now his brother is dead he is the only one left.If any harm came to him on the journey you are undertaking, you would send my white head down to Sheol withgrief!'	38 Ma egli rispose: "Il mio figliolo non scenderà laggiù con voi, perché il suo fratello è morto ed egli è rimasto solo. Se gli capitasse una disgrazia durante il viaggio che volete fare, voi fareste discendere i miei bianchi capelli con cordoglio nell'oltretomba".
