NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Jacob, seeing that there were supplies to be had in Egypt, said to his sons, 'Why do you keep staringat one another?	1 Jacob apprit qu’il y avait du blé en Égypte; il dit à ses fils: “Pourquoi restez-vous à vous regarder les uns les autres?”
2 I hear', he said, 'that there are supplies in Egypt. Go down and procure some for us there, so that wemay survive and not die.'	2 Il ajouta: “J’ai entendu dire qu’il y a du blé en Égypte. Descendez-y donc, achetez-nous du blé, c’est une question de vie ou de mort.”
3 So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to procure grain in Egypt.	3 Les frères de Joseph descendirent donc à dix pour acheter du blé en Égypte.
4 But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers. 'Nothing must happen to him,' hethought.	4 Jacob n’avait pas envoyé Benjamin, le frère de Joseph, avec ses frères, car il se disait: “Il ne faudrait pas qu’il lui arrive malheur!”
5 Thus the sons of Israel were among the other people who came to get supplies, there being famine inCanaan.	5 Les fils d’Israël arrivèrent donc avec tous ceux qui entraient dans le pays pour acheter du blé, car la famine régnait en Canaan.
6 It was Joseph, as the man in authority over the country, who al ocated the rations to the entirepopulation. So Joseph's brothers went and bowed down before him, their faces touching the ground.	6 Comme Joseph était le premier ministre du pays, c’est lui qui vendait le blé à tous les gens du pays. Quand les frères de Joseph arrivèrent, ils se prosternèrent devant lui la face contre terre.
7 As soon as Joseph saw his brothers he recognised them. But he did not make himself known to them,and he spoke harshly to them. 'Where have you come from?' he asked. 'From Canaan to get food,' they replied.	7 Joseph vit ses frères et les reconnut, mais il ne se fit pas reconnaître par eux. Il leur parla même sévèrement: “D’où venez-vous?” leur dit-il. “De Canaan, répondirent-ils, pour acheter du blé et avoir de quoi manger.”
8 Now when Joseph recognised his brothers, but they did not recognise him,	8 Joseph avait reconnu ses frères, mais eux ne l’avaient pas reconnu.
9 Joseph remembered the dreams he had had about them, and said to them, 'You are spies. You havecome to discover the country's weak points.'	9 Joseph se souvint alors des songes qu’il avait eus à leur sujet. Il leur dit: “Vous êtes des espions! C’est pour voir les secrets du pays que vous êtes venus.”
10 'No, my lord,' they said, 'your servants have come to get food.	10 “Non, mon seigneur, répondirent-ils, tes serviteurs sont venus pour acheter du blé et pouvoir manger.
11 We are al sons of the same man. We are honest men, your servants are not spies.'	11 Nous sommes tous fils d’un même père, nous disons la vérité. Tes serviteurs ne sont pas des espions.”
12 'Oh no,' he replied, 'you have come to discover the country's weak points.'	12 Il leur dit: “Non! C’est pour voir les secrets du pays que vous êtes venus!”
13 'Your servants were twelve brothers,' they said, 'sons of the same man in Canaan, but the youngestis at present with our father, and the other one is no more.'	13 Ils répondirent: “Tes serviteurs étaient douze frères, fils d’un même père en Canaan. Le plus petit est avec notre père en ce moment, et l’autre n’est plus.”
14 To which Joseph retorted, 'It is as I said, you are spies.	14 Joseph leur dit: “J’ai dit que vous êtes des espions!
15 This is the test you are to undergo: as sure as Pharaoh lives you shal not leave unless youryoungest brother comes here.	15 Mais je vais vous mettre à l’épreuve. Par la vie du Pharaon, vous ne partirez pas d’ici avant que votre plus jeune frère ne soit venu.
16 Send one of your number to fetch your brother; you others will remain under arrest, so that yourstatements can be tested to see whether or not you are honest. If not, then as sure as Pharaoh lives you arespies.'	16 Envoyez l’un d’entre vous chercher votre frère, et durant ce temps vous resterez en prison pour que l’on vérifie vos paroles; on verra bien si vous dites la vérité. Sinon, aussi vrai que Pharaon est vivant, vous n’êtes que des espions.”
17 Whereupon, he put them al into custody for three days.	17 Il les enferma donc pendant trois jours.
18 On the third day Joseph said to them, 'Do this and you will live, for I am a man who fears God.	18 Le troisième jour, Joseph leur dit: “Je veux que vous puissiez vivre, car je crains Dieu.
19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be detained where you are imprisoned; the rest ofyou, go and take supplies home for your starving families.	19 Si vous avez dit la vérité, qu’un seul d’entre vous reste enfermé ici dans la prison, et les autres s’en iront avec le blé pour que vos familles ne connaissent pas la faim.
20 But you must bring your youngest brother back to me; in this way, what you have said wil beverified, and you wil not have to die!' And this is what they did.	20 Puis vous ramènerez votre plus jeune frère afin que l’on vérifie vos paroles: ainsi vous ne mourrez pas.” On fit ainsi.
21 And they said to one another, 'Clearly, we are being punished for what we did to our brother. Wesaw his deep misery when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen, and now this misery has come home tous.'	21 Ils se disaient l’un à l’autre: “Hélas! Nous sommes en train de payer à cause de notre frère; nous avons vu son angoisse quand il nous suppliait et nous avons refusé de l’entendre. C’est pour cela que tout ce malheur nous arrive.”
22 Reuben retorted to them, 'Did I not tel you not to wrong the boy? But you would not listen. Nowcomes the accounting.'	22 Alors Ruben leur dit: “Ne vous avais-je pas avertis: Ne péchez pas contre cet enfant! Mais vous avez refusé de m’entendre, et aujourd’hui, nous payons pour sa mort.”
23 They did not know that Joseph understood, because there was an interpreter between them.	23 Ils ne savaient pas que Joseph comprenait tout, car il leur avait parlé avec un interprète.
24 He turned away from them and wept. When he was able to speak to them again, he chose Simeonout of their number and had him bound while they looked on.	24 Joseph s’éloigna d’eux pour pleurer. Puis il revint vers eux, et de nouveau leur parla. Il prit l’un d’eux, Siméon, et le fit enchaîner sous leurs yeux.
25 Joseph gave the order to fil their panniers with grain, to put back each man's money in his sack, andto give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them.	25 Ensuite, Joseph ordonna de remplir de blé leurs sacs, de remettre l’argent de chacun dans son sac, et de leur donner des provisions pour la route. C’est ce que l’on fit.
26 Then they loaded their supplies on their donkeys and went away.	26 Ils emportèrent donc leur blé sur leurs ânes et ils s’en retournèrent.
27 But when they camped for the night, one of them opened his sack to give his donkey some fodderand saw his money -- there it was in the mouth of his sack.	27 À la halte de la nuit, l’un deux ouvrit son sac pour donner du fourrage à son âne, et il aperçut son argent à l’entrée de son sac.
28 He said to his brothers, 'My money has been put back; here it is, in my sack!' Their hearts sank, andthey looked at one another in panic, saying, 'What is this that God has done to us?'	28 Il dit à ses frères: “On m’a rendu mon argent, il est là de nouveau dans mon sac!” Très inquiets, ils se regardèrent alors l’un l’autre en tremblant. “Qu’est-ce que Dieu nous a fait là?” dirent-ils.
29 Returning to their father Jacob in Canaan, they gave him a ful report of what had happened to them,	29 Quand ils arrivèrent en Canaan, près de leur père Jacob, ils lui racontèrent toutes leurs aventures:
30 'The man who is lord of the country spoke harshly to us, accusing us of spying on the country.	30 “L’homme qui dirige le pays nous a parlé sévèrement et nous a traités d’espions.
31 We told him, "We are honest men, we are not spies.	31 Nous lui avons répondu: ‘Nous disons la vérité, nous ne sommes pas des espions.
32 We were twelve brothers, sons of the same father. One of us is no more, and the youngest is atpresent with our father in Canaan."	32 Nous étions douze frères, fils d’un même père. L’un d’entre nous n’est plus, et le plus jeune est en ce moment avec notre père en Canaan.’
33 But the man who is lord of the country said to us, "This is how I shal know whether you are honest:leave one of your brothers with me. Take supplies for your starving families and be gone,	33 Alors ce maître du pays nous a dit: ‘C’est bien là que je vais voir si vous dites la vérité: laissez près de moi l’un d’entre vous, prenez de quoi mettre vos familles à l’abri de la famine, et partez!
34 but bring me back your youngest brother and then I shall know that you are not spies but honestmen. Then I shal give your brother back to you and you wil be free to move about the country." '	34 Puis vous me ramènerez votre plus jeune frère, et je verrai que vous n’êtes pas des espions mais que vous dites bien la vérité. Je vous rendrai votre frère et vous pourrez circuler librement dans le pays.’ ”
35 As they emptied their sacks, each discovered his bag of money in his sack. On seeing their bags ofmoney they were afraid, and so was their father.	35 Or, comme ils vidaient leurs sacs, chacun trouva dans son sac une bourse avec son argent. Quand ils virent, et leur père aussi, les bourses avec leur argent, ils eurent peur.
36 Then their father Jacob said to them, 'You are robbing me of my children; Joseph is no more;Simeon is no more; and now you want to take Benjamin. I bear the brunt of al this!'	36 Leur père Jacob leur dit alors: “Vous me privez de mes enfants: Joseph n’est plus, Siméon n’est plus, et vous voulez me prendre Benjamin! C’est sur moi que retombe tout cela.”
37 Then Reuben said to his father, 'You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you.Put him in my care and I will bring him back to you.'	37 Ruben dit à son père: “Tu pourras mettre à mort mes deux fils, si je ne te ramène pas Benjamin. Confie-le moi, et je le ferai revenir près de toi.”
38 But he replied, 'My son is not going down with you, for now his brother is dead he is the only one left.If any harm came to him on the journey you are undertaking, you would send my white head down to Sheol withgrief!'	38 Jacob lui répondit: “Mon fils ne descendra pas avec vous, car son frère est mort et il reste seul. S’il lui arrivait malheur au cours de votre aventure, vous feriez descendre mes cheveux blancs dans la tristesse au séjour des morts.”
