1 Samuel said to Saul: "It was I the LORD sent to anoint you king over his people Israel. Now, therefore, listen to the message of the LORD.	1 Un giorno Samuele disse a Saul: «Jahvè mi mandò altra volta a ungerti re di Israele suo popolo: ascolta dunque anche ora la voce di Jahvè.
2 This is what the LORD of hosts has to say: 'I will punish what Amalek did to Israel when he barred his way as he was coming up from Egypt.	2 Così dice Jahvè degli eserciti: “Intendo punire ciò che Amalec ha fatto a Israele, perché si è opposto sulla via quando usciva dall’Egitto.
3 Go, now, attack Amalek, and deal with him and all that he has under the ban. Do not spare him, but kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and asses.'"	3 Perciò va’, colpisci Amalec, votalo all’anatema insieme con tutto ciò che gli appartiene né risparmiare alcuna cosa di lui: uccidi uomini e donne, bimbi e lattanti, buoi e pecore, cammelli e asini”».
4 Saul alerted the soldiers, and at Telaim reviewed two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah.	4 Saul, convocò il popolo e lo passò in rassegna a Telam: ...mila fanti e diecimila uomini di Giuda.
5 Saul went to the city of Amalek, and after setting an ambush in the wadi,	5 Poi, portatosi fin presso una città di Amalec, tese un agguato nella valle.
6 warned the Kenites: "Come! Leave Amalek and withdraw, that I may not have to destroy you with them, for you were kind to the Israelites when they came up from Egypt." After the Kenites left,	6 Disse poi ai Keniti: «Andate, ritiratevi da Amalec, perché io non abbia a sterminarvi insieme con lui, poiché voi avete usato benevolenza ai figli di Israele, quando uscivano dall’Egitto». I Keniti si allontanarono da Amalec.
7 Saul routed Amalek from Havilah to the approaches of Shur, on the frontier of Egypt.	7 Allora Saul percosse Amalec da Havila fin presso Shur, che è di fronte all’Egitto.
8 He took Agag, king of Amalek, alive, but on the rest of the people he put into effect the ban of destruction by the sword.	8 Prese Vivo Agag, re di Amalec, e votò tutta la gente all'anatema, passandola a fil di spada.
9 He and his troops spared Agag and the best of the fat sheep and oxen, and the lambs. They refused to carry out the doom on anything that was worthwhile, dooming only what was worthless and of no account.	9 Però Saul e il popolo risparmiarono Agag e il meglio del bestiame minuto e grosso, cioè gli animali grassi e gli agnelli; in una parola tutto il meglio, né vollero votarlo all’anatema; votarono invece all’anatema tutto il bestiame disprezzabile e di rifiuto.
10 Then the LORD spoke to Samuel:	10 Allora la parola di Jahvè fu rivolta a Samuele:
11 "I regret having made Saul king, for he has turned from me and has not kept my command." At this Samuel grew angry and cried out to the LORD all night.	11 «Mi pento di aver messo sul trono Saul come re, poiché si è allontanato da me e non ha eseguito i miei ordini!» Samuele, vivamente colpito, gridò a Jahvè tutta la notte.
12 Early in the morning he went to meet Saul, but was informed that Saul had gone to Carmel, where he erected a trophy in his own honor, and that on his return he had passed on and gone down to Gilgal.	12 Alzatosi poi per andare incontro a Saul all’alba, gli fu annunciato: «Saul è andato a Charmel; ed ecco, si è innalzato un cippo; quindi, dopo aver ripreso il cammino ed essere passato oltre, è sceso a Galgala».
13 When Samuel came to him, Saul greeted him: "The LORD bless you! I have kept the command of the LORD."	13 Allora Samuele andò da Saul e Saul gli disse: «Sii benedetto da Jahvè! Ho eseguito l’ordine di Jahvè».
14 But Samuel asked, "What, then, is the meaning of this bleating of sheep that comes to my ears, and the lowing of oxen that I hear?"	14 Samuele rispose: «E che cosa è questo belare di greggi ai miei orecchi e questo muggire di armenti che io odo?»
15 Saul replied: "They were brought from Amalek. The men spared the best sheep and oxen to sacrifice to the LORD, your God; but we have carried out the ban on the rest."	15 Disse Saul: «Li hanno portati via da Amalec, poiché il popolo ha risparmiato il meglio del bestiame minuto e grosso, per offrir sacrifici a Jahvè tuo Dio; il resto lo abbiamo votato all’anatema».
16 Samuel said to Saul: "Stop! Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night." "Speak!" he replied.	16 Allora Samuele disse a Saul: «Basta! Io devo annunciarti ciò che Jahvè ha detto a me questa notte!» Gli rispose: «Parla».
17 Samuel then said: "Though little in your own esteem, are you not leader of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king of Israel	17 Samuele continuò: «Non è forse vero che, sebbene tu fossi piccolo ai tuoi stessi occhi, sei divenuto capo delle tribù di Israele? Jahvè ti ha unto re di Israele!
18 and sent you on a mission, saying, 'Go and put the sinful Amalekites under a ban of destruction. Fight against them until you have exterminated them.'	18 Ebbene Jahvè, ti ha messo sulla via dicendoti: “Va’, vota all’anatema quei peccatori di Amaleciti e combattili finché tu non li abbia finiti!”.
19 Why then have you disobeyed the LORD? You have pounced on the spoil, thus displeasing the LORD."	19 Perché dunque non hai ascoltato la voce di Jahvè? Ti sei gettato sul bottino e hai fatto ciò che agli occhi di Jahvè era male!»
20 Saul answered Samuel: "I did indeed obey the LORD and fulfill the mission on which the LORD sent me. I have brought back Agag, and I have destroyed Amalek under the ban.	20 Saul disse a Samuele: «Io ho ascoltato la voce di Jahvè e ho camminato per la via in cui egli mi ha messo: ho condotto via Agag, re di Amalec, ma ho votato gli Amaleciti all’anatema!
21 But from the spoil the men took sheep and oxen, the best of what had been banned, to sacrifice to the LORD their God in Gilgal."	21 Però il popolo ha preso, tra la preda, bestiame minuto e grosso quale primizia dell’anatema, per offrirne sacrifici a Jahvè tuo Dio a Galgala».
22 But Samuel said: "Does the LORD so delight in holocausts and sacrifices as in obedience to the command of the LORD? Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission than the fat of rams.	22 Samuele replicò: «Forse Jahvè ‘si compiace di olocausti e di sacrifici come dell’obbedienza alla sua voce? Ecco, l’obbedienza è più di un sacrificio; la docilità più del grasso dei montoni!
23 For a sin like divination is rebellion, and presumption is the crime of idolatry. Because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he, too, has rejected you as ruler."	23 In verità, peccato di divinazione è l’ostinazione, iniquità e terafim la testardaggine! Poiché hai rigettato la parola di Jahvè, egli ti rigetta dal regno!»
24 Saul replied to Samuel: "I have sinned, for I have disobeyed the command of the LORD and your instructions. In my fear of the people, I did what they said.	24 Saul allora disse a Samuele: «Ho peccato, poiché ho trasgredito l’ordine di Jahvè e le tue parole. Ma è perché ho avuto paura del popolo e ho acconsentito alla loro richiesta.
25 Now forgive my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD."	25 Dunque, sopporta il mio peccato e ritorna con me, affinché io possa adorare Jahvè!»
26 But Samuel said to Saul, "I will not return with you, because you rejected the command of the LORD and the LORD rejects you as king of Israel."	26 Ma Samuele gli rispose: «Non ritornerò con te. Poiché hai rigettato la parola di Jahvè, Jahvè ti ha rigettato così che tu non sia più re su Israele».
27 As Samuel turned to go, Saul seized a loose end of his mantle, and it tore off.	27 E si voltò per andarsene. Saul allora afferrò un lembo del mantello, che si strappò.
28 So Samuel said to him: "The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.	28 Samuele gli disse: «Jahvè ha strappato oggi da te il regno di Israele e lo ha dato a un altro, migliore di te!
29 The Glory of Israel neither retracts nor repents, for he is not man that he should repent."	29 Di più, la Gloria di Israele non mente né muta; non è un uomo lui perché possa mutare!»
30 But he answered: "I have sinned, yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel. Return with me that I may worship the LORD your God."	30 Rispose Saul: «Ho peccato! Ora però da’ segno di onorarmi al cospetto degli anziani del mio popolo e al cospetto di Israele! Torna con me, affinché io possa adorare Jahvè tuo Dio!»
31 And so Samuel returned with him, and Saul worshiped the LORD.	31 Allora Samuele tornò dietro Saul e Saul si prostrò davanti a Jahvè.
32 Afterward Samuel commanded, "Bring Agag, king of Amalek, to me." Agag came to him struggling and saying, "So it is bitter death!"	32 Poi Samuele disse: «Conducetemi Agag, re di Amalec». Agag venne a lui tutto allegro, dicendo: «Certo è passata l’amarezza della morte!»
33 And Samuel said, "As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women." Then he cut Agag down before the LORD in Gilgal.	33 Ma Samuele disse: «Come la tua spada ha privato dei figli le donne, così tua madre andrà tra le donne priva di figli!» Samuele sgozzò Agag alla presenza di Jahvè a Galgala.
34 Samuel departed for Ramah, while Saul went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul.	34 Quindi se ne andò a Rama, mentre Saul salì alla sua casa in Gabaa di Saul
35 Never again, as long as he lived, did Samuel see Saul. Yet he grieved over Saul, because the LORD regretted having made him king of Israel.	35 né Samuele vide più Saul fino al giorno della sua morte.
