NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Samuel said to Saul: "It was I the LORD sent to anoint you king over his people Israel. Now, therefore, listen to the message of the LORD.1 Et dixit Samuel ad Saul: “ Me misit Dominus, ut unge rem te in regem super populum eius Israel. Nunc ergo audi vocem Domini.
This is what the LORD of hosts has to say: 'I will punish what Amalek did to Israel when he barred his way as he was coming up from Egypt.2 Haec dicit Dominus exercituum: “Recensui, quaecumque fecit Amalec Israeli, quomodo restitit ei in via, cum ascenderet de Aegypto.
Go, now, attack Amalek, and deal with him and all that he has under the ban. Do not spare him, but kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and asses.'"3 Nunc igitur vade et demolire Amalec et percute anathemate universa eius; non parcas ei, sed interfice a viro usque ad mulierem et parvulum atque lactantem, bovem et ovem, camelum et asinum” ”.
Saul alerted the soldiers, and at Telaim reviewed two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah.4 Convocavit itaque Saul populum et recensuit eos in Telem: ducenta milia peditum et decem milia virorum Iudae.
Saul went to the city of Amalek, and after setting an ambush in the wadi,5 Cumque venisset Saul usque ad civitatem Amalec, tetendit insidias in torrente
warned the Kenites: "Come! Leave Amalek and withdraw, that I may not have to destroy you with them, for you were kind to the Israelites when they came up from Egypt." After the Kenites left,6 dixitque Saul Cinaeo: “ Abite, recedite atque descendite ab Amalec, ne forte perdam te cum eo; tu enim fecisti misericordiam cum omnibus filiis Israel, cum ascenderent de Aegypto ”. Et recessit Cinaeus de medio Amalec.
Saul routed Amalek from Havilah to the approaches of Shur, on the frontier of Egypt.7 Percussitque Saul Amalec ab Hevila usque ad Sur, quae est e regione Aegypti.
He took Agag, king of Amalek, alive, but on the rest of the people he put into effect the ban of destruction by the sword.8 Et apprehendit Agag regem Amalec vivum; omne autem vulgus interfecit in ore gladii.
He and his troops spared Agag and the best of the fat sheep and oxen, and the lambs. They refused to carry out the doom on anything that was worthwhile, dooming only what was worthless and of no account.9 Et pepercit Saul et populus Agag et optimis gregibus ovium et armentorum, pinguibus scilicet pecoribus et agnis et universis, quae pulchra erant, nec voluerunt disperdere ea; quidquid vero vile fuit et reprobum, hoc demoliti sunt.
Then the LORD spoke to Samuel:10 Factum est autem verbum Domini ad Samuel dicens:
"I regret having made Saul king, for he has turned from me and has not kept my command." At this Samuel grew angry and cried out to the LORD all night.11 “ Paenitet me quod constituerim Saul regem, quia dereliquit me et verba mea opere non implevit ”. Contristatusque est Samuel et clamavit ad Dominum tota nocte.
Early in the morning he went to meet Saul, but was informed that Saul had gone to Carmel, where he erected a trophy in his own honor, and that on his return he had passed on and gone down to Gilgal.12 Cumque de nocte surrexisset Samuel, ut iret ad Saul mane, nuntiatum est Samueli quod venisset Saul in Carmel et erexisset sibi trophaeum et reversus transisset descendissetque in Galgala.
When Samuel came to him, Saul greeted him: "The LORD bless you! I have kept the command of the LORD."13 Et cum venisset Samuel ad Saul, dixit ei Saul: “ Benedictus tu Domino; implevi verbum Domini ”.
But Samuel asked, "What, then, is the meaning of this bleating of sheep that comes to my ears, and the lowing of oxen that I hear?"14 Dixitque Samuel: “ Et quae est haec vox gregum, quae resonat in auribus meis, et armentorum, quam ego audio? ”.
Saul replied: "They were brought from Amalek. The men spared the best sheep and oxen to sacrifice to the LORD, your God; but we have carried out the ban on the rest."15 Et ait Saul: “ De Amalec adduxerunt ea; pepercit enim populus melioribus ovibus et armentis, ut immolarentur Domino Deo tuo; reliqua vero occidimus ”.
Samuel said to Saul: "Stop! Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night." "Speak!" he replied.16 Dixit autem Samuel ad Saul: “ Sine me, et indicabo tibi, quae locutus sit Dominus ad me nocte ”. Dixitque ei: “ Loquere ”.
Samuel then said: "Though little in your own esteem, are you not leader of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king of Israel17 Et ait Samuel: “ Nonne, cum parvulus esses in oculis tuis, caput in tribubus Israel factus es? Unxitque te Dominus regem super Israel
and sent you on a mission, saying, 'Go and put the sinful Amalekites under a ban of destruction. Fight against them until you have exterminated them.'18 et misit te Dominus in viam et ait: “ Vade et interfice peccatores Amalec et pugnabis contra eos usque ad internecionem eorum ”.
Why then have you disobeyed the LORD? You have pounced on the spoil, thus displeasing the LORD."19 Quare ergo non audisti vocem Domini, sed versus ad praedam es et fecisti malum in oculis Domini? ”.
Saul answered Samuel: "I did indeed obey the LORD and fulfill the mission on which the LORD sent me. I have brought back Agag, and I have destroyed Amalek under the ban.20 Et ait Saul ad Samuelem: “ Immo audivi vocem Domini et ambulavi in via, per quam misit me Dominus; et adduxi Agag regem Amalec et Amalec interfeci.
But from the spoil the men took sheep and oxen, the best of what had been banned, to sacrifice to the LORD their God in Gilgal."21 Tulit autem populus de praeda oves et boves, primitias eorum, quae caesa sunt, ut immolet Domino Deo tuo in Galgalis ”.
But Samuel said: "Does the LORD so delight in holocausts and sacrifices as in obedience to the command of the LORD? Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission than the fat of rams.22 Et ait Samuel: “ Numquid vult Dominus holocausta aut victimas et non potius ut oboediatur voci Domini? Melior est enim oboedientia quam victimae, et auscultare magis quam offerre adipem arietum.
For a sin like divination is rebellion, and presumption is the crime of idolatry. Because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he, too, has rejected you as ruler."23 Vere peccatum hariolandi est repugnare, et scelus idololatriae nolle acquiescere: pro eo ergo quod abiecisti sermonem Domini, abiecit te, ne sis rex ”.
Saul replied to Samuel: "I have sinned, for I have disobeyed the command of the LORD and your instructions. In my fear of the people, I did what they said.24 Dixitque Saul ad Samuelem: “ Peccavi, quia praevaricatus sum sermonem Domini et verba tua timens populum et oboediens voci eorum;
Now forgive my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD."25 sed nunc tolle, quaeso, peccatum meum et revertere mecum, ut adorem Dominum ”.
But Samuel said to Saul, "I will not return with you, because you rejected the command of the LORD and the LORD rejects you as king of Israel."26 Et ait Samuel ad Saul: “ Non revertar tecum, quia proiecisti sermonem Domini; et proiecit te Dominus, ne sis rex super Israel ”.
As Samuel turned to go, Saul seized a loose end of his mantle, and it tore off.27 Et conversus est Samuel, ut abiret; ille autem apprehendit summitatem pallii eius, quae et scissa est.
So Samuel said to him: "The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.28 Et ait ad eum Samuel: “ Scidit Dominus regnum Israel a te hodie et tradidit illud proximo tuo meliori te.
The Glory of Israel neither retracts nor repents, for he is not man that he should repent."29 Porro Gloria Israel non mentitur et paenitudine non flectitur; neque enim homo est, ut agat paenitentiam ”.
But he answered: "I have sinned, yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel. Return with me that I may worship the LORD your God."30 At ille ait: “ Peccavi, sed nunc honora me coram senibus populi mei et coram Israel; et revertere mecum, ut adorem Dominum Deum tuum ”.
And so Samuel returned with him, and Saul worshiped the LORD.31 Reversus ergo Samuel secutus est Saulem et adoravit Saul Dominum.
Afterward Samuel commanded, "Bring Agag, king of Amalek, to me." Agag came to him struggling and saying, "So it is bitter death!"32 Dixitque Samuel: “ Adducite ad me Agag regem Amalec ”. Et oblatus est ei Agag tremens. Et dixit Agag: “ Certe secessit amaritudo mortis! ”.
And Samuel said, "As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women." Then he cut Agag down before the LORD in Gilgal.33 Et ait Samuel: “ Sicut fecit absque liberis mulieres gladius tuus, sic absque liberis erit inter mulieres mater tua ”. Et in frusta concidit Samuel Agag coram Domino in Galgalis.
Samuel departed for Ramah, while Saul went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul.34 Abiit autem Samuel in Rama; Saul vero ascendit in domum suam in Gabaa Saulis.
Never again, as long as he lived, did Samuel see Saul. Yet he grieved over Saul, because the LORD regretted having made him king of Israel.35 Et non vidit Samuel ultra Saul usque ad diem mortis suae; verumtamen lugebat Samuel Saul, quoniam Dominum paenitebat quod constituisset Saul regem super Israel.
