1 So all the Israelites came out as one man: from Dan to Beer-sheba, and from the land of Gilead, the community was gathered to the LORD at Mizpah.	1 Si mossero tutti gli Israeliti e si riunirono in assemblea, tutti unanimi da Dan fino a Bersabea e fino alla regione del Gàlaad, in Mizpa, alla presenza del Signore.
2 The leaders of all the people and all the tribesmen of Israel, four hundred thousand foot soldiers who were swordsmen, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God.	2 Erano presenti all'assemblea del popolo di Dio i capi del popolo di tutte le tribù di Israele: e c'erano quattrocentomila fanti abili nell'uso della spada.
3 Meanwhile, the Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites asked to be told how the crime had taken place,	3 I Beniaminiti sentirono dire che gli Israeliti si erano radunati in Mizpa. Gli Israeliti chiesero che fosse loro spiegato come era avvenuto quel delitto.
4 and the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, testified: "My concubine and I went into Gibeah of Benjamin for the night.	4 Prese allora la parola il levita, marito della donna uccisa, e disse: "Io ero entrato con la mia concubina in Gabaa di Beniamino per pernottarvi.
5 But the citizens of Gibeah rose up against me by night and surrounded the house in which I was. Me they attempted to kill, and my concubine they abused so that she died.	5 Quand'ecco che dei cittadini di Gabaa, sollevatisi contro di me, circondarono di notte la casa dove mi trovavo. 6 So I took my concubine and cut her up and sent her through every part of the territory of Israel, because of the monstrous crime they had committed in Israel.	6 Io allora ne presi il cadavere, lo feci a pezzi e li mandai per tutto il territorio dell'eredità d'Israele, perché era stata commessa in Israele un'infamia grande.
7 Now that you are all here, O Israelites, state what you propose to do."	7 Ecco, ora tocca a voi tutti, o Israeliti, discutere e prendere una decisione, qui".
8 All the people rose as one man to say, "None of us is to leave for his tent or return to his home.	8 Tutto il popolo, come un sol uomo, insorse a dire: "Nessuno di noi tornerà alla sua tenda, nessuno tornerà alla sua casa.
9 Now as for Gibeah, this is what we will do: We will proceed against it by lot,	9 E ora, ecco quello che faremo a Gabaa: ci porremo contro di essa. Tireremo a sorte,
10 taking from all the tribes of Israel ten men for every hundred, a hundred for every thousand, a thousand for every ten thousand, and procuring supplies for the soldiers who will go to deal fully and suitably with Gibeah of Benjamin for the crime it committed in Israel."	10 scegliendo dieci uomini su ogni cento da tutte le tribù di Israele, cento su mille e mille su diecimila, perché provvedano ai viveri per coloro che andranno a ripagare Gabaa di Beniamino per tutta l'infamia che essa ha commesso in Israele".
11 When, therefore, all the men of Israel without exception were leagued together against the city,	11 Così tutti gli uomini d'Israele si radunarono davanti a Gabaa, unanimi come un sol uomo.
12 the tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, "What is this evil which has occurred among you?	12 Allora le tribù di Israele mandarono alcuni uomini per tutto il territorio della tribù di Beniamino a dire: "Che è questo delitto che è avvenuto in mezzo a voi?
13 Now give up these corrupt men of Gibeah, that we may put them to death and thus purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjaminites refused to accede to the demand of their brothers, the Israelites.	13 Ora consegnateci quegli uomini figli di Belial che sono in Gabaa, ché li metteremo a morte, per togliere il male in mezzo a Israele". Ma i Beniaminiti non vollero dare ascolto alle parole dei loro fratelli Israeliti,
14 Instead, the Benjaminites assembled from their other cities to Gibeah, to do battle with the Israelites.	14 anzi si radunarono dalle loro città in Gabaa, decisi a combattere contro gli Israeliti.
15 The number of the Benjaminite swordsmen from the other cities on that occasion was twenty-six thousand, in addition to the inhabitants of Gibeah.	15 I Beniaminiti venuti dalle varie città, quel giorno, si contarono: erano ventiseimila uomini, tutti capaci di maneggiare la spada, senza contare gli abitanti di Gabaa.
16 Included in this total were seven hundred picked men who were left-handed, every one of them able to sling a stone at a hair without missing.	16 Fra tutti quei soldati c'erano anche settecento uomini, scelti ambidestri, che erano capaci, tutti, di scagliare con la fionda un sasso con la massima precisione, senza mancare il bersaglio.
17 Meanwhile the other Israelites who, without Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen ready for battle,	17 Anche gli uomini di Israele si contarono: erano quattrocentomila (il conto fu fatto senza Beniamino) capaci di maneggiare la spada, eran tutti guerrieri.
18 moved on to Bethel and consulted God. When the Israelites asked who should go first in the attack on the Benjaminites, the LORD said, "Judah shall go first."	18 Gli Israeliti si mossero per raggiungere Betel, dove interrogarono Dio per sapere chi di loro avrebbe dovuto essere il primo a muovere contro i Beniaminiti. Il Signore rispose: "Muova per primo Giuda".
19 The next day the Israelites advanced on Gibeah with their forces.	19 Gli Israeliti mossero all'alba e posero il campo contro Gabaa.
20 On the day the Israelites drew up in battle array at Gibeah for the combat with Benjamin,	20 Gli Israeliti, usciti a battaglia contro Beniamino, schierarono l'esercito contro Gabaa.
21 the Benjaminites came out of the city and felled twenty-two thousand men of Israel.	21 Ma i Beniaminiti, fatta una sortita da Gabaa, uccisero quel giorno ventiduemila uomini d'Israele.
22 But though the Israelite soldiers took courage and again drew up for combat in the same place as on the previous day,	22 Si rincuorarono allora gli Israeliti e tornarono a schierare l'esercito nello stesso luogo in cui lo avevano schierato il giorno prima.
23 Then the Israelites went up and wept before the LORD until evening. "Shall I again engage my brother Benjamin in battle?" they asked the LORD; and the LORD answered that they should.	23 Allora gli Israeliti, tornati a Betel, piansero alla presenza del Signore fino a sera e gli domandarono se dovevano continuare la guerra contro i Beniaminiti che erano loro fratelli. Il Signore rispose: "Andate contro di loro".
24 when they met the Benjaminites for the second time,	24 Così fu la seconda giornata che gli Israeliti muovevano contro quelli di Beniamino.
25 once again the Benjaminites who came out of Gibeah against them felled eighteen thousand Israelites, all of them swordsmen.	25 Anche questa volta i Beniaminiti uscirono ad affrontare quelli d'Israele fuori di Gabaa e ne uccisero ancora diciottomila, tutti capaci di maneggiare la spada.
26 So the entire Israelite army went up to Bethel, where they wept and remained fasting before the LORD until evening of that day, besides offering holocausts and peace offerings before the LORD.	26 Tornarono tutti gli Israeliti, tutto il popolo, a Betel per piangere. E restarono lì, davanti al Signore, digiunando fino a sera: fecero olocausti e sacrifici di comunione.
27 When the Israelites consulted the LORD (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,	27 Poi gli Israeliti interrogarono ancora il Signore (in quel tempo l'arca dell'alleanza di Dio si trovava in quel luogo,
28 and Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, was ministering to him in those days), and asked, "Shall I go out again to battle with Benjamin, my brother, or shall I desist?" the LORD said, "Attack! for tomorrow I will deliver him into your power."	28 e ad essa prestava servizio Finees, figlio di Eleazaro, figlio di Aronne): volevano sapere se dovevano ancora continuare la guerra contro Beniamino che era loro fratello, oppure se dovevano smettere. 29 So Israel set men in ambush around Gibeah.	29 Gli Israeliti posero dei gruppi all'agguato intorno a Gabaa.
30 The Israelites went up against the Benjaminites for the third time and formed their line of battle at Gibeah as on other occasions.	30 E così fu la terza giornata che gli Israeliti mossero contro quelli di Beniamino, schierandosi davanti a Gabaa come le altre volte.
31 The Benjaminites went out to meet them, and in the beginning they killed off about thirty of the Israelite soldiers in the open field, just as on the other occasions.	31 I Beniaminiti vennero fuori dalle mura incontro al nemico, lasciandosi così attirare lontano dalla città. Cominciarono ad assalire come le altre volte, uccidendo fra gli Israeliti circa trenta uomini. Lo scontro avvenne in aperta campagna, al bivio da cui partono le strade che conducono l'una a Betel, l'altra a Gabaa.
32 Therefore the Benjaminites thought, "We are defeating them as before"; not realizing that disaster was about to overtake them. The Israelites, however, had planned the flight so as to draw them away from the city onto the highways. They were drawn away from the city onto the highways, of which the one led to Bethel, the other to Gibeon.	32 I Beniaminiti pensarono che quelli di Israele fuggissero davanti a loro, come era successo le altre volte; invece gli Israeliti avevano fatto il piano di fuggire per attirare i Beniaminiti lontano dalla città, nella zona del bivio.
33 And then all the men of Israel rose from their places. They re-formed their ranks at Baal-tamar, and the Israelites in ambush rushed from their place west of Gibeah,	33 Tutti gli Israeliti mossero dalle loro posizioni e si schierarono a battaglia a Baal-Tamar, mentre gli uomini disposti negli agguati irrompevano dai loro nascondigli posti nella piana brulla di Gabaa.
34 ten thousand picked men from all Israel, and advanced against the city itself. In a fierce battle,	34 Diecimila uomini scelti di tutto Israele si presentarono davanti a Gabaa. La battaglia fu molto aspra: e i Beniaminiti non si immaginavano che la sventura stava per toccarli.
35 the LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel; and on that day the Israelites killed twenty-five thousand one hundred men of Benjamin, all of them swordsmen.	35 Il Signore sconfisse Beniamino davanti a Israele. E gli Israeliti uccisero quel giorno venticinquemilacento Beniaminiti, tutti capaci di maneggiare la spada.
36 To the Benjaminites it had looked as though the enemy were defeated, for the men of Israel gave ground to Benjamin, trusting in the ambush they had set at Gibeah.	36 I Beniaminiti si accorsero di essere stati sconfitti. Gli Israeliti si erano ritirati davanti ai Beniaminiti perché avevano fondato la loro speranza sugli uomini che avevano posto all'agguato contro Gabaa.
37 But then the men in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, overran it, and put the whole city to the sword.	37 Questi, infatti, si precipitarono in furia su Gabaa e vi penetrarono, passando tutti gli abitanti a fil di spada.
38 Now, the other Israelites had agreed with the men in ambush on a smoke signal they were to send up from the city.	38 V'era stato un accordo fra il grosso dell'esercito israelita e gli uomini che erano all'agguato, che questi ultimi, una volta penetrati nella città, avrebbero fatto una grande colonna di fumo.
39 And though the men of Benjamin had begun by killing off some thirty of the men of Israel, under the impression that they were defeating them as surely as in the earlier fighting, the Israelites wheeled about to resist	39 A questo segnale il grosso dell'esercito israelita avrebbe cessato di fuggire per dare battaglia. I Beniaminiti vennero all'assalto e uccisero una trentina di Israeliti. Perciò essi erano sicuri che Israele sarebbe riuscito sconfitto come nella battaglia precedente.
40 as the smoke of the signal column began to rise up from the city. It was when Benjamin looked back and saw the whole city in flames against the sky	40 Quando, però, cominciò ad alzarsi dalla città la colonna di fumo, i Beniaminiti si volsero indietro e videro salire verso il cielo il fumo dell'incendio che divorava tutta la città.
41 that the men of Israel wheeled about. Therefore the men of Benjamin were thrown into confusion, for they realized the disaster that had overtaken them.	41 Fu allora che il grosso degli Israeliti cessò di fuggire per far fronte ai Beniaminiti che furono presi dal panico, perché si rendevano conto che la sciagura li stava raggiungendo.
42 They retreated before the men of Israel in the direction of the desert, with the fight being pressed against them. In their very midst, meanwhile, those who had been in the city were spreading destruction.	42 Si dettero alla fuga davanti agli uomini d'Israele in direzione del deserto, ma la battaglia li raggiunse ugualmente, mentre gli Israeliti che uscivano dalla città li prendevano in mezzo massacrandoli.
43 The men of Benjamin had been surrounded, and were now pursued to a point east of Gibeah,	43 Beniamino fu circondato e inseguito fin sotto Gabaa, dalla parte a oriente della città.
44 while eighteen thousand of them fell, warriors to a man.	44 Furono diciottomila i Beniaminiti che caddero, tutti guerrieri valorosi.
45 The rest turned and fled through the desert to the rock Rimmon. But on the highways the Israelites picked off five thousand men among them, and chasing them up to Gidom, killed another two thousand of them there.	45 E si volsero ancora in fuga in direzione del deserto: raggiunsero la rupe di Rimmon; ma gli Israeliti ne rastrellarono altri cinquemila per le varie strade, continuando a inseguirli fino a Ghideom, uccidendone altri duemila.
46 Those of Benjamin who fell on that day were in all twenty-five thousand swordsmen, warriors to a man.	46 Così quel giorno Beniamino ebbe, in tutto, venticinquemila morti, tutti capaci di maneggiare la spada. Ed erano guerrieri valorosi.
47 But six hundred others who turned and fled through the desert reached the rock Rimmon, where they remained for four months.	47 In seguito alla fuga raggiunsero la rupe di Rimmon, nel deserto, seicento uomini, i quali vi restarono per quattro mesi.
48 The men of Israel withdrew through the territory of the Benjaminites, putting to the sword the inhabitants of the cities, the livestock, and all they chanced upon. Moreover they destroyed by fire all the cities they came upon.	48 Ritornati poi indietro per cercare ancora Beniaminiti, gli Israeliti passavano tutti a fil di spada nel territorio della città, uomini e bestie, chiunque capitasse loro davanti; davano alle fiamme anche tutti i villaggi che incontravano.
