1 So all the Israelites came out as one man: from Dan to Beer-sheba, and from the land of Gilead, the community was gathered to the LORD at Mizpah.	1 Kivonultak tehát Izrael fiai mindnyájan és összegyűltek valamennyien, Dántól Beersebáig és Gileád földjéről, mint egy ember az Úr elé, Micpába.
2 The leaders of all the people and all the tribesmen of Israel, four hundred thousand foot soldiers who were swordsmen, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God.	2 A nép minden főembere, Izrael minden törzse összejött Isten népének gyülekezetébe: négyszázezer gyalogos harcos.
3 Meanwhile, the Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites asked to be told how the crime had taken place,	3 (Benjamin fiai előtt sem volt titok, hogy Izrael fiai felmentek Micpába.) Aztán megkérdezték a levitát, a megölt asszony férjét, hogy hogyan történt az a nagy gonoszság.
4 and the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, testified: "My concubine and I went into Gibeah of Benjamin for the night.	4 Az ezt felelte: »Eljutottam a feleségemmel Benjamin-Gibeába, s ott szálltam meg.
5 But the citizens of Gibeah rose up against me by night and surrounded the house in which I was. Me they attempted to kill, and my concubine they abused so that she died.	5 Éjjel aztán, íme, körülvették a város emberei azt a házat, amelyben tartózkodtam, s meg akartak ölni, majd feleségemet a bujaság hihetetlen hevével annyira meggyötörték, hogy végre is meghalt.
6 So I took my concubine and cut her up and sent her through every part of the territory of Israel, because of the monstrous crime they had committed in Israel.	6 Erre megragadtam, s darabokra vágtam és egy-egy részt küldtem birtokotok valamennyi területére, mert sohasem történt ekkora aljasság és ilyen nagy vétek Izraelben.
7 Now that you are all here, O Israelites, state what you propose to do."	7 Itt vagytok mindnyájan, Izrael fiai, határozzatok, mit kell tennetek.«
8 All the people rose as one man to say, "None of us is to leave for his tent or return to his home.	8 Felállt erre az egész nép, s szinte egy ember szavával felelte: »Nem térünk vissza sátrainkba, s nem megy egyikünk sem házába,
9 Now as for Gibeah, this is what we will do: We will proceed against it by lot,	9 hanem közös erővel ezt cselekedjük Gibeával:
10 taking from all the tribes of Israel ten men for every hundred, a hundred for every thousand, a thousand for every ten thousand, and procuring supplies for the soldiers who will go to deal fully and suitably with Gibeah of Benjamin for the crime it committed in Israel."	10 ki kell választani Izrael valamennyi törzséből tíz embert száz közül, százat ezer közül és ezret tízezer közül, hogy élelmet hordjon a seregnek, s harcolhassunk Benjamin-Gibea ellen, s megadhassuk neki a vétekért azt, amit érdemel.«
11 When, therefore, all the men of Israel without exception were leagued together against the city,	11 Egybe is gyűlt egész Izrael a város előtt, mint egy ember, egy szívvel, egy akarattal.
12 the tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin to say, "What is this evil which has occurred among you?	12 Ekkor követeket küldtek Benjamin egész törzséhez ezzel az üzenettel: »Miért történt közöttetek ekkora gonoszság?
13 Now give up these corrupt men of Gibeah, that we may put them to death and thus purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjaminites refused to accede to the demand of their brothers, the Israelites.	13 Adjátok ki azokat a gibeai embereket, akik e gaztettet elkövették, hogy meghaljanak, s eltűnjék a gonoszság Izraelből.« Ám azok nem hallgattak testvéreiknek, Izrael fiainak üzenetére,
14 Instead, the Benjaminites assembled from their other cities to Gibeah, to do battle with the Israelites.	14 sőt osztályrészük valamennyi városából összegyűltek Gibeába, hogy segítséget vigyenek nekik, s hadakozzanak Izrael egész népe ellen.
15 The number of the Benjaminite swordsmen from the other cities on that occasion was twenty-six thousand, in addition to the inhabitants of Gibeah.	15 Huszonötezren kerültek ki Benjaminból olyanok, akik kardot foghattak, Gibea lakosain kívül,
16 Included in this total were seven hundred picked men who were left-handed, every one of them able to sling a stone at a hair without missing.	16 akiknek hétszáz igen erős emberük volt; utóbbiak úgy hadakoztak bal kezükkel, mint a jobb kezükkel, s olyan biztosan hajították a parittyából a követ, hogy a hajszálat is eltalálták, s a kő ütése semmiképpen sem tévesztett célt.
17 Meanwhile the other Israelites who, without Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen ready for battle,	17 Izrael fiaiból viszont, Benjamin fiain kívül, négyszázezren kerültek ki olyanok, akik kardot foghattak, s harcrakészek voltak.
18 moved on to Bethel and consulted God. When the Israelites asked who should go first in the attack on the Benjaminites, the LORD said, "Judah shall go first."	18 Ezek felkeltek, s elmentek Isten házába, azaz Silóba, s megkérdezték Istent, s azt mondták: »Ki kezdje meg seregünkből a küzdelmet Benjamin fiai ellen?« Az Úr azt felelte: »Júda kezdje meg közületek.«
19 The next day the Israelites advanced on Gibeah with their forces.	19 Erre Izrael fiai mindjárt reggel felkerekedtek, s tábort ütöttek Gibea mellett,
20 On the day the Israelites drew up in battle array at Gibeah for the combat with Benjamin,	20 majd onnan felvonultak a harcra Benjamin ellen, s ostromolni kezdték a várost.
21 the Benjaminites came out of the city and felled twenty-two thousand men of Israel.	21 Benjamin fiai azonban kirontottak Gibeából, s megöltek azon a napon Izrael fiai közül huszonkétezer embert.
22 But though the Israelite soldiers took courage and again drew up for combat in the same place as on the previous day,	22 Ám Izrael fiai, erejükben és számukban bizakodva, ugyanazon a helyen, ahol az előbb küzdöttek, ismét csatarendbe álltak.
23 Then the Israelites went up and wept before the LORD until evening. "Shall I again engage my brother Benjamin in battle?" they asked the LORD; and the LORD answered that they should.	23 Előbb azonban felmentek az Úr elé és sírtak előtte egészen éjszakáig, s megkérdezték őt: »Fel kell-e még mennem harcolni Benjamin fiai, a testvéreim ellen vagy sem?« Az Úr így felelt nekik: »Csak menjetek fel ellenük, s bocsátkozzatok küzdelembe velük.«
24 when they met the Benjaminites for the second time,	24 Amikor azonban Izrael fiai másnap felvonultak a harcra Benjamin fiai ellen,
25 once again the Benjaminites who came out of Gibeah against them felled eighteen thousand Israelites, all of them swordsmen.	25 Benjamin fiai kirontottak Gibea kapuiból, s eléjük rohantak, s olyan nagy öldökléssel dühöngtek ellenük, hogy tizennyolcezer kardforgató embert terítettek le.
26 So the entire Israelite army went up to Bethel, where they wept and remained fasting before the LORD until evening of that day, besides offering holocausts and peace offerings before the LORD.	26 Erre Izrael fiai mindnyájan felmentek az Isten házába, leültek, sírtak az Úr előtt, böjtöltek azon a napon egészen estig, és egészen elégő áldozatokat s békeáldozatokat mutattak be neki,
27 When the Israelites consulted the LORD (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,	27 s megkérdezték őt helyzetükről. Abban az időben ott volt Isten szövetségének ládája,
28 and Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, was ministering to him in those days), and asked, "Shall I go out again to battle with Benjamin, my brother, or shall I desist?" the LORD said, "Attack! for tomorrow I will deliver him into your power."	28 és Fineesz, Áron fiának, Eleazárnak a fia volt a ház gondviselője. Megkérdezték tehát az Urat, s azt mondták: »Ki kell-e még mennünk a harcra Benjamin fiai, a testvéreink ellen, vagy hagyjuk abba?« Azt mondta az Úr nekik: »Csak menjetek fel, mert holnap kezetekbe adom őket.«
29 So Israel set men in ambush around Gibeah.	29 Erre Izrael fiai csapatokat helyeztek lesbe Gibea városa körül,
30 The Israelites went up against the Benjaminites for the third time and formed their line of battle at Gibeah as on other occasions.	30 s harmadízben is felvonultatták a sereget Benjamin ellen, mint először és másodszor.
31 The Benjaminites went out to meet them, and in the beginning they killed off about thirty of the Israelite soldiers in the open field, just as on the other occasions.	31 Ám Benjamin fiai is merészen kirontottak a városból, s jó messzire a futásnak eredő ellenség után nyomultak, miközben úgy, mint az első és a második napon, osztották a sebeket és vágták a hátrálókat azon a két ösvényen, amelyek közül az egyik Bételbe, a másik Gibeába vezetett és leterítettek körülbelül harminc embert.
32 Therefore the Benjaminites thought, "We are defeating them as before"; not realizing that disaster was about to overtake them. The Israelites, however, had planned the flight so as to draw them away from the city onto the highways. They were drawn away from the city onto the highways, of which the one led to Bethel, the other to Gibeon.	32 Azt hitték ugyanis, hogy azok a szokott módon meghátrálnak. Ám ők csak mesterségesen színlelték a futást, s abban állapodtak meg, hogy elszakítják őket a várostól, s mintha megfutamodnának, a fent említett utakra viszik.
33 And then all the men of Israel rose from their places. They re-formed their ranks at Baal-tamar, and the Israelites in ambush rushed from their place west of Gibeah,	33 Fel is keltek Izrael fiai mindnyájan helyükről, és azon a helyen, amelyet Baáltámárnak hívnak, csatarendbe álltak. Ugyanakkor a város körül lesben álló csapatok lassankint felfejlődtek,
34 ten thousand picked men from all Israel, and advanced against the city itself. In a fierce battle,	34 és előjöttek a város nyugati részéről, sőt másik tízezer, egész Izraelből összeválogatott ember is harcra ingerelte a város lakóit. Aztán súlyos harc indult Benjamin fiai ellen, de azok nem vették észre, hogy minden oldalról veszedelem fenyegeti őket.
35 the LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel; and on that day the Israelites killed twenty-five thousand one hundred men of Benjamin, all of them swordsmen.	35 Végre is az Úr megverte őket Izrael fiainak színe előtt, s megöltek közülük azon a napon huszonötezer-száz, csupa hadakozó és kardforgató férfit.
36 To the Benjaminites it had looked as though the enemy were defeated, for the men of Israel gave ground to Benjamin, trusting in the ambush they had set at Gibeah.	36 Amikor Benjamin fiai látták, hogy alul maradtak, futásnak eredtek. – Amikor ugyanis Izrael fiai látták a dolgokat, helyet engedtek nekik, hogy nyomuljanak utánuk, s így azokhoz a lesben álló csapatokhoz jussanak, amelyeket a város mellett elhelyeztek.
37 But then the men in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, overran it, and put the whole city to the sword.	37 Amikor aztán Benjamin hátat fordított öldöklőinek, a lesben állók hirtelen felkeltek, s bementek a városba, s azt kardélre hányták.
38 Now, the other Israelites had agreed with the men in ambush on a smoke signal they were to send up from the city.	38 Izrael fiai már most abban a jelben állapodtak meg azokkal, akiket lesbe állítottak, hogy ha bevették a várost, gyújtsanak tüzet, hogy annak magasba szálló füstjével jelezzék, hogy elfoglalták a várost.
39 And though the men of Benjamin had begun by killing off some thirty of the men of Israel, under the impression that they were defeating them as surely as in the earlier fighting, the Israelites wheeled about to resist	39 Amikor ezt Izrael megtámadott fiai meglátták (Benjamin fiai ugyanis azt hitték, hogy megfutamodnak, s mind hevesebben üldözték őket, s harminc embert le is vágtak seregükből),
40 as the smoke of the signal column began to rise up from the city. It was when Benjamin looked back and saw the whole city in flames against the sky	40 s a városból oszlopszerűen felemelkedő füstöt megpillantották, s amikor Benjamin is hátratekintett, s látta, hogy a várost bevették és száll belőle a láng a magasba,
41 that the men of Israel wheeled about. Therefore the men of Benjamin were thrown into confusion, for they realized the disaster that had overtaken them.	41 akkor ők, akik eddig futást színleltek, megfordították arcukat és keményen helytálltak. Amikor ezt Benjamin fiai látták, megfutamodtak,
42 They retreated before the men of Israel in the direction of the desert, with the fight being pressed against them. In their very midst, meanwhile, those who had been in the city were spreading destruction.	42 s a puszta felé vivő útra tartottak, de oda is utánuk nyomultak ellenségeik. Ugyanakkor azok, akik felgyújtották a várost, eléjük vágtak.
43 The men of Benjamin had been surrounded, and were now pursued to a point east of Gibeah,	43 Így az történt, hogy mindkét oldalról ellenség vágta őket és sehonnan sem volt nyugtuk és meg kellett halniuk: elestek és elhullottak Gibea városának keleti vidékén.
44 while eighteen thousand of them fell, warriors to a man.	44 Azok az emberek, akiket ezen a helyen öltek meg, tizennyolcezren voltak: mind igazán erős harcos.
45 The rest turned and fled through the desert to the rock Rimmon. But on the highways the Israelites picked off five thousand men among them, and chasing them up to Gidom, killed another two thousand of them there.	45 Amikor látták ezt azok, akik Benjaminból még megmaradtak, a pusztába menekültek, és a Remmon nevű szikla felé tartottak. Amint a menekülés közben mindenfelé bolyongtak és igyekeztek, szintén megöltek közülük ötezer embert. Amikor pedig tovább tartottak, utánuk nyomultak és megöltek másik kétezret is.
46 Those of Benjamin who fell on that day were in all twenty-five thousand swordsmen, warriors to a man.	46 Így történt az, hogy azok, akik Benjaminból a különböző helyeken elestek, összesen huszonötezren voltak: csupa hadra igazán alkalmas harcos.
47 But six hundred others who turned and fled through the desert reached the rock Rimmon, where they remained for four months.	47 Ennek következtében Benjamin egész létszámából csak az a hatszáz férfi maradt meg, aki meg tudott menekülni és a pusztába futni; ezek Remmon szikláján maradtak négy hónapig.
48 The men of Israel withdrew through the territory of the Benjaminites, putting to the sword the inhabitants of the cities, the livestock, and all they chanced upon. Moreover they destroyed by fire all the cities they came upon.	48 Izrael fiai aztán visszafordultak, s kardélre hányták a városban megmaradt embereket s barmokat egyaránt, Benjamin valamennyi városát és falvát pedig a lángok martalékává tették.
