NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
After the death of Joshua the Israelites consulted the LORD, asking, "Who shall be first among us to attack the Canaanites and to do battle with them?"1 Now after Joshua's death, the Israelites consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Which of us is to march on theCanaanites first, to make war on them?'
The LORD answered, "Judah shall attack: I have delivered the land into his power."2 And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to march on them first; I am delivering the country into his hands.'
Judah then said to his brother Simeon, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, and let us engage the Canaanites in battle. I will likewise accompany you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him.3 Judah then said to his brother Simeon, 'March with me into the territory al otted to me; we shall makewar on the Canaanites, and then I in my turn shal march into your territory with you.' And Simeon marched withhim.
When the forces of Judah attacked, the LORD delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their power, and they slew ten thousand of them in Bezek.4 So Judah marched on them, and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, andthey defeated them at Bezek-ten thousand of them!
It was in Bezek that they came upon Adonibezek and fought against him. When they defeated the Canaanites and Perizzites,5 At Bezek they came upon Adoni-Bezek; they joined battle with him and defeated the Canaanites andPerizzites.
Adonibezek fled. They set out in pursuit, and when they caught him, cut off his thumbs and his big toes.6 Adoni-Bezek took to flight, but they chased and captured him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
At this Adonibezek said, "Seventy kings, with their thumbs and big toes cut off, used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so has God repaid me." He was brought to Jerusalem, and there he died.7 Adoni-Bezek said, 'Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up the crumbsunder my table. As I did, God does to me.' He was taken to Jerusalem, and there he died.
(The Judahites fought against Jerusalem and captured it, putting it to the sword; then they destroyed the city by fire.)8 (The sons of Judah attacked Jerusalem and took it: they put its people to the sword and set fire to thecity.)
Afterward the Judahites went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the mountain region, in the Negeb, and in the foothills.9 After this the sons of Judah went down to make war on the Canaanites who were living in the highlands, the Negeb and the lowlands.
Judah also marched against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron, which was formerly called Kiriath-arba, and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.10 Judah next marched on the Canaanites living in Hebron -- the name of Hebron in olden days wasKiriath-Arba -- and beat Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.
From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir, which was formerly called Kiriath-sepher.11 From there, he marched on the inhabitants of Debir -- the name of Debir in olden days was Kiriath-Sepher.
And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Achsah in marriage to the one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it."12 Caleb said, 'To the man who conquers and captures Kiriath-Sepher, I shal give my daughter Achsahas wife.'
Othniel, son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz, captured it; so Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah in marriage.13 The man who captured it was Othniel son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb, who gave him hisdaughter Achsah as wife.
On the day of her marriage to Othniel she induced him to ask her father for some land. Then, as she alighted from the ass, Caleb asked her, "What is troubling you?"14 When she arrived, he urged her to ask her father for arable land, but when she alighted from thedonkey and Caleb asked her, 'What is the matter?'
Give me an additional gift," she answered. "Since you have assigned land in the Negeb to me, give me also pools of water." So Caleb gave her the upper and the lower pool.15 she said to him, 'Grant me a blessing! As the land you have given me is the Negeb, give me springs ofwater, too!' So Caleb gave her what she wanted: the upper springs and the lower springs.
The descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, came up with the Judahites from the city of palms to the desert at Arad (which is in the Negeb). But they later left and settled among the Amalekites.16 The sons of Hobab the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, marched up with the sons of Judah from theCity of Palm Trees into the desert of Judah lying in the Negeb of Arad, where they went and settled among thepeople.
Judah then went with his brother Simeon, and they defeated the Canaanites who dwelt in Zephath. After having doomed the city to destruction, they renamed it Hormah.17 Judah then set out with his brother Simeon. They beat the Canaanites who lived in Zephath anddelivered it over to the curse of destruction; hence the town was given the name of Hormah.
Judah, however, did not occupy Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, or Ekron with its territory.18 Judah then captured Gaza and its territory, Ashkelon and its territory, Ekron and its territory.AndYahweh was with Judah, who made himself master of the highlands;
Since the LORD was with Judah, he gained possession of the mountain region. Yet he could not dislodge those who lived on the plain, because they had iron chariots.19 he could not, however, dispossess the inhabitants of the plain, since they had iron chariots.
As Moses had commanded, Hebron was given to Caleb, who then drove from it the three sons of Anak.20 As Moses had directed, Hebron was given to Caleb, and he drove the three sons of Anak out of it.
The Benjaminites did not dislodge the Jebusites who dwelt in Jerusalem, with the result that the Jebusites live in Jerusalem beside the Benjaminites to the present day.21 As regards the Jebusites living in Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin did not dispossess them, and theJebusites have been living in Jerusalem with the sons of Benjamin ever since.
The house of Joseph, too, marched up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.22 Similarly, the House of Joseph marched on Bethel, and Yahweh was with them.
The house of Joseph had a reconnaissance made of Bethel, which formerly was called Luz.23 The House of Joseph made a reconnaissance of Bethel. (In olden days, the name of the town wasLuz.)
The scouts saw a man coming out of the city and said to him, "Show us a way into the city, and we will spare you."24 The scouts saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, 'Show us how to get into the town andwe shal show you faithful love.'
He showed them a way into the city, which they then put to the sword; but they let the man and his whole clan go free.25 And when he had shown them a way into the town, they put the town to the sword but let the man andhis whole clan go.
He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, as it is still called.26 The man went off to the country of the Hittites and built a town which he called Luz; and that has been its name ever since.
Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean with its towns or of Taanach with its towns. Neither did he dislodge the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, those of Ibleam and its towns, or those of Megiddo and its towns. The Canaanites kept their hold in this district.27 Manasseh did not dispossess Beth-Shean and its dependencies, nor Taanach and its dependencies, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its dependencies, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its dependencies, nor theinhabitants of Megiddo and its dependencies; in those parts the Canaanites held their ground.
When the Israelites grew stronger, they impressed the Canaanites as laborers, but did not drive them out.28 But when the Israelites became stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labour, althoughthey did not dispossess them.
Similarly, the Ephraimites did not drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, and so the Canaanites live in Gezer in their midst.29 Nor did Ephraim dispossess the Canaanites living in Gezer; thus, the Canaanites went on living inGezer with him.
Zebulun did not dislodge the inhabitants of Kitron or those of Nahalol; the Canaanites live among them, but have become forced laborers.30 Zebulun did not dispossess the inhabitants of Kitron or of Nahalol. The Canaanites lived on withZebulun but were subjected to forced labour.
Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or those of Sidon, or take possession of Mahaleb, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik or Rehob.31 Asher did not dispossess the inhabitants of Acco, nor those of Sidon, of Mahalab, of Achzib, of Helbah,of Aphek or of Rehob.
The Asherites live among the Canaanite natives of the land, whom they have not dislodged.32 So the Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the country, not having dispossessed them.
Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh or those of Beth-anath, and so they live among the Canaanite natives of the land. However, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath have become forced laborers for them.33 Naphtali did not dispossess the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh or of Beth-Anath; they settled among theCanaanite inhabitants of the country, but the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh and of Beth-Anath were subjected toforced labour for them.
The Amorites hemmed in the Danites in the mountain region, not permitting them to go down into the plain.34 The Amorites drove the Danites back into the highlands and would not let them come down into theplain.
The Amorites had a firm hold in Harheres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but as the house of Joseph gained the upper hand, they were impressed as laborers.35 The Amorites held their ground at Har -- Heres and Shaalbim, but when the hand of the House ofJoseph grew heavier, they were subjected to forced labour. (
The territory of the Amorites extended from the Akrabbim pass to Sela and beyond.36 The territory of the Edomites begins at the Ascent of Scorpions, runs to the Rock and continues onupwards.)
