1 After the death of Joshua the Israelites consulted the LORD, asking, "Who shall be first among us to attack the Canaanites and to do battle with them?"	1 ORA, dopo la morte di Giosuè, i figliuoli d’Israele domandarono il Signore, dicendo: Chi di noi salirà il primo contro a’ Cananei, per far loro guerra?
2 The LORD answered, "Judah shall attack: I have delivered the land into his power."	2 E il Signore disse: Salga Giuda; ecco, io gli ho dato il paese nelle mani.
3 Judah then said to his brother Simeon, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, and let us engage the Canaanites in battle. I will likewise accompany you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him.	3 E Giuda disse a Simeone, suo fratello: Sali meco alla mia parte; e noi guerreggeremo contro a’ Cananei; poi, ancora io andrò alla tua parte. E Simeone andò con lui.
4 When the forces of Judah attacked, the LORD delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their power, and they slew ten thousand of them in Bezek.	4 Giuda adunque salì; e il Signore diede loro nelle mani i Cananei ed i Ferizzei; ed essi li percossero in Bezec, in numero di diecimila.
5 It was in Bezek that they came upon Adonibezek and fought against him. When they defeated the Canaanites and Perizzites,	5 E trovarono Adonibezec in Bezec, e combatterono contro a lui, e percossero i Cananei ed i Ferizzei.
6 Adonibezek fled. They set out in pursuit, and when they caught him, cut off his thumbs and his big toes.	6 E Adonibezec fuggì; ma essi lo perseguitarono, e, presolo, gli tagliarono i diti grossi delle mani e de’ piedi.
7 At this Adonibezek said, "Seventy kings, with their thumbs and big toes cut off, used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so has God repaid me." He was brought to Jerusalem, and there he died.	7 E Adonibezec disse: Settanta re, che aveano i diti grossi delle mani e de’ piedi tagliati, se ne stavano già sotto la mia tavola, a ricoglier ciò che ne cadea; come io ho fatto, così mi ha Iddio renduto. Ed essi lo menarono in Gerusalemme, e quivi morì.
8 (The Judahites fought against Jerusalem and captured it, putting it to the sword; then they destroyed the city by fire.)	8 Ora i figliuoli di Giuda aveano combattuta Gerusalemme, e l’aveano presa, e messa a fil di spada; e aveano messa la città a fuoco e fiamma
9 Afterward the Judahites went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the mountain region, in the Negeb, and in the foothills.	9 E poi erano scesi per guerreggiar contro a’ Cananei, che abitavano il monte, e nella parte meridionale, e nella pianura.
10 Judah also marched against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron, which was formerly called Kiriath-arba, and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.	10 Giuda ancora era andato contro a’ Cananei che abitavano in Hebron, il cui nome per addietro era stato Chiriat-Arba, e avea percosso Sesai, Ahiman e Talmai.
11 From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir, which was formerly called Kiriath-sepher.	11 E di là era andato contro agli abitanti di Debir, il cui nome per addietro era stato Chiriat-sefer.
12 And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Achsah in marriage to the one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it."	12 E Caleb avea detto: Chi percoterà Chiriat-sefer, e la piglierà, io gli darò Acsa, mia figliuola, per moglie.
13 Othniel, son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz, captured it; so Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah in marriage.	13 E Otniel, figliuolo di Chenaz, fratel minore di Caleb, l’avea presa; ed egli gli diede Acsa, sua figliuola, per moglie.
14 On the day of her marriage to Othniel she induced him to ask her father for some land. Then, as she alighted from the ass, Caleb asked her, "What is troubling you?"	14 E quando ella venne a marito, ella l’indusse a domandare un campo a suo padre. Poi ella si gittò giù dall’asino. E Caleb le disse: Che hai?
15 Give me an additional gift," she answered. "Since you have assigned land in the Negeb to me, give me also pools of water." So Caleb gave her the upper and the lower pool.	15 Ed ella gli disse: Fammi un dono; poichè tu m’hai data una terra asciutta, dammi ancora delle fonti d’acque. E Caleb le donò delle fonti ch’erano disopra, e disotto di quella terra.
16 The descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, came up with the Judahites from the city of palms to the desert at Arad (which is in the Negeb). But they later left and settled among the Amalekites.	16 Ora i figliuoli del Cheneo, suocero di Mosè, erano anch’essi saliti co’ figliuoli di Giuda, dalla città delle palme, al deserto di Giuda, che è dal Mezzodì di Arad. Essi adunque andarono, e dimorarono col popolo.
17 Judah then went with his brother Simeon, and they defeated the Canaanites who dwelt in Zephath. After having doomed the city to destruction, they renamed it Hormah.	17 Poi Giuda andò con Simeone, suo fratello, e percosse i Cananei che abitavano in Sefat, e distrussero quella città al modo dell’interdetto; onde le fu posto nome Horma.
18 Judah, however, did not occupy Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, or Ekron with its territory.	18 Giuda prese anche Gaza e i suoi confini; Ascalon e i suoi confini; ed Ecron e i suoi confini.
19 Since the LORD was with Judah, he gained possession of the mountain region. Yet he could not dislodge those who lived on the plain, because they had iron chariots.	19 E il Signore fu con Giuda; ed essi scacciarono gli abitanti del monte; ma non poterono scacciar gli abitanti della valle; perchè aveano de’ carri di ferro.
20 As Moses had commanded, Hebron was given to Caleb, who then drove from it the three sons of Anak.	20 E diedero Hebron a Caleb, secondo che Mosè avea detto; ed egli ne scacciò i tre figliuoli di Anac
21 The Benjaminites did not dislodge the Jebusites who dwelt in Jerusalem, with the result that the Jebusites live in Jerusalem beside the Benjaminites to the present day.	21 Ora i figliuoli di Beniamino non iscacciarono i Gebusei che abitavano in Gerusalemme; anzi i Gebusei son dimorati in Gerusalemme, co’ figliuoli di Beniamino, infino a questo giorno.
22 The house of Joseph, too, marched up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.	22 La casa di Giuseppe salì anch’essa contro a Betel; e il Signore fu con loro.
23 The house of Joseph had a reconnaissance made of Bethel, which formerly was called Luz.	23 E fecero spiare Betel, il cui nome anticamente era Luz.
24 The scouts saw a man coming out of the city and said to him, "Show us a way into the city, and we will spare you."	24 E quelli ch’erano all’agguato videro un uomo che usciva della città; e gli dissero: Deh! mostraci da qual parte si può entrar nella città, e noi useremo benignità inverso te.
25 He showed them a way into the city, which they then put to the sword; but they let the man and his whole clan go free.	25 Egli adunque mostrò loro la parte per la quale potevano entrar nella città; ed essi la misero a fil di spada; ma lasciarono andar quell’uomo con tutta la sua famiglia.
26 He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, as it is still called.	26 Ed egli se ne andò nel paese degli Hittei, ed edificò una città, e le pose nome Luz; il qual nome le dura infino al dì d’oggi.
27 Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean with its towns or of Taanach with its towns. Neither did he dislodge the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, those of Ibleam and its towns, or those of Megiddo and its towns. The Canaanites kept their hold in this district.	27 Manasse anch’esso non iscacciò gli abitanti di Bet-sean, nè delle terre del suo territorio; nè di Taanac, nè delle terre del suo territorio; nè gli abitanti di Dor, nè delle terre del suo territorio; nè gli abitanti d’Ibleam, nè delle terre del suo territorio; nè gli abitanti di Meghiddo, nè delle terre del suo territorio. E i Cananei si misero in cuore di abitare in quel paese.
28 When the Israelites grew stronger, they impressed the Canaanites as laborers, but did not drive them out.	28 Ben avvenne che, dopo che Israele si fu rinforzato, egli fece tributari i Cananei; ma non li scacciò.
29 Similarly, the Ephraimites did not drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, and so the Canaanites live in Gezer in their midst.	29 Efraim anch’esso non iscacciò i Cananei che abitavano in Ghezer; anzi i Cananei abitarono per mezzo esso in Ghezer.
30 Zebulun did not dislodge the inhabitants of Kitron or those of Nahalol; the Canaanites live among them, but have become forced laborers.	30 Zabulon non iscacciò gli abitanti di Chitron, nè gli abitanti di Nahalol; anzi i Cananei abitarono per mezzo esso, e furono fatti tributari.
31 Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or those of Sidon, or take possession of Mahaleb, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik or Rehob.	31 Aser non iscacciò gli abitanti di Acco, nè gli abitanti di Sidon, nè di Alab, nè di Aczib, nè di Helba, nè di Afic, nè di Rehob.
32 The Asherites live among the Canaanite natives of the land, whom they have not dislodged.	32 Anzi Aser abitò per mezzo i Cananei che abitavano nel paese; perciocchè egli non li scacciò.
33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh or those of Beth-anath, and so they live among the Canaanite natives of the land. However, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath have become forced laborers for them.	33 Neftali non iscacciò gli abitanti di Bet-semes, nè gli abitanti di Bet-anat; anzi abitò per mezzo i Cananei che abitavano nel paese; e gli abitanti di Bet-semes, e di Bet-anat, furono loro tributari.
34 The Amorites hemmed in the Danites in the mountain region, not permitting them to go down into the plain.	34 E gli Amorrei tennero i figliuoli di Dan ristretti nel monte; perciocchè non li lasciavano scender nella valle.
35 The Amorites had a firm hold in Harheres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but as the house of Joseph gained the upper hand, they were impressed as laborers.	35 E gli Amorrei si misero in cuore di abitare in Harheres, in Aialon, ed in Saalbim; ma, essendo la potenza di Giuseppe accresciuta, furono fatti tributari.
36 The territory of the Amorites extended from the Akrabbim pass to Sela and beyond.	36 E i confini degli Amorrei erano dalla salita di Acrabbim, dalla Rocca in su
