1 After the death of Joshua the Israelites consulted the LORD, asking, "Who shall be first among us to attack the Canaanites and to do battle with them?"	1 Después de la muerte de Josué, los israelitas consultaron al Señor, diciendo: «¿Quién de nosotros será el primero en subir a luchar contra los cananeos?».
2 The LORD answered, "Judah shall attack: I have delivered the land into his power."	2 El Señor respondió: «Que suba Judá, porque yo he puesto el país en sus manos».
3 Judah then said to his brother Simeon, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, and let us engage the Canaanites in battle. I will likewise accompany you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him.	3 Entonces Judá dijo a su hermano Simeón: «Sube conmigo al territorio que me ha tocado en suerte. Atacaremos a los cananeos, y después yo iré contigo al territorio que te ha sido asignado». Y Simeón lo acompañó.
4 When the forces of Judah attacked, the LORD delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their power, and they slew ten thousand of them in Bezek.	4 Cuando Judá subió, el Señor puso en sus manos a los cananeos y a los perizitas, y derrotaron en Bézec a diez mil hombres.
5 It was in Bezek that they came upon Adonibezek and fought against him. When they defeated the Canaanites and Perizzites,	5 Allí se encontraron con Adoní Bézec, combatieron contra él y derrotaron a los cananeos y a los perizitas.
6 Adonibezek fled. They set out in pursuit, and when they caught him, cut off his thumbs and his big toes.	6 Adoní Bézec trató de escapar, pero ellos lo persiguieron, lo capturaron y le cortaron el dedo pulgar de las manos y de los pies.
7 At this Adonibezek said, "Seventy kings, with their thumbs and big toes cut off, used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so has God repaid me." He was brought to Jerusalem, and there he died.	7 Entonces Adoní Bézec exclamó: «Setenta reyes, con los pulgares de sus manos y de sus pies cortados, recogían migajas debajo de mi mesa. Y ahora Dios me retribuye de acuerdo con lo que hice». Luego lo llevaron a Jerusalén, y allí murió.
8 (The Judahites fought against Jerusalem and captured it, putting it to the sword; then they destroyed the city by fire.)	8 La tribu de Judá atacó a Jerusalén; la tomaron, pasaron a sus habitantes al filo de la espada e incendiaron la ciudad.
9 Afterward the Judahites went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the mountain region, in the Negeb, and in the foothills.	9 Luego la tribu de Judá fue a combatir contra los cananeos que habitaban en la Montaña, el Négueb y la Sefelá.
10 Judah also marched against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron, which was formerly called Kiriath-arba, and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.	10 Judá avanzó contra los cananeos que habitaban en Hebrón –Hebrón se llamaba antiguamente Quiriat Arabá– y derrotó a Sesai, Ajimán y Talmai.
11 From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir, which was formerly called Kiriath-sepher.	11 Desde allí subió contra los habitantes de Debir, que antes se llamaba Quiriat Séfer.
12 And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Achsah in marriage to the one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it."	12 Entonces Caleb dijo: «Al que derrote y conquiste a Quiriat Séfer, yo le daré como esposa a mi hija Acsá».
13 Othniel, son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz, captured it; so Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah in marriage.	13 El que la conquistó fue Otniel, hijo de Quenaz y hermano menor de Caleb, y este le dio como esposa a su hija Acsá.
14 On the day of her marriage to Othniel she induced him to ask her father for some land. Then, as she alighted from the ass, Caleb asked her, "What is troubling you?"	14 Cuando ella llegó a la casa de su esposo, este le sugirió que pidiera un campo a su padre. Ella se bajó del asno, y Caleb le preguntó: «Qué quieres?».
15 Give me an additional gift," she answered. "Since you have assigned land in the Negeb to me, give me also pools of water." So Caleb gave her the upper and the lower pool.	15 «Quiero que me hagas un regalo, le respondió; ya que me has mandado al territorio de Négueb, concédeme al menos un manantial». Y él le dio el manantial de Arriba y el manantial de Abajo.
16 The descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, came up with the Judahites from the city of palms to the desert at Arad (which is in the Negeb). But they later left and settled among the Amalekites.	16 Los del clan de Jobab, el quenita, que había sido suegro de Moisés, subieron con la tribu de Judá desde la ciudad de las Palmeras hasta el desierto de Judá, al sur de Arad, y se establecieron entre los amalecitas.
17 Judah then went with his brother Simeon, and they defeated the Canaanites who dwelt in Zephath. After having doomed the city to destruction, they renamed it Hormah.	17 Judá, por su parte, su fue con su hermano Simeón. Ellos derrotaron a los cananeos que habitaban en Sefat y consagraron la ciudad al exterminio total; por eso, la ciudad se llamó Jormá.
18 Judah, however, did not occupy Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, or Ekron with its territory.	18 Pero Judá no pudo apoderarse de Gaza y su territorio, ni de Ascalón y su territorio, ni de Ecrón y su territorio.
19 Since the LORD was with Judah, he gained possession of the mountain region. Yet he could not dislodge those who lived on the plain, because they had iron chariots.	19 El Señor estaba con Judá, y este pudo ocupar la Montaña, pero no logró desposeer a los habitantes de la llanura, porque estaban equipados con carros de hierro.
20 As Moses had commanded, Hebron was given to Caleb, who then drove from it the three sons of Anak.	20 De acuerdo con lo establecido por Moisés, Hebrón fue asignada a Caleb, y él expulsó de allí a los tres hijos de Anac.
21 The Benjaminites did not dislodge the Jebusites who dwelt in Jerusalem, with the result that the Jebusites live in Jerusalem beside the Benjaminites to the present day.	21 La tribu de Benjamín, en cambio, no pudo desposeer a los jebuseos que habitaban en Jerusalén. Por eso los Jebuseos continúan habitando en Jerusalén con la tribu de Benjamín, hasta el día de hoy.
22 The house of Joseph, too, marched up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.	22 La casa de José, por su parte, subió contra Betel, y el Señor estaba con ella.
23 The house of Joseph had a reconnaissance made of Bethel, which formerly was called Luz.	23 La casa de José envió espías a Betel –la ciudad que antiguamente se llamaba Luz–
24 The scouts saw a man coming out of the city and said to him, "Show us a way into the city, and we will spare you."	24 y cuando los espías vieron a un hombre que salía de la ciudad, le dijeron: «Muéstranos el acceso a la ciudad, y te perdonaremos la vida».
25 He showed them a way into the city, which they then put to the sword; but they let the man and his whole clan go free.	25 El les indicó el acceso a la ciudad, y ellos pasaron a sus habitantes al filo de la espada, pero dejaron ir a aquel hombre con toda su familia.
26 He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, as it is still called.	26 El hombre se dirigió al país de los hititas, y fundó una ciudad, a la que llamó Luz. Este es el nombre que tiene hasta el día de hoy.
27 Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean with its towns or of Taanach with its towns. Neither did he dislodge the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, those of Ibleam and its towns, or those of Megiddo and its towns. The Canaanites kept their hold in this district.	27 Manasés, en cambio, no pudo adueñarse de Bet Seán y de Tanac con sus respectivas ciudades dependientes. Tampoco desposeyó a los habitantes de Dor, de Ibleam y de Meguido, con sus respectivas ciudades dependientes, sino que los cananeos continuaron ocupando ese territorio.
28 When the Israelites grew stronger, they impressed the Canaanites as laborers, but did not drive them out.	28 Pero cuando Israel se hizo más fuerte, obligó a los cananeos a pagar tributo, aunque no llegó a desposeerlos.
29 Similarly, the Ephraimites did not drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, and so the Canaanites live in Gezer in their midst.	29 Efraím no pudo desposeer a los cananeos que habitaban en Guézer, de manera que estos continuaron viviendo en medio de él, en Guézer.
30 Zebulun did not dislodge the inhabitants of Kitron or those of Nahalol; the Canaanites live among them, but have become forced laborers.	30 Zabulón no desposeyó a los habitantes de Quitrón ni a los de Nahalol: los cananeos continuaron viviendo en medio de él, pero fueron obligados a pagar tributo.
31 Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or those of Sidon, or take possession of Mahaleb, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik or Rehob.	31 Aser no pudo desposeer a los habitantes de Acó, de Sidón, de Majleb, de Aczib, de Afric y de Rejob.
32 The Asherites live among the Canaanite natives of the land, whom they have not dislodged.	32 Por eso la tribu de Aser se estableció en medio de los cananeos que ocupaban el país, ya que no pudieron desposeerlos.
33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh or those of Beth-anath, and so they live among the Canaanite natives of the land. However, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath have become forced laborers for them.	33 Tampoco Neftalí pudo desposeer a los habitantes de Bet Semes, ni a los de Bet Anát, y se estableció en medio de los cananeos que habitaban en el país, Pero los habitantes de Bet Semes y de Bet Anát fueron obligados a pagar tributo.
34 The Amorites hemmed in the Danites in the mountain region, not permitting them to go down into the plain.	34 Los amorreos obligaron a la tribu de Dan a replegarse hacia la región montañosa, impidiéndosele bajar hasta el llano.
35 The Amorites had a firm hold in Harheres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but as the house of Joseph gained the upper hand, they were impressed as laborers.	35 Los amorreos pudieron permanecer en Har Jéres, en Aialón y en Salbím, pero cuando la casa de José afianzó su poder, fueron obligados a pagar tributo.
36 The territory of the Amorites extended from the Akrabbim pass to Sela and beyond.	36 En cuanto a los edomitas, su frontera se extiende desde la cuesta de Acrabím, a partir de la Roca, y continúa hacia arriba.
