1 After the death of Joshua the Israelites consulted the LORD, asking, "Who shall be first among us to attack the Canaanites and to do battle with them?"	1 Dopo la morte di Giosuè, gli Israeliti consultarono il Signore dicendo: "Chi di noi andrà per primo a combattere contro i Cananei?".
2 The LORD answered, "Judah shall attack: I have delivered the land into his power."	2 Il Signore rispose: "Andrà Giuda: ecco, ho messo il paese nelle sue mani".
3 Judah then said to his brother Simeon, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, and let us engage the Canaanites in battle. I will likewise accompany you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him.	3 Allora Giuda disse a Simeone suo fratello: "Vieni con me nel paese, che mi è toccato in sorte, e combattiamo contro i Cananei; poi anch'io verrò con te in quello che ti è toccato in sorte". Simeone andò con lui.
4 When the forces of Judah attacked, the LORD delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their power, and they slew ten thousand of them in Bezek.	4 Giuda dunque si mosse e il Signore mise nelle loro mani i Cananei e i Perizziti; sconfissero a Bezek diecimila uomini.
5 It was in Bezek that they came upon Adonibezek and fought against him. When they defeated the Canaanites and Perizzites,	5 Incontrato Adoni-Bezek a Bezek, l'attaccarono e sconfissero i Cananei e i Perizziti.
6 Adonibezek fled. They set out in pursuit, and when they caught him, cut off his thumbs and his big toes.	6 Adoni-Bezek fuggì, ma essi lo inseguirono, lo catturarono e gli amputarono i pollici delle mani e dei piedi.
7 At this Adonibezek said, "Seventy kings, with their thumbs and big toes cut off, used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so has God repaid me." 8 (The Judahites fought against Jerusalem and captured it, putting it to the sword; then they destroyed the city by fire.)	8 I figli di Giuda attaccarono Gerusalemme e la presero; la passarono a fil di spada e l'abbandonarono alle fiamme.
9 Afterward the Judahites went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the mountain region, in the Negeb, and in the foothills.	9 Poi andarono a combattere contro i Cananei che abitavano le montagne, il Negheb e la Sefela.
10 Judah also marched against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron, which was formerly called Kiriath-arba, and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.	10 Giuda marciò contro i Cananei che abitavano a Ebron, che prima si chiamava Kiriat-Arba, e sconfisse Sesai, Achiman e Talmai.
11 From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir, which was formerly called Kiriath-sepher.	11 Di là andò contro gli abitanti di Debir, che prima si chiamava Kiriat-Sefer.
12 And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Achsah in marriage to the one who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it."	12 Allora Caleb disse: "A chi batterà Kiriat-Sefer e la prenderà io darò in moglie Acsa mia figlia".
13 Othniel, son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz, captured it; so Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah in marriage.	13 La prese Otniel, figlio di Kenaz, fratello minore di Caleb, e questi gli diede in moglie sua figlia Acsa.
14 On the day of her marriage to Othniel she induced him to ask her father for some land. Then, as she alighted from the ass, Caleb asked her, "What is troubling you?"	14 Ora, mentre andava dal marito, egli la indusse a chiedere un campo a suo padre. 15 Give me an additional gift," she answered. "Since you have assigned land in the Negeb to me, give me also pools of water." 16 The descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, came up with the Judahites from the city of palms to the desert at Arad (which is in the Negeb). But they later left and settled among the Amalekites.	16 I figli del suocero di Mosè, il Kenita, salirono dalla città delle Palme con i figli di Giuda nel deserto di Giuda, a mezzogiorno di Arad; andarono dunque e si stabilirono in mezzo al popolo.
17 Judah then went with his brother Simeon, and they defeated the Canaanites who dwelt in Zephath. After having doomed the city to destruction, they renamed it Hormah.	17 Poi Giuda marciò con Simeone suo fratello: sconfissero i Cananei che abitavano in Sefat, votarono allo sterminio la città, che fu chiamata Corma.
18 Judah, however, did not occupy Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, or Ekron with its territory.	18 Giuda prese anche Gaza con il suo territorio, Ascalon con il suo territorio ed Ekron con il suo territorio.
19 Since the LORD was with Judah, he gained possession of the mountain region. Yet he could not dislodge those who lived on the plain, because they had iron chariots.	19 Il Signore fu con Giuda, che scacciò gli abitanti delle montagne, ma non poté espellere gli abitanti della pianura, perché muniti di carri di ferro.
20 As Moses had commanded, Hebron was given to Caleb, who then drove from it the three sons of Anak.	20 Come Mosè aveva ordinato, Ebron fu data a Caleb, che da essa scacciò i tre figli di Anak.
21 The Benjaminites did not dislodge the Jebusites who dwelt in Jerusalem, with the result that the Jebusites live in Jerusalem beside the Benjaminites to the present day.	21 I figli di Beniamino non scacciarono i Gebusei che abitavano Gerusalemme, perciò i Gebusei abitano con i figli di Beniamino in Gerusalemme fino ad oggi.
22 The house of Joseph, too, marched up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.	22 Anche la casa di Giuseppe marciò contro Betel e il Signore fu con loro.
23 The house of Joseph had a reconnaissance made of Bethel, which formerly was called Luz.	23 La casa di Giuseppe mandò a esplorare Betel, città che prima si chiamava Luz.
24 The scouts saw a man coming out of the city and said to him, "Show us a way into the city, and we will spare you."	24 Gli esploratori videro un uomo che usciva dalla città e gli dissero: "Insegnaci una via di accesso alla città e noi ti faremo grazia".
25 He showed them a way into the city, which they then put to the sword; but they let the man and his whole clan go free.	25 Egli insegnò loro la via di accesso alla città ed essi passarono la città a fil di spada, ma risparmiarono quell'uomo con tutta la sua famiglia.
26 He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, as it is still called.	26 Quell'uomo andò nel paese degli Hittiti e vi edificò una città che chiamò Luz: questo è il suo nome fino ad oggi.
27 Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean with its towns or of Taanach with its towns. Neither did he dislodge the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, those of Ibleam and its towns, or those of Megiddo and its towns. 28 When the Israelites grew stronger, they impressed the Canaanites as laborers, but did not drive them out.	28 Quando Israele divenne più forte, costrinse ai lavori forzati i Cananei, ma non li scacciò del tutto.
29 Similarly, the Ephraimites did not drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, and so the Canaanites live in Gezer in their midst.	29 Nemmeno Efraim scacciò i Cananei, che abitavano a Ghezer, perciò i Cananei abitarono in Ghezer in mezzo ad Efraim.
30 Zebulun did not dislodge the inhabitants of Kitron or those of Nahalol; the Canaanites live among them, but have become forced laborers.	30 Zàbulon non scacciò gli abitanti di Kitron, né gli abitanti di Naalol; i Cananei abitarono in mezzo a Zàbulon e furono ridotti in schiavitù.
31 Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or those of Sidon, or take possession of Mahaleb, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik or Rehob.	31 Aser non scacciò gli abitanti di Acco, né gli abitanti di Sidòne, né quelli di Aclab, di Aczib, di Elba, di Afik, di Recob;
32 The Asherites live among the Canaanite natives of the land, whom they have not dislodged.	32 i figli di Aser si stabilirono in mezzo ai Cananei che abitavano il paese, perché non li avevano scacciati.
33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh or those of Beth-anath, and so they live among the Canaanite natives of the land. However, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath have become forced laborers for them.	33 Nèftali non scacciò gli abitanti di Bet-Semes, né gli abitanti di Bet-Anat e si stabilì in mezzo ai Cananei che abitavano il paese; ma gli abitanti di Bet-Semes e di Bet-Anat furono da loro costretti ai lavori forzati.
34 The Amorites hemmed in the Danites in the mountain region, not permitting them to go down into the plain.	34 Gli Amorrei respinsero i figli di Dan sulle montagne e non li lasciarono scendere nella pianura.
35 The Amorites had a firm hold in Harheres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but as the house of Joseph gained the upper hand, they were impressed as laborers.	35 Gli Amorrei continuarono ad abitare Ar-Cheres, Aialon e Saalbim; ma la mano della casa di Giuseppe si aggravò su di loro e furono costretti ai lavori forzati.
