See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.1 Behold what manner of charity the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called, and should be the sons of God. Therefore the world knoweth not us, because it knew not him.
Beloved, we are God's children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.2 Dearly beloved, we are now the sons of God; and it hath not yet appeared what we shall be. We know, that, when he shall appear, we shall be like to him: because we shall see him as he is.
Everyone who has this hope based on him makes himself pure, as he is pure.3 And every one that hath this hope in him, sanctifieth himself, as he also is holy.
Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness, for sin is lawlessness.4 Whosoever committeth sin commmitteth also iniquity; and sin is iniquity.
You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.5 And you know that he appeared to take away our sins, and in him there is no sin.
No one who remains in him sins; no one who sins has seen him or known him.6 Whosoever abideth in him, sinneth not; and whosoever sinneth, hath not seen him, nor known him.
Children, let no one deceive you. The person who acts in righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous.7 Little children, let no man deceive you. He that doth justice is just, even as he is just.
Whoever sins belongs to the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil.8 He that commmitteth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
No one who is begotten by God commits sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot sin because he is begotten by God.9 Whosoever is born of God, commmitteth not sin: for his seed abideth in him, and he can not sin, because he is born of God.
In this way, the children of God and the children of the devil are made plain; no one who fails to act in righteousness belongs to God, nor anyone who does not love his brother.10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. Whosoever is not just, is not of God, nor he that loveth not his brother.
For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: we should love one another,11 For this is the declaration, which you have heard from the beginning, that you should love one another.
unlike Cain who belonged to the evil one and slaughtered his brother. Why did he slaughter him? Because his own works were evil, and those of his brother righteous.12 Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one, and killed his brother. And wherefore did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked: and his brother's just.
Do not be amazed, (then,) brothers, if the world hates you.13 Wonder not, brethren, if the world hate you.
We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers. Whoever does not love remains in death.14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not, abideth in death.
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in himself.
The way we came to know love was that he laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.16 In this we have known the charity of God, because he hath laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him?17 He that hath the substance of this world, and shall see his brother in need, and shall shut up his bowels from him: how doth the charity of God abide in him?
Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.18 My little children, let us not love in word, nor in tongue, but in deed, and in truth.
(Now) this is how we shall know that we belong to the truth and reassure our hearts before him19 In this we know that we are of the truth: and in his sight shall persuade our hearts.
in whatever our hearts condemn, for God is greater than our hearts and knows everything.20 For if our heart reprehend us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
Beloved, if (our) hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence in God21 Dearly beloved, if our heart do not reprehend us, we have confidence towards God:
and receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.22 And whatsoever we shall ask, we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.
And his commandment is this: we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us.23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ: and love one another, as he hath given commandment unto us.
Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them, and the way we know that he remains in us is from the Spirit that he gave us.24 And he that keepeth his commandments, abideth in him, and he in him. And in this we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
