1 Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem, summoning their elders, their leaders, their judges and their officers. When they stood in ranks before God,	1 Giosuè radunò a Sichem tutte le tribù di Israele, poi convocò gli anziani di Israele con i capi, gli ispettori i quali si disposero alla presenza di Dio.
2 Joshua addressed all the people: "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: In times past your fathers, down to Terah, father of Abraham and Nahor, dwelt beyond the River and served other gods.	2 Giosuè parlò allora a tutto il popolo: «Così dice Jahvè, Dio di Israele: “Al di là del fiume abitarono anticamente i vostri padri: Terakh padre di Abramo e di Nakhor che servirono gli dèi stranieri.
3 But I brought your father Abraham from the region beyond the River and led him through the entire land of Canaan. I made his descendants numerous, and gave him Isaac.	3 Allora io presi il vostro padre Abramo al di là del fiume e gli feci percorrere tutto il paese di Canaan: moltiplicai la sua stirpe e gli diedi Isacco.
4 To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I assigned the mountain region of Seir in which to settle, while Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.	4 A Isacco diedi Giacobbe ed Esaù. A Esaù diedi in proprietà la montagna di Seir, mentre Giacobbe e i suoi figli discesero in Egitto.
5 "Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and smote Egypt with the prodigies which I wrought in her midst.	5 Poi mandai Mosè e Aronne e punii l’Egitto con i prodigi che operai in mezzo a esso. Poi feci uscire voi.
6 Afterward I led you out of Egypt, and when you reached the sea, the Egyptians pursued your fathers to the Red Sea with chariots and horsemen.	6 Feci dunque uscire’ i vostri padri dall’Egitto e voi arrivaste al mare. Gli Egiziani inseguirono i vostri padri con carri e cavalieri fino al Mare dei Giunchi.
7 Because they cried out to the LORD, he put darkness between your people and the Egyptians, upon whom he brought the sea so that it engulfed them. After you witnessed what I did to Egypt, and dwelt a long time in the desert,	7 Essi gridarono allora a Jahvè che stese una spessa nebbia fra voi e gli Egiziani e spinse sopra di loro il mare che li sommerse. I vostri occhi hanno visto ciò che ho fatto in Egitto! Poi avete dimorato per lungo tempo, nel deserto.
8 I brought you into the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your power. You took possession of their land, and I destroyed them (the two kings of the Amorites) before you.	8 In seguito vi condussi nel paese degli Amorrei che abitavano al di là del Giordano; essi combattevano contro di voi, ma io li ho messi nelle vostre mani; voi occupaste il loro paese e io li distrussi innanzi a voi.
9 Then Balak, son of Zippor, king of Moab, prepared to war against Israel. He summoned Balaam, son of Beor, to curse you;	9 Anche Balak figlio di Zippor, re di Moab, si levò a combattere contro Israele; egli mandò a chiamare Balaam figlio di Beor, perché vi maledicesse.
10 but I would not listen to Balaam. On the contrary, he had to bless you, and I saved you from him.	10 Ma io non volli ascoltare Balaam: egli vi dovette benedire e io vi liberai dalle sue mani.
11 Once you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho, the men of Jericho fought against you, but I delivered them also into your power.	11 Quando poi, passato il Giordano, arrivaste a Gerico, gli abitanti di Gerico combatterono contro di voi come gli Amorrei, i Ferezei, i Cananei, gli Hittiti, i Gergesei, gli Hivvei e i Gebusei, ma io li misi nelle vostre mani.
12 And I sent the hornets ahead of you which drove them (the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites) out of your way; it was not your sword or your bow.	12 Io ho mandato innanzi a voi i calabroni; essi hanno cacciato dinanzi a voi quelle genti e i due re degli Amorrei, non già la tua spada e il tuo arco.
13 "I gave you a land which you had not tilled and cities which you had not built, to dwell in; you have eaten of vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.	13 Così vi ho concesso un paese che non avete coltivato e città che non e costruito, eppure le abitate e mangiate i frutti delle vigne e degli oliveti che non avete piantato”.
14 "Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve him completely and sincerely. Cast out the gods your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.	14 Temete dunque Jahvè, servitelo con integrità e sincerità, eliminate gli dèi che i vostri padri hanno servito al di là del fiume e nell’Egitto e servite Jahvè.
15 If it does not please you to serve the LORD, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."	15 Se non piace ai vostri occhi servire Jahvè, Scegliete oggi chi volete servire, gli dèi che i vostri padri hanno servito al di là del fiume oppure gli dèi degli Amorrei nel paese dei quali abitate. Io però e la mia famiglia vogliamo servire Jahvè».
16 But the people answered, "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD for the service of other gods.	16 Il popolo rispose e disse: «Lungi da noi il pensiero di abbandonare Jahvè per servire altri dèi.
17 For it was the LORD, our God, who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, out of a state of slavery. He performed those great miracles before our very eyes and protected us along our entire journey and among all the peoples through whom we passed.	17 Jahvè nostro Dio è colui che ha fatto uscire noi e i nostri padri dalla terra d’Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù, che ha operato innanzi ai nostri occhi questi grandi prodigi e che ci ha protetto in tutto il cammino che abbiamo percorso e presso tutti i popoli attraverso i quali siamo passati.
18 At our approach the LORD drove out (all the peoples, including) the Amorites who dwelt in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God."	18 Jahvè ha cacciato innanzi a noi tutte le genti e gli Amorrei che abitano il paese. Quindi noi vogliamo servire Jahvè perché egli è il nostro Dio».
19 Joshua in turn said to the people, "You may not be able to serve the LORD, for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God who will not forgive your transgressions or your sins.	19 Allora Giosuè disse al popolo: «Voi non potete servire Jahvè perché egli è un Dio santo, un Dio geloso che non perdonerà né le vostre defezioni né i vostri peccati.
20 If, after the good he has done for you, you forsake the LORD and serve strange gods, he will do evil to you and destroy you."	20 Se voi abbandonate Jahvè per servire dèi stranieri, egli vi si volterà contro e, dopo avervi tanto beneficato, vi manderà del male e vi sterminerà».
21 But the people answered Joshua, "We will still serve the LORD."	21 Il popolo rispose a Giosuè: «No, noi vogliamo servire Jahvè!»
22 Joshua therefore said to the people, "You are your own witnesses that you have chosen to serve the LORD." They replied, "We are, indeed!"	22 Giosuè disse al popolo: «Voi siete testimoni contro di voi che vi siete scelto Jahvè per servirlo». Essi risposero: «Noi siamo testimoni».
23 "Now, therefore, put away the strange gods that are among you and turn your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel."	23 «Ebbene, eliminate da voi gli dèi stranieri e rivolgete il cuore a Jahvè, Dio di Israele».
24 Then the people promised Joshua, "We will serve the LORD, our God, and obey his voice."	24 Il popolo rispose a Giosuè: «Noi vogliamo servire Jahvè nostro Dio e ascoltare la sua voce».
25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem,	25 Così in quel giorno Giosuè strinse un patto con il popolo e gli diede leggi e ordini a Sichem.
26 which he recorded in the book of the law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was in the sanctuary of the LORD.	26 Poi scrisse queste parole nel libro della legge di Jahvè e, presa poi una grande pietra, la eresse ivi, sotto il terebinto che è nel santuario di Jahvè.
27 And Joshua said to all the people, "This stone shall be our witness, for it has heard all the words which the LORD spoke to us. It shall be a witness against you, should you wish to deny your God."	27 Giosuè disse a tutto il popolo: «Vedete: questa pietra sarà fra di noi in testimonianza, perché essa ha udito tutte le parole che Jahvè ci ha detto; essa sarà come testimonio contro di voi affinché non rinneghiate il vostro Dio».
28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to his own heritage.	28 Quindi Giosuè accomiatò il popolo e ognuno ritornò alle proprie terre.
29 After these events, Joshua, son of Nun, servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten.	29 Dopo questi fatti, Giosuè figlio di Nun, servitore di Jahvè, morì all’età di centodieci anni
30 He was buried within the limits of his heritage at Timnath-serah in the mountain region of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash.	30 e fu sepolto nel territorio di sua proprietà a Timnat-Serakh che è sulla montagna di Efraim, a nord del monte Gaash.
31 Israel served the LORD during the entire lifetime of Joshua and that of the elders who outlived Joshua and knew all that the LORD had done for Israel.	31 Israele servì Jahvè per tutto il tempo della vita di Giosuè e per tutto il tempo degli anziani che sopravvissero a Giosuè, i quali avevano conosciuto tutte le opere che Jahvè aveva compiuto a favore di Israele.
32 The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried in Shechem in the plot of ground Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of money. This was a heritage of the descendants of Joseph.	32 Le ossa di Giuseppe, che i figli di Israele avevano trasportato dall’Egitto, furono seppellite a Sichem nella parte del campo che Giacobbe aveva comprato per cento pezzi d’argento dai figli di Khamor, padre di Sichem; questa restò in eredità ai figli di Giuseppe.
33 When Eleazar, son of Aaron, also died, he was buried on the hill which had been given to his son Phinehas in the mountain region of Ephraim.	33 Poi morì Eleazaro figlio di Aronne e fu sepolto a Gabaa, città di Pinkhas suo figlio, luogo che gli era stato assegnato sulla montagna di Efraim.
