NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
Now Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that, in the capture and destruction of Ai, Joshua had done to that city and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king. He heard also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made their peace with Israel, remaining among them,1 Quæ cum audisset Adonisedec rex Jerusalem, quod scilicet cepisset Josue Hai, et subvertisset eam (sicut enim fecerat Jericho et regi ejus, sic fecit Hai et regi illius), et quod transfugissent Gabaonitæ ad Israël, et essent fœderati eorum,
and that there was great fear abroad, because Gibeon was large enough for a royal city, larger even than the city of Ai, and all its men were brave.2 timuit valde. Urbs enim magna erat Gabaon, et una civitatum regalium, et major oppido Hai, omnesque bellatores ejus fortissimi.
So Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, sent for Hoham, king of Hebron, Piram, king of Jarmuth, Japhia, king of Lachish, and Debir, king of Eglon,3 Misit ergo Adonisedec rex Jerusalem ad Oham regem Hebron, et ad Pharam regem Jerimoth, ad Japhia quoque regem Lachis, et ad Dabir regem Eglon, dicens :
to come to his aid for an attack on Gibeon, since it had concluded peace with Joshua and the Israelites.4 Ad me ascendite, et ferte præsidium, ut expugnemus Gabaon, quare transfugerit ad Josue, et ad filios Israël.
The five Amorite kings, of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon, united all their forces and marched against Gibeon, where they took up siege positions.5 Congregati igitur ascenderunt quinque reges Amorrhæorum : rex Jerusalem, rex Hebron, rex Jerimoth, rex Lachis, rex Eglon, simul cum exercitibus suis : et castrametati sunt circa Gabaon, oppugnantes eam.
Thereupon, the men of Gibeon sent an appeal to Joshua in his camp at Gilgal: "Do not abandon your servants. Come up here quickly and save us. Help us, because all the Amorite kings of the mountain country have joined forces against us."6 Habitatores autem Gabaon urbis obsessæ miserunt ad Josue, qui tunc morabatur in castris apud Galgalam, et dixerunt ei : Ne retrahas manus tuas ab auxilio servorum tuorum : ascende cito, et libera nos, ferque præsidium : convenerunt enim adversum nos omnes reges Amorrhæorum, qui habitant in montanis.
So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his picked troops and the rest of his soldiers.7 Ascenditque Josue de Galgalis, et omnis exercitus bellatorum cum eo, viri fortissimi.
Meanwhile the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your power. Not one of them will be able to withstand you."8 Dixitque Dominus ad Josue : Ne timeas eos : in manus enim tuas tradidi illos : nullus ex eis tibi resistere poterit.
And when Joshua made his surprise attack upon them after an all-night march from Gilgal,9 Irruit itaque Josue super eos repente, tota nocte ascendens de Galgalis.
the LORD threw them into disorder before him. The Israelites inflicted a great slaughter on them at Gibeon and pursued them down the Beth-horon slope, harrassing them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.10 Et conturbavit eos Dominus a facie Israël : contrivitque plaga magna in Gabaon, ac persecutus est eos per viam ascensus Bethoron, et percussit usque Azeca et Maceda.
While they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon, the LORD hurled great stones from the sky above them all the way to Azekah, killing many. More died from these hailstones than the Israelites slew with the sword.11 Cumque fugerent filios Israël, et essent in descensu Bethoron, Dominus misit super eos lapides magnos de cælo usque ad Azeca : et mortui sunt multo plures lapidibus grandinis, quam quos gladio percusserant filii Israël.
On this day, when the LORD delivered up the Amorites to the Israelites,12 Tunc locutus est Josue Domino, in die qua tradidit Amorrhæum in conspectu filiorum Israël, dixitque coram eis : Sol, contra Gabaon ne movearis,
et luna contra vallem Ajalon.
And the sun stood still,13 Steteruntque sol et luna,
donec ulcisceretur se gens de inimicis suis. Nonne scriptum est hoc in libro justorum ? Stetit itaque sol in medio cæli, et non festinavit occumbere spatio unius diei.
Never before or since was there a day like this, when the LORD obeyed the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.14 Non fuit antea nec postea tam longa dies, obediente Domino voci hominis, et pugnante pro Israël.
(Then Joshua and all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.)15 Reversusque est Josue cum omni Israël in castra Galgalæ.
Meanwhile the five kings who had fled, hid in a cave at Makkedah.16 Fugerant enim quinque reges et se absconderant in spelunca urbis Maceda.
When Joshua was told that the five kings had been discovered hiding in a cave at Makkedah,17 Nuntiatumque est Josue quod inventi essent quinque reges latentes in spelunca urbis Maceda.
he said, "Roll large stones to the mouth of the cave and post men over it to guard them.18 Qui præcepit sociis, et ait : Volvite saxa ingentia ad os speluncæ, et ponite viros industrios, qui clausos custodiant :
But do not remain there yourselves. Pursue your enemies, and harry them in the rear. Do not allow them to escape to their cities, for the LORD, your God, has delivered them into your power."19 vos autem nolite stare, sed persequimini hostes, et extremos quosque fugientium cædite : nec dimittatis eos urbium suarum intrare præsidia, quos tradidit Dominus Deus in manus vestras.
Once Joshua and the Israelites had finally inflicted the last blows in this very great slaughter, and the survivors had escaped from them into the fortified cities,20 Cæsis ergo adversariis plaga magna, et usque ad internecionem pene consumptis, hi qui Israël effugere potuerunt, ingressi sunt civitates munitas.
all the army returned safely to Joshua and the camp at Makkedah, no man uttering a sound against the Israelites.21 Reversusque est omnis exercitus ad Josue in Maceda, ubi tunc erant castra, sani et integro numero : nullusque contra filios Israël mutire ausus est.
Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring out those five kings to me."22 Præcepitque Josue, dicens : Aperite os speluncæ, et producite ad me quinque reges, qui in ea latitant.
Obediently, they brought out to him from the cave the five kings, of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon.23 Feceruntque ministri ut sibi fuerat imperatum : et eduxerunt ad eum quinque reges de spelunca, regem Jerusalem, regem Hebron, regem Jerimoth, regem Lachis, regem Eglon.
When they had done so, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the soldiers who had marched with him, "Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings." They came forward and put their feet upon their necks.24 Cumque educti essent ad eum, vocavit omnes viros Israël, et ait ad principes exercitus qui secum erant : Ite, et ponite pedes super colla regum istorum. Qui cum perrexissent, et subjectorum colla pedibus calcarent,
Then Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed, be firm and steadfast. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies against whom you fight."25 rursum ait ad eos : Nolite timere, nec paveatis : confortamini, et estote robusti : sic enim faciet Dominus cunctis hostibus vestris, adversum quos dimicatis.
Thereupon Joshua struck and killed them, and hanged them on five trees, where they remained hanging until evening.26 Percussitque Josue, et interfecit eos, atque suspendit super quinque stipites : fueruntque suspensi usque ad vesperum.
At sunset they were removed from the trees at the command of Joshua and cast into the cave where they had hidden; over the mouth of the cave large stones were placed, which remain until this very day.27 Cumque occumberet sol, præcepit sociis ut deponerent eos de patibulis. Qui depositos projecerunt in speluncam in qua latuerant, et posuerunt super os ejus saxa ingentia, quæ permanent usque in præsens.
Makkedah, too, Joshua captured and put to the sword at that time. He fulfilled the doom on the city, on its king, and on every person in it, leaving no survivors. Thus he did to the king of Makkedah what he had done to the king of Jericho.28 Eodem quoque die, Macedam cepit Josue, et percussit eam in ore gladii, regemque illius interfecit, et omnes habitatores ejus : non dimisit in ea saltem parvas reliquias. Fecitque regi Maceda sicut fecerat regi Jericho.
Joshua then passed on with all Israel from Makkedah to Libnah, which he attacked.29 Transivit autem cum omni Israël de Maceda in Lebna, et pugnabat contra eam :
Libnah also, with its king, the LORD delivered into the power of Israel. He put it to the sword with every person there, leaving no survivors. Thus he did to its king what he had done to the king of Jericho.30 quam tradidit Dominus cum rege suo in manus Israël : percusseruntque urbem in ore gladii, et omnes habitatores ejus : non dimiserunt in ea ullas reliquias. Feceruntque regi Lebna sicut fecerant regi Jericho.
Joshua next passed on with all Israel from Libnah to Lachish, where they set up a camp during the attack.31 De Lebna transivit in Lachis cum omni Israël : et exercitu per gyrum disposito, oppugnabat eam.
The LORD delivered Lachish into the power of Israel, so that on the second day Joshua captured it and put it to the sword with every person in it, just as he had done to Libnah.32 Tradiditque Dominus Lachis in manus Israël, et cepit eam die altero, atque percussit in ore gladii, omnemque animam quæ fuerat in ea, sicut fecerat Lebna.
At that time Horam, king of Gezer, came up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his people, leaving him no survivors.33 Eo tempore ascendit Horam rex Gazer, ut auxiliaretur Lachis : quem percussit Josue cum omni populo ejus usque ad internecionem.
From Lachish, Joshua passed on with all Israel to Eglon; encamping near it, they attacked it34 Transivitque de Lachis in Eglon, et circumdedit,
and captured it the same day, putting it to the sword. He fulfilled the doom that day on every person in it, just as he had done at Lachish.35 atque expugnavit eam eadem die : percussitque in ore gladii omnes animas quæ erant in ea, juxta omnia quæ fecerat Lachis.
From Eglon, Joshua went up with all Israel to Hebron, which they attacked36 Ascendit quoque cum omni Israël de Eglon in Hebron, et pugnavit contra eam :
and captured. They put it to the sword with its king, all its towns, and every person there, leaving no survivors, just as Joshua had done to Eglon. He fulfilled the doom on it and on every person there.37 cepit eam, et percussit in ore gladii, regem quoque ejus, et omnia oppida regionis illius, universasque animas quæ in ea fuerant commoratæ : non reliquit in ea ullas reliquias : sicut fecerat Eglon, sic fecit et Hebron, cuncta quæ in ea reperit consumens gladio.
Then Joshua and all Israel turned back to Debir and attacked it,38 Inde reversus in Dabir,
capturing it with its king and all its towns. They put them to the sword and fulfilled the doom on every person there, leaving no survivors. Thus was done to Debir and its king what had been done to Hebron, as well as to Libnah and its king.39 cepit eam atque vastavit : regem quoque ejus atque omnia per circuitum oppida percussit in ore gladii : non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias : sicut fecerat Hebron et Lebna et regibus earum, sic fecit Dabir et regi illius.
Joshua conquered the entire country; the mountain regions, the Negeb, the foothills, and the mountain slopes, with all their kings. He left no survivors, but fulfilled the doom on all who lived there, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.40 Percussit itaque Josue omnem terram montanam et meridianam atque campestrem, et Asedoth, cum regibus suis : non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias, sed omne quod spirare poterat interfecit, sicut præceperat ei Dominus Deus Israël,
Joshua conquered from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen to Gibeon.41 a Cadesbarne usque Gazam. Omnem terram Gosen usque Gabaon,
All these kings and their lands Joshua captured in a single campaign, for the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.42 universosque reges, et regiones eorum uno impetu cepit atque vastavit : Dominus enim Deus Israël pugnavit pro eo.
Thereupon Joshua with all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.43 Reversusque est cum omni Israël ad locum castrorum in Galgala.
