Joshua 10

1 Now Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that, in the capture and destruction of Ai, Joshua had done to that city and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king. He heard also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made their peace with Israel, remaining among them,	1 Quando Adonì-Sedek, re di Gerusalemme, venne a sapere che Giosuè aveva conquistato Ai e l’aveva votata allo sterminio e che, come aveva fatto a Gerico e al suo re, aveva fatto ad Ai e al suo re, e che quelli di Gàbaon avevano fatto pace con gli Israeliti e si trovavano ormai in mezzo a loro,
2 and that there was great fear abroad, because Gibeon was large enough for a royal city, larger even than the city of Ai, and all its men were brave.	2 ebbe grande paura, perché Gàbaon era grande come una delle città regali, ed era più grande di Ai e tutti i suoi uomini erano valorosi.
3 So Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, sent for Hoham, king of Hebron, Piram, king of Jarmuth, Japhia, king of Lachish, and Debir, king of Eglon,	3 Allora Adonì-Sedek, re di Gerusalemme, mandò questo messaggio a Oam, re di Ebron, a Piram, re di Iarmut, a Iafìa, re di Lachis e a Debir, re di Eglon:
4 to come to his aid for an attack on Gibeon, since it had concluded peace with Joshua and the Israelites.	4 «Venite ad aiutarmi per attaccare Gàbaon, perché ha fatto pace con Giosuè e con gli Israeliti».
5 The five Amorite kings, of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon, united all their forces and marched against Gibeon, where they took up siege positions.	5 Questi cinque re amorrei – il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon – con tutte le loro truppe si radunarono insieme, andarono ad accamparsi contro Gàbaon e le mossero guerra.
6 Thereupon, the men of Gibeon sent an appeal to Joshua in his camp at Gilgal: "Do not abandon your servants. Come up here quickly and save us. Help us, because all the Amorite kings of the mountain country have joined forces against us."	6 Gli uomini di Gàbaon inviarono allora questa richiesta a Giosuè, all’accampamento di Gàlgala: «Da’ una mano ai tuoi servi! Vieni presto da noi a salvarci e aiutaci, perché si sono alleati contro di noi tutti i re degli Amorrei, che abitano le montagne».
7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his picked troops and the rest of his soldiers.	7 Allora Giosuè salì da Gàlgala con tutto l’esercito e i prodi guerrieri,
8 Meanwhile the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your power. Not one of them will be able to withstand you."	8 e il Signore gli disse: «Non aver paura di loro, perché li consegno in mano tua: nessuno di loro resisterà davanti a te».
9 And when Joshua made his surprise attack upon them after an all-night march from Gilgal,	9 Giosuè piombò su di loro all’improvviso, avendo marciato tutta la notte da Gàlgala.
10 the LORD threw them into disorder before him. The Israelites inflicted a great slaughter on them at Gibeon and pursued them down the Beth-horon slope, harrassing them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.	10 Il Signore li disperse davanti a Israele e inflisse loro una grande sconfitta a Gàbaon, li inseguì sulla via della salita di Bet-Oron e li batté fino ad Azekà e a Makkedà.
11 While they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon, the LORD hurled great stones from the sky above them all the way to Azekah, killing many. More died from these hailstones than the Israelites slew with the sword.	11 Mentre essi fuggivano dinanzi a Israele ed erano alla discesa di Bet-Oron, il Signore lanciò dal cielo su di loro come grosse pietre fino ad Azekà e molti morirono. Morirono per le pietre della grandine più di quanti ne avessero uccisi gli Israeliti con la spada.
12 On this day, when the LORD delivered up the Amorites to the Israelites,	12 Quando il Signore consegnò gli Amorrei in mano agli Israeliti, Giosuè parlò al Signore e disse alla presenza d’Israele: «Férmati, sole, su Gàbaon, luna, sulla valle di Àialon».
13 And the sun stood still,	13 Si fermò il sole e la luna rimase immobile finché il popolo non si vendicò dei nemici. Non è forse scritto nel libro del Giusto? Stette fermo il sole nel mezzo del cielo, non corse al tramonto un giorno intero.
14 Never before or since was there a day like this, when the LORD obeyed the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.	14 Né prima né poi vi fu giorno come quello, in cui il Signore ascoltò la voce d’un uomo, perché il Signore combatteva per Israele.
15 (Then Joshua and all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.)	15 Giosuè e tutto Israele ritornarono verso l’accampamento di Gàlgala.
16 Meanwhile the five kings who had fled, hid in a cave at Makkedah.	16 Quei cinque re fuggirono e si nascosero nella grotta a Makkedà.
17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been discovered hiding in a cave at Makkedah,	17 Fu riferito a Giosuè: «Sono stati trovati i cinque re, nascosti nella grotta a Makkedà».
18 he said, "Roll large stones to the mouth of the cave and post men over it to guard them.	18 Giosuè disse loro: «Rotolate grosse pietre contro l’entrata della grotta e appostate alcune sentinelle per sorvegliarli.
19 But do not remain there yourselves. Pursue your enemies, and harry them in the rear. Do not allow them to escape to their cities, for the LORD, your God, has delivered them into your power."	19 Voi però non fermatevi: continuate a inseguire i vostri nemici, attaccate la loro retroguardia e non lasciateli rientrare nelle loro città, perché il Signore, vostro Dio, li consegna nelle vostre mani».
20 Once Joshua and the Israelites had finally inflicted the last blows in this very great slaughter, and the survivors had escaped from them into the fortified cities,	20 Quando Giosuè e gli Israeliti ebbero finito di infliggere loro una sconfitta tanto grande da finirli, e i superstiti che erano loro sfuggiti ebbero raggiunto le loro fortezze,
21 all the army returned safely to Joshua and the camp at Makkedah, no man uttering a sound against the Israelites.	21 tutto l’esercito ritornò sano e salvo all’accampamento di Makkedà presso Giosuè. Nessuno osò più muover lingua contro gli Israeliti.
22 Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring out those five kings to me."	22 Giosuè quindi ordinò: «Aprite l’ingresso della grotta e fatemi uscire dalla grotta quei cinque re».
23 Obediently, they brought out to him from the cave the five kings, of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon.	23 Così fecero e gli condussero fuori dalla grotta quei cinque re: il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon.
24 When they had done so, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the soldiers who had marched with him, "Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings." They came forward and put their feet upon their necks.	24 Quando quei re furono fatti uscire dinanzi a Giosuè, egli convocò tutti gli Israeliti e disse agli ufficiali che avevano marciato con lui: «Avvicinatevi e ponete i vostri piedi sul collo di questi re!». Quelli si avvicinarono e posero i piedi sul loro collo.
25 Then Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed, be firm and steadfast. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies against whom you fight."	25 Disse loro Giosuè: «Non temete e non spaventatevi! Coraggio, siate forti, perché così farà il Signore a tutti i nemici contro cui dovrete combattere».
26 Thereupon Joshua struck and killed them, and hanged them on five trees, where they remained hanging until evening.	26 Dopo di ciò, Giosuè li colpì e li fece morire e li fece appendere a cinque alberi. Vi rimasero appesi fino a sera.
27 At sunset they were removed from the trees at the command of Joshua and cast into the cave where they had hidden; over the mouth of the cave large stones were placed, which remain until this very day.	27 All’ora del tramonto, per ordine di Giosuè, li calarono dagli alberi e li gettarono nella grotta dove si erano nascosti. All’ingresso della grotta posero grosse pietre, che sono lì ancora oggi.
28 Makkedah, too, Joshua captured and put to the sword at that time. He fulfilled the doom on the city, on its king, and on every person in it, leaving no survivors. Thus he did to the king of Makkedah what he had done to the king of Jericho.	28 Giosuè in quel giorno conquistò Makkedà: passò a fil di spada la città e il suo re, li votò allo sterminio, con ogni essere vivente che era in essa; non lasciò alcun superstite e trattò il re di Makkedà come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.
29 Joshua then passed on with all Israel from Makkedah to Libnah, which he attacked.	29 Da Makkedà Giosuè e tutto Israele passarono a Libna e l’attaccarono.
30 Libnah also, with its king, the LORD delivered into the power of Israel. He put it to the sword with every person there, leaving no survivors. Thus he did to its king what he had done to the king of Jericho.	30 Il Signore consegnò anche questa città e il suo re nelle mani d’Israele, che la passò a fil di spada con ogni essere vivente che era in essa; non vi lasciò alcun superstite e trattò il suo re come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.
31 Joshua next passed on with all Israel from Libnah to Lachish, where they set up a camp during the attack.	31 Da Libna Giosuè e tutto Israele passarono a Lachis, si accamparono contro di essa e l’attaccarono.
32 The LORD delivered Lachish into the power of Israel, so that on the second day Joshua captured it and put it to the sword with every person in it, just as he had done to Libnah.	32 Il Signore consegnò Lachis nelle mani d’Israele: la conquistò il secondo giorno e la passò a fil di spada con ogni essere vivente che era in essa, come aveva fatto a Libna.
33 At that time Horam, king of Gezer, came up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his people, leaving him no survivors.	33 Allora Oram, re di Ghezer, andò in soccorso di Lachis. Giosuè batté lui e il suo popolo, fino a non lasciargli alcun superstite.
34 From Lachish, Joshua passed on with all Israel to Eglon; encamping near it, they attacked it	34 Da Lachis Giosuè e tutto Israele passarono a Eglon, si accamparono contro di essa e l’attaccarono.
35 and captured it the same day, putting it to the sword. He fulfilled the doom that day on every person in it, just as he had done at Lachish.	35 La presero quello stesso giorno e la passarono a fil di spada, votando allo sterminio ogni essere vivente che era in essa, come avevano fatto a Lachis.
36 From Eglon, Joshua went up with all Israel to Hebron, which they attacked	36 Da Eglon Giosuè e tutto Israele salirono a Ebron e l’attaccarono.
37 and captured. They put it to the sword with its king, all its towns, and every person there, leaving no survivors, just as Joshua had done to Eglon. He fulfilled the doom on it and on every person there.	37 Presero e passarono a fil di spada la città, il suo re, tutti i suoi villaggi e ogni essere vivente che era in essa. Non lasciarono alcun superstite, come avevano fatto a Eglon: la votarono allo sterminio, con ogni essere vivente che era in essa.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel turned back to Debir and attacked it,	38 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, si volsero a Debir e l’attaccarono.
39 capturing it with its king and all its towns. They put them to the sword and fulfilled the doom on every person there, leaving no survivors. Thus was done to Debir and its king what had been done to Hebron, as well as to Libnah and its king.	39 La presero con il suo re e tutti i suoi villaggi, li passarono a fil di spada e votarono allo sterminio ogni essere vivente che era in essa: non lasciarono alcun superstite. Trattarono Debir e il suo re come avevano trattato Ebron e come avevano trattato Libna e il suo re.
40 Joshua conquered the entire country; the mountain regions, the Negeb, the foothills, and the mountain slopes, with all their kings. He left no survivors, but fulfilled the doom on all who lived there, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.	40 Così Giosuè conquistò tutta la regione: le montagne, il Negheb, la Sefela, le pendici, con tutti i loro re. Non lasciò alcun superstite e votò allo sterminio ogni vivente, come aveva comandato il Signore, Dio d’Israele.
41 Joshua conquered from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen to Gibeon.	41 Giosuè li conquistò da Kades-Barnea fino a Gaza, con tutto il territorio di Gosen fino a Gàbaon.
42 All these kings and their lands Joshua captured in a single campaign, for the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.	42 Giosuè prese tutti questi re e i loro territori in una sola volta, perché il Signore, Dio d’Israele, combatteva per Israele.
43 Thereupon Joshua with all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.	43 Infine Giosuè e tutto Israele ritornarono all’accampamento di Gàlgala.
