Joshua 10

1 Now Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that, in the capture and destruction of Ai, Joshua had done to that city and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king. He heard also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made their peace with Israel, remaining among them,	1 Quando Adoni-Zedek, re di Gerusalemme, venne a sapere che Giosuè aveva preso Ai e l'aveva votata allo sterminio, e che, come aveva trattato Gerico e il suo re, così aveva trattato Ai e il suo re, e che gli abitanti di Gabaon avevano fatto pace con i figli d'Israele e si trovavano in mezzo ad essi,
2 and that there was great fear abroad, because Gibeon was large enough for a royal city, larger even than the city of Ai, and all its men were brave.	2 ne fu terrorizzato, perché Gabaon era una città grande come una capitale ed era più grande di Ai e i suoi uomini erano tutti valorosi.
3 So Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, sent for Hoham, king of Hebron, Piram, king of Jarmuth, Japhia, king of Lachish, and Debir, king of Eglon,	3 Allora Adoni-Zedek, re di Gerusalemme, mandò a dire a Oam, re di Ebron, a Piream, re di Iarmut, a Iafia, re di Lachis, e a Debir, re di Eglon:
4 to come to his aid for an attack on Gibeon, since it had concluded peace with Joshua and the Israelites.	4 "Salite fin quassù da me e aiutatemi ad espugnare Gabaon, perché ha fatto pace con Giosuè e con i figli d'Israele".
5 The five Amorite kings, of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon, united all their forces and marched against Gibeon, where they took up siege positions.	5 Riunitisi quindi i cinque re amorrei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon, salirono con tutte le loro forze, si accamparono davanti a Gabaon e l'assalirono.
6 Thereupon, the men of Gibeon sent an appeal to Joshua in his camp at Gilgal: "Do not abandon your servants. Come up here quickly and save us. Help us, because all the Amorite kings of the mountain country have joined forces against us."	6 I Gabaoniti allora mandarono a dire a Giosuè, all'accampamento a Gàlgala: "Non ritrarre il tuo aiuto ai tuoi servi, sali presto fino a noi e salvaci con il tuo aiuto, perché si sono coalizzati contro di noi tutti i re amorrei che abitano sulle montagne".
7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his picked troops and the rest of his soldiers.	7 Giosuè salì allora da Gàlgala, lui insieme a tutti i suoi uomini atti alla guerra, tutti i guerrieri valorosi.
8 Meanwhile the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your power. Not one of them will be able to withstand you."	8 Il Signore disse a Giosuè: "Non aver paura di loro, perché io te li do nelle mani; nessuno di quelli potrà resisterti".
9 And when Joshua made his surprise attack upon them after an all-night march from Gilgal,	9 Giosuè piombò loro addosso all'improvviso: tutta la notte aveva continuato a salire da Gàlgala.
10 the LORD threw them into disorder before him. The Israelites inflicted a great slaughter on them at Gibeon and pursued them down the Beth-horon slope, harrassing them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.	10 Il Signore li mise in confusione davanti a Israele, infliggendo loro una grave sconfitta presso Gabaon; poi li inseguì verso la salita di Bet-Oron, continuando a percuoterli fino ad Azeka e a Makkeda.
11 While they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon, the LORD hurled great stones from the sky above them all the way to Azekah, killing many. More died from these hailstones than the Israelites slew with the sword.	11 Quando nella loro fuga davanti a Israele si trovavano nella discesa di Bet-Oron, il Signore scagliò su di loro dal cielo pietre così grosse fino ad Azeka, che quelli morivano, sì che furono più quelli che morirono per quella grandinata di pietre che non quelli che uccisero di spada i figli d'Israele.
12 On this day, when the LORD delivered up the Amorites to the Israelites,	12 In quel tempo, quando cioè il Signore dette gli Amorrei in balia dei figli d'Israele, Giosuè parlò al Signore, esprimendosi così alla presenza d'Israele: "O sole, fermati su Gabaon, e tu, o luna, nella valle di Aialon".
13 And the sun stood still,	13 E il sole si fermò, e la luna ristette, finché il popolo si fu vendicato dei suoi nemici. Non sta forse scritto nel Libro del Giusto: "Il sole rimase fermo in mezzo al cielo e non si affrettò a tramontare quasi tutto un giorno?
14 Never before or since was there a day like this, when the LORD obeyed the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.	14 Non vi fu mai, né prima né dopo, un giorno come quello, in cui il Signore abbia esaudito la preghiera di un uomo; evidentemente il Signore combatté per Israele!".
15 (Then Joshua and all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.)	15 Dopodiché Giosuè e con lui tutto Israele tornarono all'accampamento a Gàlgala.
16 Meanwhile the five kings who had fled, hid in a cave at Makkedah.	16 Quei cinque re fuggirono e andarono a nascondersi in una caverna presso Makkeda.
17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been discovered hiding in a cave at Makkedah,	17 Fu riferito infatti a Giosuè: "Sono stati trovati i cinque re nascosti nella grotta di Makkeda".
18 he said, "Roll large stones to the mouth of the cave and post men over it to guard them.	18 Egli disse: "Rotolate grosse pietre all'imbocco della caverna e mettetevi degli uomini per sorvegliarli.
19 But do not remain there yourselves. Pursue your enemies, and harry them in the rear. Do not allow them to escape to their cities, for the LORD, your God, has delivered them into your power."	19 Voi intanto non vi fermate, ma continuate ad inseguire i vostri nemici, prendendoli alle spalle, non permettendo loro così di rientrare nelle loro città, perché il Signore, vostro Dio, li ha messi nelle vostre mani".
20 Once Joshua and the Israelites had finally inflicted the last blows in this very great slaughter, and the survivors had escaped from them into the fortified cities,	20 Quando Giosuè e i figli d'Israele ebbero finito di massacrarli con una strage tale da sterminarli, ed i superstiti di essi fuggendo si salvarono entrando nelle città fortificate,
21 all the army returned safely to Joshua and the camp at Makkedah, no man uttering a sound against the Israelites.	21 tutto il popolo tornò sano e salvo all'accampamento presso Giosuè, in pace. Nessuno mosse più la lingua contro i figli d'Israele.
22 Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring out those five kings to me."	22 Allora Giosuè disse: "Aprite l'ingresso della caverna e, tratti fuori dalla caverna quei cinque re, conducetemeli".
23 Obediently, they brought out to him from the cave the five kings, of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon.	23 Così fecero, e condussero a lui i cinque re fuori della caverna, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Ebron, il re di Iarmut, il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon.
24 When they had done so, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the soldiers who had marched with him, "Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings." They came forward and put their feet upon their necks.	24 Quando quei re furono condotti a Giosuè, questi radunò tutto Israele e disse ai capi dell'esercito che li avevano accompagnati: "Avvicinatevi e mettete i vostri piedi sul collo di questi re". Ed essi si avvicinarono e posero i loro piedi sul collo di quelli.
25 Then Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed, be firm and steadfast. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies against whom you fight."	25 Disse quindi loro Giosuè: "Non temete e non perdetevi di coraggio, ma siate forti e valorosi, perché così il Signore tratterà tutti i vostri nemici, contro i quali dovrete combattere".
26 Thereupon Joshua struck and killed them, and hanged them on five trees, where they remained hanging until evening.	26 Dopo ciò Giosuè li fece colpire ed uccidere e li fece appendere a cinque pali sui quali rimasero appesi fino alla sera.
27 At sunset they were removed from the trees at the command of Joshua and cast into the cave where they had hidden; over the mouth of the cave large stones were placed, which remain until this very day.	27 Al tramontar del sole, Giosuè comandò di calarli giù dai pali e li fece gettare nella grotta in cui essi si erano nascosti, all'imboccatura della quale posero delle grosse pietre, che vi si trovano anche oggi.
28 Makkedah, too, Joshua captured and put to the sword at that time. He fulfilled the doom on the city, on its king, and on every person in it, leaving no survivors. Thus he did to the king of Makkedah what he had done to the king of Jericho.	28 In quel giorno Giosuè prese Makkeda e la passò a fil di spada con il suo re, votò all'interdetto quella e tutti i suoi abitanti, senza lasciare che alcuno scampasse e trattò il re di Makkeda come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.
29 Joshua then passed on with all Israel from Makkedah to Libnah, which he attacked.	29 Poi Giosuè e quanti erano con lui passarono da Makkeda a Libna e assalirono Libna.
30 Libnah also, with its king, the LORD delivered into the power of Israel. He put it to the sword with every person there, leaving no survivors. Thus he did to its king what he had done to the king of Jericho.	30 Il Signore mise nelle mani d'Israele anche questa città e il suo re, facendola passare a fil di spada con tutti quelli che vi abitavano, non lasciandovi alcun superstite e trattò il suo re come aveva trattato il re di Gerico.
31 Joshua next passed on with all Israel from Libnah to Lachish, where they set up a camp during the attack.	31 Quindi Giosuè con tutto Israele da Libna passò a Lachis, che assediò e prese d'assalto.
32 The LORD delivered Lachish into the power of Israel, so that on the second day Joshua captured it and put it to the sword with every person in it, just as he had done to Libnah.	32 Il Signore lasciò Lachis in potere d'Israele, che la prese il secondo giorno e la passò a fil di spada con tutti i suoi abitanti, tutto come aveva fatto a Libna.
33 At that time Horam, king of Gezer, came up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his people, leaving him no survivors.	33 In quel tempo Oram, re di Ghezer, salì in aiuto di Lachis, ma Giosuè lo batté insieme al suo esercito, sì da non lasciare alcun superstite.
34 From Lachish, Joshua passed on with all Israel to Eglon; encamping near it, they attacked it	34 Quindi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, passò da Lachis a Eglon, che assediarono e assalirono.
35 and captured it the same day, putting it to the sword. He fulfilled the doom that day on every person in it, just as he had done at Lachish.	35 La occuparono quello stesso giorno e la passarono a fil di spada, votando quello stesso giorno allo sterminio tutti quelli che vi erano; tutto come era stato fatto con Lachis.
36 From Eglon, Joshua went up with all Israel to Hebron, which they attacked	36 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, salì da Eglon a Ebron e l'attaccò.
37 and captured. They put it to the sword with its king, all its towns, and every person there, leaving no survivors, just as Joshua had done to Eglon. He fulfilled the doom on it and on every person there.	37 Presala, la passarono a fil di spada con il suo re e le sue città e tutti gli abitanti, non lasciando un superstite, tutto come aveva fatto con Eglon e votò allo sterminio essa e tutti quelli che vi abitavano.
38 Then Joshua and all Israel turned back to Debir and attacked it,	38 Poi Giosuè, e con lui tutto Israele, si volse verso Debir e l'attaccò.
39 capturing it with its king and all its towns. They put them to the sword and fulfilled the doom on every person there, leaving no survivors. Thus was done to Debir and its king what had been done to Hebron, as well as to Libnah and its king.	39 Prese la città, il suo re e tutte le sue località e passò a fil di spada e votò allo sterminio tutti i suoi abitanti, non lasciando alcun superstite; come aveva agito con Ebron, così agì con Debir e il suo re, come aveva trattato anche Libna e il suo re.
40 Joshua conquered the entire country; the mountain regions, the Negeb, the foothills, and the mountain slopes, with all their kings. He left no survivors, but fulfilled the doom on all who lived there, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.	40 Così Giosuè conquistò tutta la regione: la montagna, il Negheb, il bassopiano, le pendici e tutti i loro re. Non lasciò alcun superstite e votò allo sterminio ogni vivente, come aveva ordinato il Signore, Dio d'Israele.
41 Joshua conquered from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen to Gibeon.	41 Giosuè li sterminò da Kades-Barnea fino a Gaza, e tutta la regione di Gosen fino a Gabaon.
42 All these kings and their lands Joshua captured in a single campaign, for the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.	42 In una sola campagna Giosuè prese tutti quei re e il loro territorio, perché il Signore, Dio d'Israele, combatté per Israele.
43 Thereupon Joshua with all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.	43 Alla fine Giosuè ritornò all'accampamento in Gàlgala.
