NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Now Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that, in the capture and destruction of Ai, Joshua had done to that city and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king. He heard also that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made their peace with Israel, remaining among them,1 Quae cum audisset Adonise dec rex Ierusalem, quod scili cet cepisset Iosue Hai et subvertisset eam — sicut enim fecerat Iericho et regi eius, sic fecit Hai et regi illius — et quod pacem fecissent Gabaonitae cum Israel et essent in medio eorum,
and that there was great fear abroad, because Gibeon was large enough for a royal city, larger even than the city of Ai, and all its men were brave.2 timuerunt valde. Urbs enim magna erat Gabaon, sicut una regalium civitatum, et maior oppido Hai, omnesque viri eius bellatores fortissimi.
So Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, sent for Hoham, king of Hebron, Piram, king of Jarmuth, Japhia, king of Lachish, and Debir, king of Eglon,3 Misit ergo Adonisedec rex Ierusalem ad Oham regem Hebron et ad Pharam regem Ierimoth, ad Iaphia quoque regem Lachis et ad Dabir regem Eglon dicens:
to come to his aid for an attack on Gibeon, since it had concluded peace with Joshua and the Israelites.4 “ Ascendite ad me et ferte praesidium, ut expugnemus Gabaon, quia fecit pacem cum Iosue et filiis Israel ”.
The five Amorite kings, of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon, united all their forces and marched against Gibeon, where they took up siege positions.5 Congregati igitur ascenderunt quinque reges Amorraeorum: rex Ierusalem, rex Hebron, rex Ierimoth, rex Lachis, rex Eglon simul cum exercitibus suis; et castrametati sunt circa Gabaon oppugnantes eam.
Thereupon, the men of Gibeon sent an appeal to Joshua in his camp at Gilgal: "Do not abandon your servants. Come up here quickly and save us. Help us, because all the Amorite kings of the mountain country have joined forces against us."6 Habitatores autem Gabaon miserunt ad Iosue, qui tunc morabatur in castris apud Galgalam, et dixerunt ei: “ Ne retrahas manus tuas ab auxilio servorum tuorum! Ascende cito et libera nos ferque praesidium: convenerunt enim adversum nos omnes reges Amorraeorum, qui habitant in montanis ”.
So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his picked troops and the rest of his soldiers.7 Ascenditque Iosue de Galgalis, et omnis exercitus bellatorum cum eo, viri fortissimi.
Meanwhile the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your power. Not one of them will be able to withstand you."8 Dixitque Dominus ad Iosue: “Ne timeas eos! In manus enim tuas tradidi illos; nullus tibi ex eis resistere poterit ”.
And when Joshua made his surprise attack upon them after an all-night march from Gilgal,9 Irruit itaque Iosue super eos repente tota ascendens nocte de Galgalis,
the LORD threw them into disorder before him. The Israelites inflicted a great slaughter on them at Gibeon and pursued them down the Beth-horon slope, harrassing them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.10 et conturbavit eos Dominus a facie Israel; contrivitque plaga magna in Gabaon ac persecutus est per viam ascensus Bethoron et percussit usque Azeca et Maceda.
While they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon, the LORD hurled great stones from the sky above them all the way to Azekah, killing many. More died from these hailstones than the Israelites slew with the sword.11 Cumque fugerent filios Israel et essent in descensu Bethoron, Dominus misit super eos lapides magnos de caelo usque Azeca, et mortui sunt multo plures lapidibus grandinis, quam quos gladio percusserant filii Israel.
On this day, when the LORD delivered up the Amorites to the Israelites,12 Tunc locutus est Iosue Domino in die, qua tradidit Amorraeum in conspectu filiorum Israel, dixitque coram Israel:
“ Sol, in Gabaon ne movearis,
et luna, in valle Aialon ”.
And the sun stood still,13 Steteruntque sol et luna,
donec ulcisceretur se gens de inimicis suis.
Nonne scriptum est hoc in libro Iusti? Stetit itaque sol in medio caeli et non festinavit occumbere spatio unius fere diei.
Never before or since was there a day like this, when the LORD obeyed the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.14 Non fuit antea et postea sicut dies illa, oboediente Domino voci hominis, quia Dominus pugnavit pro Israel.
(Then Joshua and all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.)15 Reversusque est Iosue cum omni Israel in castra Galgalae.
Meanwhile the five kings who had fled, hid in a cave at Makkedah.16 Fugerant autem quinque reges et se absconderant in spelunca urbis Maceda.
When Joshua was told that the five kings had been discovered hiding in a cave at Makkedah,17 Nuntiatumque est Iosue quod inventi essent quinque reges latentes in spelunca urbis Maceda.
he said, "Roll large stones to the mouth of the cave and post men over it to guard them.18 Qui praecepit: “ Volvite saxa ingentia ad os speluncae et ponite viros, qui clausos custodiant.
But do not remain there yourselves. Pursue your enemies, and harry them in the rear. Do not allow them to escape to their cities, for the LORD, your God, has delivered them into your power."19 Vos autem nolite stare, sed persequimini hostes et extremos quoque fugientium caedite; ne dimittatis eos urbium suarum intrare praesidia, quia tradidit eos Dominus Deus vester in manus vestras ”.
Once Joshua and the Israelites had finally inflicted the last blows in this very great slaughter, and the survivors had escaped from them into the fortified cities,20 Caesis igitur adversariis plaga maxima usque ad internecionem, ut reliquiae tantum ex eis effugere possent in civitates munitas,
all the army returned safely to Joshua and the camp at Makkedah, no man uttering a sound against the Israelites.21 reversus est omnis exercitus ad Iosue in Maceda ad castra, sani et integri; nullusque contra filios Israel mutire ausus est.
Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring out those five kings to me."22 Praecepitque Iosue dicens: “ Aperite os speluncae et producite ad me quinque reges, qui in ea latitant ”.
Obediently, they brought out to him from the cave the five kings, of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon.23 Feceruntque sic et eduxerunt ad eum quinque reges de spelunca: regem Ierusalem, regem Hebron, regem Ierimoth, regem Lachis, regem Eglon.
When they had done so, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the soldiers who had marched with him, "Come forward and put your feet on the necks of these kings." They came forward and put their feet upon their necks.24 Cumque educti essent ad eum, vocavit omnes viros Israel et ait ad principes exercitus, qui secum erant: “Accedite et ponite pedes super colla regum istorum”. Qui cum accessissent et subiectorum colla pedibus calcarent,
Then Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed, be firm and steadfast. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies against whom you fight."25 rursum ait ad eos: “ Nolite timere nec paveatis; confortamini et estote robusti! Sic enim faciet Dominus cunctis hostibus vestris, adversum quos dimicatis ”.
Thereupon Joshua struck and killed them, and hanged them on five trees, where they remained hanging until evening.26 Percussitque Iosue et interfecit eos atque suspendit super quinque ligna; fueruntque suspensi usque ad vesperum.
At sunset they were removed from the trees at the command of Joshua and cast into the cave where they had hidden; over the mouth of the cave large stones were placed, which remain until this very day.27 Cumque occumberet sol, praecepit Iosue, ut deponerent eos de lignis; et depositos proiecerunt in speluncam, in qua latuerant, et posuerunt super os eius saxa ingentia, quae permanent usque in praesens.
Makkedah, too, Joshua captured and put to the sword at that time. He fulfilled the doom on the city, on its king, and on every person in it, leaving no survivors. Thus he did to the king of Makkedah what he had done to the king of Jericho.28 Eodem quoque die Macedam cepit Iosue et percussit eam in ore gladii regemque illius interfecit et omnes habitatores eius; non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias fecitque regi Maceda, sicut fecerat regi Iericho.
Joshua then passed on with all Israel from Makkedah to Libnah, which he attacked.29 Transivit cum omni Israel de Maceda in Lobna et pugnabat contra eam.
Libnah also, with its king, the LORD delivered into the power of Israel. He put it to the sword with every person there, leaving no survivors. Thus he did to its king what he had done to the king of Jericho.30 Quam tradidit Dominus cum rege suo in manu Israel, percusseruntque urbem in ore gladii et omnes habitatores eius; non dimiserunt in ea ullas reliquias feceruntque regi Lobna, sicut fecerant regi Iericho.
Joshua next passed on with all Israel from Libnah to Lachish, where they set up a camp during the attack.31 De Lobna transivit Iosue in Lachis cum omni Israel et, exercitu per gyrum disposito, oppugnabat eam.
The LORD delivered Lachish into the power of Israel, so that on the second day Joshua captured it and put it to the sword with every person in it, just as he had done to Libnah.32 Tradiditque Dominus Lachis in manu Israel, qui cepit eam die altero; atque percussit in ore gladii omnemque animam, quae fuerat in ea, sicut fecerat Lobna.
At that time Horam, king of Gezer, came up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his people, leaving him no survivors.33 Eo tempore ascendit Horam rex Gazer, ut auxiliaretur Lachis; quem percussit Iosue cum omni populo eius usque ad internecionem.
From Lachish, Joshua passed on with all Israel to Eglon; encamping near it, they attacked it34 Transivitque de Lachis in Eglon cum omni Israel et circumdedit
and captured it the same day, putting it to the sword. He fulfilled the doom that day on every person in it, just as he had done at Lachish.35 atque expugnavit eam eadem die percussitque in ore gladii omnes animas, quae erant in ea, iuxta omnia, quae fecerat Lachis.
From Eglon, Joshua went up with all Israel to Hebron, which they attacked36 Ascendit quoque cum omni Israel de Eglon in Hebron et pugnavit contra eam.
and captured. They put it to the sword with its king, all its towns, and every person there, leaving no survivors, just as Joshua had done to Eglon. He fulfilled the doom on it and on every person there.37 Cepitque eam et percussit in ore gladii, regem quoque eius et omnia oppida eius universasque animas, quae ibi fuerant commoratae; non reliquit ullas reliquias: sicut fecerat Eglon, sic fecit et Hebron, cuncta, quae in ea repperit, consumens gladio.
Then Joshua and all Israel turned back to Debir and attacked it,38 Inde reversus cum omni Israel in Dabir oppugnavit
capturing it with its king and all its towns. They put them to the sword and fulfilled the doom on every person there, leaving no survivors. Thus was done to Debir and its king what had been done to Hebron, as well as to Libnah and its king.39 et cepit eam; regem quoque eius et omnia oppida eius percussit in ore gladii; non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias: sicut fecerat Hebron et Lobna et regibus earum, sic fecit Dabir et regi illius.
Joshua conquered the entire country; the mountain regions, the Negeb, the foothills, and the mountain slopes, with all their kings. He left no survivors, but fulfilled the doom on all who lived there, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.40 Percussit itaque Iosue omnem terram: montanam et Nageb atque Sephelam et declivia cum regibus suis; non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias, sed omne, quod spirare poterat, interfecit, sicut praeceperat Dominus, Deus Israel.
Joshua conquered from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen to Gibeon.41 Et percussit eos a Cadesbarne usque Gazam, omnem terram Gosen usque Gabaon,
All these kings and their lands Joshua captured in a single campaign, for the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.42 universosque reges et regiones eorum uno cepit impetu; Dominus enim, Deus Israel, pugnabat pro Israel.
Thereupon Joshua with all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.43 Reversusque est Iosue cum omni Israel ad locum castrorum in Galgala.
