1 When it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they handed Paul and some other prisoners over to a centurion named Julius of the Cohort Augusta.	1 Dopo che fu stabilito, che Paolo andasse per mare in Italia, e che fosse consegnato con gli altri prigionieri ad un centurione della coorte Augusta, chiamato Giulio,
2 We went on board a ship from Adramyttium bound for ports in the province of Asia and set sail. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us.	2 Entrati in una nave di Adrumeto, facemmo vela, costeggiando i paesi dell'Asia, accompagnandoci Aristarco Macedone di Tessalonica.
3 On the following day we put in at Sidon where Julius was kind enough to allow Paul to visit his friends who took care of him.	3 E il di seguente arrivammo a Sidone. E Giulio trattando Paolo umanamente gli permise di andar dagli amici, e di ristorarsi.
4 From there we put out to sea and sailed around the sheltered side of Cyprus because of the headwinds,	4 Di li fatta vela navigammo sotto Cipro, a motivo, che erano contrari i venti.
5 and crossing the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia we came to Myra in Lycia.	5 E traversando il mare della Cilicia, e della Panfilia, arrivammo a Listra della Licia:
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship that was sailing to Italy and put us on board.	6 E quivi avendo il centurione trovata una nave Allessandrina, che andava in Italia, ci trasportò sopra di essa.
7 For many days we made little headway, arriving at Cnidus only with difficulty, and because the wind would not permit us to continue our course we sailed for the sheltered side of Crete off Salmone.	7 E per molti giorni navigando lentamente, ed essendo con difficoltà arrivati dirimpetto a Gnido, perché il vento ci impediva, costeggiammo la Candia lungo Salmone:
8 We sailed past it with difficulty and reached a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea.	8 E stentatamente costeggiandola, arrivammo a un certo luogo, chiamato Buoniporti, vicino al quale era la città di Talassa.
9 Much time had now passed and sailing had become hazardous because the time of the fast had already gone by, so Paul warned them,	9 E avendo consumato molto tempo, e non essendo più sicuro il navigare, perché era passato il digiuno, Paolo gli ammoniva,
10 "Men, I can see that this voyage will result in severe damage and heavy loss not only to the cargo and the ship, but also to our lives."	10 Dicendo loro: Io veggo, o uomini, che la navigazione comincia ad essere con nocumento, e perdita grande non solo del carico, e della nave, ma ancora delle nostre vite.
11 The centurion, however, paid more attention to the pilot and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said.	11 Ma il centurione credeva più ai piloti, e al padron della nave, che a quanto diceva Paolo.
12 Since the harbor was unfavorably situated for spending the winter, the majority planned to put out to sea from there in the hope of reaching Phoenix, a port in Crete facing west-northwest, there to spend the winter.	12 E non essendo buono quel porto per isvernarvi, la maggior parte furono di sentimento di partirne, e se in alcun modo avessero potuto giugnere a Fenice (porto della Candia volto ad Affrico, e a Coro) ivi svernare.
13 A south wind blew gently, and thinking they had attained their objective, they weighed anchor and sailed along close to the coast of Crete.	13 E spirando leggermente l'Austro, credendosi sicuri del loro intento, avendo salpato da Asson, costeggiavan la Candia.
14 Before long an offshore wind of hurricane force called a "Northeaster" struck.	14 Ma poco dopo si spinse contro di essa un vento procelloso, che si chiama Euro aquilone.
15 Since the ship was caught up in it and could not head into the wind we gave way and let ourselves be driven.	15 Ed essendo portata via la nave, né potendo far fronte al venuto, abbandonata al vento la nave, eravamo portati.
16 We passed along the sheltered side of an island named Cauda and managed only with difficulty to get the dinghy under control.	16 E correndo sotto una certa isoletta,chiamata Cauda, a mala pena potemmo renderci padroni dello schifo.
17 They hoisted it aboard, then used cables to undergird the ship. Because of their fear that they would run aground on the shoal of Syrtis, they lowered the drift anchor and were carried along in this way.	17 Ma tiratolo su, si valevano degli aiuti, fasciando con funi la nave, e temendo di dar nelle secche, calato l'albero cosi erano portati.
18 We were being pounded by the storm so violently that the next day they jettisoned some cargo,	18 Ma essendo noi battuti gagliardamente dalla tempesta, il dì seguente fecer getto delle merci:
19 and on the third day with their own hands they threw even the ship's tackle overboard.	19 E il terzo giorno colle loro mani gittarono via gli attrezzi della nave.
20 Neither the sun nor the stars were visible for many days, and no small storm raged. Finally, all hope of our surviving was taken away.	20 E non essendo comparso né sole, né stelle per più giorni, e premendoci la burrasca non piccola, era già tolta a noi ogni speranza di salute.
21 When many would no longer eat, Paul stood among them and said, "Men, you should have taken my advice and not have set sail from Crete and you would have avoided this disastrous loss.	21 Ed essendo già lungo il digiuno, allora stando in piedi Paolo in mezzo di essi, disse: Conveniva, o uomini, che fecendo a modo mio, non vi foste allontanati dalla Candia, e vi foste risparmiato questo strapazzo, e questo danno.
22 I urge you now to keep up your courage; not one of you will be lost, only the ship.	22 Ma ora vi esorto a star di buon animo: Imperocché non si perderà anima di voi altri, ma solo la nave.
23 For last night an angel of the God to whom (I) belong and whom I serve stood by me	23 Imperocché mi è apparso questa notte l'Angelo di quel Dio, di cui io sono, e a cui servo,
24 and said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to stand before Caesar; and behold, for your sake, God has granted safety to all who are sailing with you.'	24 Dicendomi: non temere, o Paolo, fa d'uopo, che tu sii presentato a Cesare: Ed ecco, che Dio ti ha fatto dono di tutti quelli, che teco navigano.
25 Therefore, keep up your courage, men; I trust in God that it will turn out as I have been told.	25 Per la qual cosa state di buon animo, o uomini: Imperocché ho fede in Dio, che sarà, come è stato a me detto.
26 We are destined to run aground on some island."	26 Noi dobbiamo dare in una certa isola.
27 On the fourteenth night, as we were still being driven about on the Adriatic Sea, toward midnight the sailors began to suspect that they were nearing land.	27 Ma venuta la quartadecima notte, navigando noi pel mare Adriatico, circa la metà della notte i marinari sospicavano, che si avvicinasse loro qualche paese.
28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms; a little farther on, they again took soundings and found fifteen fathoms.	28 E gettato lo scandaglio, trovarono venti passi: e tirando un pochetto innanzi, trovarono quindici passi.
29 Fearing that we would run aground on a rocky coast, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come.	29 E temendo di non dare in luoghi aspri, calate da poppa quattro ancore, bramavano, che venisse il giorno.
30 The sailors then tried to abandon ship; they lowered the dinghy to the sea on the pretext of going to lay out anchors from the bow.	30 E cercando i marinari di fuggir della nave, e avendo messo in mare lo schifo col pretesto di cominciare a stendere le ancore dalla prora,
31 But Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved."	31 Disse Paolo al centurione, e a' soldati: se costoro non restano nella nave, voi non potete essere salvi.
32 So the soldiers cut the ropes of the dinghy and set it adrift.	32 Allora i soldati troncaron le funi dello schifo, e lasciaron che se n' andasse.
33 Until the day began to dawn, Paul kept urging all to take some food. He said, "Today is the fourteenth day that you have been waiting, going hungry and eating nothing.	33 E principiando a farsi giorno, Paolo esortava tutti a prender cibo, dicendo: oggi è il quartodecimo giorno, che appellando ve ne state digiuni senza prendere cosa alcuna.
34 I urge you, therefore, to take some food; it will help you survive. Not a hair of the head of anyone of you will be lost."	34 Il perché vi esorto a prender cibo, affine di salvare voi stessi: imperocché non perirà un capello della testa di alcun di voi.
35 When he said this, he took bread, gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it, and began to eat.	35 E detto questo, prese del pane; ringraziò Dio alla presenza di tutti: e sprezzatolo cominciò a mangiare.
36 They were all encouraged, and took some food themselves.	36 E tutti ripreso coraggio, anch'essi pigliarono nudrimento.
37 In all, there were two hundred seventy-six of us on the ship.	37 Eravamo nella nave in tutto duegensettantasei anime.
38 After they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea.	38 E saziati di cibo alleggiavano la nave, gettando in mare il grano.
39 When day came they did not recognize the land, but made out a bay with a beach. They planned to run the ship ashore on it, if they could.	39 E fattosi giorno, non riconoscevano quella terra: ma osservarono un certo seno, che aveva lido, al quale avevano pensato di spinger la nave, se avesser potuto.
40 So they cast off the anchors and abandoned them to the sea, and at the same time they unfastened the lines of the rudders, and hoisting the foresail into the wind, they made for the beach.	40 E tirate su le ancore, si abbandonavano il mare avendo insiememente allargati i legami de' timoni: e alzato l'artimone secondo il soffiare del vento andavano verso il lido.
41 But they struck a sandbar and ran the ship aground. The bow was wedged in and could not be moved, but the stern began to break up under the pounding (of the waves).	41 Ma essendoci imbattuti in una punta di terra, che aveva da' due lati il mare, arrenarono: e la prora affondatasi rimanea immobile; la poppa poi per la violenza del mare veniva a sfasciarsi.
42 The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners so that none might swim away and escape,	42 Il disegno de' soldati si fu di ammazzare i prigioni: affinchè qualcheduno salvatosi a nuoto non iscapasse.
43 but the centurion wanted to save Paul and so kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to the shore,	43 Ma il centurione bramoso di salvar Paolo, impedì loro di ciò fare: e ordinò, che quelli, che potean nuotare si gettassero giù i primi, e andassero a terra.
44 and then the rest, some on planks, others on debris from the ship. In this way, all reached shore safely.	44 Gli altri poi li portarono parte sopra tavole, parte sopra gli sfasciumi della nave. E cosi ne avvenne, che tutti scamparono a terra.
