1 When it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they handed Paul and some other prisoners over to a centurion named Julius of the Cohort Augusta.	1 Quand notre embarquement pour l'Italie eut été décidé, on remit Paul et quelques autres prisonniers àun centurion de la cohorte Augusta, nommé Julius.
2 We went on board a ship from Adramyttium bound for ports in the province of Asia and set sail. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us.	2 Nous montâmes à bord d'un vaisseau d'Adramyttium qui allait partir pour les côtes d'Asie, et nousprîmes la mer. Il y avait avec nous Aristarque, un Macédonien de Thessalonique.
3 On the following day we put in at Sidon where Julius was kind enough to allow Paul to visit his friends who took care of him.	3 Le lendemain, nous touchâmes à Sidon. Julius fit preuve d'humanité à l'égard de Paul en luipermettant d'aller trouver ses amis et de recevoir leurs bons offices.
4 From there we put out to sea and sailed around the sheltered side of Cyprus because of the headwinds,	4 Partis de là, nous longeâmes la côte de Chypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires.
5 and crossing the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia we came to Myra in Lycia.	5 Traversant ensuite les mers de Cilicie et de Pamphylie, nous arrivâmes au bout de quinze jours àMyre en Lycie.
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship that was sailing to Italy and put us on board.	6 Là, le centurion trouva un navire alexandrin en partance pour l'Italie et nous fit monter à bord.
7 For many days we made little headway, arriving at Cnidus only with difficulty, and because the wind would not permit us to continue our course we sailed for the sheltered side of Crete off Salmone.	7 Pendant plusieurs jours la navigation fut lente, et nous arrivâmes à grand-peine à la hauteur deCnide. Le vent ne nous permit pas d'aborder, nous longeâmes alors la Crète vers le cap Salmoné,
8 We sailed past it with difficulty and reached a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea.	8 et après l'avoir côtoyée péniblement, nous arrivâmes à un endroit appelé Bons-Ports, près duquel setrouve la ville de Lasaïa.
9 Much time had now passed and sailing had become hazardous because the time of the fast had already gone by, so Paul warned them,	9 Il s'était écoulé pas mal de temps, et la navigation était désormais périlleuse, car même le Jeûne étaitdéjà passé. Paul les en avertissait:
10 "Men, I can see that this voyage will result in severe damage and heavy loss not only to the cargo and the ship, but also to our lives."	10 "Mes amis, leur disait-il, je vois que la navigation n'ira pas sans péril et sans grave dommage nonseulement pour la cargaison et le navire, mais même pour nos personnes."
11 The centurion, however, paid more attention to the pilot and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said.	11 Le centurion se fiait au capitaine et à l'armateur plutôt qu'aux dires de Paul;
12 Since the harbor was unfavorably situated for spending the winter, the majority planned to put out to sea from there in the hope of reaching Phoenix, a port in Crete facing west-northwest, there to spend the winter.	12 le port se prêtait d'ailleurs mal à l'hivernage. La plupart furent donc d'avis de partir et de gagner, sipossible, pour y passer l'hiver, Phénix, un port de Crète tourné vers le sud-ouest et le nord-ouest.
13 A south wind blew gently, and thinking they had attained their objective, they weighed anchor and sailed along close to the coast of Crete.	13 Un léger vent du sud s'étant levé, ils se crurent en mesure d'exécuter leur projet. Ils levèrent l'ancreet se mirent à côtoyer de près la Crète.
14 Before long an offshore wind of hurricane force called a "Northeaster" struck.	14 Mais bientôt, venant de l'île, se déchaîna un vent d'ouragan nommé Euraquilon.
15 Since the ship was caught up in it and could not head into the wind we gave way and let ourselves be driven.	15 Le navire fut entraîné et ne put tenir tête au vent; nous nous abandonnâmes donc à la dérive.
16 We passed along the sheltered side of an island named Cauda and managed only with difficulty to get the dinghy under control.	16 Filant sous une petite île appelée Cauda, nous réussîmes à grand-peine à nous rendre maîtres de lachaloupe.
17 They hoisted it aboard, then used cables to undergird the ship. Because of their fear that they would run aground on the shoal of Syrtis, they lowered the drift anchor and were carried along in this way.	17 Après l'avoir hissée, on fit usage des engins de secours: on ceintura le navire; puis, par crainted'aller échouer sur la Syrte, on laissa glisser l'ancre flottante. On allait ainsi à la dérive.
18 We were being pounded by the storm so violently that the next day they jettisoned some cargo,	18 Le lendemain, comme nous étions furieusement battus de la tempête, on se mit à délester le navire
19 and on the third day with their own hands they threw even the ship's tackle overboard.	19 et, le troisième jour, de leurs propres mains, les matelots jetèrent les agrès à la mer.
20 Neither the sun nor the stars were visible for many days, and no small storm raged. Finally, all hope of our surviving was taken away.	20 Ni soleil ni étoiles n'avaient brillé depuis plusieurs jours, et la tempête gardait toujours la mêmeviolence; aussi tout espoir de salut était-il désormais perdu pour nous.
21 When many would no longer eat, Paul stood among them and said, "Men, you should have taken my advice and not have set sail from Crete and you would have avoided this disastrous loss.	21 Il y avait longtemps qu'on n'avait plus mangé: alors Paul, debout au milieu des autres, leur dit: "Ilfallait m'écouter, mes amis, et ne pas quitter la Crète; on se serait épargné ce péril et ce dommage.
22 I urge you now to keep up your courage; not one of you will be lost, only the ship.	22 Quoi qu'il en soit, je vous invite à avoir bon courage, car aucun de vous n'y laissera la vie, le navireseul sera perdu.
23 For last night an angel of the God to whom (I) belong and whom I serve stood by me	23 Cette nuit en effet m'est apparu un ange du Dieu auquel j'appartiens et que je sers,
24 and said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to stand before Caesar; and behold, for your sake, God has granted safety to all who are sailing with you.'	24 et il m'a dit: Sois sans crainte, Paul. Il faut que tu comparaisses devant César, et voici que Dieut'accorde la vie de tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.
25 Therefore, keep up your courage, men; I trust in God that it will turn out as I have been told.	25 Courage donc, mes amis! Je me fie à Dieu de ce qu'il en sera comme il m'a été dit.
26 We are destined to run aground on some island."	26 Mais nous devons échouer sur une île."
27 On the fourteenth night, as we were still being driven about on the Adriatic Sea, toward midnight the sailors began to suspect that they were nearing land.	27 C'était la quatorzième nuit et nous étions ballottés sur l'Adriatique, quand, vers minuit, les matelotspressentirent l'approche d'une terre.
28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms; a little farther on, they again took soundings and found fifteen fathoms.	28 Ils lancèrent la sonde et trouvèrent vingt brasses; un peu plus loin, ils la lancèrent encore ettrouvèrent quinze brasses.
29 Fearing that we would run aground on a rocky coast, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come.	29 Craignant donc que nous n'allions échouer quelque part sur des écueils, ils jetèrent quatre ancres àla poupe; et ils appelaient de leurs voeux la venue du jour.
30 The sailors then tried to abandon ship; they lowered the dinghy to the sea on the pretext of going to lay out anchors from the bow.	30 Mais les matelots cherchaient à s'enfuir du navire. Ils mirent la chaloupe à la mer, sous prétexted'aller élonger les ancres de la proue.
31 But Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved."	31 Paul dit alors au centurion et aux soldats: "Si ces gens-là ne restent pas sur le navire, vous nepouvez être sauvés."
32 So the soldiers cut the ropes of the dinghy and set it adrift.	32 Sur ce les soldats coupèrent les cordes de la chaloupe et la laissèrent tomber.
33 Until the day began to dawn, Paul kept urging all to take some food. He said, "Today is the fourteenth day that you have been waiting, going hungry and eating nothing.	33 En attendant que parût le jour, Paul engageait tout le monde à prendre de la nourriture. "Voiciaujourd'hui quatorze jours, disait-il, que, dans l'attente, vous restez à jeun, sans rien prendre.
34 I urge you, therefore, to take some food; it will help you survive. Not a hair of the head of anyone of you will be lost."	34 Je vous engage donc à prendre de la nourriture, car c'est votre propre salut qui est ici en jeu. Nuld'entre vous ne perdra un cheveu de sa tête."
35 When he said this, he took bread, gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it, and began to eat.	35 Cela dit, il prit du pain, rendit grâces à Dieu devant tous, le rompit et se mit à manger.
36 They were all encouraged, and took some food themselves.	36 Alors, retrouvant leur courage, eux aussi prirent tous de la nourriture.
37 In all, there were two hundred seventy-six of us on the ship.	37 Nous étions en tout sur le navire 276 personnes.
38 After they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea.	38 Une fois rassasiés, on se mit à alléger le navire en jetant le blé à la mer.
39 When day came they did not recognize the land, but made out a bay with a beach. They planned to run the ship ashore on it, if they could.	39 Quand le jour parut, les marins ne reconnurent pas la terre; ils distinguaient seulement une baieavec une plage, et ils se proposaient, si possible, d'y pousser le navire.
40 So they cast off the anchors and abandoned them to the sea, and at the same time they unfastened the lines of the rudders, and hoisting the foresail into the wind, they made for the beach.	40 Ils détachèrent les ancres, qu'ils abandonnèrent à la mer; ils relâchèrent en même temps les amarresdes gouvernails. Puis, hissant au vent la voile d'artimon, ils se laissèrent porter vers la plage.
41 But they struck a sandbar and ran the ship aground. The bow was wedged in and could not be moved, but the stern began to break up under the pounding (of the waves).	41 Mais ayant touché un haut-fond entre deux courants, ils y firent échouer le navire. La proue,fortement engagée, restait immobile, tandis que la poupe, violemment secouée, se disloquait.
42 The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners so that none might swim away and escape,	42 Les soldats résolurent alors de tuer les prisonniers, de peur qu'il ne s'en échappât quelqu'un à lanage.
43 but the centurion wanted to save Paul and so kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to the shore,	43 Mais le centurion, qui voulait sauver Paul, s'opposa à leur dessein. Il donna l'ordre à ceux quisavaient nager de se jeter à l'eau les premiers et de gagner la terre;
44 and then the rest, some on planks, others on debris from the ship. In this way, all reached shore safely.	44 quant aux autres, ils la gagneraient, qui sur des planches, qui sur les épaves du navire. Et c'est ainsique tous parvinrent sains et saufs à terre.
