1 When it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they handed Paul and some other prisoners over to a centurion named Julius of the Cohort Augusta.	1 Quand il a été décidé de nous faire prendre le bateau pour l’Italie, on a remis Paul, avec un certain nombre d’autres prisonniers, à un centurion du bataillon impérial qui s’appelait Julius.
2 We went on board a ship from Adramyttium bound for ports in the province of Asia and set sail. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us.	2 Nous sommes montés sur un bateau d’Adramyttium qui mettait à la voile pour les côtes d’Asie, et nous avons levé l’ancre. Il y avait avec nous Aristarque, un Macédonien qui est de Thessalonique.
3 On the following day we put in at Sidon where Julius was kind enough to allow Paul to visit his friends who took care of him.	3 Le lendemain nous arrivions sur Sidon. Julius a montré beaucoup de bienveillance vis-à-vis de Paul. Il lui a permis de visiter ses amis qui ont pu lui rendre quelques services.
4 From there we put out to sea and sailed around the sheltered side of Cyprus because of the headwinds,	4 En repartant de là, nous avons fait voile sur Chypre car nous avions le vent contre nous.
5 and crossing the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia we came to Myra in Lycia.	5 Nous avons traversé les mers de Cilicie et de Pamphylie et nous sommes arrivés à Myre en Lycie.
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship that was sailing to Italy and put us on board.	6 Là le centurion a trouvé un bateau d’Alexandrie qui partait pour l’Italie et il nous y a fait monter.
7 For many days we made little headway, arriving at Cnidus only with difficulty, and because the wind would not permit us to continue our course we sailed for the sheltered side of Crete off Salmone.	7 Durant plusieurs jours nous avons navigué très lentement, et nous avons eu du mal à arriver à Cnide; le vent ne nous a pas permis d’entrer dans le port. Puis nous avons navigué à l’abri de la Crète, passant le cap Salmoné.
8 We sailed past it with difficulty and reached a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea.	8 Nous avons eu du mal à le doubler et nous sommes arrivés à un endroit qui s’appelle Bons-Ports, près de la ville de Lasaïa.
9 Much time had now passed and sailing had become hazardous because the time of the fast had already gone by, so Paul warned them,	9 On avait pris bien du retard et la navigation devenait dangereuse: la fête du jeûne était déjà passée. Paul a insisté alors auprès d’eux,
10 "Men, I can see that this voyage will result in severe damage and heavy loss not only to the cargo and the ship, but also to our lives."	10 il leur a dit: "Mes amis, je vois que la traversée est risquée et nous allons y perdre pas mal, non seulement le chargement du navire, mais même nos vies.”
11 The centurion, however, paid more attention to the pilot and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said.	11 Mais le centurion s’est fié davantage au commandant du navire et à l’armateur qu’aux raisons de Paul;
12 Since the harbor was unfavorably situated for spending the winter, the majority planned to put out to sea from there in the hope of reaching Phoenix, a port in Crete facing west-northwest, there to spend the winter.	12 le port n’était pas indiqué pour y passer l’hiver et la plupart ont été d’avis de repartir et d’essayer d’atteindre Phénix, un port de Crète ouvert sur le sud-ouest et le nord-ouest: on y passerait l’hiver.
13 A south wind blew gently, and thinking they had attained their objective, they weighed anchor and sailed along close to the coast of Crete.	13 Un vent du sud a alors commencé à souffler, et ils ont pensé qu’ils allaient atteindre leur objectif; on a levé l’ancre et nous avons longé les côtes de Crète.
14 Before long an offshore wind of hurricane force called a "Northeaster" struck.	14 Mais peu après l’île a été balayée par un vent d’ouragan qu’on appelle le “nord-oriental”;
15 Since the ship was caught up in it and could not head into the wind we gave way and let ourselves be driven.	15 le bateau a été emporté, incapable de faire face au vent, si bien que nous sommes partis à la dérive.
16 We passed along the sheltered side of an island named Cauda and managed only with difficulty to get the dinghy under control.	16 À un moment notre course nous a fait passer sous une île appelée Cauda: alors nous avons pu, non sans peine, remonter la chaloupe.
17 They hoisted it aboard, then used cables to undergird the ship. Because of their fear that they would run aground on the shoal of Syrtis, they lowered the drift anchor and were carried along in this way.	17 Après l’avoir remontée, on a passé des câbles de secours pour ceinturer le bateau. Craignant d’échouer sur les sables de la Syrte, on a jeté à la mer une ancre flottante et on s’est laissés aller à la dérive.
18 We were being pounded by the storm so violently that the next day they jettisoned some cargo,	18 La tempête était telle que le lendemain ils ont commencé à jeter le chargement par-dessus bord.
19 and on the third day with their own hands they threw even the ship's tackle overboard.	19 Le surlendemain, c’étaient les agrès du navire qu’ils jetaient de leurs propres mains.
20 Neither the sun nor the stars were visible for many days, and no small storm raged. Finally, all hope of our surviving was taken away.	20 La tempête continuait avec la même violence, les jours passaient et ni le soleil ni les étoiles ne se montraient; nous avions perdu tout espoir de nous sauver.
21 When many would no longer eat, Paul stood among them and said, "Men, you should have taken my advice and not have set sail from Crete and you would have avoided this disastrous loss.	21 Cela faisait déjà longtemps qu’on ne mangeait plus. Alors Paul s’est adressé à tous et il a dit: "Mes amis, il fallait m’écouter et ne pas quitter la Crète, nous aurions évité ces risques et toute cette perte.
22 I urge you now to keep up your courage; not one of you will be lost, only the ship.	22 Mais maintenant je vous invite à reprendre courage: sachez que le navire va se perdre, mais nous n’aurons pas de perte de vies humaines.
23 For last night an angel of the God to whom (I) belong and whom I serve stood by me	23 Car cette nuit un ange du Dieu à qui j’appartiens et que je sers s’est tenu à côté de moi
24 and said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to stand before Caesar; and behold, for your sake, God has granted safety to all who are sailing with you.'	24 et il m’a dit: Ne crains pas, Paul, tu te présenteras au tribunal de César et Dieu t’accorde tous ceux qui voyagent avec toi.
25 Therefore, keep up your courage, men; I trust in God that it will turn out as I have been told.	25 Donc, compagnons, reprenez courage, je fais confiance à Dieu et les choses seront comme il m’a été dit.
26 We are destined to run aground on some island."	26 Il faudra bien que nous arrivions sur une île.”
27 On the fourteenth night, as we were still being driven about on the Adriatic Sea, toward midnight the sailors began to suspect that they were nearing land.	27 Ce devait être notre quatorzième nuit à la dérive sur l’Adriatique quand, en pleine nuit, les matelots ont eu l’impression qu’ils avaient une terre devant eux.
28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms; a little farther on, they again took soundings and found fifteen fathoms.	28 Ils ont jeté la sonde et ils ont trouvé vingt brasses. Un peu plus tard ils en ont trouvé quinze.
29 Fearing that we would run aground on a rocky coast, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come.	29 Comme ils avaient peur d’échouer sur un haut-fond, ils ont lancé quatre ancres de l’avant et on a attendu impatiemment le jour.
30 The sailors then tried to abandon ship; they lowered the dinghy to the sea on the pretext of going to lay out anchors from the bow.	30 Les matelots ont alors cherché à se sauver et ils ont mis la chaloupe à la mer sous prétexte de rallonger les câbles d’ancre à l’avant.
31 But Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved."	31 Mais Paul a dit au centurion et aux soldats: "Vous ne pourrez pas vous sauver si ces gens-là ne restent pas sur le bateau.”
32 So the soldiers cut the ropes of the dinghy and set it adrift.	32 Les soldats ont donc tranché les câbles de la chaloupe et l’ont laissée tomber.
33 Until the day began to dawn, Paul kept urging all to take some food. He said, "Today is the fourteenth day that you have been waiting, going hungry and eating nothing.	33 En attendant qu’il fasse jour, Paul a invité tout le monde à s’alimenter. Il a dit: "Cela fait aujourd’hui quatorze jours que nous ne prenons rien, nous ne faisons qu’attendre et nous restons à jeun.
34 I urge you, therefore, to take some food; it will help you survive. Not a hair of the head of anyone of you will be lost."	34 J’insiste pour que vous preniez de la nourriture, car il y va de votre vie: pour le reste, pas un cheveu de votre tête ne se perdra.”
35 When he said this, he took bread, gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it, and began to eat.	35 Sur ce, il a pris du pain devant tout le monde, il a rendu grâces à Dieu, il l’a partagé et il a commencé à manger.
36 They were all encouraged, and took some food themselves.	36 Les autres ont repris courage et eux aussi ont pris de la nourriture:
37 In all, there were two hundred seventy-six of us on the ship.	37 nous étions en tout sur le bateau (2)76 personnes.
38 After they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea.	38 Une fois l’estomac plein, on a jeté tout le blé à la mer pour alléger le bateau.
39 When day came they did not recognize the land, but made out a bay with a beach. They planned to run the ship ashore on it, if they could.	39 Quand il a fait jour, ils n’ont pas reconnu l’endroit, mais ils ont aperçu une baie avec une plage et ils ont décidé de faire tout pour y aborder.
40 So they cast off the anchors and abandoned them to the sea, and at the same time they unfastened the lines of the rudders, and hoisting the foresail into the wind, they made for the beach.	40 Ils ont donc détaché les ancres et les ont abandonnées à la mer; ils ont relâché les câbles du gouvernail et, avec une voile hissée à l’avant, ils ont laissé le vent les pousser vers le rivage.
41 But they struck a sandbar and ran the ship aground. The bow was wedged in and could not be moved, but the stern began to break up under the pounding (of the waves).	41 Mais on a touché un haut-fond, et le bateau s’est échoué; l’avant s’est enfoncé et n’a plus bougé pendant que l’arrière se disloquait sous la violence des vagues.
42 The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners so that none might swim away and escape,	42 À ce moment les soldats ont voulu tuer les prisonniers de peur qu’il y en ait qui s’échappent à la nage.
43 but the centurion wanted to save Paul and so kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to the shore,	43 Mais le centurion voulait sauver Paul et il les en a empêchés; il a ordonné à ceux d’entre eux qui savaient nager de se jeter les premiers et d’atteindre le rivage,
44 and then the rest, some on planks, others on debris from the ship. In this way, all reached shore safely.	44 Les autres auraient les planches et les débris du bateau. C’est ainsi que nous sommes tous arrivés à terre sains et saufs.
