1 When it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they handed Paul and some other prisoners over to a centurion named Julius of the Cohort Augusta.	1 Cuando se decidió que nos embarcásemos rumbo a Italia, fueron confiados Pablo y algunos otros prisioneros a un centurión de la cohorte Augusta, llamado Julio.
2 We went on board a ship from Adramyttium bound for ports in the province of Asia and set sail. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us.	2 Subimos a una nave de Adramitio, que iba a partir hacia las costas de Asia, y nos hicimos a la mar. Estaba con nosotros Aristarco, macedonio de Tesalónica.
3 On the following day we put in at Sidon where Julius was kind enough to allow Paul to visit his friends who took care of him.	3 Al otro día arribamos a Sidón. Julio se portó humanamente con Pablo y le permitió ir a ver a sus amigos y ser atendido por ellos.
4 From there we put out to sea and sailed around the sheltered side of Cyprus because of the headwinds,	4 Partimos de allí y navegamos al abrigo de las costas de Chipre, porque los vientos eran contrarios.
5 and crossing the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia we came to Myra in Lycia.	5 Atravesamos los mares de Cilicia y Panfilia y llegamos al cabo de quince días a Mira de Licia.
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship that was sailing to Italy and put us on board.	6 Allí encontró el centurión una nave alejandrina que navegaba a Italia, y nos hizo subir a bordo.
7 For many days we made little headway, arriving at Cnidus only with difficulty, and because the wind would not permit us to continue our course we sailed for the sheltered side of Crete off Salmone.	7 Durante muchos días la navegación fue lenta y a duras penas llegamos a la altura de Gnido. Como el viento no nos dejaba entrar en puerto, navegamos al abrigo de Creta por la parte de Salmone;
8 We sailed past it with difficulty and reached a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea.	8 y costeándola con dificultad, llegamos a un lugar llamado Puertos Buenos, cerca del cual se encuentra la ciudad de Lasea.
9 Much time had now passed and sailing had become hazardous because the time of the fast had already gone by, so Paul warned them,	9 Había transcurrido bastante tiempo y la navegación era peligrosa, pues incluso había ya pasado el Ayuno. Pablo les advertía:
10 "Men, I can see that this voyage will result in severe damage and heavy loss not only to the cargo and the ship, but also to our lives."	10 «Amigos, veo que la navegación va a traer gran peligro y grave daño no sólo para el cargamento y la nave, sino también para nuestras propias personas».
11 The centurion, however, paid more attention to the pilot and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said.	11 Pero el centurión daba más crédito al piloto y al patrón que no a las palabras de Pablo.
12 Since the harbor was unfavorably situated for spending the winter, the majority planned to put out to sea from there in the hope of reaching Phoenix, a port in Crete facing west-northwest, there to spend the winter.	12 Como el puerto no era a propósito para invernar, la mayoría decidió hacerse a la mar desde allí, por si era posible llegar a Fénica, un puerto de Creta que mira al suroeste y al noroeste, y pasar allí el invierno.
13 A south wind blew gently, and thinking they had attained their objective, they weighed anchor and sailed along close to the coast of Crete.	13 Soplaba ligeramente entonces el viento del sur y creyeron que podían poner en práctica su propósito; levaron anclas y fueron costeando Creta de cerca.
14 Before long an offshore wind of hurricane force called a "Northeaster" struck.	14 Pero no mucho después se desencadenó un viento huracanado procedente de la isla, llamado Euroaquilón.
15 Since the ship was caught up in it and could not head into the wind we gave way and let ourselves be driven.	15 La nave fue arrastrada y, no pudiendo hacer frente al viento, nos abandonamos a la deriva .
16 We passed along the sheltered side of an island named Cauda and managed only with difficulty to get the dinghy under control.	16 Navegando a sotavento de una isleta llamada Cauda, pudimos con mucha dificultad hacernos con el bote.
17 They hoisted it aboard, then used cables to undergird the ship. Because of their fear that they would run aground on the shoal of Syrtis, they lowered the drift anchor and were carried along in this way.	17 Una vez izado el bote se emplearon los cables de refuerzo, ciñendo el casco por debajo; y por miedo a chocar contra la Sirte, se echó el ancla flotante. Así se iba a la deriva.
18 We were being pounded by the storm so violently that the next day they jettisoned some cargo,	18 Y como el temporal seguía sacudiéndonos furiosamente, al día siguiente aligeraron la nave.
19 and on the third day with their own hands they threw even the ship's tackle overboard.	19 Y al tercer día con sus propias manos arrojaron al mar el aparejo de la nave.
20 Neither the sun nor the stars were visible for many days, and no small storm raged. Finally, all hope of our surviving was taken away.	20 Durante muchos días no apareció el sol ni las estrellas; teníamos sobre nosotros una tempestad no pequeña; toda esperanza de salvarnos iba desapareciendo.
21 When many would no longer eat, Paul stood among them and said, "Men, you should have taken my advice and not have set sail from Crete and you would have avoided this disastrous loss.	21 Hacía ya días que no habíamos comido; entonces Pablo se puso en medio de ellos y les dijo: «Amigos, más hubiera valido que me hubierais escuchado y no haberos hecho a la mar desde Creta; os hubierais ahorrado este peligro y esta pérdida.
22 I urge you now to keep up your courage; not one of you will be lost, only the ship.	22 Pero ahora os recomiendo que tengáis buen ánimo; ninguna de vuestras vidas se perderá; solamente la nave.
23 For last night an angel of the God to whom (I) belong and whom I serve stood by me	23 Pues esta noche se me ha presentado un ángel del Dios a quien pertenezco y a quien doy culto,
24 and said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to stand before Caesar; and behold, for your sake, God has granted safety to all who are sailing with you.'	24 y me ha dicho: “No temas, Pablo; tienes que comparecer ante el César; y mira, Dios te ha concedido la vida de todos los que navegan contigo.”
25 Therefore, keep up your courage, men; I trust in God that it will turn out as I have been told.	25 Por tanto, amigos, ¡ánimo! Yo tengo fe en Dios de que sucederá tal como se me ha dicho.
26 We are destined to run aground on some island."	26 Iremos a dar en alguna isla».
27 On the fourteenth night, as we were still being driven about on the Adriatic Sea, toward midnight the sailors began to suspect that they were nearing land.	27 Era ya la décima cuarta noche que íbamos a la deriva por el Adriático, cuando hacia la media noche presintieron los marineros la proximidad de tierra.
28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms; a little farther on, they again took soundings and found fifteen fathoms.	28 Sondearon y hallaron veinte brazas; un poco más lejos sondearon de nuevo y hallaron quince brazas.
29 Fearing that we would run aground on a rocky coast, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come.	29 Temerosos de que fuésemos a chocar contra algunos escollos, echaron cuatro anclas desde la popa y esperaban ansiosamente que se hiciese de día.
30 The sailors then tried to abandon ship; they lowered the dinghy to the sea on the pretext of going to lay out anchors from the bow.	30 Los marineros intentaban escapar de la nave, y estaban ya arriando el bote con el pretexto de echar los cables de las anclas de proa.
31 But Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved."	31 Pero Pablo dijo al centurión y a los soldados: «Si no se quedan éstos en la nave, vosotros no os podréis salvar».
32 So the soldiers cut the ropes of the dinghy and set it adrift.	32 Entonces los soldados cortaron las amarras del bote y lo dejaron caer.
33 Until the day began to dawn, Paul kept urging all to take some food. He said, "Today is the fourteenth day that you have been waiting, going hungry and eating nothing.	33 Mientras esperaban que se hiciera de día, Pablo aconsejaba a todos que tomasen alimento diciendo: «Hace ya catorce días que, en continua expectación, estáis en ayunas, sin haber comido nada.
34 I urge you, therefore, to take some food; it will help you survive. Not a hair of the head of anyone of you will be lost."	34 Por eso os aconsejo que toméis alimento, pues os conviene para vuestra propia salvación; que ninguno de vosotros perderá ni un solo cabello de su cabeza».
35 When he said this, he took bread, gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it, and began to eat.	35 Diciendo esto, tomó pan, dio gracias a Dios en presencia de todos, lo partió y se puso a comer.
36 They were all encouraged, and took some food themselves.	36 Entonces todos los demás se animaron y tomaron también alimento.
37 In all, there were two hundred seventy-six of us on the ship.	37 Estábamos en total en la nave 276 personas.
38 After they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea.	38 Una vez satisfechos, aligeraron la nave arrojando el trigo al mar.
39 When day came they did not recognize the land, but made out a bay with a beach. They planned to run the ship ashore on it, if they could.	39 Cuando vino el día, los marineros no reconocían la tierra; solamente podían divisar una ensenada con su playa; y resolvieron lanzar la nave hacia ella, si fuera posible.
40 So they cast off the anchors and abandoned them to the sea, and at the same time they unfastened the lines of the rudders, and hoisting the foresail into the wind, they made for the beach.	40 Soltaron las anclas que dejaron caer al mar; aflojaron al mismo tiempo las ataduras de los timones; depués izaron al viento la vela artimón y pusieron rumbo a la playa.
41 But they struck a sandbar and ran the ship aground. The bow was wedged in and could not be moved, but the stern began to break up under the pounding (of the waves).	41 Pero tropezaron contra un lugar con mar por ambos lados, y encallaron allí la nave; la proa clavada, quedó inmóvil; en cambio la popa, sacudida violentamente, se iba deshaciendo.
42 The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners so that none might swim away and escape,	42 Los soldados entonces resolvieron matar a los presos, no fuera que alguno se escapase a nado;
43 but the centurion wanted to save Paul and so kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to the shore,	43 pero el centurión, que quería salvar a Pablo, se opuso a su designio y dio orden de que los que supieran nadar se arrojasen los primeros al agua y ganasen la orilla;
44 and then the rest, some on planks, others on debris from the ship. In this way, all reached shore safely.	44 y los demás saliesen unos sobre tablones, otros sobre los despojos de la nave. De esta forma todos llegamos a tierra sanos y salvos.
