1 Then Moses, with the elders of Israel, gave the people this order: "Keep all these commandments which I enjoin on you today.1 Moses and the elders of Israel gave the people this command: 'Keep al the commandments which Iam laying down for you today.
2 On the day you cross the Jordan into the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you, set up some large stones and coat them with plaster.2 After you have crossed the Jordan into the country which Yahweh your God is giving you, you mustset up tal stones, coat them with lime
3 Also write on them, at the time you cross, all the words of this law, that you may thus enter into the land flowing with milk and honey, which the LORD, your God, and the God of your fathers, is giving you as he promised you.3 and on them write all the words of this Law, when you have crossed and entered the country whichYahweh your God is giving you, a country flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, God of your ancestors, haspromised you.
4 When, moreover, you have crossed the Jordan, besides setting up on Mount Ebal these stones concerning which I command you today, and coating them with plaster,4 'When you have crossed the Jordan, you must erect these stones on Mount Ebal, as I command youtoday, and coat them with lime.
5 you shall also build to the LORD, your God, an altar made of stones that no iron tool has touched.5 There, for Yahweh your God, you must build an altar of stones, on which no iron has been used.
6 You shall make this altar of the LORD, your God, with undressed stones, and shall offer on it holocausts to the LORD, your God.6 You must build the altar of Yahweh your God of rough stones, and on this altar you will present burntofferings to Yahweh your God,
7 You shall also sacrifice peace offerings and eat them there, making merry before the LORD, your God.7 and immolate communion sacrifices and eat them there, rejoicing in the presence of Yahweh yourGod.
8 On the stones you shall inscribe all the words of this law very clearly."8 On these stones you must write al the words of this Law; cut them careful y.'
9 Moses, with the levitical priests, then said to all Israel: "Be silent, O Israel, and listen! This day you have become the people of the LORD, your God.9 Moses and the levitical priests then said to al Israel: 'Be silent, Israel, and listen. Today you havebecome a people for Yahweh your God.
10 You shall therefore hearken to the voice of the LORD, your God, and keep his commandments and statutes which I enjoin on you today."10 You must listen to the voice of Yahweh your God and observe the commandments and laws which Iam laying down for you today.'
11 That same day Moses gave the people this order:11 That day Moses gave the people this order:
12 "When you cross the Jordan, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin shall stand on Mount Gerizim to pronounce blessings over the people,12 'When you have crossed the Jordan, the fol owing wil stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people:Simeon and Levi, Judah and Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin.
13 while Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali shall stand on Mount Ebal to pronounce curses.13 And the fol owing wil stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad and Asher, Zebulun, Dan andNaphtali.
14 "The Levites shall proclaim aloud to all the men of Israel:14 The Levites wil then speak, proclaiming loudly to al the Israelites:
15 'Cursed be the man who makes a carved or molten idol--an abomination to the LORD, the product of a craftsman's hands--and sets it up in secret!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'15 "Accursed be anyone who makes a carved or cast idol, a thing detestable to Yahweh, a workman'sartefact, and sets it up in secret." And the people are al to respond by saying, Amen.
16 'Cursed be he who dishonors his father or his mother!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'16 "Accursed be anyone who treats father or mother dishonourably." And the people must al say,Amen.
17 'Cursed be he who moves his neighbor's landmarks!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'17 "Accursed be anyone who displaces a neighbour's boundary mark." And the people must al say,Amen.
18 'Cursed be he who misleads a blind man on his way!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'18 "Accursed be anyone who leads the blind astray on the road." And the people must al say, Amen.
19 'Cursed be he who violates the rights of the alien, the orphan or the widow!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'19 "Accursed be anyone who violates the rights of the foreigner, the orphan and the widow." And thepeople must al say, Amen.
20 'Cursed be he who has relations with his father's wife, for he dishonors his father's bed!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'20 "Accursed be anyone who has sexual intercourse with his father's wife and withdraws the skirt of hisfather's cloak from her." And the people must all say, Amen.
21 'Cursed be he who has relations with any animal!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'21 "Accursed be anyone who has sexual intercourse with any kind of animal." And the people must allsay, Amen.
22 'Cursed be he who has relations with his sister or his half-sister!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'22 "Accursed be anyone who has sexual intercourse with his sister, the daughter of his father or of hismother." And the people must al say, Amen.
23 'Cursed be he who has relations with his mother-in-law!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'23 "Accursed be anyone who has sexual intercourse with his mother-in-law." And the people must alsay, Amen.
24 'Cursed be he who slays his neighbor in secret!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'24 "Accursed be anyone who secretly strikes down his neighbour." And the people must al say, Amen.
25 'Cursed be he who accepts payment for slaying an innocent man!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'25 "Accursed be anyone who accepts a bribe to take an innocent life." And the people must al say,Amen.
26 'Cursed be he who fails to fulfill any of the provisions of this law!' And all the people shall answer, 'Amen!'26 "Accursed be anyone who does not make the words of this Law effective by putting them intopractice." And the people must al say, Amen.'
