NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
"Love the LORD, your God, therefore, and always heed his charge: his statutes, decrees and commandments.1 Therefore love the Lord thy God and observe his precepts and ceremonies, his judgments and commandments at all times.
It is not your children, who have not known it from experience, but you yourselves who must now understand the discipline of the LORD, your God; his majesty, his strong hand and outstretched arm;2 Know this day the things that your children know not, who saw not the chastisements of the Lord your God. his great doings and strong hand, and stretched out arm,
the signs and deeds he wrought among the Egyptians, on Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and on all his land;3 The signs and works which he did in the midst of Egypt to king Pharao, and to all his land,
what he did to the Egyptian army and to their horses and chariots, engulfing them in the water of the Red Sea as they pursued you, and bringing ruin upon them even to this day;4 And to all the host of the Egyptians, and to their horses and chariots: how the waters of the Red Sea covered them, when they pursued you, and how the Lord destroyed them until this present day:
what he did for you in the desert until you arrived in this place;5 And what he hath done to you in the wilderness, till you came to this place:
and what he did to the Reubenites Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, when the ground opened its mouth and swallowed them up out of the midst of Israel, with their families and tents and every living thing that belonged to them.6 And to Dathan and Abiron the sons of Eliab, who was the son of Ruben: whom the earth, opening her mouth swallowed up with their households and tents, and all their substance, which they had in the midst of Israel.
With your own eyes you have seen all these great deeds that the LORD has done.
Keep all the commandments, then, which I enjoin on you today, that you may be strong enough to enter in and take possession of the land into which you are crossing,8 Your eyes have seen all the greet works of the Lord, that he hath done,
and that you may have long life on the land which the LORD swore to your fathers he would give to them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.9 That you may keep all his commandments, which I command you this day, and may go in, and possess the land, to which you are entering,
"For the land which you are to enter and occupy is not like the land of Egypt from which you have come, where you would sow your seed and then water it by hand, as in a vegetable garden.10 And may live in it a long time: which the Lord promised by oath to your fathers, and to their seed, a land which floweth with milk and honey.
No, the land into which you are crossing for conquest is a land of hills and valleys that drinks in rain from the heavens,11 For the land, which thou goest to possess, is not like the land of Egypt, from whence thou camest out, where, when the seed is sown, waters are brought in to water it after the manner of gardens.
a land which the LORD, your God, looks after; his eyes are upon it continually from the beginning of the year to the end.12 But it is a land of hills and plains, expecting rain from heaven.
If, then, you truly heed my commandments which I enjoin on you today, loving and serving the LORD, your God, with all your heart and all your soul,13 And the Lord thy God doth always visit it, and his eyes are on it from the beginning of the year unto the end thereof.
I will give the seasonal rain to your land, the early rain and the late rain, that you may have your grain, wine and oil to gather in;14 If then you obey my commandments, which I command you this day, that you love the Lord your God, and serve him with all your heart, and with all your soul:
and I will bring forth grass in your fields for your animals. Thus you may eat your fill.15 He will give to your land the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your corn, and your wine, and your oil,
But be careful lest your heart be so lured away that you serve other gods and worship them.16 And your hay out of the fields to feed your cattle, and that you may eat and be filled.
For then the wrath of the LORD will flare up against you and he will close up the heavens, so that no rain will fall, and the soil will not yield its crops, and you will soon perish from the good land he is giving you.17 Beware lest perhaps your heart be deceived, and you depart from the Lord, and serve strange gods, and adore them:
"Therefore, take these words of mine into your heart and soul. Bind them at your wrist as a sign, and let them be a pendant on your forehead.18 And the Lord being angry shut up heaven, that the rain come not down, nor the earth yield her fruit, and you perish quickly from the excellent land, which the Lord will give you.
Teach them to your children, speaking of them at home and abroad, whether you are busy or at rest.19 Lay up these my words in your hearts and minds, and hang them for a sign on your hands, and place them between your eyes.
And write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates,20 Teach your children that they meditate on them, when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest on the way, end when thou liest down and risest up.
so that, as long as the heavens are above the earth, you and your children may live on in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers he would give them.21 Thou shalt write them upon the posts and the doors of thy house:
"For if you are careful to observe all these commandments I enjoin on you, loving the LORD, your God, and following his ways exactly, and holding fast to him,22 That thy days may be multiplied, and the days of thy children in the land which the Lord swore to thy fathers, that he would give them as long as the heaven hangeth over the earth.
the LORD will drive all these nations out of your way, and you will dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves.23 For if you keep the commandments which I command you, and do them, to love the Lord your God, and walk in all his ways, cleaving unto him,
Every place where you set foot shall be yours: from the desert and from Lebanon, from the Euphrates River to the Western Sea, shall be your territory.24 The Lord will destroy all these nations before your face, and you shall possess them, which are greater and stronger than you.
None shall stand up against you; the LORD, your God, will spread the fear and dread of you through any land where you set foot, as he promised you.25 Every place, that your foot shall tread upon, shall be yours. From the desert, and from Libanus, from the great river Euphrates unto the western sea shall be your borders.
"I set before you here, this day, a blessing and a curse:26 None shall stand against you: the Lord your God shall lay the dread and fear of you upon all the land that you shall tread upon, as he hath spoken to you.
a blessing for obeying the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I enjoin on you today;27 Behold I set forth in your sight this day a blessing and a curse:
a curse if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD, your God, but turn aside from the way I ordain for you today, to follow other gods, whom you have not known.28 A blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day:
When the LORD, your God, brings you into the land which you are to enter and occupy, then you shall pronounce the blessing on Mount Gerizim, the curse on Mount Ebal.29 A curse, if you obey not the commandments of the Lord your. God, but revolt from the way which now I shew you, and walk after strange gods which you know not.
(Are they not beyond the Jordan, on the other side of the western road in the country of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite the Gilgal beside the terebinth of Moreh?)30 And when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land, whither thou goest to dwell, thou shalt put the blessing upon mount Garizim, the curse upon mount Hebal:
For you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and occupy the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you. When, therefore, you take possession of it and settle there,31 Which are beyond the Jordan, behind the way that goeth to the setting of the sun, in the land of the Chanaanite who dwelleth in the plain country over against Galgala, which is near the valley that reacheth and entereth far.
be careful to observe all the statutes and decrees that I set before you today.32 For you shall pass over the Jordan, to possess the land, which the Lord your God will give you, that you may have it and possess it.
