NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
He began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and left on a journey.1 Et coepit illis in parabolis loqui: “ Vineam pastinavit ho mo etcircumdedit saepem et fodit lacum et aedificavit turrim et locavit eam agricoliset peregre profectus est.
At the proper time he sent a servant to the tenants to obtain from them some of the produce of the vineyard.2 Et misit ad agricolas in tempore servum, ut abagricolis acciperet de fructu vineae;
But they seized him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.3 qui apprehensum eum caeciderunt etdimiserunt vacuum.
Again he sent them another servant. And that one they beat over the head and treated shamefully.4 Et iterum misit ad illos alium servum; et illum in capitevulneraverunt et contumeliis affecerunt.
He sent yet another whom they killed. So, too, many others; some they beat, others they killed.5 Et alium misit, et illum occiderunt,et plures alios, quosdam caedentes, alios vero occidentes.
He had one other to send, a beloved son. He sent him to them last of all, thinking, 'They will respect my son.'6 Adhuc unum habebat,filium dilectum. Misit illum ad eos novissimum dicens: “Reverebuntur filiummeum”.
But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'7 Coloni autem illi dixerunt ad invicem: “Hic est heres. Venite,occidamus eum, et nostra erit hereditas”.
So they seized him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.8 Et apprehendentes eum occideruntet eiecerunt extra vineam.
What (then) will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come, put the tenants to death, and give the vineyard to others.9 Quid ergo faciet dominus vineae? Veniet et perdetcolonos et dabit vineam aliis.
Have you not read this scripture passage: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;10 Nec Scripturam hanc legistis: “Lapidem quemreprobaverunt aedificantes,
hic factus est in caput anguli;
by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes'?"11 a Domino factum est istud
et est mirabile in oculis nostris”? ”.
They were seeking to arrest him, but they feared the crowd, for they realized that he had addressed the parable to them. So they left him and went away.12 Et quaerebant eum tenere et timuerunt turbam; cognoverunt enim quoniam ad eosparabolam hanc dixerit. Et relicto eo abierunt.
They sent some Pharisees and Herodians to him to ensnare him in his speech.13 Et mittunt ad eum quosdam ex pharisaeis et herodianis, ut eum caperent inverbo.
They came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone's opinion. You do not regard a person's status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?"14 Qui venientes dicunt ei: “ Magister, scimus quia verax es et noncuras quemquam; nec enim vides in faciem hominum, sed in veritate viam Deidoces. Licet dare tributum Caesari an non? Dabimus an non dabimus? ”.
Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius to look at."15 Quisciens versutiam eorum ait illis: “ Quid me tentatis? Afferte mihi denarium,ut videam ”.
They brought one to him and he said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?" They replied to him, "Caesar's."16 At illi attulerunt. Et ait illis: “ Cuius est imago haec etinscriptio? ”. Illi autem dixerunt ei: “ Caesaris ”.
So Jesus said to them, "Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.' They were utterly amazed at him.17 Iesus autem dixitillis: “ Quae sunt Caesaris, reddite Caesari et, quae sunt Dei, Deo ”. Etmirabantur super eo.
Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and put this question to him,18 Et veniunt ad eum sadducaei, qui dicunt resurrectionem non esse, etinterrogabant eum dicentes:
saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us, 'If someone's brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.'19 “ Magister, Moyses nobis scripsit, ut si cuiusfrater mortuus fuerit et reliquerit uxorem et filium non reliquerit, accipiatfrater eius uxorem et resuscitet semen fratri suo.
Now there were seven brothers. The first married a woman and died, leaving no descendants.20 Septem fratres erant: etprimus accepit uxorem et moriens non reliquit semen;
So the second married her and died, leaving no descendants, and the third likewise.21 et secundus accepit eamet mortuus est, non relicto semine; et tertius similiter;
And the seven left no descendants. Last of all the woman also died.22 et septem nonreliquerunt semen. Novissima omnium defuncta est et mulier.
At the resurrection (when they arise) whose wife will she be? For all seven had been married to her."23 In resurrectione,cum resurrexerint, cuius de his erit uxor? Septem enim habuerunt eam uxorem ”.
Jesus said to them, "Are you not misled because you do not know the scriptures or the power of God?24 Ait illis Iesus: “ Non ideo erratis, quia non scitis Scripturas nequevirtutem Dei?
When they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven.25 Cum enim a mortuis resurrexerint, neque nubent neque nubentur,sed sunt sicut angeli in caelis.
As for the dead being raised, have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God told him, 'I am the God of Abraham, (the) God of Isaac, and (the) God of Jacob'?26 De mortuis autem quod resurgant, nonlegistis in libro Moysis super rubum, quomodo dixerit illi Deus inquiens: “Egosum Deus Abraham et Deus Isaac et Deus Iacob”?
He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are greatly misled."27 Non est Deus mortuorum sedvivorum! Multum erratis ”.
One of the scribes, when he came forward and heard them disputing and saw how well he had answered them, asked him, "Which is the first of all the commandments?"28 Et accessit unus de scribis, qui audierat illos conquirentes, videns quoniambene illis responderit, interrogavit eum: “ Quod est primum omnium mandatum?”.
Jesus replied, "The first is this: 'Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone!29 Iesus respondit: “ Primum est: “Audi, Israel: Dominus Deus nosterDominus unus est,
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.'30 et diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo et ex totaanima tua et ex tota mente tua et ex tota virtute tua”.
The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."31 Secundum est illud:“Diliges proximum tuum tamquam teipsum”. Maius horum aliud mandatum non est”.
The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, 'He is One and there is no other than he.'32 Et ait illi scriba: “ Bene, Magister, in veritate dixisti: “Unusest, et non est alius praeter eum;
And 'to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself' is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."33 et diligere eum ex toto corde et ex totointellectu et ex tota fortitudine” et: “Diligere proximum tamquam seipsum”maius est omnibus holocautomatibus et sacrificiis ”.
And when Jesus saw that (he) answered with understanding, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And no one dared to ask him any more questions.34 Et Iesus videns quodsapienter respondisset, dixit illi: “ Non es longe a regno Dei ”. Et nemoiam audebat eum interrogare.
As Jesus was teaching in the temple area he said, "How do the scribes claim that the Messiah is the son of David?35 Et respondens Iesus dicebat docens in templo: “ Quomodo dicunt scribaeChristum filium esse David?
David himself, inspired by the holy Spirit, said: 'The Lord said to my lord, "Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet."'36 Ipse David dixit in Spiritu Sancto:
“Dixit Dominus Domino meo: Sede a dextris meis,
donec ponam inimicos tuos sub pedibus tuis”.
David himself calls him 'lord'; so how is he his son?" (The) great crowd heard this with delight.37 Ipse David dicit eum Dominum, et unde est filius eius? ”. Et multa turbaeum libenter audiebat.
In the course of his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces,38 Et dicebat in doctrina sua: “ Cavete a scribis, qui volunt in stolisambulare et salutari in foro
seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets.39 et in primis cathedris sedere in synagogis etprimos discubitus in cenis;
They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation."40 qui devorant domos viduarum et ostentant prolixasorationes. Hi accipient amplius iudicium ”.
He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums.41 Et sedens contra gazophylacium aspiciebat quomodo turba iactaret aes ingazophylacium; et multi divites iactabant multa.
A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.42 Et cum venisset una viduapauper, misit duo minuta, quod est quadrans.
Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury.43 Et convocans discipulos suos aitillis: “ Amen dico vobis: Vidua haec pauper plus omnibus misit, qui miseruntin gazophylacium:
For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood."44 Omnes enim ex eo, quod abundabat illis, miserunt; haec verode penuria sua omnia, quae habuit, misit, totum victum suum ”.
