NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
1 The oracle which Habakkuk the prophet received in vision.1 Oraculum, quod vidit Habacuc propheta.
2 How long, O LORD? I cry for help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, "Violence!" but you do not intervene.2 Usquequo, Domine, clamabo,
et non exaudis?
Vociferabor ad te: “ Violentia! ”,
et non salvas?
3 Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look at misery? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and clamorous discord.3 Quare ostendisti mihi iniquitatem
et malitiam vides?
Et vastitas et violentia est coram me,
et facta est contentio, et iurgium exoritur.
4 This is why the law is benumbed, and judgment is never rendered: Because the wicked circumvent the just; this is why judgment comes forth perverted.4 Propter hoc languet lex,
et non pervenit usque ad finem iudicium.
Quia impius praevalet adversus iustum,
propterea egreditur iudicium perversum.
5 Look over the nations and see, and be utterly amazed! For a work is being done in your days that you would not have believed, were it told.5 “ Aspicite in gentibus et videte,
admiramini et obstupescite,
quia opus facio in diebus vestris,
quod nemo credet, cum narrabitur.
6 For see, I am raising up Chaldea, that bitter and unruly people, That marches the breadth of the land to take dwellings not his own.6 Quia ecce ego suscitabo Chaldaeos,
gentem amaram et velocem,
ambulantem super latitudinem terrae,
ut possideat tabernacula non sua.
7 Terrible and dreadful is he, from himself derive his law and his majesty.7 Horribilis et terribilis est,
ex semetipsa iudicium eius
et maiestas eius egredietur.
8 Swifter than leopards are his horses, and keener than wolves at evening. His horses prance, his horsemen come from afar: They fly like the eagle hastening to devour;8 Leviores pardis equi eius
et saeviores lupis deserti;
et accurrunt equites eius:
equites namque eius de longe venient,
volabunt quasi aquila
festinans ad comedendum.
9 each comes for the rapine, Their combined onset is that of a stormwind that heaps up captives like sand.9 Omnes, ut violentiam faciant, venient,
omnes facies eorum ventus urens;
et congregabunt quasi arenam captivos.
10 He scoffs at kings, and princes are his laughingstock; He laughs at any fortress, heaps up a ramp, and conquers it.10 Et ipsa reges subsannabit,
tyrannis illudet;
ipsa super omnem munitionem ridebit
et comportabit aggerem et capiet eam.
11 Then he veers like the wind and is gone-- this culprit who makes his own strength his god!11 Tunc ultra progrediens quasi ventus pertransibit
et constituet fortitudinem suam deum suum ”.
12 Are you not from eternity, O LORD, my holy God, immortal? O LORD you have marked him for judgment, O Rock , you have readied him for punishment!12 Numquid non tu a principio, Domine,
Deus meus, sanctus meus,
qui non morieris?
Domine, ad iudicium posuisti eam; petra mea, ad corripiendum fundasti eam.
13 Too pure are your eyes to look upon evil, and the sight of misery you cannot endure. Why, then, do you gaze on the faithless in silence while the wicked man devours one more just than himself?13 Mundi sunt oculi tui, ne videas malum;
et respicere ad iniquitatem non poteris.
Quare respicis super inique agentes et taces, devorante impio iustiorem se?
14 You have made man like the fish of the sea, like creeping things without a ruler.14 Fecisti homines quasi pisces maris,
quasi reptile non habens principem super se.
15 He brings them all up with his hook, he hauls them away with his net, He gathers them in his seine; and so he rejoices and exults.15 Omnes in hamo sublevat,
trahit eos in sagena sua
et congregat in rete suo;
super hoc laetatur et exsultat.
16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his seine; For thanks to them his portion is generous, and his repast sumptuous.16 Propterea immolat sagenae suae
et sacrificat reti suo,
quia in ipsis incrassata est portio eius,
et cibus eius pinguis.
17 Shall he, then, keep on brandishing his sword to slay peoples without mercy?17 Propter hoc ergo evaginabit gladium suum semper,
ut interficiat gentes sine misericordia?
